Izuku was eating his morning breakfast on his hospital bed while Ruby sat across from him. Just as she promised yesterday, she began telling Izuku about Remnant's ancient history. He was shocked to learn that man were born from dust; and that they were strong, wise, and resourceful. But man was unfortunately born into an unforgiving world.
Ruby proceeded to provide further explanation regarding the creatures of Grimm, emphasizing their relentless focus on humanity and all of its creations. These opposing forces engaged in fierce clashes, with the darkness harboring a strong desire to eradicate mankind's fleeting existence and plunge it back into the void. However, over time, humanity's unwavering passion, resourcefulness, and ingenuity led them to discover the tools that would effectively level the playing field. This newfound power was aptly named Dust.
Equipped with a means to combat the Grimm, humanity valiantly fought their way through hordes of these malevolent creatures. In the absence of darkness, strength, civilization, and, above all, life flourished. In the present day, four kingdoms, namely Vale, Vacuo, Mistral, and Atlas, stand as the primary bastions of civilization within the realm of Remnant. These havens provide a safe refuge from the constant threat of the Grimm, in stark contrast to the hostile world that lies beyond their borders. The majority of both Humans and Faunus have chosen to reside within the protective confines of these kingdoms.
Izuku's mind processed the new information that Ruby had provided with little trouble. He nodded along at appropriate intervals to show he was listening, while taking a mouthful of juice to quell his dry throat. After Ruby had explained Remnant's history, she went on to elaborate on another thing she thought he should know.
"Aura?" Izuku asked.
"Yeah!" She beamed before clearing her throat, trying to sound as dignified as possible. "Aura is a manifestation of your own soul; a life force that runs through every living creature on Remnant, and it protects you from whatever or whoever comes your way."
"So it's basically a force field?" Izuku clarified.
"Yeah, if you put it that way," Ruby replied with a smile.
Izuku nodded as he finished up his apple.
"Okay, so what happens if your 'Aura' breaks?" Izuku inquired, raising a brow at Ruby.
"You retreat and wait for it to recharge," Ruby answered simply.
Izuku softly hummed as he absorbed the information. He harbored a blend of emotions when it came to Aura. He was aware that it was not a characteristic he possessed, as he was not born in Remnant. If he were to deny finding the concept of the soul safeguarding one's body intriguing and peculiar, he would be deceiving himself. It is traditionally expected to be the opposite, after all.
"Hmm… that sounds like something out of a video game." He mused, finishing off the rest of his juice before placing the glass aside. He leaned back against the pillows behind him and stretched his legs out in front of him. "Can anyone in this world use aura?"
Ruby rubbed her arm sheepishly. "Well, not everyone. Only those who are born to fight against the Grimm. At least that's what Uncle Qrow tells me."
Izuku arched a brow.
"Uncle Qrow?" He questioned.
"Mhm, that's his name," Ruby confirmed, nodding earnestly. "He's a teacher at Signal. I was complete garbage before he took me under his wing, but now I can fight like this, whooowaah watttchaaa!" Ruby described animatedly, complete with hand gestures.
Izuku chuckled softly at her enthusiasm. Even Nana Shimura, the seventh user of One For All, couldn't help but find Ruby adorable when springing said hand gestures. Daigoro was busy in his thoughts as he was still bewildered by the fact that the girl's Uncle was named Qrow.
"Her Uncle's name is Qrow?" Daigoro was confused. "Who names themselves after a bird?"
"Shhh." Nana hissed.
Izuku noticed the door to his room slowly creaks open behind him. When he turned around, he saw a nurse and a doctor in the doorway. The nurse approached his bedside quickly, offering a small smile. The doctor remained standing next to the nurse, seemingly just observing the situation with idle curiosity.
"Good morning, Mister Midoriya," the nurse greeted politely, giving a small bow of the head. "How are you feeling this morning?"
