Chapter 12

Dean searched for a cheap hotel and only had to drive for a few minutes to find one that looked promising. He slowly pulled up into an empty parking stall just outside the main lobby with the same red neon Vacancy sign buzzing out on the window. Dean and Sam lead the way with Christina close behind. Nobody was behind the desk so Dean looked through an open door and saw a TV on inside. Hearing two sets of laughter, also being higher then adults, Dean figured the occupants were two kids. He looked on the desk and found a bell for which he could ring and gently tapped on top. The shrill bell rang and the television began to quiet down as a boy about twelve stood up and turned down the volume before heading out towards the lobby.

"Welcome." The boy said sounding sarcastic.

Dean gave a sarcastic smile as he had felt the boy's sarcasm easily. "I need a room please. Two queens and a fold away. Here with my siblings."

"Sure you are." The boy mumbled typing on the computer screen and rolling his eyes.

"What did you say?" Dean asked challenging the boy, as gently as he could.

"I said, 'Sure, nice car.'" The boy gave a sarcastic smile which was annoying Dean.

"Michael go give your brother some dinner please." A woman, whom Dean assumed was Michael's mom. "Sorry for that. Michael can get...a little sarcastic."

"Not a problem, Miss." Dean said with grin. "I love little kids."

"So three occupants, two beds and a foldaway bed?" The mother asked to make sure her son had gotten the correct information down.

"Yes, please." Dean smiled.

"Alright. Will this be cash or charge?" The mother asked but when Dean was just staring at the two boys he didn't quite hear her until Christina gently nudged him with her elbow. "Cash or charge?" The woman asked again.

"Mastercard alright?" Dean asked and smiled when the mother nodded. "Great."

"Here's your towels, key and I'll bring the foldaway in about twenty minutes."

"Thanks for that." Dean said and headed for the door only to stop and turn around. "Uh...what-"

"Sorry 127. Things have been busy today. You're my only customer here and I have three other rooms to clean." The mother said with a grin.

"No problem." Dean smiled and left followed by Sam and Christina.

"So what's a Striga?" Sam asked once they arrived in the room just minutes later.

"It's some kind of witch. It takes the lifeforce of children to feed and it causes the child's body to shut down. Shows the symptoms like those kids we saw at the hospital." Dean grabbed their dad's hunting journal and searched through the pages until he found the passage about Strigas.

"How do you know about this Striga?" Sam asked looking at Christina who seemed to be understanding what Dean was talking about.

"Dad fought one sixteen or seventeen years ago. Don't you remember Sam?" Dean asked but Sam shook his head. "Well, Dad went after one in Fort Douglas. That's why Dad sent us here. He wants us to finish something he started all those years ago."

"Wait wasn't he the one to drill us about finishing a job from when we first started?" Sam asked surprised to hear that their father had let a monster escape.

"Maybe Dad didn't eat his Wheaties that morning," Dean said rolling his eyes and tossing his bag on his bed while Christina looked over the journal carefully. "The point is we can finish this monster off for good this time."

"Sounds good to me." Sam said. "So what do we do first. How do we find this Striga?"

"Well," Christina said using her left hand to read through the passages their father had written. "According to what Dad says in his journal, Strigas will take on the form of an old woman. A crone sort to speak."

"I saw an old woman at the hospital when we followed Dr. Hydecker." Dean said.

"It's a hospital," Sam said not liking the way Dean was talking about the elderly. "It's bound to happen."

"Well she had an inverted cross on her wall," Dean retorted. "A clear sign that she's involved."

"Would she be easy to be put down?" Sam asked as Dean pulled out his pistol out of his duffel bag and began to fill up his magazine with some iron bullets.

"Actually Sam," Christina said matter of fact. "It says here that when the Striga is not out hunting, their human counterpart is very vulnerable as long as it's a surprise attack."

"Okay, sounds like Sam and I would head to the hospital while you rest that arm. We'll head out right after Christy's appointment." Dean suggested sliding the full magazine back into his gun.

"Oh that's going to be fun." Christina said slowly sliding her arm out of her sling and slowly unbent her arm. "Just promise me you don't stay too long after you bag the old woman so that we don't look suspicious tomorrow." She slid her arm back into her sling as having it out was making it throb.

"You got it." The brother's answered at the same time. "Enjoy your night." Christina waved goodbye, using her good arm and looked over at the two beds and decided to get into her sweat pants and tank top pajamas letting out a harsh hiss when her arm accidently banged across the bathroom door frame.

"Stupid arm." She hissed again as she gently rubbed her arm. She jumped when there was a knock on the door and she made her way to it. "Oh minute." Christina called sliding the door lock into it's position as she couldn't defend herself as easily if there was a threat outside.

"Good evening." The mother from the lobby smiled at Christina as she slid the foldaway bed into view. "Your brother wanted me to drop off a foldaway bed here."

"Oh yes, one minute please." Christina gently closed the door and unlatched her lock feeling no threat from the mother. She opened the door wide and stepped to the side allowing the mother entrance inside.

"Thanks." The mother smiled as she dragged the foldaway into and placed it up against a far wall giving plenty of space in between the two beds. "Where's your brothers?"

"They went out to get something to eat. I would come too but my arm is very sensitive to any kind of touch at the moment." Christina laughed as she thought of a plan to unfold the bed without hurting her arm.

"I know how it is with broken bones. I have two kids that it seems break something every other week." The mother chuckled when she saw Christina try to adjust the sling on her shoulder. "Come with me would you? I have an old sling that I think would make your arm feel better then that."

