Hello My lovely readers! We are back with a new chapter!
This is the very first two-parter and it's going to get crazy! I hope you enjoy it!
Anyway, let's continue our story...
Season 1, episode 15; At the Ball of Demons
Part I
Audrey finished pouring herself a cup of tea and sighed. It was another peaceful morning in the cottage and a rather early one too. She needed time before the boys woke up and began their mischief. She knew Josh was still snoozing too so she decided to give him time.
While Audrey drank her tea, she pulled out her sketchbook and doodled for a bit. She was a great author back in the real world, but she also had a passion for drawing.
She smiled, as she thought about her magical sketchbook from her first adventure. She could draw objects, and various things to help on her journey. However, it was nearly burnt to a crisp before the final battle, but the good news was she was told it would be restored when the next scribbler was selected.
"And yet I still have no idea who that would be. They said it was up to me, but I wanna make sure I can choose one that I know would be perfect." She sighed.
Then, she heard footsteps coming down the stairs and saw Josh in his pajamas.
He took a yawn before stating "Morning, sweetheart."
"Morning, honey." she giggled, as she gave him a kiss. "Sleep well?
"Yep. Slept like a log." Josh smiled as he made himself some coffee. Sitting next to her, he asked "So, what's on the agenda today?"
"Not sure. You know, in this place, the day kinda comes to us. I don't know what kind of adventures are in store today." Audrey replied.
"I'm sure we'll find something to do, as long as it doesn't involve death defying thrills, and that freak." Josh mentioned. "I mean, the other one from the storybook was bad enough, thinking I wasn't fit for you. Makes me sick."
"Well, he's just jealous, and acts like a five year old. I love you for you." She giggles, kissing his cheek.
That made him feel a bit better, but knowing there was a jerk bothering his wife made his skin crawl, but he decided to let that go for a bit.
Moments later, the living room was filled with the Cup brothers and Elder Kettle, chatting with the group and planning out the day.
After Audrey ate and got dressed, there was a knock at the door.
"I'll get it!" Mugman called from down below. He opened the door to find Sally holding a white envelope in her hands. "Hi, Mis Sally! What can we do for ya?"
"I was wondering if I could speak with Audrey and Josh." She replied. Audrey was half way down the stairs when she heard her name.
"I'm here. Hi Sal." She smiled as she walked over and gave her and her husband a hug. Josh, who also changed into his regular clothes, joined in too and shook hands with the couple.
"What can we do for you?" he asked, putting his arm around Audrey's shoulders.
"We have an invitation for you." Sal answered, handing Audrey the envelope. She opened it up to reveal a white invitation letter written in gold writing. It read;
"Honored Guests, you have been cordially invited to the annual InkWell ball and fundraiser. All money donated will be delivered to the children's hospital for new equipment, supplies and medicare. The event will begin at 5:30 pm followed by dinner, dancing and raffle drawing. Hope to see you there.
-Signed, the Mayor of InkWell."
"We're invited to a ball?" Josh asked.
"Yes! Isn't that exciting!? Many people, including ourselves, are invited and the mayor himself is attending!" Sally squealed. "Oh, I'm so excited!"
Audrey looked oddly at the invite. "Yeah, sounds great." She sheepishly replied.
Sally looked at her concern. "You ok? You don't sound thrilled."
"It's nothing, I enjoy parties and dances. I just don't go to them on a regular basis."
"Oh it's fine. It's just a fundraiser. Plus it doesn't go the whole night. It'll probably go till about ten or so." Sal's husband added in. "And it's for the children's hospital, so it sounds important. "
"I know, but, besides you two, I don't know anyone on this list who's going." Audrey mentioned, scanning over the list of the guests on the back of the invitation.
"Oh, don't worry about that. Knowing you two, you'll make friends instantly."
"So, is the fundraiser open to the public? Can anyone come?" Josh asked.
"Not entirely. The Mayor usually invites esteemed guests and noblemen." Sal mentioned.
"Why's that?" Audrey wondered.
Then the sound of the boys running around, making plane noises with their toy planes answered her question.
"Never mind."
"So, with you two invited, why don't we go shopping? We need to get you a nice gown for the ball."
"I don't know if I should go." Audrey simply stated.
"Why not? It's just a gala." Sally's husband brought up.
"Again, not really a dance party type of girl." Audrey claimed. "I mean I can handle crowds and such, but, I dunno, I just feel uneasy."
"Well, if it'll make you feel any better, I'm invited too. We'll go there like, we're on a date." Josh suggested. "We can have dinner, do some dancing, explore the place."
That did sound good to her. And the good thing was they didn't have to stay the entire time, so they could stay as long as they wished and then head home.
