Chapter 31

It only took six full days to get the Impala back to running, since both Dean and Christina worked on it non-stop, and was looking like it was worth a million bucks and Dean was threading the needle as he raced down the highway listening to ACDC from his cassette collection. Sam had clenched his teeth, trying his hardest to ignore the strange love affair Dean had with his car. He glanced behind and saw that even his younger sister had found comfort in lounging in the back seat using her backpack as a pillow as she worked on reading a book. He looked over at his brother and shook his head, catching his brother's attention.

"You seem happy," Sam stated, liking the new version of his brother instead of the moody figure he had to endure after they lost their father.

"What can I say, Sammy," Dean grinned, lovingly sliding his hand on his car's dashboard. "It's so good to hear her purr again."

"Maybe we forgot the memo, or do you want to kick us out so you can have your moment alone?"

Dean rolled his eyes as he glanced at his brother. "Don't listen to him, Baby. He doesn't understand us."

"So what's up with this good attitude all of a sudden?" Sam asked, finally wanting to know who possessed his brother's body.

"He got his car back," Christina spoke up, placing her bookmark inside the crease before closing her book. "Honestly, if you had a car this treasured, you'd act the same."

Sam gave a nod, knowing what his sister said was indeed true. "So, back to the topic. We have cow mutations, and a woman was found decapitated."

"That's new." Dean said, turning down his music so he could hear his brother. "So where is this case?"

"Red Lodge, another three hundred miles."

"Did you hear that, baby? We got us a case, and we still got some road ahead of us. Let's see what you got!" Dean grinned, turning the volume back up, and slammed pressed his foot down, throwing his siblings back into their seats as they raced down the road. All three were indeed happy to have their one constant home back with them.

The three had stopped by a pretty decent hotel near the middle of town and they quickly changed into reporters which made Christina question why she couldn't wear business slacks and flats and instead of a short skirt and three inch pumps. But it was mostly because Sam and Dean wanted her to act like a seasoned reporter holding onto a tape recorder to sell the part, of course missing the small three sat in a semi circle in front of the local sheriff whose large fuzzy caterpillar mustache and round body was causing Christina to stumble over her words but a quick jab from Dean she was back playing the part.

"The investigation with these murders is still on going," the sheriff said, clearing his throat, trying to hide the fact he felt a little uncomfortable but forced the professional approach. "That's all I'm going to say on this matter."

"Well, didn't you find a body last week?" Sam asked his pen, ready to write down the officer's response. "Then you have the body with... and the head just last weekend."

"Yes, but we are looking for any leads as of yet. We're just backed up with possible leads." The Sheriff stopped when the sound of his door opened up and a young secretary opened up. After a short message, the Sheriff cleared his throat and looked at the three. "Please excuse me, I have a previous arrangement that I need to go to."

"Just one last question," Dean said with a charming smile. "What can you tell me about the cow mutilations?"

"What mutilations?" The sheriff asked, confused.

"I mean, several cows ripped open and drained of everything. Seems a little fishy for me." Dean said, and the three could see a flash of annoyance spreading across the sheriff's eyes.

"It's just how life works." The sheriff said, straightening up. "Have you ever seen what happens to a cow after it dies and lies in the sun?" He asked, and even though it was rhetorical, Christina nodded silently. "Then you should know the gasses all build up, and then it rips open the animal. Like clockwork. Cows die. A few days later, all the fluids spill out and get soaked up by the ground."

"Thanks for your time, Sheriff." Christina said quickly. "I hope this article will shine and show the people the efforts you and your team are doing for the public."

"Anytime you three. Good luck."

"Thank you, Sheriff." Dean and Sam both said at the same time before the three left the room and out to the parking lot.

"It's irritating to see police not doing their sworn duties to protect these people." Christina said her voice low as to not draw attention by a few attractive male officers that waved at her. "But I do understand when you think there's a serial killer out there lopping off heads of people, and they want to ease the public's concerns."

"Don't we do the same thing?" Dean asked as they climbed into the car so that they could try and get into the coroner's office to look at the body that recently turned up. "Maybe we can see if we can look at the other body that turned up the week before."

"But we didn't get the approval of the Sheriff." Christina pointed out.

"Yes, but when has not having the Sheriff's approval ever stop us from doing our job." Even Sam nodded in agreement to his brother's statement. "So don't worry. When have you been so paranoid all of a sudden, Christy? This is so unlike you... or at least I think since I've known you."

"I don't know. Something about this place is making me a bit antsy." Christina admitted, leaning back onto her seat. "Sorry, ever since..." She hesitated as she glanced up at her older brother's reflection in the rearview mirror but cleared her throat. "The accident a little while ago, I've started to get paranoid. Like all my skeleton's in my closet were about to jump out and consume me."

"Well, don't let it bother you. You have Sam and I to help you out."

"Thanks for that." Christina said with a smile. "I mean, it's not like we've never dealt with anything undead creatures before, right?" She chuckled, and she could hear her brothers giving a courtesy laugh before sending the car into an awkward silence for the short trip to the morgue.

