4. Chapter 4. Blythe's team and the Thornberrys meet.
Blythe, along with her dad and the supervisor, took a stroll by the river. "Do you see that, Blythe? The water's reflection, the stones shimmering in the sunlight... it's magnificent!" says Mr. Baxter, smiling as he adjusts his camera.
"It's beautiful, dad! I'll never forget this adventure," laughs Blythe.
And so they continue with casual talks. "And that's why capturing these moments is so special. So, when you look at these photos years later, you'll remember the beauty of this place and how much fun we had," adds Mr. Baxter, putting his arm around Blythe's shoulders.
"Thank you, dad! It's truly an experience I've earned, and I appreciate you bringing me here," Blythe responds.
"I've captured some fantastic images," the supervisor comments, showing off his camera.
"Oh, thank you! I can't wait to see them," Blythe says excitedly.
Meanwhile, Eliza tells Darwin how incredible it is that Blythe can also speak to animals.
"It's truly astonishing how Blythe can communicate with them in the same way I do. Don't you think, Darwin?" says Eliza.
"It's fascinating, indeed. But what concerns me is how she acquired that ability. It reminds me of the experience with the magical staff given to you by the shaman disguised as a boar. The gift is a blessing, but it can also be lost if its possessor reveals it," Darwin reflects.
"I get what you mean. That's why I won't ask her if she can talk to animals. If she has the same rule as me, it would be terrible if she lost such a precious gift," Eliza replies.
Darwin furrows his brow, "There's also the matter of Blythe's pets. If they were to find out about your ability and tell Blythe, she might confront you about it. That confrontation could lead to you revealing your secret inadvertently."
Eliza's eyes widen with realization, "You're right, Darwin. I hadn't thought about that. We need to be careful around her pets. I have to tell the other animals here that they mustn't talk to Blythe about my ability."
"Exactly, Eliza. It's a secret that must be kept," Darwin says, nodding.
"I hope Blythe understands the importance of it and cherishes her ability. It's such a rare and special gift," Eliza adds.
"I trust she will. For now, let's enjoy this beautiful day," concludes Darwin.
Later, when Blythe returns to camp with her pets, the pets and the young designer greet each other.
Upon hearing about the pets' feelings towards Eliza that day, Zoe, the singing dog, approaches Blythe and says, "Hey Blythe, you should invite Eliza for a stroll around here. She seems very friendly, and it would be a chance for you to get to know her better."
Russell, the reading hedgehog, nodded, "I agree. It would be nice to hang out with someone your age here."
Blythe smiled, "You're right, guys. And it seems her family is quite adventurous. Let's see where she is."
Approaching where she had encountered Eliza earlier, Blythe spots the Thornberry's truck. Nigel and Marianne, Eliza's parents, were busy arranging their gear.
"Hello!" Blythe calls, walking up to them.
Nigel looked up and smiled, "Hello, young lady! How are you?"
Marianne added, "Oh, hello. I remember spotting you from afar in this jungle while filming. What brings you here?"
Blythe scratched the back of her neck nervously, "My name is Blythe and I'm here because I won a contest at my school. I was looking for Eliza. Are you her parents?"
Marianne smiled proudly, "Yes, we are! Our daughter Eliza is quite the little adventurer. Would you like to speak to her?"
Blythe nodded, "I'd love to invite her to my camp. I think we could explore the place together."
Nigel laughed, "Of course! Just make sure she doesn't get into any trouble."
At that moment, Eliza emerged from the truck. "Hi, Blythe! How's it going?"
Blythe grinned, "Hi Eliza. Would you like to come to my campsite?"
Eliza lit up, "Yes, of course! It's always great to meet someone else who's also having jungle adventures."
As the girls chatted, Darwin stepped out, waving.
Eliza leaned toward him and asked, "What's up, Darwin? Do you want to join us?". Darwin nodded vigorously.
Blythe looked at the chimpanzee curiously, "Is that your chimp?"
Eliza laughed, "Yes! Darwin is part of our family. We adopted him."
Blythe was amazed, "That's truly incredible. You have a very special family."
Eliza smiled, "Thank you! I'm excited for this new adventure."
After Blythe and Eliza wrapped up their brief conversation about Darwin, a commotion sounded from the truck. It was Donnie, who was fiddling with some tool, making his typical fast and incoherent noises. Debbie, with headphones around her neck, emerged from the truck, trying to retrieve the tool from Donnie's hands.
"Donnie! Give me that! It's not a toy," said Debbie, clearly exasperated.
