Hello my readers, it's Unknown entity328 with a new chapter of A Toxic Journey! Sorry for the long wait, I lent my computer to a friend when his broke so he can finish a school project. What he didn't tell me was that he changed my account password, so I was locked out for the past couple months. It wasn't until recently I finally got him to tell me the new password and I can finally update my stories again. Lesson learned, supervise when lending my computer. Anyway, time for the chapter you've all been waiting for!

Chapter Six: The First Step Taken!

The familial battle between grandfather and grandson waged on, neither side willing to back down. While the battle itself seems evenly matched, the truth is that Ryan is on the verge of losing. Throughout their battle, Ryan had Nauxeon do nothing but dodge, unable to find an opening in Gengar's attack pattern. The shadow pokemon was moving too quickly and was floating just out of range. No matter what he thought of to close the distance, Ryan's grandfather took advantage of it to deal more damage. There were a few times Nauxeon landed a hit, but they were shallow and didn't deal much damage. The difference in skill level between the two couldn't be more obvious.

Ryan still couldn't wrap his head around what his grandfather was trying to tell him. He kept saying that the young gym leader was making excuses, holding himself back. However, that wasn't true in the slightest. He made the decision to stay in Hemlock Town to continue being its gym leader. He wanted to take care of the gym and his grandfather, and he can fulfill his dream of being a poison pokemon master in town. So he doesn't really have a reason to go on a journey anymore, right?

'So why?' Ryan gritted his teeth when he saw Nauxeon barely dodge a powerful thunder punch. He clenched his fists tightly as he ordered Nauxeon to use iron tail. 'Why do I feel unsatisfied with my decision?'

'He's nearing his breaking point.' Ryan's grandfather thought, having caught his grandson clenching his fists. Meanwhile, Gengar easily caught the glowing tail and began to swing the toxic point pokemon around. 'He better make up his mind soon, or else I'll have no choice but to take this more seriously.'

Meanwhile, Ash and his friends stood to the side and watched the battle which was clearly one-sided. Misty held onto Togepi as she watched on with worry when Nauxeon was slammed into the ground. Brock crossed his arms, a frown on his face when he saw the hesitance in Ryan's body language. Lastly, Ash and Pikachu had the urge to go and stop this battle. He moved to do just that, but was held back when Brock placed a hand on his shoulder. The two locked eyes and Brock simply shook his head. Lowering his head, Ash returned his eyes to the battle to see two shadow ball attacks collide and explode.

When the dust settled, it revealed Nauxeon breathing heavily while Gengar didn't look tired at all. Ryan and his grandfather were looking each other in the eye, one filled with determination while the other showed no emotion. It was clear to those watching that neither side was willing to back down. However, the problem is that Ryan's focus wasn't entirely on the battle. His mind kept wandering to what his grandfather said to him about his mindset keeping him from gaining experience.

Try as he might, the young gym leader just doesn't understand what his predecessor is trying to tell him. If he's lacking experience, all he had to do was train and battle challengers that came to the gym. There were plenty of trainers passing by to challenge the gym with different battle styles. Could he possibly be missing something that goes beyond training and battling challengers? If so, what could it be that he's missing that's keeping him from experiencing being a true trainer?

Nauxeon ran circles around Gengar while using double team to once again try to confuse the shadow pokemon. Gengar simply grinned and fired a night shade straight towards the ground. The debris covered Nauxeon and his copies, causing the poison point pokemon to stop running. Small pebbles flew through the air and dispersed the copies until only the real Nauxeon remained. Gengar then launched a shadow ball, hitting Nauxeon in the abdomen, sending him flying past Ryan and into a tree.

"Nauxeon!" Ryan quickly looked behind him to see his partner struggling to get back up.

"This battle isn't looking good for Ryan." Misty said, concern evident in her voice as Ryan knelt down when Nauxeon approached him.

"The gap between them is just too large." Brock commented, seeing the concern in Ryan's eyes when Nauxeon limped past him. "If it keeps going like this, Ryan will lose."

"Come on, Ryan." Ash muttered, having caught the lost look in the young gym leader's eyes.

'Grandpa's never battled like this before.' Ryan bit his lower lip in worry as he watched Nauxeon stubbornly continuing the battle. The poison eeveelution charged straight towards Gengar, who simply spun out of the way into a roundhouse kick. 'What do I do?'