No matter how many times they had gone to morgues in their business, all three of the Winchesters both wrinkled their noses from the strong disinfectants the building used the second they walked inside.

An attractive young man walked in, seeing the three standing, and smiled. "Good afternoon. "How can I help you three?" The man smiled and shook each of the three's hands.

"Good afternoon," Dean quickly noticed a nametag that had some small white writing that was slightly obscured from the bright light. "Jeff?"

"Jeffery actually," the man said politely.

"Sorry about that, Jeffery. We were informed to look at the recent murdered bodies that were found a few days ago and the one that happened very recently."

"Oh..." the man looked nervous as he looked down at the clipboard as if seeing a list of people had their names on it.

"It was a last minute add in." Christina said quickly. "The Sheriff was incredibly busy, trying to get to an important meeting, he may have just accidentally forgotten to inform you of our arrival."

Jeffery took a second to think about it before nodding and smiling. "If that's the case, go a head. Call if you need anything."

"Thanks so much Jeffery." Dean said and lead his siblings into the cool room of the morgue. "Oh, could we get a copy of the reports?" He had managed to get out before Jeffery had left.

"Yeah, sure. I'll be back in a few minutes."

"No rush, don't want you to miss anything." Dean had said before they walked inside.

There were three gurneys all rolled up against the wall with two of them already having dead bodies on them. There was one however that had a small plastic tub near the feet.

"This might be one of the victims." Christina said looking a little uneasy as she grabbed one end of the cloth and lifted it. "Yep, this one's headless."

"So this was our last victim." Sam said carefully checking the other body. "Okay lets see what sicko cuts off a head."

"One way to find out." Dean said sliding the plastic box over to his siblings. "Check to see what's in the box."

Sam narrowed his eyes annoyed at how Dean was making light of what the situation they were in. "Why don't you look?" He stated clearly annoyed.

"I don't want to." Dean said shrugging his shoulders.

"You're the oldest." Sam pointed out.

Dean opened his mouth to say something but a flash of blonde hair and fury broke in between them.

"Babies." Christina hissed under her breath as she shakily opened the lid and tried her hardest not to scream at the face of the woman whose body was just a few feet away. She took a few slow breaths before carefully pulling on her gloves and lifting up the head. "Nothing looks so special about her." She said mostly to herself as she carefully examined the head that was before she noticed something odd about her mouth. "Dean put your finger in there." She said her voice low and serious. She carefully pried open the lips and held it so that Dean had full access to the teeth.

"What are you looking for?" Dean asked with Sam craning his head to see the what could be a problem.

"I kind of see a cut or something in her gums." Christina said adjusting the head to get a better look with the lights.

"Yeah I think I see it." Dean said reaching a gloved hand and gently pressing onto the small cut. He quickly threw his had back nearly making Christina to drop the head. "Something... poked me." He reached in again and this time pressed on the gums above the cut and something white slowly poked out.

"Vampire..." Christina said softly. "So this kill wasn't done by a serial killer. But by a hunter."

Sam turned and found the first victim and gently picked up the head gently pushing on the gums he also saw fangs sliding out. "Why aren't we seeing more vampires here?" He asked turning to look at his siblings, who were trying their hardest to remain composed as they placed the head back into the box.

"Maybe they're trying to keep a low profile." Christina said as Dean was now looking over the Medical reports. "I mean you only found these two cases and nothing else, right? No disappearances just cow mutilations but that could be debunked."

"Maybe they're just stealing meat." Dean said facing his siblings. "There was animal blood found in this one's stomach so, she likes her steaks rare then. Maybe there just using the cows to curb their appetite before they can take people."

"Could be a possibility." Sam agreed as they put the sheets back over the bodies. "But I think we should try and find the rest of the group before we call it quits."

"Maybe the other hunter was killed in the process and they just haven't found the body yet." Dean mentioned and lead the other two out of the observation room. "But I can go for something to eat and a drink now. Might help calm my nerves." His siblings both nodded quietly and followed without fussing.

Christina stopped just outside the building and felt the hair on the back of her neck stand up as she took soft sniffs. Sam noticed that his sister wasn't beside them and quickly made it back.

"You okay?" He asked seeing the confusion and the uneasiness in her eyes.

"I... I'm not sure how to explain this. I can smell something familiar and I don't know why it's so familiar."

Sam looked around confused. "Maybe you're just over thinking something?"

"Maybe. Maybe Dean's right and I'm just paranoid. But don't worry about it. I'll be fine." She took a slow deep breath before following Sam to the Impala. She was happy she wasn't asked about what was wrong when she climbed inside and tried to ignore the uneasiness she was feeling.

After they reached their hotel room, they all quickly changed into regular street clothes, Christina was happy to get out of her painful pumps and let out a satisfied groan when she slipped on her boots. Sam and Dean just chuckled and couldn't imagine what they would do if they had to dress up like that.

"We're going on a bar crawl." Dean said once they were all dressed and was just finishing up putting his boots on. "We're going to see if we can find which one our victims were last before they died."

