Comedia was all curled up, fast asleep in the back of the speeder, when the ride suddenly jerked and woke her right up and right into Caleb.
"Ow! Hey, watch where you're flying." Caleb said angrily.
"She can't fly, remember?" Myra said, getting the filly off the human. "Don't listen to Mr. Grouchy, Comedia."
Comedia sighed without a word.
"Alright, everyone." Kara announced. "We're going to do a quick supply run. Now, there's a strict set of rules all of you need to follow."
Don't talk to anyone unless absolutely necessary, don't look at anyone, and don't lose sight of the group were the main rules to follow.
For this supply run, the younger kids were split into smaller groups with the older ones in order to look less suspicious. Comedia decided to go with Emeraldi. The list of supplies was simple enough. Food, water, first aid kits, blankets, and camping supplies. They had no clue how long they would be on the run, but one of their groups was heading to a public library to get a map and figure out the best routes to all the known addresses of each child.
"You really think we can all get home?" Comedia asked her big sister.
"I don't know about everyone, Comedia." Emeraldi confessed. "We can't know for sure if everyone's families are even still alive. But, you and the newer kids, I think there might be a better chance. As much as I'd like for us to stay together, I know how badly you want to get home to your dad. I've missed you so much for so long. I can definitely imagine what your father must be feeling right now. I bet he's looking for you right now."
Comedia looked down and sniffled.
"Not my dad. He's afraid of the world. And after the way I yelled at him... I don't think he even wants me anymore. I'm not even his real daughter. I might as well start barking because I'm a pet! He even uses a leash on me! He's probably looking for a replacement now."
"Comedia Mundi, don't you dare say that! He gave you that necklace you're wearing, didn't he?"
"Yes."
"What did he say to you when he gave it to you?"
Comedia looked at her necklace with teary eyes.
"He said it was a special necklace, and made me promise not to take it off so I wouldn't lose it.
"I think he had a reason for that. They say a gift of love is the most meaningful of all. Our biological father was living proof that being related isn't what makes a family, no matter what anyone says."
Comedia sniffled again, Emeraldi nuzzling her and licking her in an effort to comfort her the way a mother horse would do her foal.
Emeraldi walked Comedia into a shop where they got the supplies on the list. And... Emeraldi decided to also get an orange for her little sister to make her feel better. And it seemed to work, especially as Comedia joked with an orange slice, making and orange slice smile, which made the other kids laugh.
While loading the supplies, Comedia looked and saw something at the corner of the street.
"A telephone!" she exclaimed.
Comedia picked up a credit from the supply pouch and rushed over to the phone booth. She spit the credit into the slot and used her horn to dial a certain number. Despite not having a cell phone, Comedia realized her father having her memorize phone numbers was about to pay off.
Ki-Adi could barely sit still as he waited in the police station as Qui-Gon and the Fetts were talking to the police about the new lead they had on the kidnappers and potentially to many missing children.
"I know how difficult this is, Ki-Adi." said Depa. "Although, difficult is an understatement. But the children need us not to panic right now."
"How can you be so calm?"
"I went through an unspeakable journey of a divorce and nearly lost my son to a fate worse than death once already. But I assure you, it's not any easier if, heaven forbid, it happens a second time."
Suddenly, Ki-Adi's phone started to ring. Normally, Ki-Adi would hesitate to answer an unknown number, but right now there was the potential this was someone with news about Comedia's whereabouts. So, he answered it.
"Hello?"
"Daddy?" a familiar voice said happily on the other end.
Ki-Adi froze for a moment. Could it really be?
"Comedia?"
"Yes, Daddy! It's me."
"It's Comedia!" Ki-Adi exclaimed, getting the others' attention. "Sweetheart, are you alright?"
"Yeah, I'm alright. I'm not alone either. There were these other kids who were kidnapped like I was, and they helped me escape. We all escaped."
"Is Caleb with you?" Depa asked over the phone.
"Oh, hi, Ms. Billaba." Comedia said. "Yes. Caleb's okay too."
"Comedia, where are you?" Ki-Adi asked.
"We just got out of Mustafar Range, and now we're passing through Rodia Bay so we can get the other kids home."
"Comedia, listen. We're talking to the police now, so-"
"What?! No! Dad, you can't talk to the police!"
"Why not?"
"The Sith have someone on the inside in one of the police stations, and I don't know which one. That's how they plan future kidnappings and why they're able to escape so easily."