"Times up." Ryan's grandfather muttered, lowering his head and closing his eyes in disappointment. He then raised his head and opened his eyes. "Gengar, full power Thunder Punch!"

Ryan gasped when he heard that and looked up as the shadow pokemon reeled back a fist. The fist began to spark before being completely engulfed in electricity. Gengar dove towards Nauxeon who glared back up and growled. Ryan opened his mouth to tell Nauxeon to dodge, but the words wouldn't come out. No, it wasn't that they wouldn't come out, it's that they can't. His throat felt tight, almost like something was constricting around it. He could do nothing but watch as Gengar came closer towards Nauxeon. He tried desperately to make his words come out, but remained frozen where he stood.

His eyes slowly widened when Gengar was now in front of Nauxeon, bringing its sparking fist up in an uppercut. The fist connected with Nauxeon's jaw, causing his body to be engulfed in electricity. Nauxeon was then knocked off his feet and into the air while Gengar struck again with a roundhouse backhand. Nauxeon skidded along the ground, stopping before Ryan's feet as sparks danced along his body. Ryan looked down in worry as Nauxeon struggled to get back up again. However, Nauxeon fell limp with swirls in his eyes and cried out weakly.

"Nauxeon." Ryan said softly, falling to his knees and reaching his shaking arms for his partner. He gently cradled Nauxeon in his arms and held him close to himself. "I'm sorry."

"Do you understand now, Ryan?" The young gym leader looked up to see his grandfather standing in front of him. He knelt down and placed a hand on top of Ryan's head. "While you can get better as you train, that has its limits." The elderly man looked past Ryan to Ash and his friends. "Only by battling new people and experiencing the world can you truly grow as a trainer."

"But I can battle new people at the gym." Ryan protested weakly, still shaken up at the overwhelming battle and his first ever loss "And I don't need to experience the world to become a better trainer."

"Stop being stubborn." Ryan's grandfather scolded, removing his hand from his grandson's head and tapping him in the forehead with his fan. "I want you to answer me honestly, Ryan." Ryan rubbed his forehead as he looked up at his grandfather curiously. "You feel like you've hit a wall in your training, don't you?"

Ryan's eyes widened in shock before looking down at his partner who was now curled on his lap. It's true, the young gym leader knew his progression in his training had stagnated deep down. He realized it when he was training Grimer, how they always made the same mistake over and over again. No matter what he did, his pokemon all seemed to improve less and less the more they trained. In fact, he was already at a loss of how to train Nauxeon, his long-time partner. He realized it, but didn't want to admit it, because he'd feel like he'd fail as a gym leader if he did.

Knowing that he doesn't have the will to say it aloud, the young gym leader simply nodded his head and lowered it. At the current moment, Ryan just wanted to lock himself in his room and forget today ever happened. His mind is a jumbled mess, unable to take in or process anything that was happening. He didn't even realize that tears of frustration started to build up in his eyes and gliding down his face. He doesn't even know what he wants to do or think anymore. He wants to stay in town, but he also wants to travel. He wants to see the world, but also to take care of the only family he's ever known. He knows he can't have it both ways, but it was extremely difficult for him to choose one over the other.

"Just let it all out, Ryan." Ryan's grandfather said softly, pulling his grandson in a hug and gently patting his back. "Let it all out and tell me what you truly want to do."

"Grandpa." Ryan couldn't hold it in anymore and returned the hug, desperately clutching the fabric of his grandfather's kimono. He didn't know when he started, but Ryan tears started to flow freely as he bawled. "I-I want to see the world! I want to try new things, meet new people, learn everything!" His grip tightened as he buried his face in his grandfather's shoulder to hide his tears. "But I also don't want to lose you either, grandpa!"

"You foolish boy." Ryan's grandfather smiled softly at his grandson's admittance, giving him a comforting squeeze. "You should know it's impossible to keep me down." He then looked up at the sky. "Go, experience everything the world has to offer, I'll be here waiting."

Ryan pulled away from his grandfather, his eyes red and puffy from how hard he was crying. "But, the gym…"

"Will be in good hands." Ryan, Ash, Misty, and Brock looked behind them to see the mayor approaching them. He stopped before Ryan and his grandfather before kneeling down. "Your grandfather and I talked things over, and I'll fill in as gym leader until you come back."

