Chapter 54: Medicine
The day I'm released from the hospital, Tobias laughs on the drive home, shaking his head while telling me the story of how I acted after surgery on the pain medication. While Tobias is speaking, I can't bear to look him in the eye. I thought I was thinking those things. My mouth-to-brain filter was gone.
Tobias bristles while speaking about how Stacy approached him in the waiting room. At home, he hands me the envelope of the photos Stacy gave him. I glance at the photographs, looking for the so-called evidence against Sam and the drugs that were slipped into my drink. I roll my eyes at each picture. Sam did not drug me. I refuse to believe that. We have known each other for years. He is one of my best friends. Tobias stares at me, his eyes meeting mine over the photo. He grasps my hand, asking, "Can you please stay away from Sam?" I begin to argue, but Tobias states, "At least for a while since I have a training mission with the new recruits in the field for the next few weeks." I plead, "Sam would never drug me!" Tobias's blue eyes meet mine. I can see the hurt that I'm choosing Sam over him, and I cave into his demand. I nod my head reluctantly. Later that evening, in bed, I whisper about the hazy memories I can recall from the night in question.
The next morning, I push Tobias out the door to meet his recruits for a field training exercise. Tobias will feel more useful with his recruits instead of hovering over me for the next few weeks. My eyes follow the truck's tail lights down the road. I need to confront Sam, to find out what happened that night at the bar. How can I be friends with someone Tobias doesn't trust or like?
Internally, I roll my eyes at the thought; even if Tobias doesn't like Sam, I don't care. I like Sam, and I trust him! There has to be another reason behind his actions? Is Tobias jealous of Sam?
I dial the phone, calling Christina. She answers immediately. Pulling at my jeans, I ask, "Hey, do you wanna go to lunch?" Her joyous voice fills my speaker, "Of course! Can Will tag along?" My heart sinks in my chest at her request. My mind bounces with different scenarios. Will he go directly to Tobias to inform him of what I'm up to? Especially since he and Tobias seem to be best buddies now. I force a smile onto my lips, replying, "Yes!" Trying to force happiness into my voice.
Leaving the house, I'm barely on the sidewalk when Will's cheerful voice finds my ears, "Tris!" He pulls me into a hug. A musical voice behind him complains, "Okay, William! It's my turn!" Will lets me go, and Christina immediately attacks me, knocking us both over.
We walk to a diner on base. Chris peppers me with questions, "How was your weekend trip to New York City? I want to hear all about it!" Quickly, I launch into the details of Tobias's and my trip. Chris glances dreamily at Will, "I wish you would plan something like that for me. Why can't you be romantic like that?"
Will glances at her from the corner of his eyes, smirking, "We used to live in New York City, you know. You have been to that city plenty of times. Hell, you still work there! Why would you want to spend a weekend there with me?" Chris rolls her eyes, reasoning, "Because William, I would get to spend the entire weekend with you, alone, without your work interrupting every second." A smile tugs at Chris's lips while her eyes meet his. She turns to me, sighing, "Silly boy, he doesn't understand, does he?"
A giggle escapes my lips, not wanting to get into the middle of their disagreement or take sides. I ask, "Have you decided on a wedding date yet?" Attempting to get Chris off the subject of the city. Chris grins, "You will be the first to know when that is decided!" Her fingers point at Will, continuing, "Besides Will, here." Her eyes light up when Will smiles, "Well, that is reassuring."
I internally battle with myself, and decide against my better judgment to ask, "I need your help with something, if you are available." I stop and wait. They both stare at me with a million questions in their eyes. I continue, "I could really use your help." Will glances at Chris, declaring, "Sure, shoot."
My eyes bounce between Chris and Will while my mind wanders. Chris glances at Will like she isn't sure what I'm about to ask. Taking a deep breath, I launch into the story, explaining to both of them what Tobias shared with me about Stacy's version of what happened at the bar. Finishing the story, aloud, I ask, "You both have known Sam for as long as I have. Do you really think he would drug me?"
Christina laughs loudly, drawing eyes to our table at the diner, "Sam would never do that; he's been in love with you since high school!" My heart picks up pace at that resolution, while Chris continues, "I think Stacy is bad news. She's trying to put a wedge between Four and you by making Sam the enemy. Stacy clearly wants Four back." Will stares at me like he's calculating something. He asks carefully, "Do you remember anything from that night, Tris?"
I shrug my shoulders, answering, "Not really. I mean, I recall sitting at the back of the bar and sitting at a table with Stacy. She was drunk out of her mind. I have shared that much with Tobias, but I feel like he still doesn't believe me." Both Chris and Will ask at the same time, "Why?" Their eyes are wide at my previous statement.
Once again, I shrug my shoulders, picking at the straw wrapper, muttering, "Because I feel like Tobias is on a mission to pin everything on Sam. I don't understand why. I don't know if Tobias truly believes Sam would drug me or if he only believes that because Stacy put the idea into his head. I need your help." Will smirks, "Here's a crazy idea, why don't you try speaking with Sam?" He glances over his shoulder, toward the door. My eyes fall onto Sam's blue HellCat idling at the red stop light on the corner. I whisper, "I would, but I can't get a hold of him. He must be ignoring my calls. I need something to take my mind off everything until I can talk to him."
Will offers, "I need to go to Texas on Army business next week. If you are free, you can come with me, and you can go sightseeing or something. We will be gone for two days at most. What do you say?" Will stares at me, waiting for an answer. I smile, "Sure." My mind quickly drifting to leaving Virginia for a few glorious days.
Tobias calls that evening. He sounds exhausted from being out in the field all day. I inform him of the plan to go with Will to Texas for a few days next week Tobias's voice drops, asking, "Will you be at the airport to meet me, Mrs. Eaton?"
A giggle escapes my lips at his words, "You better believe it, Major Eaton, I wouldn't miss it for the world." Tobias groans, "You are going to pay for that comment when I get home. I'm going to tickle you to death!"
A smile tugs at my lips: "Promises, promises!" My laughter causes him to laugh. "I miss you. I love you. I hope you have a good night." Hanging up the phone, I whisper, "I love you, Tobias. Please come home and be careful." Tobias murmurs, "That's the plan."
