CHAPTER 5

The Sun was rising on a beautiful day in the town of Folde, and the inhabitants were eagerly looking forward to this day. They hurried to get dressed and quickly left their homes to gather together in the town square.

"It's finally happening!" said one boy.

"This is exciting!" said a young lady.

The townsfolk arrived at their destination, eyeing a particular building. After a few minutes, scientists emerged from it, carting with them a large, round tank toward the square. Everyone started cheering and praising the success of the scientists.

"Is he ready?" asked a man.

"We believe so, yes," said one of the scientists. "Let us call Arceus, that he may see what we have created."

A well-dressed man made his way to the center of the crowd and pulled out an azure flute, blowing into it.

Within moments, a majestic Pokémon descended from the sky. It gazed down at the people of Folde.

"Greetings, mine friends," the Pokémon said. "For what purpose hast thou called me here?"

"We bring good tidings, Arceus," said another scientist. "After years of research and dedication, we have created the first manmade Pokémon!"

Arceus tilted its head. "I'm afraid I must question thy decision," it said. "Such a process sounds unethical."

"Please, trust us," said a scientist. "We think you will approve of this specimen."

"Proceed, then," said Arceus.

The scientists began to open the tank. "We used the DNA of a Pokémon called Mew to construct what we believe can be a valuable part of our town," said a scientist. "As you know, Mew is extremely elusive and would never give the time of day to folks such as us. We believe that by creating this copy, this 'Mewtwo,' that we can use Mew's powers for the benefit of our town."

The manmade Pokémon inside began to rise from the tank. It appeared to be unconscious, but it was still able to levitate itself into the air.

Arceus flew down toward the creature. "Allow me to examine this 'Mewtwo,'" it said.

Mewtwo slowly opened its eyes, looking straight at Arceus.

"Who…am I?" he asked.

"Thou art a Pokémon created by the hands of men," Arceus replied. "Thou hath been named 'Mewtwo' by the selfsame people."

Mewtwo looked down and saw the abundance of humans standing below him, looking up at him. He then turned back to Arceus.

"Why?" he inquired. "Why am I here?"

"The townsfolk believe that thou shalt be a benefit to them," Arceus replied. "However, I will not be so quick as to place thee in an unwanted responsibility."

Mewtwo looked down again, seeing various Pokémon amongst the humans, which he hadn't noticed previously.

"Those are… Pokémon, like me," Mewtwo said. He quickly floated down towards them, causing a few people to gasp in surprise. He came face to face with a Fuecoco, who beamed happily at him. Mewtwo smiled back.

"Humans," Mewtwo asked, "do you care for your Pokémon?"

"We do!" a woman replied. "They're our best friends!"

"I see," said Mewtwo. "It is clear from the face of this young one that the love you share is mutual."

Mewtwo floated back up to Arceus. "I wish to keep safe the Pokémon of this town," he said. "I believe, with my powers, I can heal the sick and injured."

Arceus nodded. "Then it shall be as such," he replied.

Moments later, another Pokémon descended from the sky, stopping near Arceus and Mewtwo. Arceus turned to look at him.

"Deoxys," he said. "What bringeth thee here?"

"I was curious to know what was going on," said Deoxys. "I sensed immense psychic energy which rivaled that of Mew's."

Deoxys looked at Mewtwo. "Did humans do this?" he asked. "I have not seen this creature before."

"Yes," Arceus replied.

Deoxys didn't look happy. "You should be more cautious with what you allow these humans to do," he advised Arceus. "They may not have the same power that Pokémon do, but they are capable of great and dangerous things nevertheless."

"Worry not," said Arceus. "I've visited this town on many an occasion, and I believe these humans mean no harm."

"I don't share your trust, Arceus," said Deoxys. "I think the humans should be watched."

"Then allow me to assign thee the task of watching them," Arceus said. "This shalt be an arrangement for everyone in this town. Mewtwo shalt observe the Pokémon, and Deoxys shalt observe the humans."

"Yes, sir," Deoxys responded. He intended to watch those humans, and he intended to prove that Arceus was wrong about them.