"Are you sure?" Ryan asked, a look of uncertainty as Nauxeon opened his eyes and looked around in confusion. "You're already busy being mayor."

The mayor simply laughed at Ryan's concern and patted the young gym leader on the head. "I'm sure, it's no trouble at all."

"I don't know." Ryan said hesitantly, still unsure what to do. He felt something tugging on his sleeve and looked down to see Nauxeon. "Nauxeon?"

"Looks like Nauxeon wants you to go as well." Ryan's grandfather said in amusement, petting the toxic point pokemon on the head. "After all, he knows you better than any of us."

"Yeah." Ryan smiled at his partner, gently removing his sleeve from his mouth and getting to his feet. "Alright, I decided." Nauxeon nodded and Ryan returned it before his smile turned into a grin. "I'm giving up on giving up my journey!" Everyone smiled at Ryan's declaration as he then turned towards Ash and pointed at the raven haired trainer. "With that said, Ash, I want you to be my last challenger before I leave!"

"You're on, Ryan!" Ash said, holding up a fist while Pikachu's cheeks sparked with electricity.

"It'll be a battle to remember." Brock said, smiling as he crossed his arms and nodding in approval.

"You can say that again." Misty nodded in agreement, wiping away a tear after watching the heartwarming scene earlier.

After paying a visit to the pokemon center, Ash and Ryan soon found themselves back at the gym's battlefield. In the bleachers were Misty, Brock, Ryan's grandfather, the mayor, Gloria, Keith, and Nathan. Ash and Ryan stood on opposing sides of the battlefield as they awaited Tony's signal. The two had excited smirks on their faces with Pikachu Nauxeon standing beside their respective trainers.

"The Hemlock town gym battle rematch between Ash the challenger and Ryan the gym leader will now begin!" Tony declared, acting as the referee once again as he was holding a green flag in his right hand and a red flag in his left. "You will each have the use of three pokemon and the battle will be over when all three of either side's pokemon are unable to continue." He looked at both trainers to make sure they were listening. "In addition, only the challenger is allowed to substitute pokemon at any time."

"Let's make this a battle we'll never forget, Ash!" Ryan called out as he pulled out a pokeball and tossed it. "Come out, Grimer!"

The pokeball popped open and released the sludge pokemon who raised its arms and stood high. "Grimer!"

"Count on it, Ryan!" Ash nodded as he too pulled out a pokeball and tossed it. "Noctowl, I choose you!"

The pokeball popped open and released the owl pokemon with a sparkle. Noctowl and Grimer each glared at each other as they awaited the battle to begin.

"The challenger calls the first attack." Tony said, looking at both trainers and pokemon before raising both flags. "Battle begin!"

"Noctowl, Tackle!" Ash called out before the owl pokemon charged towards the sludge pokemon.

"Relax, Grimer!" Ryan smirked, watching as the sludge pokemon relaxed its body. The moment Noctowl made contact, Grimer hardly looked like it took damage. Ash's eyes widened in shock as the sludge pokemon grabbed Noctowl and held on tightly.

"Nicely done." Ryan's grandfather nodded in approval at what he just witnessed as Noctowl struggled to break free. "By relaxing its body, Grimer was able to reduce the force of the blow and restrict Noctowl at the same time."

"That Grimer of his is full of surprises." Misty said, a surprised and impressed look on her face.

"Poison Gas!" Ryan grinned as Grimer opened its mouth and released a thick dark green gas that covered the two pokemon.

"Noctowl!" Ash called out, a look of worry on his face.

Noctowl flew out of the gas with a cry, circling around the battle before hovering in front of Ash. The owl pokemon had a purple hue on its face, indicating it was poisoned. The gas cleared to reveal Grimer with its arms crossed. The sludge pokemon looked over its shoulder to Ryan and smiled happily.

"I'm not making the same mistake twice, Ash." Ryan said, resting a hand on his hip and lowering his head with his eyes closed. "And I'm sure I'll make plenty of mistakes during my journey." He then gave his grandfather a brief glance. "But I'll learn from them and the people I meet." He smiled when he saw his grandfather nodding his head before focusing back on Ash. "When I do, I'll be one step closer to my dream!"