"How many bars are there in this town?" Sam asked even though he was already looking on his computer for that answer.

"Seven." Christina said taking out and redoing her ponytail.

"How did you find that out?" Dean asked surprised.

"What? It's not my first time being here. Last time I was here there were seven bars. Don't know if we have all seven or not but the last time I was here there had been seven bars."

"Well, let's go. We got some field research to do."

"And waitresses to turn you down." Christina added making Sam laugh and Dean roll his eyes.

~DSCWIN~

There had indeed been seven bars and out of the six they already checked this was the last and most likely the one they'd been looking for.

Dean, as always, took the lead and headed for the bar while Christina froze the moment she stepped into the building. The smell from earlier was stronger and it made her stomach twist. She had reached out to stop Sam from joining their brother but she had just missed him. She stood there feeling her heartrate beating fast as she fought to ward off this fear that had overtook her. She glanced nervously at the patrons that sat around the dimly lit bar and she forced herself to continue sliding next to Sam but trying to act as though nothing was the matter with her.

"Are you sure you don't know anyone matching that description?" Dean was asking the bartender, a heavier set man with a large beard and jean vest.

"Look, if I did know, I'm not going to tell you. Now drop it, order or leave."

"Very well, Buddy. We'll leave."

Christina tried to give the bar tender an apologetic smile but stopped when she smelt something from him. The smell of blood filled her nose and she could see the gentleman looking nervous but didn't say anything as she ran off to join her brothers.

"That bartender's fishy. I think he knows a lot more then he's leading on."

"He's just probably uncomfortable about-"

"Wait, are we being followed?" Dean asked quietly before turning down a dark alley way neat them. Sam turned and saw Christina but knew he had felt something else follow them.

Sam gabbed his sister's wrist and pulled her to behind him while Dean pulled out a large knife and sunk into the shadows. A figure appeared looking like he was trying to sneak up on someone and Dean nodded to Sam who nodded back as they both walked out careful to stay close to the walls.

Christina stayed back as Dean spun and shoved the man up against the wall while Sam pulled out his pistol to use to try and slow down any kind of counter attack.

"Show me those pearly whites." Dean growled as the man held up his hands and lifted his lips to show his teeth.

"I'm not a vampire. I'm a hunter just like you."

"What's your name then?" Sam asked lowering but not putting his weapon away.

"Gordon Walker." Christina hissed out seeing the man that stood in front of them.

"Hey, Christina. Long time no-" Gordon didn't get a chance to say anything before Christina rushed him but was blocked by Sam who easily picked her up and pushed her back. "Looks like you haven't forgotten me."

"I wish I could... But that smell you give off... I tried my hardest to pinpoint why it was familiar." Christina hissed. "Can we just shoot him just on Principle alone?"

"Look, you better not let your girlfriend go, she might just shoot me." Gordon chuckled as Sam gently set Christina down and turned back to Gordon. "Thanks Sam."

"First off she's not my girlfriend," Sam said looking a little horrified. "Second, have we met?" Sam asked surprised that this man had known his name.

"Oh I know both you and Dean. Not personally but by what how your father spoke about you two. Sorry to hear about his death. He was an inspiration to all of us hunters."

"Yeah, he sure was." Dean said looking momentarily upset before he cleared his throat. "You here for the vampires too then?"

"Actually, I could use your help with those blood suckers. I took out two but they seem to never stop showing up."

"You killed those two vampires?" Sam asked surprised that this hunter didn't think to destroy the evidence of the vampires. "Why didn't you get rid of the evidence?"

Gordon looked a little offended but hid it well. Christina however glared at him as she could see it. "Not everyone works like you. But I will try harder to clean up as much as possible."

"Well, best you do. Good to know we have a good hunter on this case." Dean said.

"Yeah thanks for the confidence."

"Wouldn't hurt to have a couple extra sets of eyes on this." Dean said looking bummed he wasn't asked for help.

"Nah, I'm good working alone." Gordon said which made Christina smile knowing that they won't be seeing him again. "Take care, hope to see you again."

"Okay, good luck." Dean said.

"Take care." Sam sighed not quite liking how Gordon was.

"Drop dead." Christina said a low growl escaping her throat.

"Miss you too, Christina. Anyways take care you three. And whoever got her to be tied down to best of luck." Gordon smiled and walked away leaving Dean and Sam to look a little confused.

"Did he think you're dating one of us?" Dean asked after Gordon walked away. "And what the hell is up with this attitude with him?"

"He's just someone who I met when I first started out. He's a creep, and yes, he thought one of you two is dating me. Since not a lot of people know about me as I wasn't raised by dad. But for now..." She let out a groan as she looked over at the direction that Gordon left.

"What?" Dean asked, confused.

"Gordon's in trouble. Even though I hate him, he's a good hunter." Christina snarled. "I, in good conscience, can't let him not have back up." She motioned her head, and the three left to follow Gordon, who the brothers played with the idea their sister knew he was in trouble.
