The Boiling Isles were as much terrifying as they were fantastic. It was floating over boiling water, demonic beings roamed the street and people ate fairies in pies. This world embraced Luz's weirdness in a way that Gravesfield will never do, and it welcomed Camila's excentricities too.
It was definitely a place Camila could have never envision herself. Camila didn't read as much fantasy as she did science fiction, though often paired together she didn't understand the comparison, Science Fiction worlds where human made, whereas Fantasy thrive because the little intermission humans had on them. Both were beautiful in their own ways.
When Eda offered her a personalize tour of Boonesborough in her magic stick (not a broom) Camila started to understand how Luz grew to love a world that look like the hell she had been taught about in school.
Eda and Camila descended near a stand that seemed to sell icecream with eyeballs on it. Eda paid the slime (thing?) person with some coins, and gave Camila a cone, that she eyed with distrust.
"Don't worry, Luz loves it."
"Yes, but she also loves cereal with sausages."
"What are sausages?"
Camila laughed, "Now that I think about it, I don't even know."
It felt like there was a small white butterfly flying around Camila's chest. Going out, on a date, with Eda. Saying yes to Eda, after the witch had talked to Luz about asking out her mom, had taken nights of talking with Manny (and herself). Asking if Camila was ready to put herself in that position again, letting an adult that loves her child, love her too.
Eda was chaotic in a way that reminded her of Luz's spark, a lighting that could not be contained in a bottle like she tried to do with her own. This woman had taken the Malta bottle she had carefully seal her spark in and trash it to the ground, whispering let it shine.
Therefore she laughed when one of the eyes in the icecream sprouted puss, and licked it.
"This is delicious, where are the eyeballs from?"
"Wailing bugs, they're soo annoying but taste delicious!"
"I once try to make icecream with beetles it tasted horrible but my husband wasn't one to let food go to waste so he ate them all."
"Ha, I once made Raine eat a hot dog; I think they still have the scar from when the dog bite them."
"Oh my god, that, that wasn't a hot dog." Camila laughed.
And that comment, reminded Camila of how strange, how new this tentative relationship with Eda was. She was in a Demonic Realm, talking about food with a witch that taught hot dogs were, well, hot dogs.
Somehow the only thing she could say to encapsulate this feeling was:
"This is the first time I go on a date with a woman."
"So cool… I think this is my first time too!"
"Really? I mean… I thought…"
"I don't really care about gender so I don't take note of it. But yes, you lucky lady are the first my heart has ever fallen for, and it has fallen for a lot of people- not always in the romance way."
To be the first experience of someone was something beautiful, the both middle-aged woman thought.
"You're also the first witch I dated."
"You're the first human too." Eda laughed and sighed, "Is weird, Luz is one thing but somehow this is…"
"I get it." Camila said, "But we'll find a way."
