24- Betrayal

24- Betrayal

An exasperated growl reverberated through the room as Inuyasha paced his brother´s office. Sesshomaru´s relaxed pose did nothing to appease the turbulent mood he was now in.

"You don´t know her as I do. Kagome would never betray me."

Tired of his younger brother's angry replying to his questions, Sesshomaru finally stood up from behind his desk, his greater stature trying to impose over Inuyasha´s restlessness.

"Do you then?" He spoke softly turning around his desk to stand next to where his brother had stopped his frantic pacing. "You know her family then. Have you been properly introduced?"

"As a matter of fact, I have." Sesshomaru didn´t need to know the minutiae of his meeting Kagome´s family.

"And you believe they are trustworthy?"

Inuyasha took a moment to relive his meeting Mrs. Higurashi and the old man at the hospital and playing GTA with Souta, the night he had spent in their family´s company. The warmth of their home, their acceptance of him, and the evident love palpable in the air.

"Without question"

"Very well." Sesshomaru seemed satisfied with his answer. "Still, we must protect father´s legacy. It is our duty." Having effectively soothed Inuyasha´s temper, the older demon returned to his seat. "If you insist on pursuing a relationship with this girl, I will need you to sign this document. It will help us guard the company against anyone trying to take it from us."

Inuyasha just huffed. He had never coveted his father´s legacy, as Sesshomaru called it. Not because he didn´t respect his father, it was just because he had all he needed, he had earned his place as head of IT through hard work and determination. True, he had a comfortable life and his last name had opened many doors for him. That much he had to thank his family for.

"Fine." Inuyasha just signed the documents. "If this will get you off my back."

"Kouga-kun, did you just take a picture of me...naked?" The young girl kept frozen in place, her only reaction was to cover her breast with her arms.

"Relax baby. I want to have something to remember you this week since you´re going to stay with your family for the holidays." His wolfish grin never left his face as he approached her, his hand putting his phone away in his jeans back pockets to prevent her from reaching out for it. He grabbed her hands and kissed her knuckles sweetly. "You know I get too lonely when you leave, I have no family, no one to spend these holidays with me."

Kagome smiled, softening her attitude. "I told you, you can always come home with me. My family wouldn´t mind having you there."

"I already told you, baby, I will go meet your family once I have enough money to put a ring on this precious, delicate, pretty, little finger." He emphasized each adjective with a kiss to her finger, dissolving all of Kagome's fears with every one of them.

"Fine." She smiled as he lifted his head and their eyes met, "But you promise to delete it when I´m back on campus, will you?"

"I swear." He raised his right hand in a dignified posture.

Kagome´s doubts had never shown its ugly head again, until this day.

"What do you want?" She wasted no time with niceties.

"You finally deigned to call Kags."

The gravelly voice greeting her was making her skin crawl.

"You don´t get to call me that anymore, Kouga." Her knuckles were whitening as the grip on her phone was almost painful. "And you are blackmailing me to call you. Let´s cut the crap, what do you want from me?"

"Not over the phone. Meet me tomorrow after work at the visitor's parking lot."

"Ok." She ended the call after that, breathing heavily while her strength left her body a collapsed pile on the floor.

The following day Inuyasha did not show up for work again. Kagome couldn´t help to feel a little relieved, she didn´t have to make up an excuse to meet with Kouga that evening. Kagome didn´t believe for a second that Inuyasha would let her alone with Kouga, least of all if he knew about the picture. She was a little worried too if she was being honest, keeping secrets from Inuyasha was becoming increasingly difficult as they became closer. Every time she decided there was something she didn´t dare share with him, she immediately changed her mind just by being next to him. She had come to rely on him that much.

And she missed Inuyasha a lot, she hadn´t seen him in three days now. She would have time to worry about that later. Today, she had to deal with Kouga.

She stayed a little later than the legal team, Shippo and Miroku, getting a head start on the week´s reports to try and clear her head. She was already alone when she got Kouga´s text telling her he was waiting for her.

With an acute sense of dread, she took the elevator to the ground floor and walked to the back of the building where the visitor´s parking lot was located. She didn´t have to look for him for long, Kouga was standing alone in the darkness of the garage, only a few feet away from the street. She snickered despite herself, the dark spot where he was standing had been carefully chosen, it was hidden from the street view by the pillars supporting the structure. Apart from that, there were no cameras in that area.

"I´m here, speak up." She spat out as soon as she was in front of him.