"Well, I guess that'll be ok…sure. Let's do it." Audrey smiled.
"Oh thank you! Thank you! Oh I'm so excited!" Sally squealed, as she hugged Audrey. "Come on, let's head to the InkWell mall and get shopping. Honeybun, you go with Josh and I'll go with Audrey."
Cuphead's ears perked up when he heard about the mall. "You guys going to the mall? Can me and Mugs come too?" He asked.
"Yeah, you both wanna come? Is that ok with Elder Kettle?" Audrey asked.
"Go have fun. I need to take care of a few things anyway." He smiled.
The boys thanked their guardian and followed the group into Sally's car.
It wasn't long before the group made it to the InkWell mall. Josh went with Sally's Husband to look at suits while the rest went dress shopping. Both boys were told if they behaved and didn't make a scene, she would buy them ice cream, which they agreed on.
Audrey looked through the different varieties of ball gowns but nothing really stood out to her. She began having flashbacks of her and her mother shopping for a prom dress and arguing over which one she wanted to wear. They debated on color, length, price, all of it.
She was starting to give up when something caught her attention;
It was a red full length ball gown with cuffed sleeves, that had roses stitched perfectly at the hem, the cuffed sleeves had small pieces of jewelry sewn on it, and a rose flower on the waist of the dress. She picked it up from the rack and noticed a silk red cape with a that was tied in a perfect ribbon on the hanger.
"Huh, must be part of it." She thought.
Then Sally came to her and exclaimed "Ohh that's a good one! Wanna try it on?"
"Sure. Let's go." Audrey smiled.
The group followed her to the dressing room and waited for Audrey to come out. She wanted to be careful not to tear it in any way and thankfully slipped in it without an issue.
When she looked in the mirror, she smiled. The dress was very comfy, almost fitting like a glove. She didn't need a corset or anything and felt confident in it.
"How's it look?" Sally called from the other end.
"Yeah, we wanna see it!" Mugman called.
"It looks good. I guess I can show you." She took a deep breath before pulling back the curtain.
The three of them had their jaws dropped to the floor. Audrey felt a smile come on her face and began to blush. She did look nice in that dress, and it made her feel more confident in herself. Not sure why, but she kept it.
"Wow, Audrey…" Sally gasped.
"You look so…" Cuphead added.
"Beautiful!" Mugman finished.
Other guests in the store took notice and began commenting on her dress. They started to approach her to chat with her when the actress quickly pushed her back in and called out to the crowd
"Sorry. Short on time here, other things to do. Now, please leave!"
The crowd shrugged and soon departed. Sally took a sigh and called to Audrey "Ok, you're good. I think I saw some matching shoes. Want me to get them for you?"
"To avoid a crowd again, yes please." Audrey called back. Once she tried on the shoes, she changed back in her clothing and purchased the items.
However, unknown to them in the underworld, the Devil was trying to once come up with a plan to not only steal Cuphead's soul, but to win over Audrey. So far, nothing.
I would say no Dice, but it gets old.
Also, it might be insulting to King Dice.
"Argh! I cannot for the life of me come up with a decent plan!" He growled. "She's quite smart, which I admire, but it frustrates me that she slips by me every single time!"
He growled as Henchman, Bash and Shriek watched their boss angrily pace in his throne room.
"D'uh, don't worry boss. I'm sure you'll come up with something." Henchman assured him. "Besides, you're quite crafty too ya know."
"Yeah, don't let something like this bother ya!" Bash chimed in. "You're super intelligent!"
"Yes, indeed I am, but I need to be smart about my next move. What can I do to get her without causing a ruckus?" He asked. "And also, what is all the commotion on the surface world? It's not the holiday season, is it?"
"D'uh, no, boss. I received word about this huge ball that's happening in a few days." Henchman replied. "It's supposed to be a fundraiser for the children's hospital."
The Devil rolled his eyes "Argh, of course it's a fundraiser. Alright, maybe crashing the ball could make me feel better."
He snapped his fingers and an invitation appeared to him. He skimmed over the guest list, when he stopped and gasped.
"Henchman! Bimbos! Look!"
He showed him the guest list and saw Audrey's name on there.
"Cool! She's on the list!" Shriek replied. "You can say hi to her!"
"Oh, I'll do more than that! Hmmm, I wonder…"
He snapped his fingers again and appeared to him as his looking glass. He tapped it lightly and soon the reflection showed the group at the mall, chatting with each other.
He noticed that Audrey was holding a black dress bag over her shoulder and a small shopping bag in her hand. She was beaming, her cheeks definitely showed it.
