Chapter 11
They were heading to Wisconsin on a case for their father. None of the brothers talked about how they hated being asked to go place to place with no leads as to what they were fighting. Their sister was quiet as she woke up. She just spent the car ride clutching her arm and staring out the window. Even with it being only just a few hours since the disappointment of Louisiana left her unsure of who to trust anymore. But they knew she would trust them. But the thought still bothered them as they drove that how trusting she could be. But they didn't want to make her upset of who she was.
"Just another couple of hours before we get into Fitchburg, Wisconsin." Dean said to no one in particular.
"What does Dad want?" Sam asked trying to look up anything that may cause them to head there.
"I don't know. We'll take a look around and maybe find something." Dean added noting the distant sad sigh from the back seat. He didn't want to say anything when he lived with Sam for years but he hated the sound of sighing. It was something anyone would do if they wanted to get the attention but when they got it they would clam up and say it was nothing. But Dean was taught patience and had a sumo wrestler's patience when it came to Sam. As for his sister, which he just met just a few months ago, his patience level was slowly dropping.
Fitchburg was nothing new to the Winchester siblings. It had pretty much the same shops lining the roadway. Had the same boring feel like something they all had seen countless times traveling from state to state. But there was a slight eeriness to it as Dean slowly pulled and parked along the street. He finally began to feel the exhaustion of not getting a lot of sleep overcome him and he needed a coffee fast. He didn't think his Baby was comfortable enough but having three adults in a car was not exactly the Ritz.
"Getting a coffee. Who else wants one?" He asked stepping off to the side of the Impala.
"I'd like one." Christina said softly wincing slightly when the door accidently bounced off her arm. "Plus wanting to stretch out my legs."
"Alright, you okay by yourself Sam?" Dean asked seeing as Sam just barely got out of the car and moved to the front of the Impala.
"Yeah, I'll be alright." Sam said sliding his hands into his jacket. "Just pass me a coffee please."
"You mean your sweetened monstrosity?" Dean teased making Sam roll his eyes. "Okay whatever Samantha." Dean added placing a hand behind his sister's back and helped her cross the street even though she was clearly able to do it herself.
The small bell alerted a middle aged woman who stood behind the counter in a nearly empty coffee shop. Her grey lined hair looked well kept to give the impression she had not been busy all day. Also by the smile she gave Dean and Christina when they walked in was clear she wanted the customers.
"Good morning you two," the woman said with a perky voice. "How can I help you today?"
"We need three large coffees please," Dean said feeling his own body began to ache. "One black, one..." he looked over at Christina who was giving a look around before looking at the woman.
"Sorry, two scoops of sugar and a dash of creamer please." Christina said with a smile before wincing when her arm's muscle spasmed. "Then we need one with two shots of sugar free vanilla with three scoops of sugar with cream please."
"You got it." The woman said with a grin and went right to work putting in new filter and adding the coffee grounds. "That would be about ten minutes."
"That's just fine, thanks." Dean gently lead Christina to a table and they sat down trying to remain patient for their drinks. Deab glanced at his sister and saw her wince as she flexed her fingers and slowly move her arm. "Should you be doing that?" he asked remembering what had happened just a few nights previous.
"It's fine." Christina said exasperated sounding like a teenager talking to a parent. "I mean, it's not broken but just stiff almost like it's sprained."
"How can it be just sprained when I could hear the bones breaking back in New Orleans?"
"I don't know. But I think some of Mama Oakley's spirit guides managed to help or something." Christina said carefully sliding her arm out of the sling to adjust it before sliding her arm back inside. "Maybe I'll go see a doctor about the condition of this arm tomorrow, if we're going to be staying."
"We'll stay for the night at least. That drive from New Orleans was rough on all four of us."
Christina nodded knowingly as her brother added his car to the mix of travelers. "I wonder why we were sent here."
"Yeah me too." Dean said looking back at the older woman and stood up slowly as she was working adding the flavorings into two of the cups. "Excuse me, may I ask you something?"
"Sure anything, sweetie." The woman grinned making Christina cover her face with disgust as the older woman was old enough be their grandmother.
"Why's this town so quiet?"
The woman turned her head before leaning in closer to Dean. "It's the Free Masons. They're controlling everyone with some mind control gizmo."
"The Free Masons?" Dean asked making sure what she was saying.
The woman nodded. "That's at least what I was told." She grinned and rung up Dean's total as she grabbed the coffee pot and began to fill up the three cups.
Dean paid for the coffees and making sure he could tell which coffee was which motioned for Christina to follow him outside the coffee shop and towards Sam who was just staring at a playground set trying to act like a normal guy and not a child predator. "Your bitch coffee." Dean said handing Sam the coffee making him glare with annoyance. "Well, the Barista was told the Free Masons were plotting something but other then that nothing case worthy."
"What time is it?" Sam said almost ignoring Dean's Free Mason conspiracy.
"Half past three, why?" Dean asked confused to what his brother was trying to explain.
"That playground should be crowded with kids." Christina said catching on to what Sam was getting to. "Where's all the kids?"
They looked to find only one kid playing on the monkey bars while the mom sat reading a book only to look up a few times.
"I could go and see what's the problem." Dean said starting to make his way to the park but was stopped by Christina.
"No offense Dean," Christina said with a small shrug. "Let me handle it." She moved towards the small playground the mom looked up sensing another person's presence and gave a friendly smile as Christina approached.
"Good afternoon." The mother said before glancing at her daughter before back to her book.
"Good afternoon," Christina added. "Seems a bit quiet for a Friday am I right?" She added.
"Yeah, it wasn't all like this." The mother admitted.
"What happened?" Christina sat down suddenly curious.