"First of all, I´d like to apologize. I never wanted to end up like this between you and me. Believe me, Kags, if there was another way, I wouldn´t be bothering you."

Kagome interrupted his speech with a loud exhale of air. She didn´t believe him, of course. For all his nice words, he had kept a private picture of her and was using it for leverage.

"The thing is Kags, I need the cyphertext to decode Dr. Ikeda´s project. Don´t ask me why I need it, I just do. And Inuyasha is the creator and the only one with access to it. I want you to get it from him."

His words took a minute to sink in before Kagome finally understood.

"So, you want me to become a spy and betray the company?" Anger was rising inside her, she had to take a deep breath to quench it. "What makes you believe he would give me anything?"

Kouga gave a little annoying laugh and tapped his nose.

"You may think you are hiding your affair with the mutt, but his stench is all over you, and yours is on him too. You are practically announcing it to every youkai in the world Kagome. He will give you anything, you just have to ask. Or take it from him, I don´t really care how you get it."

The anger she was valiantly trying to suppress made it back with a vengeance. Kagome lunched her fists forward against the ookami´s chest, pounding frantically against the hard muscles.

"Stop it, woman. You´re going to hurt yourself." Kouga grabbed her wrists in an iron grip. "You do that and I´ll delete the pic."

"Just like you promised to delete it years ago?"

"I give you my word Kag."

"Don´t ever call me Kag again, you bastard." She turned around and left him looking at her retreating back.

"When can I expect your delivery?"

"I didn´t say I was doing it." She shouted without turning around

"Then, should I send this to your boss? And I mean the CEO of the company, Inuyasha´s brother, you remember him?"

Kagome froze in her spot, not daring to look the wolf youkai in the eye.

"Give me a few days. I´ll get in touch with you. Don´t call me." The weak defeated tone in her voice becoming too difficult to hide.

And she left the garage trembling in anger, what was she going to do now?

The wolf youkai watched her as she turned around the building before pulling his cell phone from the chest pocket of his jacket.

"The hook is already baited; all you have to do now is wait." His voice sounded gloomy echoing off the walls of the almost empty garage.

"And you are sure she´s gonna take it?"

"If she´s smart, she will." Koga paused for a moment not wanting to dwell on Kagome´s misfortune for too long. He had meant what he had told her before, he wished there was another way. Unfortunately, he was brought into this plan because of his connection to her. This was the only way out for him. "Now is your turn, Bankotsu. You have to fulfill your part of the deal."

"All in due time, my friend, once you get us the cyphertext."

The darkness of his apartment suited Inuyasha´s mood. He hadn´t wanted to give in to Sesshomaru´s demands at the beginning, he hadn´t had an ulterior motive, he just refused to roll over so easily at his command. Besides, being the night of the new moon, he always felt more comfortable alone and locked up until the sun rose again. Ever since he was a kid, losing his finer senses and becoming so vulnerable scared him senseless. He had avoided Kagome because of it too. After Kykio had decided he liked this side of him better, he had grown fearful anyone who knew him would prefer it too.

He didn´t feel like explaining it to Kagome. And it was only a night, he would see her the next morning, he could go one more night without her, he kept telling himself while he kept ignoring the insistent ringing of his phone.

The sound of her phone startled Kagome, she took it out of her bag and answered promptly.

"Kagome-chan, I need your help!"

"Rin-chan, are you ok?" She became instantly worried about the younger girl.

"I´m fine, don´t worry. It´s just that I need your help. Remember Shotaru-kun, the cute shy guy I told you about?" Rin paused waiting for Kagome to hum her answer. "Well, he finally texted me and asked me out. What shall I do?"

"Rin-chan! You can´t accept, remember I was saving you for my brother. I still have hope that you´ll become my little sister!"

Soft giggles could be heard from the other end of the line. "I´m becoming your niece once you marry Yash, you don´t need me to be your little sister."

Kagome gave a sad sigh and dismissed the thought of a wedding. She needed to focus on Rin right now, daydreaming about a wedding that may never happen wouldn´t get her anywhere.

Kagome cleared her throat before picking up where she thought was best. " I don´t know Rin-chan, asking someone out over text sounds weird to me. You should talk to him face to face."

"That sounds too scary, I´m not sure I can pull that off."

"If you think the guy is worth it, you should at least try Rin."