Ki-Adi quickly yanked Qui-Gon away before he could say anything to the cops, and whispered to him what Comedia just told him.
While Qui-Gon took care of the others, Ki-Adi went somewhere he could talk more privately to his daughter.
"Comedia, do you still have the necklace I gave you?" He asked.
"Yes, I'm still wearing it now."
"Okay, Comedia. Listen very carefully. I was hoping it wouldn't come to this, but it is critical more than ever you do not lose that necklace. There's a little tracking chip embedded in the panda bear on your necklace."
"You put a tracking chip on me?!" Comedia said angrily. "You really mistrust me that much?"
"No! Can we talk about that later? Please! Comedia, that necklace may be the only way for us to find you. You must keep it on."
"Well, what about the fact that I'm on the move?"
Ki-Adi thought and quickly told Comedia that she could get a burner phone... except for the fact that she didn't have her allowance with her when she was kidnapped.
"I think I can manage that, Daddy. Let's just say the Sith lost a little of their loot."
"Okay... I don't know how to respond to that."
"Comedia, we gotta go," said a voice Ki-Adi didn't recognize.
"Comedia, who's that?" asked the Cerea.
"That's Emeraldi... my sister."
Ki-Adi froze as he heard that. Comedia worried for a moment, and then she spoke again.
"Listen, Daddy. I'm almost out of time. I'll get a burner phone and call you again as soon as I can, I promise. Don't worry. I'm not alone, and Emeraldi is gonna take care of me until we're all home." Comedia felt a tear fall as it was nearly time to end her call. "I love you, Daddy."
Comedia put the phone down before her father could say anything else.
"Comedia?" Ki-Adi felt tears come to his eyes when he didn't get an answer.
But it wasn't just Comedia hanging up that upset him. Among the children kidnapped, Comedia had a sister? If Comedia had a sister... did that mean her real parents were out there somewhere too, looking for her? If they were out there, and they learned both their daughters escaped the Sith, they would want both of them back and it meant Ki-Adi wouldn't get to take Comedia home even if he did find her again? He'd already lost his family once, but to have to give Comedia up because her biological family was still alive... would that mean he wouldn't get to see her again?
Ten years, he raised and loved Comedia as his own. He'd been blessed with a second chance to have a family after losing his wife, seven daughters, and his unborn son at the hands of the Sith. Now he'd lost his adopted child to the Sith, and possibly to the adoption system if Comedia's parents were found now. He wanted Comedia to be happy. Maybe it was for the best, he thought. There were so many things only another horse could teach Comedia, like how to fly. He at least owed it to her to know where she really came from, and as her father, he had to think of what was best for her... even if it put him out of the picture, as much as the mere thought broke his heart.
"You said you had contact with Comedia?" Tech said, checking the location.
"Yes." Ki-Adi said simply.
"What's the matter?" Zam asked.
"I just... I just found out Comedia has a sister... and quite possibly her real parents are looking for her now."
"Ah... and you worry that you may have to give her up." She said that more as a statement than a question.
"I do want what is best for her... but I've already lost a child before. Several in fact, all at once to the heartless Sith."
Zam wasn't sure what she could say to make Ki-Adi feel better, but she did assure him that he didn't know the whole story. After all, not all children's biological families had the younger members' best interests at heart.
"I myself am an example." Zam said. "My mother left when I was only four, and my father didn't care for me at all. In fact, he abandoned me on the streets shortly after Mother left. I lived in an orphanage until I turned eighteen before I eventually met my husband. I wouldn't wish for such to happen to any other child, but that could easily be the case for both Comedia and her sister. Best case scenario, if Comedia's birth family is looking for her, I'm sure they'll be grateful that you found her, and if they do have her best interests at heart, they won't force you to give her up forever. Heck, they may even be willing to work something out so you can still be in touch with her."
Ki-Adi realized they were right. He didn't know the whole story. For all he knew, Comedia's parents were killed by the Sith too. But what would that mean for her sister? He wasn't sure what he could do at this point, but he did know one thing: the sooner he got to Rodia Bay, the better the chance he would find his daughter.
Immediately, Ki-Adi called travel services to find the quickest way to Rodia Bay. Unfortunately, nothing was available to get to Rodia Bay itself. However, there were lower priced methods to get to Ord Mantell, which was about thirty miles from there. Ki-Adi decided to take the deal and rush over to the docks with the others so they could get there by boat.
Except, Ki-Adi forgot about one thing...