Eliza laughed, "Oh, Blythe, let me introduce you to my siblings. This is Debbie, my older sister, and the wild boy is Donnie". Turning to her siblings she said, "Guys, this is Blythe."
Debbie offered a tired smile to Blythe, "Hi, nice to meet you. Sorry for the show. This boy is a handful."
Blythe smiled, "Don't worry. We all have our quirks. It's great to meet you."
Donnie, after making a playful noise, stopped and looked at Blythe, tilting his head. He made a series of fast gestures and sounds, which Blythe couldn't understand.
Eliza translated, "He's saying hello and that he likes your shoes."
Blythe laughed, "Thanks, Donnie! They're my favorites. It's great to meet you both. You truly have a fascinating family.
Debbie rolled her eyes but smiled, "Yeah, there's never a dull moment here. Especially when your sister is super adventurous, and your brother was raised by orangutans."
Blythe replied, "So you adopted Donnie after finding him in the wild? That's very noble of you."
Eliza said, "That's right, and we're thrilled to meet you too, Blythe. We can include you in our adventures around here."
Later, Eliza walked away with Blythe and they started to chat. "It's really humid here, isn't it? But I guess that's to be expected in a tropical jungle," Eliza mentioned. Blythe nodded, "Yes, it's quite different from what I'm used to, but nature is impressive."
As they approached the campsite, a sturdy figure and a thinner one approached. Blythe smiled upon seeing them and said, "Ah, here are my dad and the supervisor."
"Hello, young lady! I'm Blythe's dad. You must be Eliza, the famous adventure girl. I've heard about your travels," Mr. Baxter said with a warm smile.
Eliza, surprised but grateful for the welcome, responded, "Hello, it's a pleasure to meet you. Yes, we travel a lot. I'm excited to explore this place!"
Supervisor Erick, with a curious look, added, "It's an honor to have a jungle expert with us. I'm Supervisor Erick, who accompanies Blythe, her dad, and her pets. How do you find our little camp area?"
Eliza looked around before answering, "Everything looks great. And yes, the jungle always has something new to offer."
Blythe, with a proud tone, began to explain, "We're here because I won a contest at school. We're really excited to be in the jungle."
"That sounds exciting. What kind of contest was it?" Eliza asked with genuine interest.
"Well, at my school, there was a competition about fraternity exhibitions and animal aid. I presented an exhibition about the pets I've cared for at a pet store where I work and their unique stories. It's a great honor to win and be here," Blythe replied, clearly excited to share her story.
Eliza, always fascinated by animal tales, asked, "Wow, that sounds amazing! So, those pets I saw with you belong to that pet store where you work?"
"Yes, exactly. I thought it would be a good idea to bring them here so they could have a little adventure too. They love exploring new places as much as I do," Blythe stated, clearly proud of her animal companions.
"That's really sweet. I'd love to hear more about them and their stories. Every animal has its own unique story!" exclaimed Eliza enthusiastically.
Meanwhile, in the Thornberrys' truck, Debbie keenly observed the outside view. "Dad, mom, we forgot to tell you, Eliza told me Blythe brought seven pets here, right in the wild," she commented, "What do you think about adding that part to our documentary? It could be interesting to see how they adapt in a different environment."
Nigel, scratching his chin, enthusiastically replied, "Wow! That sounds like a brilliant idea, Debbie. Good catch."
Marianne, always ready to capture a good moment, said: "Yes, it could offer a different and exciting perspective. I'll go get the camera." Both parents left, leaving Debbie with a feeling of satisfaction for her idea.
On the other hand, at the campsite, Darwin peeked out and saw the pets. He looked at them with curiosity and thought it would be a good time to socialize. Approaching them, he said, "Hello, guys. How are you? I'm Darwin, the Thornberrys' chimp."
Zoe, the dog, replied with a smile on her face, "Hello, Darwin. We've noticed. It's a pleasure to meet you."
Russell, the hedgehog, nodded and said, "Definitely, it's an honor to meet the famous Thornberrys' chimp."
After all the pets introduced themselves, Pepper, the skunk, tried to lighten the mood with a joke: "Why did the skunk sit in the corner at the party? He didn't want to raise a stink!" The pets let out soft laughter and Darwin laughed openly.
As the pets chatted with Darwin, the chimp noticed they kept a curious glance towards Eliza. Before they could ask, Vinnie, the gecko, quickly inquired, "Darwin, tell us more about Eliza. She seems so young and yet so passionate about adventure."
Darwin, a bit taken aback by the question, answered, "Yes, Eliza has always loved nature. In fact, sometimes I think she enjoys the jungle and the animals more than I do. She's a special girl."