Suddenly, he had an idea. A very diabolical plan.
The three imps could tell because of his wicked smile and his hands being rubbed together slowly.
"D'uh, boss? What are ya planning?" He asked.
"Oh I think it's time to have a bit of fun with her." The Devil replied. "And she might be looking for a partner. Which is me."
"Uh, but boss, what about-?" Shriek started but the Devil ignored him.
He took his pitchfork and slammed it on the ground, transforming him into an anthropomorphic wolf that had dark gray fur, black eyes with yellow sclera, pointed ears, and gray claws.
He wore white gloves similar to what Dice wore, a white undershirt, a red waistcoat, a white tailcoat that went down to his waist, white trousers, and black leather shoes. He additionally had on a white top hat (allowing his ears to be shown on the side), and a gold walking stick with a diamond on top.
The three were in shock. His appearance has changed completely.
"Well, whaddya think?" His employer asked.
"Wow, you sure are something, boss." Henchman replied. "No one'll recognize ya."
"Oh, yeah! You look unrecognizable!" Bash commented
"Indeed, that is the plan. Now, if you'll excuse me, I have a date with destiny."
He slammed down the walking stick and vanished with a puff of smoke.
After he left, Shriek looked confused. "Wait, I thought he was going to go ask Audrey to the dance. Who's destiny?"
"No, you idiot! It's an expression!" Bash snapped. "There's no person literally named destiny!"
"Ooohhh!" Shriek realized. Then he asked "So, who's he going with?"
Bash groaned and began to feel a huge headache emerge.
Meanwhile, the group was heading to get ice cream since the boys behaved themselves. They previously told Josh and Sal's husband about that earlier before going dress shopping and told them to meet them there when they were done.
As they walked to the ice cream counter, Audrey was looking for her purse but realized it was gone.
"Ah shoot." She groaned.
"What's wrong?" Sal asked.
"I musta left my purse in the store. I'll be right back." Audrey answered. As she started to rush back to the store, Sally asked
"Want me to save you some ice cream?"
"Uh, a scoop of vanilla would be great." Audrey called back. She rushed into the store and sure enough found her purse on the bench.
She took a sigh of relief and picked it up. She was walking out of the store, making sure nothing was stolen, when she bumped into someone.
"Oof! Oh sorry, I wasn't looking." She quickly stated and saw who she bumped into; a wolf.
"Hope he doesn't bite." She thought as she smoothed out her dress.
"Oh no, please. It is I who should apologize to you, miss." The Wolf replied. "Dreadfully sorry about that. I was not looking where I was going."
Audrey hesitated. There was something awfully familiar about his voice, but she couldn't put a name on it.
Thinking it was her imagination, she stated "Well, again, sorry for that. I left my purse after dress shopping."
"You don't say? And what might you be purchasing a dress for anyway?" He asked
"Oh there's a gala in a few days." She answered. "I don't know if you were invited too."
"Well, I happened to receive my invitation this morning." The wolf replied. "Sounds like I will be seeing you, miss uh…?"
"Audrey."
"Audrey. What a lovely name." He claimed. "Fits such a lovely girl as yourself."
Audrey began to feel her face blush. She has heard that before from many people and while she didn't mind it, she didn't want to draw too much attention to herself.
Which might be a bit hard, considering she's editor in chief of the New York times back home.
"Erm, thank you, uh, I'm sorry I didn't catch your name." She politely claimed.
"The name is Ace. Ace Wolf, at your service." he replied, taking her hand and giving it a kiss. Audrey wasn't a huge fan of that, but she didn't want to be rude.
When she politely pulled her hand away, he continued
"So regarding the ball, I was wondering if you still needed a partner to go with? I cannot bear to see a lovely lady such as yourself to be by herself as such a grand event."
"Oh, uh, that's nice of you to offer, but I-" Audrey started, but he cut in.
"Splendid! I shall arrive at five sharp. I'll have my car cleaned up before the big event. Can't a lady sit in such, horrible conditions."
"No that's not it. It's a nice offer but I'm already-" Audrey tried again, but he interrupted again.
How rude!
"Busy making plans to get your hair done? I understand. All women need to look their very best for any special occasion."
"No, well, that, but, I'm sorry, I appreciate the offer to be my partner, but I already have someone who's going with me." Audrey finally managed to say.
"Oh? And who might that be?" He asked, arching an eyebrow.
Before Audrey could say anything, they then heard
"There you are. Sally was waiting for you." She looked and saw Josh coming towards them.
He then stopped as he saw Ace and asked "Oh, who's this?"
"Oh, uh, this is Ace. I just accidently bumped into him. Sorry to worry you." She stated, as she linked arms with Josh. "Uh, Ace, this is my husband, Josh."
