Darius wasn't good with children. He wasn't like Raine, he didn't know how to earn the trust of the kid he let down. But did he?
If you tell someone everything is going to be all right and then it isn't. How do you apologize for lying when they had been lied to all their live?
"You didn't hurt him," Raine said.
They crouched down beside him, both hiding behind a bush from the people on the Owl House porch.
"Uh huh."
"He doesn't hate you."
"If he doesn't then why is he avoiding me," Darius snapped.
"He's a teenager. He probably thinks you hate him." Raine said.
Raine had been right. Young wizard and mentor walked to the other tentatively, not wanting to disturb the fragile relationship they have been building with the other before Hunter had gone to the Human Realm.
Hunter apologized for being the spitting image of Darius' mentor and the older witch told him that was the thing he should never feel sorry for, but rather wear the memories of his ancestors with as much grace as he could.
"You are good with children," Raine told him later that night. They were facing each other in Raine's bed.
"I am good with Hunter, yes." Darius said because he wasn't going to say to Raine Whispers he wasn't good at something. "But not like you are with your ki- students, and Eda's kids."
"That's just to much years of teaching for you. And I still make so many mistakes."
"Do you think…do you think I made a mistake at reaching out to Hunter?"
Raine shook their head. "Not at all. I think you did something very brave at looking at the pieces of your old mentor and learning how to love them for something new."
Raine kissed him in the kneck. He couldn't decide what was more sweet their lips or their words.
"What was a mistake though, is your purple-goo hairstyle."
"Shut up receding hairline."
"You are just jealous I make aging look sexy."
They still hadn't talked about so many things. The most pressing issue Raine being okay to kill themself in a very hastily excuse of a plan, but they were getting to that point, one step at a time.
