Chapter 5: Emerald Forest
Three days ago, on a dark continent full of shadow monsters.
A stark white skinned woman robed in black approached the smoking wreck that had moments before fallen from the sky. She was flanked by two massive gorilla like beasts with white bone plating. As she approached, a large, scaly and semi robotic figure with wings emerged from the hulk. The two beings looked at each other as words were passed between them. Suddenly, a malicious smile grew on the woman's face as she laughed maniacally while the mechanical beast let loose a distorted shrek of victory. From the ship, more figures emerged, each filled with hatred for a particular Bounty Hunter
"Well, this is a new way for you to start a mission. Flung from a cliff." Adam admonished as Ruby flew through the air headed for the forest. No longer was she trying to hide her identity, mostly. She would finally be able to let loose and put herself up against a challenge. She was so used to fighting in her power suit, that she did not often fight without it. For this initiation, besides the main objective she had another mission. Don't Use The Power Suit. She knew that she relied on it too much, so here was her chance to fight without it and actually do it effectively. Thanks to the upgrades to the Zero Suit and Thorned Rose, Ruby was actually packing some firepower. She was now in her element.
"SQUAWK–POOF"
Ruby just flew through a small Nevermore, killing it in a puff of Grimm-smoak. "Opps" Ruby said as she activated her jet boots. She used short bursts from them to help keep her flight stable as she looked around. Looking far to her left she saw Yang doing something similar with her gauntlets before making a touchdown. Ruby lost sight of Yang, but she was sure she would be all right.
Ruby used her jet boots and plasma whip to land safely in a tree, overlooking the area. Ruby looked at the sky. Remnant was similar to earth in the fact that it rotates counterclockwise on its axis so she was able to identify north by the sun. Suddenly, she heard growling nearby. Looking down she saw a familiar white haired girl surrounded by wolf-like Grimm that she remembered being called Biowulves. "Looks like the Ice princess already got herself in trouble." Ruby thought. Weiss was focusing on one Biowulf, seemingly forgetting about the rest of the pack as one of them charged her from behind.
Not being one to abandon an ally, Ruby aimed with Thorned Rose and fired a fully charged Fire Dust Bolts into the Grimm's head. The shot exploded on impact, vaporizing the Grimm's head. Ruby jumped down behind Weiss as the white haired girl turned around. When their eyes met, Ruby smirked. "Looks like we are partners now, princess." she said. Weiss gritted her teeth, "Stop calling me 'Princess'" she yelled in outrage. Ruby rolled her eyes and turned back to the Grimm. "We should probably focus on these Grimm," she said, firing another fully charged Dust bolt killing another Biowulf. Weiss nodded and proceeded to cast a glyph, launching lightning at the Grimm.
The fight did not last long, Ruby shooting many of the Grimm, but it got annoying when partially charged Dust bolts did minimal damage. Ruby needed time to charge her shots. Thankfully the Plasma Whip came in handy, burning some of the Grimm when augmented with fire Dust and allowing her to throw the beasts into each other. She really needed to get herself a melee weapon.
Finally the last Grimm was dispatched and the two girls looked at each other. "OK, I don't know who you think you are, but you should start acting your own age and stop showing off!" lectured Weiss. "OK, Ice Queen, let's start this over and make sure we both have this straight." Said Ruby, already regretting her decision to partner up with this girl. "1, My name is Ruby Rose, we met in the courtyard while I was wearing a blond wig. 2, If you are implying that I am acting younger than 17 and you want me to act my age, then I am acting my age. Despite my height, I am 15. I would also say that I am more mature than any 17 year old." That last bit seemed to just get Weiss even more riled up. "Why are you here then! You're too young!" She said. "Early admittance authorized by the headmaster," Ruby deadpanned.
At this point Weiss gave up. "Gahh, whatever! Let's just get the relic," and she stomped off… in the opposite direction of the temple. Rolling her eyes Ruby humored the girl and followed.
10 minutes later, Ruby was leaning against a tree as she watched Weiss pace back and forth. Weiss was lost, Ruby knew that for sure. She was just wondering how long it would take for her to figure it out. "It's definitely this way." Weiss said, walking in one "Wrong" direction. She got all of 5 meters before turning and walking in another "Wrong" direction. This continued for a bit, all the while Ruby was thinking, "Wrong, wrong wrong, wrong. Wait, that's actually the ri– nevermind, wrong again." Finally Weiss said, "Alright, it's official, we are lost!"