"Well enough, I suppose," Izuku mumbled nonchalantly. "My arms still hurt a bit, but everything else is working fine."
"That's good to hear." The nurse nodded her head.
The doctor cleared his throat. As his gaze fell to his clipboard, he adjusted his glasses several times.
"It's good to see you're making good progress with your recovery, Mr. Midoriya. When we saw how injured you were we feared the worst." He spoke, looking over the contents of his clipboard. "I believe one more day should suffice and if you're fully recovered by morning we can discharge you home tomorrow. Sound fair?"
"Sounds perfect, thank you," Izuku said with a nod. "When is my assignment?"
The nurse smiled again as she handed the doctor a chart. "Today we'll work on your physical therapy session. That will allow us to assess you well enough to make sure everything is healing okay. We start by seeing if you can stand and walk."
The doctor gestures to the room's center.
"Could you step out of bed and try standing here?" The doctor asked.
Izuku obliged, maneuvering around to the edge of his bed. He slowly planted his feet on the floor and let them rest there for a moment. He hopped out of bed and stretched for a second to get some feeling back in his legs. Once he was satisfied that his legs held his weight, Izuku started forward until he felt the support of the wall, and then stepped backward a short distance until the wall ended with a sturdy surface.
Then, Izuku made a few experimental steps. His legs trembled beneath him at first, but soon became accustomed to walking on his own two feet. Izuku grinned as he began to take slow, easy steps, moving forward. The doctor smiled softly as he walked alongside him, occasionally nodding his head approvingly at Izuku's progress.
"Good, good." The doctor praised. "Now, are you in any pain when you're walking?"
"No, sir. Everything just feels normal." Izuku assured him.
The doctor chuckled. "Good to hear. Now, how are your muscles? Anything feel stiff or uncomfortable?"
"Just sore, nothing too bad," Izuku admitted. "I can move 'em around just fine without too much trouble."
"All right, good. You might want to consider stretching out some of those muscles now." The doctor suggested. "We'll begin with light stretches. How does that sound?"
"Sure thing, doctor" Izuku agreed.
Ruby and the nurse watched as Izuku began stretching out his limbs while the doctor wrote down various exercises in his patient's file. By the end of the exercise, he felt completely revitalized—almost as though his limbs hadn't been injured. He looked to his doctor, who gave a nod in approval of his progress.
"Excellent work, Mister Midoriya. If we'll do this again tomorrow. As I have established if you're fully recovered by morning, you'll be free to go. But for now, proceed to take some rest."
Izuku nodded. With that, the doctor bid Izuku a nod and retired from the room. The nurse smiled at Izuku before following him. Once they exited the room, Izuku sat back in his bed and directed his gaze to Ruby.
"You know, I've been meaning to ask you, Ruby," Izuku remarked, leaning forward slightly towards her.
"What is it?" Ruby inquired curiously.
"What is that?" Izuku asked, pointing at the weapon on Ruby's back. "I noticed that thing situated on your side but I forgot to ask about it yesterday."
"Oh. You mean this?" Without warning, Ruby extended Crescent Rose to full size.
Izuku was shocked at the size of Ruby's weapon. The curved blade ascended to the ceiling, which was very evident in how big it was. What he couldn't marvel over was how someone of her size was able to handle it with one hand.
"WHOA! Is... that a scythe?" Izuku jumped back in fear.
"It's also a fully customizable high-impact sniper rifle."
"Wait… it's both a scythe and a gun?"
"Yup."
She smirked, cocking back the bolt for effect.
"Wow, it's incredible." Izuku complimented sincerely.
"Thanks," Ruby replied shyly. "Although, I will admit that I probably went a bit overboard when I designed her."
Izuku's eyes grew large.
"Huhh?! You designed it?" Izuku asked with incredulity.
"Yeah, all students at Signal forge their own weapons." She explained. "And it took me months to get my sweetheart out and running smoothly." She patted her scythe affectionately.
