Chapter 18

It had been a week since the Winchesters had left New York and Dean was trying his hardest to think of any excuse to go back so that Sam could continue to woe his girlfriend, Sarah. But it seemed that what his sister had said about nothing's going to happen was indeed the reason they hadn't returned.

"You know," Dean said after swallowing the bite from his sandwich he had ordered or their lunch, "I found there's a case in upstate New York." He could see his sister look from her food and gave him a bitch face that seemed to be better then their brothers. "There's a girl that I think a charming young man would come and save her from a life of repetitive boredom."

"Not going to bite, Dean." Sam said not looking up from his laptop. "Besides, I told you before, I can't see anything happening with Sarah."

"Come on man," Dean said starting to sound like a bored teenager being stuck inside their bedroom. "I think it would be good for you to meet up with a nice girl, and there was such a girl in New York."

"She hasn't called me since we left." Sam pointed out not sounding hurt but annoyed of what his brother was trying to push him into. "So I don't think there was anything with her."

"Sammy,"

"Dean, just drop it." Christina spoke grabbing her coffee and taking a deep sip. "Sam doesn't want to go back, we shouldn't force him."

"Thank you, sis." Sam said again not looking up from his laptop to see the upset face of their brother. "So I think I found something but way over in Wyoming." Dean and Christina looked up from glaring at each other to give Sam their attention. "Daniel Elkins, 55, found mauled to death in his cabin. Reporters believe it was a bear that was found not to long afterwards."

"Wait you said Daniel Elkins?" Dean asked Sam who nodded. Both Christina and Sam watched as Dean reached down and grabbed their father's hunting journal and watched him flip through the pages until a list of names and numbers were found. "Elkins, D. Wyoming area code."

"I don't think it was a bear." Christina said suddenly as the realization of the name finally dawned on her. "Oh we got to go and double check. Daniel would not be taken down by some bear."

"You knew this guy?" Dean and Sam asked as they quickly paid for their meal, by dropping down a couple of twenties, and left the diner in a hurry.

"Yeah, when I first started out. My first mentor, Jack, recommended him to me just in case I decided to go on my own." Christina looked down at the journal that Dean allowed her take. "Daniel...how did they find you?" She whispered in the backseat as tears began to mist in the corners of her eyes.

Sam and Dean forgot about their earlier teases as they knew that this was now getting serious. Dean without any other words, started up his car and began to make a quick shortened journey to Wyoming.

It was roughly eleven thirty at night when Dean pulled up to an old cabin out in the middle of nowhere. They had to stop at a local bar nearby where the bar tender had said where they can head towards Daniel's cabin. Dean took the lead as usual with Christina in the middle while Sam took the rear. The inside had a clear sign of a struggle as the Winchesters entered. Books, paper and broken furniture littered the ground as if the bear that attacked him went insane and destroyed the place trying to get back out.

"I found salt here." Sam said breaking the silence as the three of them continued to look.

"Like protection salt or oops I dropped the popcorn salt?" Dean asked sending his flashlight beam across the room to find Christina standing staring at a large dark spot on the floor. He flashed his light to catch the beginnings of tears but quickly turned away and headed for another part of the room. Dean knew he would have to talk to his sister when he could get a chance but he went back to looking over the floor to see if he could spot something. Which he did, in the form of scratches on the ground. "Sam, over here." He called for his brother as he would be more familiar with them. "These look familiar to you?" He asked shining his light on the scratches.

"Looks like something Dad would leave us." Sam answered looking over at Dean who nodded at him.

"Name, number and code." Dean elaborated. "Christy, we need to head out." He turned to head to the door and heard the soft scraping of his siblings feet behind him. As Christina left the house behind Sam, Dean gently grabbed her shoulder. "You going to be okay?"

"I'll be fine...eventually." Christina said forcing a smile. "Daniel's not the first mentor I've lost, and I'm sure he won't be the last." She gently tapped his shoulder and headed for the car, leaving Dean to cover their tracks to and from the cabin.

The scratches on the floor of Daniel Elkin's cabin lead the Winchesters to a post office in town. Sam and Dead headed inside as Christina was left alone in the car not wanting to go inside. She knew she was silly to show emotions when it came to the death of her passed mentors but she wasn't built like other hunters. She grew attached to people quickly which made her nearly die each time she got word that they would turn up dead. She slowly took in a deep breath and whipped at her eyes as she felt a tear falling down her cheek. She noticed her brothers heading back with an envelope and moved so she was now in the middle of the back seat. She watched as they slowly climbed into their respected seats and Dean held out the envelope silently debating whether to open it or not.

"Who is that addressed to, Dean?" Christina asked trying to read the small neat handwriting in the light of the streetlight outside.

"Dad." Dean answered. He glanced over at Sam. "Should I open it?" He asked after a few minutes of silence.

"Do it." Sam answered and Christina silently nodded and leaned in closer as Dean turned the envelope over to rip into the top.

A soft rap on Dean's window made Dean jump, Sam flinch and Christina let out a soft scream as she jumped back towards the farthest door away from the tapping. A tall dark shadow stood there then slowly bent down revealing the smiling face of John Winchester softly laughing at the look of all three of his children jumping.