Ruby looks at her scroll, the one she bought a few days ago, and pressed stop on the stopwatch. "Congratulations! It took you 10 minutes on the dot, to figure out that you had no idea where we're going." she said sarcastically. Ruby was not normally like this… as the person she was with was not one to be full of themselves. "I know EXACTLY where we're going!" Weiss said indignantly "We're going to… the Forest Temple!" Ruby rolled her eyes, "Yes but do you know how to get there?" Weiss whipped around and glared at Ruby, "Oh, stop it! You don't know where we are either!" Ruby snorted at this, "On the contrary, I do. I was launched about 2 kilometers from the cliff, where I met you. For about 8 minutes we traveled at about 6.4 kmph BACK to the cliffs, so we are just over 1 kilometer away from where we started." Ruby recited.
Weiss's jaw dropped. "W what! Why didn't you say anything?!" Ruby pinched the bridge of her nose. "One, if I told you, you would have blown me off saying I was lying. Two, I wanted to see how long you would go before figuring out that something was wrong." Weiss was none too happy about this, "Why you lit–" "Anyway, we should really work on catching up." Ruby interrupted Weiss's tantrum, "And you are not going to like it." She finished, an evil smile growing on her face. "Sometimes I wonder what is scarier, the fake evil copies of Ruby, or the actual Evil Ruby." Thought Adam.
15 seconds later Ruby was on the back of a Giant Nevermore, using her Plasma Whip as raines, while Weiss hung on for dear life. "How the hell did you get me in this situation!" She yelled at Ruby over the wind. "Simple, I grabbed you, grappled this thing with my whip, and pulled us on!" Ruby yelled back. She then looked back down. They were headed north and they were covering ground quickly. Soon she spotted a crumbling white building. "We are here! Time to jump." Ruby said. "Wait, What!" Weiss screamed, but Ruby was already gone plummeting towards the temple.
As Ruby got closer, she noticed something interesting. While there was the main building where she saw two familiar people with yellow and black hair, there was another in better condition that had a crouching statue that she had seen many times before. "The Chozo have a temple here? How?!" Ruby thought in amazement, but filed it away for later. Getting her feet under her, Ruby set off her jet boots, slowing her descent. Good thing she did, because a moment later Jaune flew past right below her, slamming into a tree. Firing her boots one more time, Ruby landed Right in front of Yang and Blake.
"Hi Yang. Hi Blake." Ruby said. "Hey Rubes, glad to see you made it. Why were you falling and when were you going to tell me you had Rocket Boots?!" Yang asked with mock anger. Ruby shrugged, "First, I was riding a Nevermore with Weiss, who is my partner. Second, Sorry, it completely slipped my mind." Ruby said. That was when Blake interrupted, "I'm sorry but have we met? I don't remember giving you my name." Aw {Crap}, Sorry Blake," Ruby said, cursing in Chozo, "Yah, we have. It's me Samus, I was wearing a wig earlier to surprise my sister Yang. Until this morning, she thought I was dead. My full name is Ruby Samus Rose." Ruby said, rubbing the back of her head.
"Speaking of Weiss, where is she?" asked Yang. "She will be here soon," Ruby replied. Suddenly behind Ruby, a bear like Grimm Ruby identified as an Ursa came charging into the clearing. It reared up on its hind legs and roared, but was cut off by an explosion and a high pitched, "Yeehaw!" The Ursa fell down, dead, revealing that Nora had been riding the thing. She rolled off of the Grimm when it hit the ground. Getting up she looked back at it. "Aww. It's broken." she said, in sincere disappointment. "Nora?!" Ren's voice came as he climbed up from behind the Ursa, "{Please… …don't ever do that again." He begged while panting heavily. However Nora had disappeared once, again heading to the relics. "Ooooo…" She voiced as she looked at a Golden Rook piece. "Huh, chess pieces." Thought Ruby as Nora grabbed the Rook. "I'm the Queen of the castle, I'm Queen of the castle!" She sang before getting yelled at by Ren, "NORA!" Nora chuckled and saluted, "Hehehe, coming Ren!" She said before skipping over to him.