Minka, the spider monkey, chuckled softly and said, "That's easy to see. We're intrigued about how someone so young can be so bold and adventurous."
Darwin smiled and remarked, "Well, when you grow up traveling the world and getting to know different cultures and ecosystems, it's easy to fall in love with adventure. Eliza has had many amazing experiences on her journeys."
The pets nodded, clearly impressed. "It's great to meet such interesting people and animals," Penny Ling, the panda bear, said, "it makes this adventure even more special."
When Eliza's parents arrived, Nigel extended a hand and said enthusiastically, "Good afternoon! I've heard a lot about this camp and the adventures you've had here." Marianne nodded with a smile, "It's a pleasure to meet you all."
Blythe's dad, extending his hand, replied, "Likewise, I'm Roger Baxter, and this is our supervisor, Erick."
The supervisor, with a polite smile, added, "A pleasure. Your work is quite impressive."
Nigel, always enthusiastic, questioned Blythe, "So, dear, we've heard that you brought seven very special pets to the camp. Would you honor us by letting us film them for our documentary?"
Blythe smiled and said, "Of course, it would be a pleasure. And for me, it's a unique opportunity to have them in a documentary."
With light laughter, Marianne added, "Thank you so much, Blythe."
Blythe, with sparkling eyes, replied, "That sounds great! Thank you."
Afterward, Blythe heads to the tent and brings out her pets. Noticing that Nigel is ready to film, the pets start striking funny and charming poses.
Nigel, in awe, remarks, "This is fantastic! I've never had the chance to film such well-behaved pets before."
Blythe, proudly, says, "Yes, it takes some training, but they are very intelligent."
Eliza, observing the scene and thinking to herself, muses, It makes sense. If Blythe can communicate with them, training them must be much easier.
Once Nigel finishes filming, a noise in the nearby branches draws everyone's attention. It's Donnie, nimbly moving from branch to branch.
Sunil, with a mix of wonder and curiosity, asks Darwin, "Who is that?"
Darwin, in a friendly tone, replies, "That's Donnie. We adopted him after finding him in Borneo."
Russell, with admiration, says, "That's very noble of you."
Darwin smiles and says, "Thank you, he's an important part of our family."
Soon after, Debbie arrives on the scene accompanying Donnie. Approaching, she says with her typical teenage attitude, "Hey, everyone! I see Donnie's already putting on his usual show."
Everyone chuckles lightly and greets her warmly.
As the pets return to the camp tent, there seems to be some unease among them. Discreetly, they signal Darwin, who, curious, approaches to see what's happening.
Russell, with a serious look, begins, "Darwin, when we met Eliza, we all felt something... different, as if there's something special about her. Do you know anything about it?"
Darwin, heart pounding, thinks, Oh no, I can't reveal Eliza's secret! After a brief pause, he clears his throat and responds, "Well, perhaps what you're feeling is because of the time Eliza saved several animals from a poacher. She has a brave spirit and is always ready to help."
Russell, pondering this, remarks, "Interesting. That would certainly explain the connection we felt."
However, feeling the need to divert the topic, Darwin asks, "And how about you? How do you achieve that incredible connection with Blythe? You always seem perfectly in sync with her."
Zoe, with a look showing the depth of their bond, replies, "Blythe has a special bond with each of us. Over time, we've developed a relationship based on trust and understanding."
In Darwin's mind, a sigh of relief: That was close! I hope that's enough to deflect any curiosity about Eliza's secret gift. Then, nodding, he says, "I understand. It's evident there's a lot of affection between you."
Meanwhile, an excited Nigel suggests to Blythe, her dad, and the supervisor, "How about we all take a jungle walk together tomorrow? We could explore the animals and plants here."
Blythe, eyes shining with excitement, responds, "That's an excellent idea! I've always wanted to be part of a documentary. Dad, can I?"
Blythe's dad smiles and answers, "Of course, sweetheart. It will be a wonderful experience."
Eliza, hopping with excitement, remarks, "It's going to be amazing!"
Nigel nods, "Alright then. We'll come prepared to film the documentary at noon tomorrow."
As night falls, before leaving, the Thornberrys say their goodbyes, "See you tomorrow! Get ready for a great adventure," says Nigel with a smile on his face.
Blythe, entering her camp tent, meets her pets and announces, "Guys, tomorrow we're going on a jungle walk and will be part of a documentary!"
Penny Ling, eyes shining, exclaims, "That sounds amazing and spectacular!"
Vinnie, hopping with excitement, adds, "I can't wait for more adventures!"
Later on, Blythe and Eliza will participate in a jungle activity together. Will they both manage to keep their secrets of talking to animals hidden?