"Dad!" Dean screamed as John slid into the back door smiling briefly at Christina who seemed to slowly relax and smile back. "What are you doing here?"

"I heard about Elkins and came to see for myself." John said giving each of this kids a soft look. "By the way good job in covering your tracks." He added looking at Dean who just shrugged.

"Learned from the best." Dean said looking proud at what he was told.

"Is that letter for me?" John asked motioning his hand towards the envelope. Dean ,almost as a reflex, handed John the envelope and turned around to watch his father quickly opened it up and pulled out a letter. "If you're reading this then, they found me..." John started then fell silent making all the siblings hold their breaths as if John was needing the silence. "Son of a bitch. He had it all along."

"Had what?" Sam asked quickly.

"Did anyone of you saw a case?" John asked making the three siblings look at one another. "It would be made of wood."

"Like it could hold a gun?" Dean asked and John nodded. "Yeah I saw it on the ground. But it was empty."

"Shit." John muttered sitting back as he rubbed the bridge of his nose. "Then they have it."

"Who got what?" Christina asked wanting to be part of the conversation.

"The thing that Elkins hunted the best." John said looking out the window before looking back at his children. "Vampires."

"I thought they went extinct." Sam noted looking confused.

"I thought so too." John said."

"Well, they just moved to another location. They were mostly found in Mexico until the heat died down in the states." Christina said matter of fact getting glances from her family. "What?"

"You hunted Vampires and didn't tell us where they were?" John asked there was a slight build of anger in his voice and Sam and Christina both could hear it.

"I didn't knew you needed to know." Christina said defending herself and moving so she was slightly further away from John. "But going back to what you said earlier. What did the Vampires took?"

"A gun." John sighed already not wanting to fight. "A special gun from Samuel Colt. It's rumored to have the power to kill any supernatural creature."

"Why are you wanting this gun?" Dean asked, the answer should have been obvious but it still needed to be asked.

"It's the only way to kill that bastard that murdered your mother and your girlfriend." The siblings didn't speak as their grief slowly spread through them. "Look, let's talk more once we get into a hotel room for the night."

"Yes sir." Dean said almost immediately. His brother and sister just nodded their heads in silence. John quietly left the backseat of the Impala and walked a short distance into the dark before the three could hear the soft rumbling of a truck. As John pulled out Dean quietly followed.

The Winchesters had settled down in a small hotel just a few miles away from the post office but John wasn't asleep. He was busy listening to a small police scanner while his children slept. However he did start to notice that Christina was the only one awake as she stared at him silently as if she was fighting to ask or talk to him. "You can talk to me if you want." John said after a few more minutes of listening to the scanner.

Christina didn't seem to care she was caught as she slid out of her bed and tossed a hoodie over herself as before sliding in a chair directly opposite of John.

"You seemed to have grown since the last time I saw you." John said trying to joke but when his daughter didn't crack a smile he knew she wasn't in the mood.

"Why now?" Christina asked keeping her voice low so she could give her brothers more sleep. "After Chicago and Texas, why now are you wanting to let us join up with you?"

"You sound just like Sammy." John chuckled glancing at his youngest son who rolled over to his other side and pulled the blanket closer around him. "You're definately my kid."

"You said that I didn't have to forgive you about leaving me. Is that true?" Christina asked catching John a little off guard. "I mean, you seem proud that I'm here now. That I've grown up and become a soldier in your crusade of revenge. But why couldn't you tell me before? Why leave me in the first place?"

"Okay, as much as I would love to play twenty questions with you. You keep asking questions and not giving me time to answer them. Pick a question and let me answer it."

Christina sighed knowing she was starting to become a bit over dramatic and leaned back into her chair. "Fine. Why are you here now?"

John shook his head slowly before looking into his daughter's eyes. He couldn't help but see his late wife in her face. The way her eyes seemed to grow when she was happy or shrink when she was upset. He smiled wistfully for a moment before snapping back into reality. "Because I know what can kill that demon that killed your mother and Sam's girlfriend. That gun, Daniel Elkins was going to give it to me but called me when I saw you in Texas saying he didn't have it. I was angry and felt like if I told my boys...and you that I was going to get that revenge on that demon, then I needed something to back me up."

"You still could have told us what you were planning." Christina said trying not to sound like she was about to cry. "I just don't know why all the Winchester boys has this stupid sense of pride. I know I'm proud but that's a given. But you are just like Sam. Not wanting any help unless it suits him."

John was about to say something but a report began to statically come over the radio. "It's them." John said standing up and began to shake Dean and Sam. "Boys get up. We got to leave now."

"What?" Dean asked sleepily. "What happened?"

"There was an attack just a few minutes ago."

"Are you sure it's them?" Sam asked as he started to throw on clothes and Dean stayed in bed for a few more minutes.

"The police said a woman called saying someone was in the street. When police showed up the couple and the body were gone. It's vampires."

"Vampires." Dean scoffed finally rolling over into a sitting position still trying to get over the word. "Still sounds weird." His family ignored him as they were getting ready to leave the hotel room.