"That's the spirit, Ryan!" Ash said, adjusting his hat as Noctowl awaited the raven haired trainer's next order. "I'm sure you'll be a lot stronger than you are now when we meet again!"

"That's what I'm hoping for." Ryan nodded, sharing a look with Grimer before pointing forward. "Grimer, use Sludge Bomb!"

The sludge pokemon uncrossed its arms and took a deep breath before opening its mouth wide. However, Grimer never got the chance to attack when the skylight suddenly shattered. Ryan and Ash looked up in shock as two clear spheres descended down. The spheres closed around Pikachu and Nauxeon before retracting back to the roof.

"What's going on?!" Ryan exclaimed, arms raised to shield his face from the glass shards raining down. Laughter was his answer as Team Rocket appeared in their balloon. "Not you losers again."

"Who are you calling losers?!" Jessie shouted furiously.

"I say the losers are you." James said as the spheres with Pikachu and Nauxeon floated next to him.

"Boo hoo hoo." Meowth taunted.

"If you think you're getting away, think again!" Ryan gritted his teeth and clenching his fists before looking towards Nauxeon. "Nauxeon, use Iron Tail!"

"Nauxeon." The toxic point pokemon nodded before his tail began to glow. Nauxeon swung his tail at the sphere, only for it to remain intact. "Naux?!"

"But how?" Ryan's eyes widened in disbelief that there wasn't even a scratch.

"Did you really think we'd let you break them so easily?" Meowth asked rhetorically.

"We took the liberty to make those glass cages to be 100% shatter proof and Electricity proof." James said smugly as Pikachu and Nauxeon tried to free themselves.

"So I'm afraid no prison break and no jolts for you." Jessie said before giving them the rasberry.

"Why you little." Ryans clenched his fists that were shaking with rage before pulling out a pokeball and tossing it. "Ariados, Spider Web!"

The long leg pokemon appeared with a sparkle before firing a long thread past Team Rocket. The thread then split and formed a web attaching to the roof of the gym. The long leg pokemon then scurried along the web up towards the balloon. Ariados went up the balloon and used its mandibles to chew on it. The balloon popped and began to quickly lose air as the long leg pokemon climbed down its web.

"Not again!" Team Rocket exclaimed as their balloon descended towards the battlefield. Ariados released more thread to catch the spheres as the balloon crashed.

Ariados dangled on a thread over Ryan who had his hands in the air and dropped the spheres. Ryan caught the spheres, removing the thread around them before looking up at the long leg pokemon. "Thanks for your help, Ariados."

"Aria." Ariados nodded before landing beside Ryan.

"Alright, your turn, Grimer." Ryan knelt down to the sludge pokemon and set the spheres before it.

"Grimer." The sludge pokemon nodded before sticking its hands against the locks.

"What's Grimer doing?" Misty asked, applying an antidote to Noctowl.

"Watch and see." Ryan's grandfather said as he watched the sludge pokemon's arms wriggled slightly before hearing a couple clicks. The spheres opened and Pikachu and Nauxeon ran over to their respective trainers. 'I never knew a Grimer could do that.'

"Now I'm mad." Jessie said, crawling out of the wrecked balloon with James and Meowth. She pulled out a pokeball and prepared to throw it. "Time to teach these twerps a lesson!"

"I'm with you there, Jessie." James agreed, also pulling out a couple pokeballs.

"You guys have a lot of nerve." Ryan narrowed his eyes as his pokemon stood in front of him. "Not only did you break into my gym and try to steal our pokemon, you interrupted an important battle." He held up a fist and held it out as his pokemon cried out in agreement. "You guys are gonna pay for that!"

"Do you honestly think you scare us?" Jessie taunted as she threw her pokeball. "Arbok!"

"Weezing, Victreebel!" James called out as he threw his pokeballs.

As the three pokemon were released, everyone present sweatdropped when Victreebel immediately attacked James. Jessie simply closed her eyes and had one hand on her hip while the fingers of her other hand was on her temple. Meowth rubbed the back of his head while Weezing looked worryingly.

"If it's a battle you want, then it's a battle you'll get." Ryan said, looking down at his pokemon who all looked back at him. "Nauxeon, Grimer, Ariados, let's show them what we've got!" The three poison pokemon nodded in agreement. "There's no way we'll lose to these guys!"