"Ah, your husband. Well, he certainly is a, fine young man." The Devil replied, trying not to grind his teeth together.
"Thanks. Anyhoo, we need to get back to the group. Nice meeting you, Ace." Audrey politely stated. He nodded and watched the two leave.
As soon as they were out of earshot, he growled.
"If I had the chance to break that pest's neck in two, I would have done it. As soon as I get her wrapped around my finger, I'll deal with short-stop there."
He then left and vanished in smoke in a small walkway.
Several days passed and the evening of the gala had arrived. It was a busy couple of days with getting things ready as well as getting in hair appointments and gathering last minute items before the gala.
Josh was in his guest room, getting ready, as Cuphead and Mugman were in there with him. Josh only had on his black dress pants, his red bow tie and his white undershirt on, with his suspenders drooping to the side, and was using a blade to carefully trim his facial hair.
"Feel kinda weird doing this." Josh claimed, wiping his face with a towel. "Feels like I'm going to the prom again."
"Did you go to the prom with Audrey?" Cuphead asked.
"Actually, no. I didn't meet her until my sophomore year of college." Josh replied, buttoning his white undershirt. "I did go to prom with someone else, but since she was going to be studying on the other side of the world, we decided to be friends."
"Well, that's good to hear." Mugman smiled. "Though if memory serves me right, she said she used to date someone else before you. Who was he?"
"He was a jerk. All he cared about for Audrey was doing things for him and never helped her in any way." Josh explained. "She dumped him after a few months and then we met and started dating. The rest is history."
"Wow, it really reminds me of someone." Cups stated.
"Agreed. Josh nodded. "Ok, almost ready. Just gotta put the finishing touches on and we should be good to go."
As he continued to get ready, he couldn't help but start humming a bit. And then, he decided to sing.
***New song: "Steppin out with the star" From The Great Muppet Caper (slightly edited)
Josh: So hand me my cufflinks
Cuphead: you got it!
Josh: And straighten my tie!
*Cuphead handed Josh his gold cufflinks that were on the dresser and quickly rushed behind him adjusting his bow tie
Just drench me in rich cologne, and don't ask me why
*Mugman, while holding his nose, sprayed some cologne over Josh's body and neck, before putting the bottle on the counter.
Josh: Go on and pluck me a boutonniere
Cuphead; You're movin' up and walkin' on air
*Cuphead then skied over to the bed and handed him a red boutonniere, as Josh put on his coat and placed it in the center on the left side.
Josh: Steppin' out with my star! Never feelin' shy! Come polish my wing tips! And call for the car!
*As slipped on his black dress shoes and adjusted his collar, Mugman opened the window and gave a whistle.
Josh: I'll sweep her right off her feet wherever we are
Mugman: A satin collar and velvet vest!
Josh: I never settle for second best. Steppin' out with star! Sad times, bye-bye!
Josh: Have I got style, Have I got taste
*He ran a comb through his hair before putting his suspenders on and his jacket.
Josh: On someone else I swear, this savoir faire would be such a waste
Josh: Come toss me my top hat I'm ready to fly! Bustin' into the upper crust as easy as pie!
*Cuphead tossed over Josh's top hat which landed perfectly on his head
Josh: Just watch my dreams come true! This was somethin' I was born to do! Steppin' out with a star, Audrey, that star is you!
*As he gazed in the mirror, he saw Audrey's reflection smiling at him. He took a happy sigh and turned to the broom in the room. He began to dance with it as if it was Audrey, doing small moves and a few dips.
Cuphead: Have you got class?
Josh: Have I got class!
Cuphead: Have you got chic!
Josh: Have I got chic!
Mugman: To think that us three are close buddies, that I can guarantee!
Josh: I'm ready to fly...well, at least I can try
*He twirled around and jumped a bit, pretending to fly, only to land on the bed, sheepishly shrugging.
Josh: Just watch my dreams come true! This is somethin' I was born to do!
All: Steppin' out with a star! Bye bad times! Steppin' out with a star!
Hey good times! Steppin' out with a star! Never feelin' shy! Yeah!
*End of song*
Once the boys finished, Josh was ready for the gala. The three boys headed out and waited in the living room for Audrey.
"Now, I hope Sally can come. It's almost time for the gala." Josh claimed, looking at his watch. "I hope Audrey is almost ready."
Then, as if on cue, Audrey claimed "Ready."
They looked and all jaws dropped to the floor.
She looked stunning in that dress.
Her hair was in a low elegant bun and had a braid that went across her head. Her makeup was freshened having red lipstick that glossed and eye shadow that made her eye color pop out and additionally wore white wrist opera gloves and had a small white hand purse.
