Gravesfield the next morning was sunny, contrasting the gloomy, rainy night before. The morning dew dripped on the leaves, eliciting the smell of freely watered grass and flowers.
Shame the disposition of those in the Noceda house wasn't as cheery: Luz was exhausted from a lack of sleep, even with her mother cuddling with her and the knowledge her awesome girlfriend and friends where there with her.
Camilla was humming as she prepared huevos rancheros for breakfast, the other kids sitting at the table.
"Thank you again, Senoria Noceda." Amity said. "I can help serve if need be."
"Gracias, Amity, but I think I got it." Camilla beamed. "Although, if you could grabe jucie from the fridge?"
"….What's juice?" Willow asked.
"Fruit blood." Luz smiled, ushering Amity back. "Sweet Potato, I'll get it. Could you check for…?"
A shake was felt and seen at the table; Gus opened his scroll.
"It's Olivier!" he beamed. "…Bit beat up…if you're hungry and Luz still has her mark, can bring breakfast and a bunch of buddies…"
"Oh he's still recovering." Willow smiled. "He only alliterates when hiding pain."
That was the wrong thing to say, as Hunter and Luz hung their heads in shame.
"Um, pardones?" Camilla asked. "What 'mark?'"
Luz's eyes widened in shock and began to shine, making her mother feel happy.
"Pardones, mama! Un Minuto!" Luz said as she raced outside and whipped out her phone, texting:
Ready when you are.
No sooner had she done this (and the others rushed out to follow) did a gaggle of people suddenly appear right on the Noceda lawn: A family of a grandfather, baby girl and little boy, a little girl who looked creepy and cute, two Thai adults holding several warm food trays…and of course:
"ANNE! OLIVIER!" The kids all beamed at the sight of the Thai Girl and her boyfriend, who was using Fleetwing to support himself.
"LUZ! LOW! DYITY! GUS" Anne cried as she hugged them then spied Hunter trying to hide:
The last time he's seen Anne was when they'd all been in Belos' mind; when he'd constantly defended his uncle's actions.
"Dude, its okay. That creepy Terra lady drugged everything you ate or drank." Anne assured him. "Ollie told me."
Feeling a little better, Hunter came forward and shook Anne's hand…just as everyone saw Olivier's bandaged chest.
"I'd do it again in a heartbeat." Olivier said to Hunter, no hestitation in his kind voice. "You're family now."
Hunter broke into tears but tried to remain strong,
"Besides, we…or rather…Huntver… blew off Belos' leg; I'd say that's a pretty big accomplishment and a decent trade." Olivier smirked, getting Hunter to feel pride, especially when Flapjack nuzzled his cheek.
"Uh yeah. Big and scary!" Anne cut in, turning to lecture Olivier (proud of him as she was) only to see Luz had beaten her to it.
"What the heck where you thinking, teleporting with that kind of injury?! Mama is a vet, but she could've patched you up!"
"What if Anne and her parents were out when you got to the house, assuming you even made it there? You could've bled to death before someone found you!" Willow added in, crossing her arms.
"And to top it all off, you brought Maddie with you?!" Amity joined in, her babysitter instincts and love of children taking over. "How would she have managed without you if what Willow said happened? Cause unless I'm mistaken, and if I am, feel free to correct me; she's never been without you, Anne or the Boonchuys in the Human world and has no way to contact for help!"
Maddie grimaced at that, which Amity saw and knelt down to greet.
"No, no! Maddie, please! We're not really mad at you or Ollie, we're just worried."
"I kind of am!" Hop-Pop said. "Boy, if your mother and aunt…"
And then he shut up when he saw the glares.
"...Yeah dude. You done goofed." Gus said. "Altough I think I can see your reason; you had the Boonchuys and didn't want to overwhelm Camilla…"
Hunter then lightly nudged Gus and got on one knee.
"Its an honor to meet you, Mrs. and Mr. Boonchuy."
