21- Reunions

Hello again. I´m back with a new chapter. One would think that these crazy times would at least be beneficial for writers. No such luck here. I´m still struggling with the story and life gets stranger than fiction. Anyway, here you have it, a little longer than usual to keep the plot moving forward.

Chapter 21- Reunions

"I´m sorry mom, won't be able to see you this weekend." Kagome´s sighed highlighted the sincerity in her tone.

"Oh, that´s too bad dear. Please don´t tell me you´re working. You don´t need to exert yourself, grandpa is doing better these days and I could..."

"No mama," Kagome interrupted before her mother got carried away unnecessarily, "I won´t be working, mom. I´ve been invited to a birthday party."

"Really? Anyone I know?"

"It´s my boss´s niece. We became good friends and she invited me."

"Did she now?" Kagome recognized the sudden change in her mother´s tone, gone was the concern for her wellbeing and in came the gossipy neighbor. "Or did your boss asked you to go with him as his date?"

Kagome took a long breath before answering. She didn´t like laying to her mother, she would just tell her enough of the truth until they could have this conversation face to face.

"Well, he is attending too, and many other board members as well. It´s a social event with many important guests. I think Rin-chan invited me to have a friend among so many business associates."

"Well, you know the girl better than I do." Mrs. Higurashi couldn´t keep the smile from her voice, mother always knows best after all.

"Miss Sakasagami is here to see you," Kagura announced after entering Onigumo´s office and closing the door behind her. "Should I let her in? I mean, she doesn´t have an appointment."

The old man shrugged his shoulders before answering.

"It´s ok, I have nothing to tell her but she may have something to report."

Kagura led the other female youkai in the office and let her alone with her boss, her curiosity making her turn her head in the direction of the door.

"Is Onigumo busy?" Kanna´s voice almost startled her had she been a regular human.

"Hmm, yeah. Yura Sakasagami just came in a moment ago. Do you have something for him?"

"It´s doctor Renkotsu, he says he needs to fill Onigumo in on the last development."

"Oh, ok then. I´ll try to get him through as soon as Yura leaves."

Kagura watched the younger youkai leave before turning to the intercom, she had already left the other end open when she led Yura in, knowing Onigumo had his office protected by a barrier and she couldn´t have used her superior hearing to her advantage.

"This is not spying. I just need to know what´s going on, for my job..." She told herself as she turned her side of the device on.

"I don´t understand, you are letting him get away from us. I thought you wanted one of us to seduce Inuyasha, you even used your daughter to try and get him. Why did you let that Higurashi girl get close to him?"

"Well, none of you could actually seduce him, Kikyo was the only one that came close to it and she couldn´t seal the deal. I´m tired of waiting for you, Tsubaki or Abi to do it. I decided to try a new approach, let him choose a female and then set our plans in motion."

"Then you have nothing for us? And what about Kikyo? Is she out of the plan too?"

"Oh, I have plans for Kikyo, don´t you worry about her. As for you three, I still want you to stay alert. We need to keep an eye on Inuyasha and that Higurashi girl. Any news, any action different from their routine, I want to know it."

"You got it. I´ll do anything you want, on one condition." Kagura held her breath during Yura´s pause and wondered what could the demoness want. "I want Inuyasha. After everything is over and you have what you want, I get Inuyasha."

"That´s a deal. When it´s all over you can have the hanyo, or whatever is left of him."

"Are you planning to kill him?"

"No, dear kami." Onigumo´s creepy laughter gave Kagura a chill over the intercom. "But he´ll wish he were dead I´m sure."

He saw her blushing from the other side of the table, Miroku´s incessant babbling could be heard above the soft chimes of their phones.

Kami knew she had tried to distract herself, read the reports and listen to Miroku´s rant.

The Takahashi manor looked very different this time around, it seemed to have come to life with so many people wandering the gardens and halls. Rin ran to greet them as soon as she spotted them through the door.

She had grabbed her hand and was leading her to her bedroom, the gift box tucked safely under her other arm.

"Your room is so big and beautiful Rin-chan!" Her eyes scanned the white walls and white furniture with pastel pink cushions on the chairs, curtains, and comforter. There was a big white desk on the corner, a laptop with pink sakura´s screen lock on top of it and the bed covered in packages of all sizes and colors.

As she promised; Rin sat on the bed and started tearing the gift paper to get to the Kagome´s present. It was a rectangular object, no bigger than the laptop screen.

"Kagome-chan, it´s so beautiful, thank you so much!" Rina was already on her feet, hugging the older woman tight with one hand and carefully hanging to the present on the other one. "Is this how you see me? I know I don´t look that good."

"Oh Rin-chan, you are too modest. Of course, you look beautiful. I wish I had more time to make a decent portrait, I could only manage a pencil sketch. I promise I´ll do an oil painting as soon as I have the time."

"Will you? Oh dear, this is the best present anyone could give me. Come on, let´s show it to father."

"Don´t you want to open the other presents before you decide?" Kagome smiled pleased, she didn´t expect Rin to be so excited over her gift.

"You´re right, help me open them all please."

Inuyasha grabbed a champagne flute from one of the waiters when Kagome and Rin ran up the stairs. He didn´t get to sip more than one drink one his body stiffened under the presence of his older brother.