"Did that girl just ride in on an Ursa?" Yang questioned as they stared at Nore in disbelief. Blake tried to say something when there was a screech of a Grimm and the sound of a tree falling down. To their right Pyrrha came sprinting into the clearing, being chased by a Deathstalker. "Did she just Rub all the way here with a Deathstalker on her tail?" Blake asked this time. That is when Yang lost it. "I can't take it anymore!" she shouted and, to Ruby's surprise, literally exploded with fire. "OK, my sister is a walking firebomb. That is DEFINITELY normal." Ruby noted sarcastically. "Could everyone just chill out for two seconds before something crazy happens again?" Yang finished.
Exactly two seconds later Ruby looked up. "Uhh guys," she said pointing up. They all looked up to see Weiss hanging from the talon of the Nevermore. "How could you leave me?!" screamed Weiss. "Holy Shit! You actually did ride a Nevermore here" Muttered Yang. "I said 'Jump'..." Ruby hollered back. "She's gonna fall." Blake said. Rolling her eyes Ruby replied, She'll be fine. We already were thrown off of a cliff." Right at that moment Weiss let go. "She's falling" Deadpanned Blake. A moment later, Jaune actually jumped out of the tree and caught Weiss midair. "Just dropping in?" he asked, before looking down. "Oh, Gods" as both of them plummeted to the ground Jaune hitting face first and Weiss landing on his back. "My hero…" Weiss said sarcastically followed by Jaune's "My back…"
In the background, Pyrrha was still running from the Deathstalker. She then ran towards the group before tripping and falling in front of the group. "Great! The gang's all here!" Yang said with obvious annoyance. "Now we can die together!" Face palming, Ruby activated her Plasma Whip. "Sorry, but I have been through too much to die from an overgrown scorpion." And she disappeared in a burst of petals towards the Deathstalker. "Ruby, wait!" Yang called after her.
As Ruby approached the Grimm, she jumped over a claw swipe. Lashing out, she wrapped her whip around the head of the Grimm, swinging herself onto its back. The monster began to buck, trying to throw her off. Riding it like a Bullfighter Ruby held on, as she activated the fire augmentation. That was when Ruby heard another screech, coming from behind her. Looking back she saw the Nevermore suddenly launch its feathers at Ruby. Before Ruby could dodge, the feathers were blocked and the back side of the Deathstalker was covered by… {ICE! SHIT!} Ruby squawked in Chozo as she used her jet boots to get away from the cursed stuff.
Ruby looked to see Weiss with her saber, Myrtenaster. "You are impertinent, brash, ideotic, and don't even get me started on your fighting style." She said turning to Ruby. "Ouch, way to hit where it hurts. She does have a point. I need to work on fighting like this." Ruby thought. "And I suppose, I can be a bit… difficult." Weiss continued. "Understatement of the century" Ruby deadpanned in her mind. "But if we're going to do this, we're going to have to do this together." Weiss finished. Ruby smiled at this, "Glad we are on the same page now, Weiss. However, we really should grab a relic and go."
Both got up and ran back to the others not noticing that Blake was looking at Ruby with a raised eyebrow. Ruby was immediately smothered by a bear hug from her sister, "Don't ever do that! I thought I was going to lose you again." Ruby smiled and hugged Yang back. "Don't worry, It's going to take a lot more that an overgrown chicken to bring me down." Ruby reassured her sister. They broke apart and turned to look at everyone else. That was when Jaune spoke up, "That thing is circling back! What are we going to do?!" They all looked to see the Nevermore turning to make another pass. "Look, there's no sense in dilly-dallying." Weiss said. "Our objective is right in front of us." She indicated towards the remaining chess pieces.
"She's right," Ruby said, actually drawing out a smile from Weiss. "We came here for the relics and get back to the cliffs and we were told to fight our way through whatever we came upon, not definitively kill everything, just get past them. If I have learned anything during my own adventures, it is when one should look past the opposition and head towards the objective. And right now is that time!" She finished "Rub and live, that's something I can get behind." Said Jaune. "Correction, it's completing the mission." Ruby walked up to the relics and grabbed the knight, while Jaune grabbed the Rook.