"Your sweetheart…?" Izuku repeated with a chuckle. Ruby narrowed her eyes and pointed her finger at him.
"Hey," she protested while pouting. "Don't judge me!"
Izuku raised his hands placatingly. "I wasn't judging! Honest!"
The pair proceeded their conversation until nightfall and Ruby had to leave.
The Next Day
Izuku let out a collective sigh. Following his recent discharge from the hospital, he was finally permitted to depart. Now, he found himself once again clad in his worn-out hero suit. Prior to the onset of night, when Izuku was released from the hospital, Ruby wished to seize the opportunity and acquaint Izuku with Vale.
The pancake restaurant was the initial location she presented to Izuku, as it happened to be the closest to the hospital, a mere eight blocks away. They explored Vale's shopping district and proceeded to the downtown area, visiting local museums and attractions. It proved to be quite enjoyable and exhilarating for Izuku, although it did not take long for nightfall to descend.
Ruby and Izuku walked at a leisurely pace down Vale's sidewalk. Izuku remained vigilant as he walked, diligently observing every detail within his field of vision. The natural splendor of Vale was truly a sight to behold. The city itself was divided into several sectors, each with its own distinct character. There was an upper-class district, a bustling commercial district, a thriving industrial district, a flourishing agricultural district, and a peaceful residential district.
Throughout the city, apartments gracefully lined the streets, adding to the charm of each section. Additionally, numerous shops, restaurants, coffeehouses, cafés, bars, and even bookstores were elegantly arranged along the streets, creating a delightful atmosphere reminiscent of a row of dominoes.
Both humans and Faunus could be seen gracefully navigating the busy sidewalks. The adults moved with purposeful steps, their determination evident as they went about their day. Some were on their way to attend various events, while others were returning home to savor the tranquility that awaited them. Meanwhile, trucks rumbled along the roads, diligently transporting goods to their respective destinations. Cars traversed Vale's main streets, as well as the numerous side streets that branched out from them. It was an ordinary night for everyone, filled with the harmonious rhythm of life.
Izuku was astounded by the remarkable diversity of Vale. His knowledge of the city was limited, merely extending to its name, which intriguingly seemed to complement its visual allure. As they proceeded with their leisurely walk, Izuku observed their surroundings with great curiosity. The streets were teeming with vibrant activity, each district of the city inhabited by its own distinct populace. The architectural styles of the buildings exhibited a remarkable range, yet harmoniously contributed to an overarching sense of grace and sophistication.
"It's amazing, isn't it?" Ruby remarked.
Upon hearing Ruby's words, Izuku turned his gaze towards her. "Huh?"
"Vale." She elaborated patiently, giving him a meaningful look.
"Yeah, it is. It's really beautiful." Izuku affirmed with a nod, followed by a small smile.
They proceeded further along Vale's sidewalk. The duo ventured into a previously unseen establishment, positioned on the right side of the sidewalk that both Izuku and Ruby were traversing. The shop's frontage showcased an assortment of crystals, exhibiting a remarkable diversity in terms of size, shape, and color.
Amidst these shelves, Izuku saw numerous stacks of paperbacks spanning across various genres. An elderly shopkeeper glanced at him and Ruby upon noticing them entering. A knowing smile played across the man's lips as he approached.
"Hello you two," the shopkeeper greeted. "Do you have anything in particular you want? We just got a new shipment of Dust, so I'm sure we can provide you with whatever you need."
Ruby looked around the store before shifting her sights back at the shopkeeper.
"Um, do you sell the latest gun magazines?" Ruby asked.
"Just a few shelves down and you'll see our weapons catalog. Hoping you might find something you like?" The shopkeeper replied.
Izuku noticed that the question seemed to make her a little more social as she pulled down her hood and spoke to him in a less nervous manner.
"Just checking to see what new weapons are out," she expressed, her enthusiasm noticeably heightened as the topic shifted to armaments.