"Welcome home otouto, I wasn´t sure you would be kind enough to grace us with your presence."

"You know I´d do anything for Rin, aniki."

"And where´s Miss Higurashi? I can still smell her scent all over you."

Inuyasha inhaled trying to remain calm. He couldn´t let his brother get to him.

"Rin took her to her bedroom. She wanted her help to open the presents."

"You brought her as your date, I assume. Does that mean you are getting serious with that woman?"

The bastard was making it more difficult to be polite to him. The hanyo took another sip of his champagne to try and cool down his rising temper.

"That is none of your business, Sesshomaru. I think I made myself crystal clear last time you tried to discuss the matter."

"And I seem to remember telling you that any matter affecting the company is my business."

"My relationship with Kagome has nothing to do with the company."

"Are you sure?" The daiyokai raised an eyebrow in question. "She was a mere telemarketer a couple of months ago and she is now working in one of our top projects. Her salary and her insurance have been upgraded several times what it used to be. Do you think I wouldn´t notice any of these sudden changes?"

"Come on! She´s having great results as a part of Miroku´s team. And her salary can´t be compared to any of the executives. She works hard to earn it too!"

"Ok, let´s say she´s doing a good job. Have you considered she isn´t taking you as seriously as you are taking her?" Sesshomaru took one step closer to his brother, his height imposing over the hanyo´s. "Tell me little brother, have you met her family yet?"

A low blow.

His brother knew his past well and used it in his favor. He knew there had been some women in his life that had been more than happy to share his bed, only Kikyo had been brave enough to have an open, committed relationship with a lowly hanyo.

"As a matter of fact, I have."

It wasn´t a lie. Inuyasha had met Kagome´s mother and grandfather once.

"Dad, look at the gift Kagome-chan made for me!"

Rin´s melodic voice interrupted before Sesshomaru could keep on questioning him. Inuyasha was grateful for the respite, he knew his brother was like a dog with a bone when he wanted something.

"Isn´t it beautiful?" Rin gushed proudly showing off her portrait."Kagome made me look so, so..."

"Ethereal." Sesshomaru surprised them all when he supplied the words Rin was lacking. "Sublime." He added.

"Yes, dad. That was exactly what I wanted to say. I´m going to ask Myoga-jii-chan to clear a table in the lobby so that everyone can see it when they walk through the door."

"Thank you, Miss Higurashi, my daughter is very pleased with her present."

Inuyasha was speechless, he hadn´t expected his brother to be so civil towards Kagome when he was pretty much accusing her of being a gold digger not ten minutes ago.

"I must admit it took me by surprise, you are a very talented young woman."

Kagome was blushing profusely, not being used to being the center of attention.

"There´s no need to thank me, I´m glad Rin-chan liked what I did for her."

"How is it that such a talented artist ended up working for our company if you don´t mind my asking?"

"And there he goes again." Inuyasha moved his arm around Kagome´s shoulders in a protective way.

"My grandfather always told me there is no shame in an honest job." She answered. "I just needed to have a steady income to help my family."

"Kagome, let´s go say hello to the other guests, there are many people I want you to meet. Inuyasha just stirred her away after she gently bowed to Sesshomaru.

He grabbed two new flutes of champagne and offered one to Kagome then he led her to the first friendly face he recognized in the crowd.

"Totosai old man, I thought you were dead already. Still hanging out with the pussy cats!"

"You disrespectful brat!" The elderly demon was smiling fondly at the hanyo. "And who is this lovely lady?"

"This here is Kagome Higurashi. Kagome, meet Totosai Kajiya and Toran Devas, two of my father´s oldest friends.

"A pleasure to meet you, dear. Rin-chan was showing us the lovely portrait you painted for her."

Kagome was back to blushing now.

"Please, tell us Inuyasha. Where did you find this gem?" Toran felt the need to add to the conversation.

"Kagome has been working for SNT for a few months. You will be seeing a lot of her in the future."

"Miss Higurashi is working on Dr. Ikeda´s project." Sesshomaru had followed them, apparently. "Toran and Totosai are members of the board too. Inuyasha, let me borrow your date for a moment."

Just as Inuyasha was going to protest, Kagome spoke up.

"I´ll go with you, Takahashi -san."

"Perfect, I want to introduce you to part of the legal team that will be working with you in the next step of the project."

They were already walking away before Inuyasha could protest. It made him uneasy to leave Kagome alone with Sesshomaru, he´d just have to trust his brother would be all business at the moment. It was his usual mindset on "social events" like this.

"Miss Higurashi, allow me to introduce you to the lawyers Ginta Suijin, Hakaku Tsukumo." Kagome was already bowing her head respectfully and couldn´t see much around her. "And this gentleman here is the head of the legal team, Koga Tatsukawa."

The whole room started spinning at the mention of that name. She hadn´t heard it in years, it could be just a namesake. But all her fears became real when she made eye contact with the lawyer.

"There´s no need for formalities." The wolf youkai said with a wide smile directed at Sesshomaru. "Miss Higurashi and I have known each other since college." Now he turned to face her directly. "How have you been Kagome?"