They talked a little more about dating and boys before they said goodnight. Kagome was almost at the train station when she checked her phone again, expecting to find one or more missed phone calls from Inuyasha. Strangely enough, there were none. She hesitated for a moment and decided to call her boyfriend. When she got no answers from her calls or texts, she felt it was time to worry about him. It was the first time since they started dating, they hadn´t spent 2 nights in a row separated, and then no communicating with each other was extremely rare. She stopped for a moment to check her navigation app and decided it was early enough to change directions.

Once inside his building, she stood outside his front door and rang the bell several times, her phone glued to her ear as she kept calling him at the same time. She was sure she could hear Inuyasha´s phone ringing on the other side. Why wasn´t he answering then? Was he just ignoring her? Why would he? Kouga said he would give her some time, if he wanted to get that cyphertext, it wouldn´t be wise to show Inuyasha the picture. That couldn´t be it. What if something happened to him and he was all alone in there?

Remembering the dozen or so times she had visited his apartment she had seen him use his electronic door lock and Inuyasha himself had told her the code in case she wanted to drop by someday. Well, today was that day.

The young woman entered the code and the door opened with a soft beep. It was gloomy inside, the curtains were drawn and the lights were off. She closed the door behind her and groping blindly for the switch.

"Inuyasha?" She called for him while the lights on the lobby illuminated her path to the darkened living room. There was a silhouette crouching on the armchair, she couldn't make out the face yet.

"What are you doing in the darkness? Are you ok?"

"Wait, don´t turn on the lights."

"Oh, you have a migraine?" She didn´t think youkai could get a headache though.

"No... I just...tonight is not a good night."

"What is it? Did you fight with your brother?"

She was getting closer to him, bumping into the furniture as she tried to find his eyes.

"I was worried about you, we haven´t talked or messaged in a while. And you said I could drop by any time, remember?"

Inuyasha sighed softly, his resistance melting in her presence. He reached for the switch on the lamp beside him, both blinking at the sudden flow of light.

"I´m fine, Kagome. No need to worry."

Kagome kept blinking at him, trying to process what her eyes were seeing.

"Inuyasha, your hair... and your ears...where are your ears?"

He couldn´t help but laugh.

"Here." he moved his hair to the left side of his head uncovering one human ear. Kagome´s eyes grew big and her jaw dropped. "I´m ok, I swear wench. Is just the new moon that affects my demon blood, every month there´s one night when I am fully human."

Kagome was already sitting on his lap, her curious hands touching his head, where his ears usually sat, then tracing the shell of his human ears. She then opened his mouth to check his fangs and then his fingernails.

"Wow, amazing. No trace of fangs or claws. You look like a regular human male. Does it hurt?"

"What?"

"Changing, does it hurt when you change?"

"No," he chuckled, "it doesn´t hurt. I feel weaker and a little confused for a while. My brother insists nobody should know about it. It would make me an easy target."

"That´s why you were hiding? You are worried somebody is coming to get you?"

"Don´t be silly. Who would want to hurt me? Sesshomaru is being paranoid, as usual."

"Then why didn´t you tell me?"

He was silent for a moment, debating whether he should tell her one of his biggest fears.

"Is just that I feel weird on my human night. I get more... sentimental if you will."

"Do you?" she asked smiling wickedly. "I was feeling a little sentimental myself. Not seeing you for days, I missed you." This was not what she had in mind when she decided to show up here. However, the ever-strong pull she felt towards Inuyasha didn´t seem to weaken when his appearance changed. "How did you know that?"

"It came out in the meeting today. The lawyers want to decode the ciphertext to get a look at the science behind Onigumo´s project."

"Well, I created the code, so no one else has access to the information Onigumo supplied. They should go to Ikeda labs and talk to him about it. I´m sure Onigumo won´t refuse to share it with our legal team."

"Yeah, that´s what I thought."

There was one more thought nagging her brain and she needed to address it before losing consciousness. It seemed that Inuyasha could feel it too because he immediately asked her.

"Come on, out with it." He egged her on.

"It´s about what you discussed with your brother." She paused for a moment to gather her strength. "You really don´t want to have children?"

"I´d give half my life to have a family, I just don´t want to risk you to get one."

Kagome´s heart leaped inside her chest. It was becoming increasingly difficult to stop herself from spilling her guts to Inuyasha. She loved him; she could no longer hide it from herself. The last thought on her mind before sleep claimed her was would she now dare betray that love and lose it forever?