She made her way carefully down the steps and beamed brightly at them. Josh was in awe of her.
"W-wow. You look amazing." he gasped. She giggled, and as she straightened his tie, she announced
"Thanks. I know I'm not one to wear dresses like this all the time but, I can make an exception tonight."
"I still don't see why we can't come." Cuphead grumbled.
"Because this is a formal event, not a playdate." Josh claimed. "Many people from the Isle will be there and have expensive glassware. Besides, you guys would find it boring after five minutes."
They couldn't argue with that. Then they heard a car honk outside and saw Sally and her husband outside in their car. Sally saw them and waved.
Audrey waved back before saying "Well, better get going. We'll see you boys later tomorrow."
"Tomorrow? Why?" Mugman asked.
"It'll be way past your bedtime when we get back. That's why." Josh stated.
Audrey gave both brothers a hug and the couple departed.
When Sally saw Audrey, she squealed.
"Oh my gosh, you look amazing! Oh I love it! I love it!" Sally cried.
"You think she loves it, Josh?" Audrey asked.
"Hard to tell." Josh joked. The group laughed and then headed off to the gala.
Shortly they arrived at the mansion after passing through a villa holding a huge garden. Audrey was curious about that and decided to explore that later. Once they reached the front door, Josh hoped out, opened the door and helped Audrey out.
"Feels like we're celebrities on the red carpet." Audrey smiled as she linked arms with Josh.
"I was getting that feeling too. Man, Steve would give anything to be on the red carpet." Josh sighed.
When they went through the door, there were many servants presenting drinks, and small snacks on trays, offering them to guests. Audrey took a small snack and a champagne glass and Josh followed suit.
The two then entered the ball room and man it was huge. It had hardwood flooring, white walls with a gold trim, large windows that had red curtains.
The dinner tables had white coverings and fancy silverware and plates were on the sides that were large enough for everyone to sit and eat while giving people room on the dance floor.
Each table had a small basket for donations.
There was a jazz band turning up on the far right and the mayor and his wife chatting with the conductor of the band.
"Wow, he went all out." Audrey claimed.
"Agreed. Kinda feels nice though. I feel like we're on a date." Josh mentioned.
Audrey nodded. The two found their table and met up with Sally who introduced them to friends of hers and were quite happy to finally meet her. Audrey, though a bit shy, smiled and made small talk with them.
Then the evening started. The music began playing and the food was served to each table. The mayor made an announcement regarding the donations and thanked the people for their help providing for the kiddos.
After a lovely dinner and great conversation, people started going on the dance floor while the band played jazz music.
Josh stood up, adjusted his coat, and held out his arm to Audrey asking "May I have this dance?"
Audrey giggled. "You may." She replied, taking his hand and was swept onto the dancefloor.
The two thankfully knew how to swing dance (which both have to learn for their wedding day) and danced with others, laughing and enjoying each other's company.
For a moment, Audrey felt light on her feet and was in good spirits. She enjoyed her adventures with the cup boys and learning more about herself, but there are times where you need to let loose and have some fun.
They were not at war with anyone nor preventing one from starting, but the feeling of having a night out really got one in a good mood.
After a while of dancing, the two took a break and headed to the side where a table of a bowl of fruit punch resided with small fancy glasses. Josh poured one for Audrey and then one for himself.
"Well, here's to a good night of dancing, dining, and delightful company." Josh announced, raising his glass. "Cheers." Audrey smiled, clinking hers with his.
As the two took a sip, someone behind Audrey claimed
"Well, look who it is; the belle of the ball."
She turned around to see Ace Wolf once more. However, the young couple did not know that it was the Devil in disguise. Quickly swallowing her drink, she replied
"Oh, hi Ace. Uh, nice to see you again. You remember my husband Josh right?"
"Oh, yes. The young boy who met up with you at the mall. Having a good time?" The Devil asked.
"Yeah. I haven't had this much fun since Audrey and I's wedding reception. Good times." Josh sighed.
"Oh? And how long have you two been married? You look so young to be a couple."
"Oh, it's been what, two years?" Josh asked Audrey.
"Sounds right. We were married in July, so yeah it's been two years." She replied.
"Hmm, yes. I just find it hard to believe that such a fine, bright, intelligent young lady would have to marry someone who she takes pity on." The Devil mentioned, taking a cup of punch and taking a sip.
That didn't sit right with the couple.
"What does that supposed to mean?" Audrey asked, annoyed.
"Well, with your beauty and wise mind, I would have imagined you to go find one who can actually support you." Ace mentioned. "Instead, you have to work day and night just to get food on the table."
