Chapter 15

With check-out approaching at noon, Sam found himself looking at possible cases while also seeing if their father turned up killed while perusing the demon, he had found out a few cases ago, that killed his mother and girlfriend. He frowned and leaned back shaking back the memory of how he had lost his girlfriend, though months ago, seemed rather fresh in his mind. The slamming of the hotel door caused him to look up to find Dean rushing to his bed and looking over his bed, under pillows and blankets.

"Dean?" Sam asked confused seeing the tensed look on his brother's face. "What's-?"

"My wallet's missing." Dean said his voice full of panic. "It's full of all my credit cards, driver's licenses...though all with fake aliases, it could really put a damper on everything."

"Well, where did you have it last?" Sam asked standing up helping his brother search for his wallet.

"Last night. I remember having it when we got to the auction house at night. Then afterwards...I don't remember."

"Great, so you're wallet, with your prints are all over the place where a painting we tore out and burned...Dean do you take pleasure in all this?"

"Yes Sam," Dean said sarcastically. "I enjoy leaving my personal belongings in place that would have me strung up with breaking and entering."

Christina rushed in looking a little sad. "Sorry, Dean." She said letting out a small cough. "In sort of tearing the rugs and upholstery, don't worry I didn't." She said raising her hands in defense. "I couldn't find it in the car."

"There you have it." Dean said looking at Sam knowingly. "We're going to have to go back to the Auction House. I just hope good ol' Cogsworth won't have us arrested."

The Winchesters walked into the auction house going back to where they were last night. They walked around the top floor. Christina being on her hands and knees only to be picked up by Dean who pulled her to the side and walked out of sight to see Sarah walking and bumping into Sam.

"Sam was it?" She asked giving a small smile. "I thought my father had kicked you and your siblings out for not being invited?"

"He just asked us to leave." Sam said trying to see where his siblings have gotten to. "But I wanted to apologize for our rude introduction."

"No need to apologize, Sam." Sarah said walking to make notes on the piece of art, during that time Sam turned and found Dean and Christina standing next to other pieces of art but gave Dean a bitch face when Dean pointing after Sarah. "So what brings you back. I'm sure it's not for an apology or you would have been gone by now."

"Well, uh..." Sam's eyes wondered over towards the painting he was sure he and his siblings destroyed the night before and felt the color drain from his face. "Oh my God!" He exclaimed catching his siblings attention. The sudden outburst also made Sarah jump a little as she looked at him confused. "Sorry that p-painting its uh..."

"One of a kind." Sarah said with a small smile. "However it does give me the creeps. It also has a bad past."

"Past?" Sam asked sounding interested.

"Yes. The Merchant family." Sarah said walking up to it. "Such a tragic piece of history right there."

"How so?"

Sarah held her clipboard closer to her chest as she motioned to the portrait. "The Merchants were a very influential family. The father was a well known barber and made his living off of that. He had a wife and three children; two sons and one daughter. They had this portrait done but once it was finished, Mr. Merchant killed his family with his straight razor then killed himself."

"So...this is a one of a kind portrait?" Sam asked just to make sure there wasn't any copies made.

"Yes. The only one of it's kind." Sarah said giving the portrait a hard stare. "I would be very happy when this is out of the Auction house." She said looking at Sam. "This portrait always gave me the creeps every time I've seen this."

"How many times have you seen this?" Sam asked.

"At least six." Sarah answered.

"Is there anyway I can..."

"Maybe over dinner." Sarah said looking down in a nervous hopeful look.

"I would but I don't have any-"

"Hey Sam, here's that hundred dollars I promised." Dean said slapping the five twenties against Sam's chest. "Have fun." Dean smiled at Sarah before walking away dragging Christina behind him leaving their brother behind making him forcing him to smile and chuckle.

"...So..." Sam cleared his throat seeing his brother giving him a 'go on' wave of his hand making Sam wish he was an only child. He quickly looked back at Sarah and blushed as he rubbed the back of his head. "I'll pick you up at eight. Do you want me to pick you up here?"

Sarah smiled and handed him a card. "This is my home address and my phone number." Sarah said with a nervous smile. "I'll see you tonight then." She said before walking away to finish her work making Sam watch her leave, sigh before rushing out to his family.

Sam was at least happy that Christina wasn't looking very happy from the stunt Dean had pulled. It even made him suspicious that his older brother didn't loose his wallet but it was an attempt for him to talk to Sarah again. "You hadn't lost your wallet did you?"

"Oh come on, Sammy." Dean said with a grin like he was supposed to be rewarded for what he had done. "Can't an older brother wish happiness for his family?"

"Dean, what you do with your life I'm okay with, but not with mine." Sam slid into the passenger seat just seconds before Dean and Christina climbed in and drove off back to their hotel room in silence.

Dean lounged on his bed watching his sister try and get comfortable on the couch which made him roll his eyes. "There's a perfectly good bed that's not going to get used tonight."

"He's not going to sleep with her, Dean." Christina said rolling into a sitting position and stared at her brother. "I'm pretty sure he'll be home by no later then eleven."

"I'll take that bet." Dean said leaning back in his bed. "I also double down and say he's going to do the walk of shame when he comes back at seven tomorrow morning."

"So how much are you betting?"

"Two Hundred." Dean said sounding extremely confident.

"Two hundred and I get to drive for a week." Christina countered making Dean's face twist into a scowl trying to come up with a better bet.