"…Aw dang it, I should've done that when we met!" Sprig slapped himself. "Mom and dad would'v4e totally liked me more!"
"No it wouldn't." Polly smirked.
Anne then cleared her throat and stepped forward.
"Mom, dad? These are…"
"Wait, let me see if I got this." Bee asked, looking on the other kids. "Luz, we remember of course."
The Domincan=African girl beamed with a wave.
"Willow of the Plant Track."
The bespecled buff girl gave a bow.
"Gus the illusionist."
The youngest of the gang, now with a magnifying glass earing, beamed.
"Amity, we've already met." Bee said with some coldness, Oum shared in that.
"Y-yeah, yeah. I deserve that." Luz's cotton candy haired goodness meekly smiled, recalling the…less than pleasant half of the adventures they'd had after Grom
"And finally Hunter the former Golden Guard, who is…Anne, how are he and…?"
Anne tensed and covered her father's mouth with her hands before motioning the group to wait a moment as she took him aside.
"…Holy cow, this guys good." Gus mused.
"Mr. B is a huge fantasy lover." Olivier smiled, standing upright a bit. "…I'm sorry I scared you guys. Can you forgive me?"
"…A spar when you've healed and we'll call it even." Hunter and Amity said together.
"Of course, Ollie." Willow beamed, handing her friend some leaves. "Put those on your wound when you can; they'll help."
"Hermano?" Luz offered a fist bump to Olivier.
"…Hermana." The half witch responded and returned the bump.
"Dad! Do not say a word about what I told you and mom I saw in Belos' memories!" Anne begged off to the side. "I didn't get the chance to tell Ollie before he sent me back. Plus, how the heck do I break THAT kind of news to him?! Especially after everything that happened in the past day and night?!"
Bee sighed, seeing where his daughter was coming from.
"You know, this feels oddly familiar…." He couldn't help but note. "But considering what you saw and told us…I agree and will not say a word. Neither will your mother."
Satisfied with that, Anne brought her father back to the group just as the last two inhabitants of the Noceda house came outside.
"Hola y buenos dias!" Camilla beamed
"Swa di ka." The Boonchuy parents bowed back. "Sorry for the suddenness, but Ollie and Maddie wanted to make sure everyone was okay. We brought breakfa…"
"CAW!"
Fleetwing suddenly flew over to Camilla, who tensed but then smiled.
"…Heh. I see Fleetwing remembers you." Olivier smiled as the falcon nuzzled Camilla's face.
"And I him! Buneos dias, Fleetwing!" Camilla giggled as the falcon returned to Ollie's shoulder. "Well, come on in, lets get thing set up."
"If you need, can take those, Mr. and Mrs. Boonchuy."
It was at this point that the Boonchuys and Plantars saw what looked like a snake like creature slithering towards them.
"AAAAAAAAAH! PYTHON PERSON!" Hop-Pop screamed and hid behind Bee.
"Cool!" Sprig and Polly beamed.
"Not a python." Maddie explained, prepping a speech of explanation when….
"This is Vee, my sister." Luz explained, a small bit of her usual cheerfulness coming fourth. "Long story short, she's a shapeshifter who took my place when I ended up in the Boiling Isles."
"Again, so sorry for that."
"Don't be!" Luz beamed. "I always wanted a sister. Although…we WILL have to figure out how to make everything work…"
"Well, she's certainly cuter than most shape-shifters I've seen in my games or movies." Bee noted, making Vee blush. Maddie leapt into Bee's shoulders and whispered soenthing to him. "Oh? My, my! Cuter than most of her kind."
Maddie smiled, happy to have that at least said to the one human who knew 'fantasy.' She then spied Luz mouthing a 'gracias' to her: Evidentally she ALSO remembered the last Basilisk they'd come across…
"Well, the food's not getting any warmer, let's go inside." Camilla announced, leading the party in.