"Excuse me, but my husband has a good job that helps us out." Audrey argued. "He loves his job and I love mine."
"Oh but you could be more than just a working girl. You could have married rich, having servants at your disposal, and not having to lift a finger for anything." The Devil informed her. "And you wouldn't need to worry about charity donations."
Josh was now fuming.
He stepped towards Ace and sternly replied
"Listen here, buster. I don't care if you ride a fancy joyride or have servants wait on your hand and foot. I have a decent job and I know how to support my wife. Unlike you, I treat people, men and women alike, as people, not property."
"And I love Josh for who he is, not about his job. And I don't need to wait on hand and foot." Audrey announced. "I'm perfectly capable of taking care of myself. Now, if you'll excuse us, we're going back to our seats, and I certainly hope we do not speak with you again, Ace."
She linked arms with Josh once more and both left the area, leaving Acne alone at the punch table.
After that, he wasn't phased, not even a bit. While he admired Audrey's charm, beauty and intelligence, seeing that she can handle things on her own like that made him feel quite pleased. He couldn't keep his eyes off her.
"One way or another, my darling, you'll be mine." He muttered.
Back with the couple, they sat down in a huff, still a bit fumed from earlier.
"Man, I can't stand people like him." Josh grunted. "Why do hot-shots always act like they own the ground they walk on? Makes me sick."
"I'm sorry about that, Josh. I didn't think he'd go that far." Audrey glumly replied. "I know you're probably mad at me for meeting him in the first place."
"No, I'm not mad at you. It's him that made my skin crawl. You know I love you for you, not what you bring."He assured her, taking her hands. "I mean sure, you have spunk, smarts, sass, and a whole lotta sweetness, but I care for you. You know nothing will change that."
She smiled, feeling a bit better.
"Thanks. I know it's been weird these last few years, but I'm glad you're doing ok."
"Yeah, I guess. So how about this; we stay for a little bit longer, and then we head out, say, quarter to eleven?" Josh suggested.
"Sure. I actually would like to get some fresh air, see the garden before we go."
"Sounds good." Josh then looked over and saw that 'Ace' was gone. "Looks like Mr. Fancy-pants left the punch table. I'll grab us a couple of glasses and you can meet me there. Sounds good?"
"Got it." She departed outside while Josh went to the punch table.
As Audrey slipped out to the labyrinth maze, unknown to her, she was being watched. "Well, what do we have here? My sweet little Audrey is going to the garden? I'll meet her there."
Once she was outside, she found the maze and went through. Thankfully, it wasn't difficult, hitting a few walls here and there, but eventually she found her way out. And boy was she amazed.
The area was a large garden with various flowers, a table with two seats, tall oak trees with fresh green leaves, a stone bench and a fountain that had a dolphin figure spitting out water.
She sat down on the edge of the fountain and looked in. She saw her reflection, as well as the clear sky with the moon hanging high. She looked up at the sky and stared at the little diamonds twining.
She remembered when she was really little, she would try to stay up late with her dad and see if she could find a shooting star, hoping her dream of having a dollhouse would come true.
Alas, she would fall asleep in his arms. She smiled at the thought.
She must have been lost in thought when suddenly she was startled by someone saying "There you are."
She jumped, looked and sighed in relief. It was Josh coming towards her.
"Oh, you startled me. Where's the punch?" She asked, noticing his empty hands.
"Oh, they had to take it back for a refill, didn't want to keep you waiting." he answered, sitting next to her.
"Well, that's alright. Man, it's so pretty out. I love clear nights like these." She sighed, looking back in the sky.
"They sure are beautiful, but not as beautiful as you." He cooly stated.
She began to blush. "You're sweet."
"I mean it. There's nothing as lovely, and beautiful as you." He additionally stated, tucking some hair behind her ear.
"And you are quite handsome yourself." She replied.
"Well, hate to brag, but I do look good in this suit." She giggled and then sighed.
Then Josh grasped her hands and then asked "How about a little kiss before we head back in?"
"Josh, not here. There's people."
"Oh come on, just a quick one." He pleaded
"Oh alright, one quick-" but before she could finish, suddenly, someone piped up
"Well, isn't this cute? A lovely couple during a lovely night."
They looked and saw none other than the Devil approach them, that same wicked and terrible grin on his face.
"Oh come on!" Josh groaned, as he held Audrey in a protective state.
"You again!? What do I have to do, put a restraining order on you!?" Audrey snapped. "Figures you'd show up to crash a party."
"Well, I missed seeing you. Did you miss me?" He cooly asked.
"Hardly." She grumbled. "I'm with my husband and you better leave. Right now."