"We'll see about that!" Jessie shouted, pointing forward. "Arbok, Wrap attack!"

"Weezing, tackle, Vine Whip Victreebel!" James called out once he was free.

"Ariados, Spider Web!" Ryan called out as all three opposing pokemon charged forward. Ariados released some thread that split into a large web, trapping all three pokemon. "Grimer, Sludge Bomb! Nauxeon, Shadow Ball barrage!"

Grimer fired numerous globs of exploding sludge while Nauxeon creates small spheres of black energy and released them. The attacks bombarded the restrained pokemon before Aridos tossed them into the air. Jessie, James, and Meowth moved frantically when they realized their pokemon were falling towards them. The wrapped up pokemon slammed into them, creating a small groaning pile.

"Time to finish this." Ryan said, watching as his pokemon formed a triangle around Team Rocket. "Nauxeon, full power Shadow Ball! Grimer, Sludge Bomb! Ariados, Psybeam!"

"We'll help!" Ash said, Pikachu climbing up his back before jumping high into the air. "Pikachu, use Thunderbolt!"

Nauxeon opened his mouth and formed a larger version of the spheres of dark energy. Grimer opened its mouth wide and took a deep breath. Ariados' horn began to glow with rainbow energy. Pikachu clenched his paws as his cheeks sparked with electricity. The four pokemon released their respective attacks at the same time. Team Rocket panicked upon seeing the oncoming attacks but couldn't move. The four attacks collided, resulting in an enormous explosion, sending Team Rocket flying into the air.

"No, how did this happen?!" Jessie cried out in frustration that they failed yet again to steal any pokemon.

"I'll tell you how, it's because of that new twerp's Ariados!" Jame shouted.

"Doesn't matter how it happened!" Meowth yelled, somehow getting himself stuck in the web along with the other pokemon. "It doesn't change the fact…"

"We're blasting off again!" Team Rocket finished as they flew into the sky and out of sight, becoming a twinkle.

Once the smoke cleared, everyone could see the state the battlefield was now in. There were glass shards everywhere as well as large pieces of rubble. What was most noticeable was the large crater in the center of the battlefield. It was at least five feet deep and ten yards in diameter. The roof of the battlefield suffered even more damage from the explosion, completely erasing the frame of the skylight.

"The gym." Ryan muttered, looking around at the devastation around him. He then sheepishly rubbed the back of his head with a nervous chuckle. "I guess we overdid it a bit."

"That's an understatement." Brock said, also looking around at the damage. "There's no way you can continue the battle now."

"Yeah, the battlefield is in no condition for any battles." Misty nodded in agreement, lightly brushing off small pieces of rubble on Togepi's head.

Ryan now sat on the bleachers, watching the construction workers and their pokemon work on cleaning the battlefield. From what he was told, it would take at least a month to completely repair everything. This greatly disappointed Ryan, because it meant he couldn't finish his gym battle with Ash. He was really looking forward to feeling the rush he felt when he first battled the raven haired trainer.

'Actually, this might be a good time to do some remodeling on top of the renovations.' Ryan thought, his eyes focused on the crater in the center of the battlefield. 'Maybe we can turn that crater into a pool for water pokemon.'

"That crater would make a nice pool, right?" Ryan jumped when his grandfather suddenly sat next to him. He kept his eyes on the battlefield as he stuffed his hands into his sleeves. "It's a shame you couldn't finish your battle."

"Yeah, especially since it just started." Ryan nodded, pulling out three pokeballs and stared at them. "That battle was the one I wanted to win the most."

"You'll have another chance." Ryan's grandfather said reassuringly, rummaging through his sleeve before pulling out a pokegear. He held it out to Ryan, who looked at it curiously. "Here, a gift for starting your journey."

"Really, thanks." Ryan took the pokegear gratefully and stared at it in awe. He then noticed a charm attached to it with a curious stone on the end. "What's this, grandpa?"

"Something passed down in our family." Ryan's grandfather reached into his other sleeve and pulled out his fan, which had the same stone attached to the tassels. "Think of it like a good luck charm."

Ryan continued to stare at the stone in fascination at how it sparkles in the light. What really captured his attention was the spiral pattern inside of it. He's never seen a stone like it before, and he'll admit he was curious about it.