Christina looked down at her shoulder the back up at the mother. "Are you sure? I'll be okay." The mother shook her head and left the room. Christina looked down at the floor then followed after the mother closing the door behind her. The wind was staring to pick up as storm clouds began to roll in bringing in the soft scent of rain to blanket around them. The mother lead Christina into the lobby and towards the back room. "You don't have to do this. I'll be fine."

"Are you kidding?" The mother asked with a motherly look at her. "It's the least I can offer since you look like it just happened a few days ago and couldn't get a proper sling to help you."

Christina bit her bottom lip as she looked at the mother unsure how to feel as she watched the mother walk over to a small cupboard and began to search through it when Christina jumped and looked up at the ceiling when she could hear something squeaking upstairs.

"I hope this makes your arm feel better." The mother said turning around after finding a sling with a soft cushion inside the blue fabric. "It's more comfortable then then make shift one." The mother stared at Christina with a curious look. "You alright?"

"What's up above us?" Christina asked keeping her voice low as she wanted to see if she could hear another sound that didn't seem like the house settling against the wind.

"That's my boys' room." The mother said with a curious look on her face. "Why, what's..."

A soft muffled scream came from upstairs and Christina bolted quickly up the stairs, wincing as here arm bounced against her chest. The mother ran after Christina who was throwing open the bedroom door. The mother rushed inside and found Michael cradling his younger brother who looked pale and sickly as Christina had leaned out the window marking the dark shape of a black hood to escape into the night. The wind blew against Christina's face as she glanced down at the window sill and found a black handprint inside the wood. The Striga had attacked again and Christina could do nothing but let it happen.

The next morning was grey and muggy when Sam and Dean pulled up. They were smiling but when they saw Christina talking to a paramedic while the mother was trying to comfort Michael, their smiles vanished. They watched in silence as the paramedics headed for the ambulance and the mother jumped into her truck to follow them leaving Michael to sit on a bench while Christina headed for their hotel room clutching her arm. Sam and Dean rushed afterwards her to see what had happened.

"I take it that old woman wasn't our Striga after all." Christina said trying her hardest not to cry as she grabbed a shirt from her backpack.

"No, just a senile old woman." Dean said still confused what happened. "But something else happened."

"It came last night," Christina said with a sigh rubbing her eyes as it started to itch with tears. "I was over since the mother gave me a new sling for my arm. I heard something squeaking upstairs. It sounded like the house was settling but after a few minutes there...there was a scream. I ran up as fast as I could but it was already too late. It had jumped out the window and ran off. But I caught a glance at it."

"Son of a bitch." Dean hissed.

"Well, we can check up on Michael's brother while you go to your appointment." Sam said looking up at his brother for advice.

"I'll head to the hospital with Christy and have a talk with the doctor while you head to the library to see if you can find if this happened again another time and what happened."

"Yeah I'll be able to do that." Sam said stretching. "Coffee is also needed."

"I agree." Dean said before walking to start some coffee from the small coffee pot on the counter.

"You don't have to be here." Christina said seeing as Dean started to pace back and forth in the waiting room. "I'll be alright. I can give you a call once I'm all done."

"No, it's just something about revisiting this case after all these years just driving me crazy."

"What do you mean revisiting?" Christina asked as Dean finally sat down. "Are you talking about what happened in Fort Douglas?"

"Yeah." Dean said with a frown. He stood up when Doctor Hydecker walked in. "Doctor Hydecker." He said shaking the Doctor's hand.

"It's nice to see you again. Are you Christina?" Doctor Hydecker asked looking down at Christina who was suddenly feeling like a young child again. "Come with me and we'll go get that arm looked at."

The three were lead to the x-ray room where Dean and Doctor Hydecker stood in the viewing room.

"How's the kids' conditions?" Dean asked trying to make small talk as the x-ray started to hum.

"Not so good I'm afraid." Doctor Hydecker said solemnly as he checked the monitor for the x-ray to show up. "A lot of them won't make it until the end of the week. Their vitals are just getting worse and worse by the day. I've only went home for a couple hours last night and came back to try and fight this pandemic. The parents are asked to prepare for the worse."

Dean felt his stomach roll with the news and once the Doctor saved the images had them leave the area. He smiled when he saw Christina sit up and headed towards a small empty patient room.

"I'll be right back with the x-rays." Doctor Hydecker said before leaving the room.

Dean's cellphone began to jingle and he pulled it out and stepped out of the room just in case the Doctor were to return. "It's Sammy. I'll be right back."

Christina nodded and waited patiently seeing as Dean walked away almost wanting him to stay. When the Doctor returned Christina flinched when he closed the door. She tried to remain calm even though her head was screaming to get out.

"Well, you don't have any broken bones." Doctor Hydecker said with a smile and sliding the x-ray into the light board. "Looks to be just a sprain and should be better in a couple of weeks. Although we can't really place a time on a full recovery."

"Well I think a sprain is better then broken." Christina said nervously getting a strange array of smells of soured milk and decay making her own stomach flip. "Well, I should probably leave. Got to go get this to rest a bit."

"Yeah, rest is a good idea. That and a cold compress." Doctor Hydecker said giving her a smile that was made her uncomfortable.

"I should let you get back to your other patients. I hope they recover soon." Christina said standing up and walking to the door and grabbing the door knob to turn. "Thank you for the last minute appointment, Doctor Hydecker."

"My pleasure." He said and watched as Christina left the room and walked up to Dean.

"Come on, Sam's got some very interesting news for us."

"What's the news?" Christina asked as they walked out of the hospital and into the Impala.

"Seems the good Doctor, has seen this before...back in the 1850s."

"So if he's the same Doctor from the 1850s, then that means..."

"The good Doctor," Dean said pulling out of the parking lot and onto the street. "It's our friendly neighborhood Striga."