"I can't help it. I can't keep away from you." he replied. She felt an uncomfortable chill go through her body, but she felt Josh give her a gentle squeeze.
"Look, I don't know how you got an invite, probably stole it, but you need to get out." Josh growled.
"Yes, please stop bugging me and my husband right now!" Audrey chimed in.
"Well, I'd be more than happy to stop, if you do me a favor, love." The Devil sneered at her. She hated that look. It didn't matter if it came from the one from the book or this one, but she did not like the way he gazed at her.
"If you're asking for Cuphead's soul, he's not here." Josh informed him. "I would suggest you hit the road before I hit you."
"Hilarious." The Devil sneered. "While I desire to have that, there's something else." He then held out his hand towards Audrey and what appeared was a small red box.
He opened it up and inside was a golden ring that had a dark red and black gemstone in the center, surrounded by a gold outline.
"Agree to marry me to be my wife and queen of the underworld." He replied to Audrey. "You will fit in just fine with the rest of us."
She rolled her eyes.
"Dude, how many times do I need to tell you?! I'm married!" She shouted. "I am and never have been interested in you! You're the freaking Devil for crying out loud! Find someone else and leave me be!"
She then took Josh's hand and informed him "Come on, Josh. Let's go. I hate party crashers."
They then proceeded to leave when suddenly, an iron fence emerged from the ground, stopping her in her tracks. She groaned.
"Well, he's a big pain that's certain." She muttered.
Josh turned around to snap at the Devil, but he immediately felt fear surge through his body.
"Uh, Audie? I think we have bigger issues than that." He trembled.
Confused, she turned around, and jumped out of fear.
The Devil had now summoned various enormous demons, each looking more terrifying than the other.
She swallowed hard.
"Oh darn. This looks bad." She shivered.
"Any ideas?" Josh asked.
"I have been thinking, just haven't come up with anything yet." She informed him.
"Well, it seems you forced me to do this." The Devil leered. "Now, agree to my proposal or I will-"
But before he could finish, Josh helped Audrey climb the fence, allowing her to hop over it and once Josh made it over, they made a dash in the maze.
Annoyed, he ordered his demons
"Do what you want to the boy, but catch her and bring her back to me alive and unharmed!"
They then began the chase.
The young couple ran as fast as she could, trying to remember which way to turn and which way not to turn. Audrey held up her dress so she wouldn't trip and while she wasn't concerned about the dress, she worried about her cape.
She had every right to be worried because in one instance, it got snagged in a branch and she tried to pull it out. She had to untie it and leave it behind due to the fear of being caught quickly.
Thankfully, there was no one else around to endure the terror of his demons or himself, but without a witness, they couldn't get help.
An ogre-like demon spotted them and attempted to grab Audrey, only for the two to slip out at the right time. They managed to avoid the other demons, which made the Devil more annoyed, realizing that he was capable of catching up to her.
The couple turned a corner and saw the pathway to the mansion.
"Oh, thank goodness."She gasped, holding her right hand to her chest and panted. "That was way too close."
"Tell me about it." Josh panted. "But we're not out of the woods yet. We need to go."
Audrey nodded and held up her dress, the two raced to the door but wasn't even half way down the path when the Devil appeared in front, causing them to come to a screeching halt.
"You are not going anywhere!" The Devil growled. "Now hand over my bride!"
"She's not your bride!" Josh shouted, holding Audrey in a protective hug. "She'll never love you!"
"We'll see about that!"
Josh and Audrey tried to move back, but when they looked behind them, they saw the large demons in their way.
"Oh man. This is bad." Audrey shuddered.
"Any ideas on how to get past them?" Josh asked.
"Not really." She muttered.
Before they could act, suddenly, the large cyclops monster reached down, grabbed Josh, yanked him from Audrey and threw him hard, causing him to get stuck in a tree.
"Ugh! Hey! Get me down!" Josh cried, squirming.
"JOSH!" Audrey screamed.
She was about to rush over and help him, but The Devil pulled her back by his tail and held her close to him.
"I hate for you to run away from me, my sweet." he cooly stated as he wrapped his arm around her waist and slid his free hand under her chin.
"Let me go!" She grunted, as she squirmed and tried to pull herself from him, but he had a good grip on her.
"Seems a waste to try and break free." He taunted. "And now this game of cat and mouse is over."
"Get your filthy hands off my wife!" Josh shouted, struggling hard to free himself.
Ignoring him and removing his hand from her chin, The Devil pulled out his pitchfork and grinned lustfully at her.
She began to have a very bad feeling about this.