He got seasick!
Two hours into the voyage, the others were working out a plan to how to proceed with rescuing the children, and uncovering who was within the police force acting as their operative. If the children were heading in the direction of Ord Mantell as they hoped, they had to follow any lead they could.
Ki-Adi was busy hurling for at least the last half hour. As a child, he'd been on a boat and got really seasick. He couldn't stop hurling every ten minutes, and even after he got off the boat, he felt nauseous for a week.
"How much longer on this boat?" Ki-Adi asked Depa.
"Captain said about fourteen hours." She answered.
Ki-Adi only barfed again in response.
With a groan he thought, "This torturous voyage better be worth it!"
Meanwhile, Comedia and her friends finished their supply run, and per Comedia's suggestion, they grabbed a couple of burner phones so they could contact Comedia's father and let him know where they were.
"So your dad put a tracking chip in that necklace you're wearing?" Caleb said.
"Yup. Apparently, so." Comedia looked unamused. "I'm not sure whether to be grateful it's there, or angry at my dad for not trusting me enough not to let myself get kidnapped."
"Uh, have you seen the situation we're all in here?"
"Not helping, Caleb!" Comedia snorted.
"Enough!" Kara said. "Come on, everyone. It'll be dark by the time we're anywhere near Ord Mantell City."
Anakin had a written down list of all the information he and Carmine could gather. With a little research online and a few 4-1-1 calls, the twins managed to find the current addresses of nearly all the children's families, and they worked out a route to travel to get each of the kids home. It looked like everyone had a home to go to... except Ahsoka and Emeraldi.
Apparently, Ahsoka's parents died in a shuttle accident five years ago. And even if Emeraldi's parents did want to take her and Comedia back, both of them were facing prison sentences for foal abuse and fraud.
"Oh no." Omega said. "But... what does that mean for you?"
"I guess it means Emeraldi and I will be on our own. I mean, we're both under eighteen, but it's pretty difficult for teenagers to get adopted even if we got into the system."
Comedia's ears drooped as she thought about that, but she had an idea.
"My dad works in foster care. He's great at his job. He'll know what to do." Comedia said, then her ears drooped again. "If I ever get back to him."
"Don't worry, Comedia. If we follow this route exactly, we'll get everyone home in no time." Kara said. "Looks like Kalifa's first. We've managed to locate her aunt and uncle to an apartment complex in Ord Mantell City. We'll take shifts town by town to make sure we all get to our parents safely. But, we also need to take other precautions to make sure the Sith won't be able to kidnap us all over again."
"You're sure our parents are even in the same places?" Boba pointed out. "Or if they're even alive?"
"Of course, I'm sure." Kara said. "By the look of things, most of the parents moved after the kidnappings to ensure the kidnappers wouldn't return once you were returned. Trust me, I have the sense none of your parents have given up looking for you, unlike local authorities."
So, the children got back into their rides and began their journey to Ord Mantell City. Traffic was surprisingly busy today, so it took about an hour for them just to get near the exit and out of Rodia Bay. And then there was the drive to the city itself. But it soon got dark and everyone started to get tired. Hence, the camping supplies.
Luckily for the children, there happened to be a camp ground a few more hours away from their first destination. But, they had to park the vehicles in separate locations to lower suspicion.
Comedia yawned as she lay down beside Emeraldi. One thing Emeraldi could definitely provide that Ki-Adi previously couldn't, was being able to wrap Comedia under a warm, feathery wing, as a mother pegasus would do. But before either of them could fall asleep, Comedia looked up at the stars.
"Wow..."
Emeraldi sighed happily. The other kids looked up at the stars too, all looking so happy as they saw how beautiful they were.
"I can't remember the last time I actually saw the sky." Ahsoka sighed.
"Hey, boys." Kara said to her brothers. "Doesn't this remind you of that time Mom and Dad took us to the midsummer picnic?"
"Good times, they were." Anakin sighed.
"I wonder if my dad can see the stars right now." Comedia said.
Emeraldi licked her sister's head and said, "I wouldn't be surprised if he were on his way to come get you now. If there's one thing you can always count on from protective parents, they'll stop at nothing to make sure their kids are safe at home at the end of the day."
But they didn't know that someone else was intent on getting to them first.
A redhead woman got off the phone after receiving a tip from her assistant.
"So, the children are headed for Ord Mantell, are they?" said the woman. She grabbed a blaster. "Then it's time they received a visit from Darlene Savage."