OWLPHIBIA
Once inside the house, the adults helped Camilla set up for lunch while Luz gave Anne, Olivier and the frogs a tour.
"…Willow. Amity." They overheard Oliver groan. "That was an alarm clock you broke. NOT a Wendiogo, or siren, or succubus or whatever you thought it was."
"….Oh."
"…I really liked that clock, too." Vee noted, making the girls feel worse. With a sigh, Olivier willed his Chrono-magic to recreate the clock.
"I can already tell there is a lot of culture shock incoming…" Oliver grumbled.
The adults chuckled as they heard this.
"Again, thank you so much for this. Do forgive the smallness." Camilla said as she served some lemonade.
"Not at all; this is so homely!" Bee beamed. "Reminds me of Oum and I's first apartment…before Anne came along."
Oum smiled, remembering their first place.
"Honestly, I'm just happy to finally be meeting you, Camilla." Oum smiled. "Luz spoke very highly of you at Convention, their dance…"
She tried to downplay all that had happened for now; better to ease Camilla into this.
"I don't suppose you have any tips?" Camilla asked. "for taking care of five other children?"
"Actually, that's one of the reasons we came." Oum admitted. "Well, that and to meet someone else in the same boat as us; not exactly a social topic."
Camilla nodded and smiled.
"Well, Ollie can eat everything we make, so food shouldn't be an issue." Bee noted. "And they're all pretty smart kids, so they'll know when to keep their magic hidden."
"I'm worried about Hunter, he acts too much like a solider…" Camilla admitted. "And while I'm happy to hear about the food…"
"On the topic of money?" Oum said. "I….We…Please, please do not take this the wrong way and let me explain."
Camilla motioned Oum to continue.
"Your daughter has been a boon to Olivier and Anne; a true friend and help in everything they're going through."
"Si, Luz mentioned an…Andrias?" Camilla noted, seeing the anger in both Boonchuy's eyes at that name before they composed themselves.
"And…well…" Oum sighed, deciding to just tell it like it was. "Eda won us the lottery when she was with us. And we already put a lot of it into Anne's college fund, some into our own retirement fund and still have WAAAAY to much for us to ever do. I know this may sound…iffy, but…"
Oum then handed something to Camilla nearly fainted at the number on the cheque.
"Dios mio! I…! I…! I can't…!"
"If not for us and yourselves, then for the kids." Hop-Pop suggested. "Maddie says your something of a doctor who for some reason isn't paid enough and while I have no dopubt the kids will downplay their needs, Olm knows we did and do…"
"Liar!" Polly snapped from upstairs.
"It never hurts." Hop-Pop managed.
Reluctantly, Camilla pocketed the cheque and smiled tearfully at the Boonchuys before wiping her eyes.
"Mija! kids! Rapido! After lunch, we're going shopping!"
The girls especially raced down after hearing that, Olivier smirking as he led Hunter and Gus to lunch.
"Gentlemen? Prepare for pack mule duty."
"…What duty?" Gus whimpered.
"This should be easy." Hunter smirked, missing the delighted look on Olivier's face
'Oh he'll regret that…'
To be continued…
Next time: H,V,B, R and R. As the kids shop and the parents gossip, Hunter and Vee's pasts catches up and they must deal with trauma. (Credit to MetroXLR for the idea, a serious missed opportunity in season three!)
Sorry for the shortness of this chapter, my mind went blank beyond this…possibly because so much happens in the next chapters of the other two stories of this trilogy.
For a wee bit of drama/mild spoilers: In this verse, Anne, being a manga lover, paid attention to the windows of Belos' mind and knows his full story, ALONG with an additional image that would shake everyone to their core if they found out what it contained.
And as for the Amity and Boonchuy dramedy? It'll happen during the Post Grom chapter and I will say this much; Amity's intentions were good and if she'd known more about the human world she'd not have made the mistake she did.
Until we meet again!