"Wait! Don't you dare! Josh-!" but before she could finish, he slammed it on the ground teleporting him, his captive and his demons.
"AUDREY!" Josh screamed.
He tugged harder and eventually freed himself, landing safely on the ground.
"No, no. Audrey!" He gasped. "Oh man, now what am I gonna do?"
It wasn't long before Audrey was in the underworld, and found herself in a strange room.
It consisted of a large queen size four-poster bed with cream covers and pillows, covered by matching curtains.
There was a shelf on the wall near the door with a small chest, vase and small objects to the left of her.
A vanity was near the bed to the right, consisting of a small cushion chair, perfume bottles, a golden jewelry box, a variety of makeup supplies and products, and a huge white door with a gold handle.
There was a white chaise with an elegant pillow and a matching throw blanket to the left of the bed, a small fireplace along with a bookshelf with various novels and decorations.
She had no idea which room this was but gathering all she understood, this was a guest room.
For her.
"Oh you've got to be kidding me." She grunted. She was about to leave when suddenly a voice replied
"Oh, don't leave so soon, my little kitten. You just got here."
She turned around and saw the Devil lounging on the white chaise, his pitchfork leaning on the wall and a terrible seductive grin on his face.
Keeping her distance, she snapped.
"Really? You could have thrown me in a cell for all I care."
"What? And not make my guest feel welcomed?" He asked. "I wouldn't even dream of throwing my queen in a dark, dank cell."
"I am NOT your queen!" She shouted. "I never have been, I never will be!"
The Devil gave a chuckle. "Never say never, my love. Now, come over and snuggle with your future hubby."
"Not on your life!" Audrey argued, backing further from him to the door. She did not want to be anywhere near the Devil, especially like this.
Chuckling, the Devil used his magic to pull her back and placed her next to him, as he wrapped his arms around her and pinned her to his chest.
"There, much better." He cooed, nuzzling his cheek on hers as she tried to push him away. "Now, now, my sweet. Don't push me away. You know you want to be with me."
"Eww! I don't!" She grunted, shoving his face away. "You're so gross and I will never be with a monster like you!"
"Deny it all you want." The Devil sneered. "Soon, you'll be wrapped around my little finger."
She began to get nervous again and felt her heart race like a train engine. She didn't like it when he spoke to her, let alone nuzzling his cheek on hers. She thought it was disgusting, and made her feel tense.
Just then, she felt his claw trail down her arm, grasped her left hand and brought it to his face, as he examined her wedding ring.
"My, my. What a lovely ring." He stated. "Not as beautiful as mine, but not too bad."
"Take it off my finger and I'll break both your arms!" Audrey threatened him, pulling her hand away.
She kept her hand close to her chest, and held it with her other. She was not going to give up a fight like that, especially when it came to him threatening to ruin her marriage.
"But it's so dainty and rusty. It needs to be replaced with something elegant and very fashionable." He claimed, attempting to grab her hand again, but she shoved him hard, making him comically fall off the chair.
"Try it and you'll be losing a few fingers, you freak." She growled, getting off the chair and moved towards the bed to distance herself.
"My, aren't we feisty tonight? Very well then. I'll give you time to think about my offer." He taunted, as he stood up and dusted himself. As he grabbed his pitchfork, he began to depart.
He stopped near the door and informed her. "Don't go away. I'll be back in a bit. Tootles."
He then left, and closed the door, locking it. Audrey rushed over and pulled at the door, but it wouldn't budge.
She then gave up and sat on the edge of the bed in a huff.
"Don't go away, he says, like I have any choice." She muttered.
As much as she was mad and frustrated by him, she needed to be smart about these next moves.
"Ugh! He's so annoying! Why can't he get I'm married?!' She groaned. "There's got to be a way out, but the door's locked and there aren't any windows. Great."
Just then a light voice echoed in the room;
"There's always a way out, child…"
Audrey frantically looked around the room but didn't see anyone. Was she dreaming? It sounded really close by…
"Huh? Who said that?"
Just then a light flashed before her, nearly blinding her.
She couldn't figure out who it was, but the light dimmed and revealed to be a girl about her age, with a blue silk dress, ruffle sleeves, a ribbon on the top of her dress, a blue cape, silver heels and white gloves.
She had black short hair that went to her shoulders, green eyes, light skin, pink lips, and held a wand that had a small crystal ball on the top. The thing that got Audrey's attention is that she had silver wings.
Fairy wings, to be precise.
The figure looked at Audrey, who was trying to process the whole thing.
"Well, I think you're in a bit of a pinch." She claimed.
"Yeah. Something like that." Audrey nodded.
Little did she know, she would be one of the many key people to get her and Josh home.