"Have fun on your journey, Ryan." Ryan's grandfather brought the young gym leader out of his thoughts. He saw that his grandfather kept a stoic expression, but could see the worry in his eyes. "Stay safe and learn everything you can from everything and everyone around you."

"I will." Ryan nodded, wrapping his arms around his grandfather in a hug. "I'll miss you, grandpa."

"I'll miss you too, Ryan." Ryan's grandfather returned the hug. When they pulled away, he looked at his grandson curiously. "That reminds me, do you know where your first stop will be?"

"Actually, I'm thinking of going with Ash and his friends." Ryan admitted, surprising his grandfather as he was sure the young gym leader wanted to travel alone. "They traveled longer than me, so I might learn a thing or two from them."

"I see." Ryan's grandfather hummed thoughtfully before looking at his grandson. "Have you asked them yet?"

"Not yet." Ryan shook his head, pocketing his pokeballs and new pokegear before standing up. "I'm gonna ask after I get my stuff." He then noticed his backpack was suddenly on his grandfather's lap. "Grandpa."

"I had a feeling you would say that, so I saved you a trip." Ryan's grandfather got to his feet and turned to face Ryan. He held out the backpack to Ryan and gave him a small encouraging smile. "Be sure not to cause them trouble, and learn everything you can from Ash."

"Thanks, grandpa." Ryan took the backpack and slung it over his shoulders. He looked at his grandfather with a look of worry. "Are you sure you'll be okay?"

"Give me some credit." The elderly man laughed, thumping a fist in his chest. "Don't forget, I was the gym leader until recently."

Ryan chuckled at the confidence his grandfather was exuding. "You got a point there."

And so, after finalizing what needed to be repaired and any remodeling ideas, the construction workers left to get the materials needed. Ryan then asked Ash and his friends if he could travel with them. They all agreed, saying that the more the merrier. The gym staff were both happy and sad that Ryan was leaving. However, their happiness outweighed their sadness as they knew Ryan would be back stronger than before. They all each prepared a parting gift for their young gym leader and wished him luck on his travels. Gloria gave him a camera to take pictures and a scrapbook to store them so he can remember everything he's experienced. Nathan's gift was a pair of red framed goggles for if he ever ended up caught in a snow or sandstorm. Keith's was an entire duffle bag worth of pokeballs for when he wants to catch new pokemon, Ryan had a hard time fitting them all in his backpack. Finally, Tony's gift was the most surprising, a pokemon egg that was yellow with black stripes.

"Well, It's time to get going." Ryan said, standing outside the gym as he adjusted his new goggles on his head. He looked over to Tony, Keith, Nathan, and Gloria who came to see him off. He walked over to his grandfather and pulled him in for one last hug, being careful of the incubator that held the egg."Take care of yourself, alright?"

"I will." Ryan's grandfather gave a small smile and hugged him back. "And promise me you'll come back as a great trainer."

"I will." Ryan broke the hug and walked towards Ash and his friends. They then walked in the direction of the town exit. Ryan, Ash and his friends all waved goodbye to his grandfather and gym staff as they waved back until they were out of sight.

"He truly is your son." Ryan's grandfather muttered under his breath, lowering his head with his eyes closed and a small smile on his face. "Perhaps your paths will cross one day."

"So, where are we going guys?" Ryan asked, fiddling with his new pokegear to get familiar with it.

"We're on our way to Olivine city." Brock replied.

"Olivine city?" Ryan looked at Brock in surprise before there was an excited gleam in his eyes. "Awesome, I always wanted to go there!"

"Well, now's your chance." Misty laughed at the young gym leader's excitement.

Ryan pocketed his pokegear, looking over his shoulder to have one last look at the one place he's ever known. The moment it was out of sight, he won't be seeing Hemlock town for a while. The town was colored beautifully by the orange-red rays of the setting sun. Memories of his childhood flashed before his eyes one after another. Most of them were times he spent with his grandfather, watching his gym battles. These memories reminded him of his dream to be a poison pokemon master and making the Hemlock gym the best gym in all of Johto. Pulling out his new camera, Ryan took a picture of the beautiful sight, wanting it to be the first in his scrapbook. With his determination renewed, Ryan faced forward, continued to stride alongside his new friends into the unknown.