"Some of the kids started to get sick. Like really sick." Both woman turned and watched the little girl play before the mother continued. "It seems to be happening to kids with siblings. One day the one is sick the next night boom it's the other. The hospital's thinking it's some kind of air problem in the homes but nobody can get a reading. So a lot of the families are keeping their kids in their homes."
Christina nodded and took another look at the lone child on the playground equipment. "I hope things get sorted out soon. I'm sure your daughter misses her friends."
"Every day." The mother said with a nod.
"Well, take care." Christina stood up and walked back to her brothers who had not moved from in front of the Impala. When she arrived she turned and leaned up against the hood of the Impala in between her two brothers.
"Did you find anything interesting?" Dean asked sipping the rest of his coffee.
"Yeah, turns out there's some kind of sickness that's taking kids to the hospital. Seems to be only targeting families with siblings."
"Any clue as to what's causing them to get sick?" Sam asked as Dean was unusually quiet.
Christina shook her head. "The woman seemed worried but towards the families suffering. I was thinking we can head to the hospital and see if we can find out what's going on."
"Sounds like a good plan." Dean said after clearing his throat. "But would you be able to pull off anything with that hurt arm of yours?"
"Who said anything about joining you two? I was going to see if a doctor can squeeze me in to get my arm looked at." Christina said walking to the back seat of the Impala and climbed inside.

Sam and Dean had stopped at a small gas station near the hospital and headed for the restrooms with their duffels for a change of outfits, while Christina headed inside for some snacks and a restroom break. After changing into their suits Dean headed for the hospital.
"This isn't going to work." Sam said walking through the door. Christina was walking behind after leaving the car just a few minutes behind to not appear she was with them.
"Why wouldn't it?" Dean asked clearly enjoying the sudden change in his brother's discomfort.
"It says Bikini Inspector." Sam says with disdain. "They're not going to be believe we're with the CDC."
"It's all in confidence," Dean said smiling the nurse was sitting and talking on the phone. "Just go up to her, tell her where you're from and she won't even ask to see any ID."
"But-" Sam started but was pushed to the nurse by Dean who grabbed their sister and pulled her around the corner. "Sam Hamill, CDC." Sam said nervously looking at Dean who gave him a thumbs up.
"May I see some ID?" The nurse asked. She watched as Sam pulled out his ID and showed her his name covering Bikini Inspector with his finger. "How can I help you Mr. Hamill?"
"There's been an outpouring of children getting sick," Sam said looking more confident now that he had stashed the ID back into his pants pocket. "I'm here to gather more information."
"Oh, I appreciate you coming. Second floor. I'll notify the Doctor of your arrival."
"Thank you." Sam said with a smile. He looked over at Dean as he walked past and glared at him as they headed for the stairs.
"You lacked the confidence, Sammy." Christina said with a shrug getting a smile from Dean as they moved up the stairs. "Excuse me but I have to go see a Doctor about my arm."
"Yeah, we'll meet back at the car in an hour." Dean said and Christina nodded.
Christina watched as her brothers walked up the stairs before she walked back to the front desk with the nurse. She smiled sweetly when the Nurse looked up and smiled back. "I hurt my arm a few days ago and I've been traveling. Is there a way I can be seen by a doctor to see if my arm is broken or not?"
"Well, the only Doctor that is available right now is Doctor Hydecker. I can have you scheduled for tomorrow morning if that works."
"Yes that would be just fine." Christina nodded with a smile. She looked down at her watch and sighed. "May I have a reminder card so I don't forget."
"Of course." The nurse nodded and grabbed a small business card. "May I get your name please?"
"Christina Walker." Christina said with a smile. She nodded a thanks when the nurse handed her the card and left after sliding the card into her back pocket. She headed towards the Impala and waited for her brothers to come back.
As she stood up against the Impala she watched as parents left the hospital looking exhausted, reluctant and disheveled and she wondered why no two parents were together. But the memory of kids in the hospital could be part of the problem. These parents were not wanting to leave their children behind but they needed to sleep, eat and bathe. She gave each of the sleepy parents a reassuring smile but were only getting a scowl in return. She didn't take it personally as they were hurting inside. She watched as the parents climbed into their car only to sit there and cry desperately trying not to sob so loud. After a few minutes of sobbing the parents slowly left their cars and headed back inside the hospital too heartbroken to leave.
As they walked into the hospital Sam and Dean walked out looking just as distressed as the parents. They didn't talk as they climbed into the Impala and drove to another gas station to change into their street clothes. Sam and Dean drove off towards a nice two story house that had an empty driveway. Dean parked on the street before all three climbed out of the vehicle. Making sure they weren't being watched but coming up with a cover story as to why the three were there.
"What are we looking for?" Christina asked watching her brothers start looking through some of the higher cupboards while she started looking through the food pantry.
"Anything that could explain why two seemingly healthy kids could get sick one night one after the other." Dean said making his way up the stairs.
Sam looked at Christina and gave her a head nod allowing her to head upstairs after him as he could look downstairs alone. His sister complied and quickly walked up the stairs to find Dean in a kid's room.
Dean stood in the middle of the room not sure where to start as he slowly made small circles as he was unsure what to look for.
"Dean, you going to be okay?" Christina asked gently touching his shoulder with her left hand.
"Something about this case is familiar. I just don't know for sure." He answered and turned his attention to Sam as he entered the room. "Let's look around here. I think it's the best place."
The three only looked for a few minutes when Sam opened up the blinds and opened the window. "I found something." He said making Dean and Christina to stand next to him.
On the window sill, as if it had been burned into the wood, was a black handprint leading out of the window. Sam tried to figure out what could have made it while Dean's face paled slightly and Christina looked confused but worried.
"I know what did this." Dean said after a few minutes of intense staring. "I've seen this handprint before." He turned and headed for the bedroom door and after closing the window and blinds Sam and Christina soon followed afterwards.