"Ah, does that imply that you are a huntress?" Inquired the Shopkeeper. Ruby found the question quite amusing, as evidenced by her giggles and the subsequent blush that graced her cheeks.
"No, I am but a trainee. I'm currently on my way to Beacon," Ruby responded. The words seemed to instill a sense of confidence in her voice, as she gradually grew more at ease conversing with the shopkeeper stationed behind the counter.
"So, is there anything else you need, little lady?" The old man smiled warmly at Ruby.
"No, just needed to check some weapon magazines. That's all."
"Ok, if you have any more questions just let me know."
"Thank you." Ruby made a quick turn and went to the magazines section. Izuku trailed behind her.
The pair stopped near a selection of magazines. Izuku looked down at his belly upon hearing his stomach growling; he was hungry. He frowned and beheld his stomach.
Ruby quickly noticed this and glanced at him.
"Are you hungry?" Ruby asked.
"Yeah," Izuku replied.
Ruby smiled. "It's okay, once we leave here we'll get something to—"
"Freeze!"
Izuku and Ruby rolled their bodies around. A man wearing red sunglasses and bowler hat stood before the pair. His gun was aimed at them, more specifically at Ruby. Something that Izuku, internally, did not take too kindly.
"Hands in the air, now!" The man ordered coldly.
Ruby raised a brow at him.
"Are you robbing us?" Inquired Ruby.
"Yes!" The man replied, his patience wavering.
"Oh…" Ruby grinned.
Ruby glanced at Izuku, her eyes narrowed. Izuku glanced back at her, his eyes also narrowed. The pair redirected their gaze back at the thug.
Ruby retreated her heel back in preparation.
Green lighting crackled around Izuku's body.
A/N: And that was chapter 4 young readers! Izuku and Ruby's friendship has blossomed. With the pair together, they'll fight against Roman's goons in the next chapter. Now, one of you ask if Izuku could just heal themselves with their aura. Keep in mind that he wasn't born in Remnant; if things went differently and he was born in remnant instead of Japan, then that would be possible but he was transported here so that possibility is thrown out of the window. I have a lot of plans for Izuku through this written series, especially his interactions with characters and how much his presence will altered the events as we know them.
Before I end this note though, there's something I need to discuss with every young reader here.
If you all read chapter 3 before it was updated, you all definitely have noticed something... VERY odd at the end of the chapter. You may have seen words that said along the lines of, 'He looked at Yamato.'
Yeah... do allow me to explain.
For those who don't know, I read this well written, amazing story titled 'Heroes of the New World,' and loved it greatly. That's actually what inspired me to write 'RWMBY: Volume 1.' I had no intentions of making this story an exact copy of the author's work. But even so, the chapter you all read and I'm sure many other viewers have read would say otherwise. I was writing chapter 3 in the middle of night while reading 'Heroes of the New World,' at the same time and was very tired. Even while writing I couldn't think straight as I would normally do when I'm awake.
It also didn't help that I had no beta readers, editors to assist me with my work. Due to the fact that, in my opinion, they are hard to find. So I just left chapter 3 as it is without fully editing or making any changes. Which lead many of you and another seeing 'He looked at Yamato.' I'm not asking any of you to forgive me, and I honestly hope you don't because I don't deserve it. I was raised and taught that if I make a mistake or if have wrong someone then I should be a man, address it, and apologize. I wanna take responsibility for my actions. For robbing the author of their hard work, because I know I wouldn't like it either if anyone was copying my story and take the credit. I wouldn't even blame you guys if you stop reading this story.
Finally I will end it off with this.
I advise myself and every young reader who plans to become a writer on fanfiction themselves to write stories of their own.
Please don't copy other people's work: because by copying other author's stories, not only are you copy pasting word-per-word of their story. You're copying the blood, sweat, and tears it took for the author to get whatever chapter you're copying done and imitating it into yours.
And with that, I'll be taking my leave. See you young readers in the next chapter!