"Two hundred, if I win you have to clean the car in a clown costume while you're also trying to scare Sam. If you win, which I doubt, I get to clean the car in an outfit of your choosing for the whole day."

Christina smiled and stood up. "Deal." She strolled over and shook her brother's hand but gave him an even stare. "No take backs."

"Fine." Dean said suddenly starting to feel nervous. "So...pizza?"

"Are you buying?"

"Yes."

"Then yeah."

Dean groaned as he placed the phone call for delivery and nervously began to check the clock that sat on the bedside table. The small red numbers read quarter to ten. He glanced at his sister who was typing on Sam's computer seemingly quite calm.

"What makes you so calm?" He asked after thirty minutes of making the pizza order in near complete silence.

"I know Sam's not going to do anything." Christina said looking over at Dean. "He's too much of a gentleman to try anything on the first date."

"Oh come on," Dean groaned. "He had a girlfriend. You're saying he never once made an advance on her?"

"Not until their sixth date." Christina casually informed closing the laptop she had been using when the door knocked on the hotel door. She walked over and collected the pizza after handing the delivery boy a five dollar bill and closed the door.

"So, what do you think Sam's doing right now?" Dean asked pulling out a large piece of cheesy pizza.

"Acting awkward maybe even asking if he could receive any information there is for that art piece." Christina said taking a piece of pizza herself. "But only time will tell." She said with a cheeky grin making Dean begin to think she was cheating in their bet.

It was exactly eleven at night that Sam walked into the room with a folder with several names written on it. Dean had walked out of the bathroom and dropped his toothbrush to his floor. "When did you get back?"

"Just now." Sam said walking over to his table to find his sister lounging reading a book. "Why the sudden interest in playing twenty questions?"

"Dean and I made a bet. I said you'll be home before or no later then eleven, and he thought you'd be home tomorrow after spending a very active night with Sarah." Christina said sitting up and sliding a bookmark in to the book and set it down.

"Regardless of how much I just lost. What did Sarah give you?"

"The Provenance."

"Providence?"

"Not Providence, as that's the capital of Rhode Island but Provenance is the history of art. Who were the owners and how it was moved from owners to owners." Sam said with a glance at the folder that he sat next to him at the table. "And to answer your second question, Sarah just gave it to me after I asked for it."

"Oh come on man," Dean said sounding a more put out that Sam didn't have to do anything to Sarah then loosing the bet with his sister. "Take one for the team. You had ample time to woo her and treat her like a lady."

"I'm not like that, Dean." Sam said looking over the names of one folder and typed them into the search engine to see if he could find any information on them. "Besides...I'm not ready to start a new relationship. I'm still not over Jess."

Christina frowned with respect and Dean could see that in both his younger siblings' faces they were still hurt over their personal lost.

"Sam what happened to Jess, must have been hard. But that was then and this is now." Dean said knowing how hard it must have been to loose someone close. "I'm not saying you should ever forget about her, but you have to-"

"Dean," Sam said stopping his brother before turning his laptop around. "Look at these."

Dean slide into a chair and looked at the folder then screen on his brother's laptop. "I'm seeing families with dates."

"Each of these families had the painting that we tried to destroy last night. Each of them all were brutally murdered. Throats slashed, doors locked, and all of them had alarms."

"So anything else connecting them besides the painting?" Dean asked feeling he wouldn't be getting any sleep anytime soon.

"No. It's just the painting." Sam sighed leaning back in his chair. "We just got to find a way to take that painting. I just hope Sarah won't throw me in jail herself. I'd hate to put blame on her."

"Don't worry, Sam." Dean said with a grin and standing up grabbing his jacket. "We'll make sure there's nothing to pin your girlfriend."

The Winchesters rolled to a stop just outside the auction house around three that morning. Much like it had the night before, no lights were on when they parked it. But only Christina walked out leaving the two brothers to wait for her to come back.

Christina took a deep breath as she quickly picked the lock and slipped inside the door. She had told them that there wasn't any reason for them to come as she was small enough to be overlooked if there was a security guard, but like the night before there wasn't anybody inside. She made her way quietly through the rows of priceless art pieces before sliding to a stop. The location of where the painting was, was only an empty easel. She looked throughout the auction house to make sure she didn't over look an area but still couldn't find the painting. She looked around trying to see if there could be any other place the painting could be but after another five minutes she decided to get out of the building empty handed.

The Impala was waiting for her when she closed and relocked the door and quickly climbed into the back. "It wasn't in there." She said as Dean slowly pealed away.

"What do you mean it wasn't in there?" Both brothers asked together as they started for their hotel room.

"It's what I just said. It wasn't there. I spent several minutes looking to see if I moved to a different location." Christina seemed to almost shrink back afraid of the anger she could feel in her brothers. She only hoped their anger wasn't towards her.

"Sam, you're gonna see if your girlfriend can tell you where that painting is." Dean said pulling and parking in front of their hotel room. "Might have to put the moves on her to get her to talk, Sam. So better practice with your pillow."

"Shut up, Jerk." Sam groaned rolling his eyes and leaving the car.

"Just trying to help, Bitch." Dean called before seeing his sister in the back seat looking like a scolded child. "You did a good job, Christy."

Christina gave a small smile as she looked up at her brother through the rearview mirror. "Thanks Dean." She gave another smile before she and Dean climbed out of the Impala and headed inside to sleep. All three of them were all hoping that where ever that painting was, they could retrieve it before anything bad happens.