The Deathstalker let out a screech as it struggled against the ice starting to crack it. "Time we left," said Ren and the 8 of them took off running back towards the cliff. Blake held back a moment, "What was that, it looked like Ruby was afraid of the ice and what was that she said? I have never heard that language." Blake thought before running after the rest.
Under the cover of the trees, the 7 student hopefuls and the veteran bounty hunter were able to make it to the cliffs where they started. However, between them and their goal was another set of ruins and a canyon with a crumbling bridge spanning the length. Normally this would not be a problem, but as they ran towards the cliff and ruins they were left completely exposed to their aerial assailant. "Take cover!" Ruby called as the Nevermore let fly another burrage of feathers. Everyone took cover, getting behind pillars and walls.
Ruby dove behind a statue. Looking at it, Ruby realized that it was another crouching Chozo statue. "What the hell? Another? I should really check in on this later." she thought. A second later Yang joined her as everyone watched the Nevermore land on a ruined tower. "Well that's great!" Yang so helpfully mentioned. Ruby, having been raised by bird people, never thought she would hate a bird this much, even after Raven Beak. Right at that moment, the Deathstalker burst through the trees with a roar and charged at the group. "Oh, man run!" yelled Jaune, everyone following his lead in running for the bridge.
"Nora, distract it," ordered Ren, his partner all too eager to do so. She ran out, dodging another volley of feathers and pulled out her grenade launcher, Magnhild, and started lobbing heart marked grenades at the overgrown bird. A few hit the bird in its face causing it to fly away for the moment. However, while she was distracted, the Deathstalker had charged up behind her. Thankfully, it was stopped by the two resident ninjas, Blake and Ren, as they slashed at the front of it while Weiss grabbed Nora and launched both of them with a glyph.
On the bridge, Jaune and Pyrrha were running side by side when Pyrrha looked back seeing the situation. She told Jaune to keep going before pulling out her spear and shield, stopping, then facing the opposition. She shifted her spear, Milo, into rifle form and started firing at the Deathstalker as everyone else passed, only turning back around to run with Blake in the back avoiding the claws of the death stalker.
Everyone was about at the middle of the bridge when the Nevermore returned. It flew right at them, forcing everyone to either jump forward or backward to avoid falling as the Grimm smashed through the bridge, destroying it. On the side with the Deathstalker was Blake, Pyrrha, and Ren. On the other side, now facing the Nevermore was Ruby, Yang, Weiss, Jaune, and Nora. Jaune looked back towards his partner as he saw them re-engage with the Deathstalker. He saw Blake get hit back and Ren charge forward while Pyrrha fired her rifle. "Man, we gotta get over there!" He said "They need help!" (Un)lucky for him, Nora had a plan. "Let's do this!" she said. Jaune looked at her confused then down, "Yah… but uh, I can't make that jump." Nora only smiled, took her grenade launcher, smacking him back, and formed it into its maul form. Jumping up, she slammed her hammer down with the help of a grenade, destroying it and sending Jaune flying, "No, no , no , no, no!" was all he got out.
She then turned around and fired another grenade to launch her across the gap after him and slammed her hammer into the Deathstalker. This left her vulnerable, as the scorpion tried to hit her with its tail. She used a grenade to jump back, but she accidentally pushed Blake off of the edge. As Blake was falling, she saw the Nevermore flying around explosion launched from Yang's gauntlets. She used her weapon, Gambol Shroud, to latch onto another section of the bridge and swing herself back up. Using her semblance, she boosted herself further, to fly past the Nevermores head. She slashed its head a few times before launching herself with another shadow clone to run along its back, slashing all the way. She then jumped and landed next to Ruby who fired another fully charged Fire Dust Bolt.
"It's tougher than it looks!" she called out. "Then let's hit it with everything we've got!" yang said, reloading Ember Celica. Ruby decided to switch to Plasma, augmenting it with fire dust, Blake switched to handgun mode, and Weiss started rapidly changing Dust types. They all started to fire their barrages, attempting to cause some damage. However nothing seemed to be effective nor did it hinder the Nevermore's collision course with the tower. The Grimm flew right through the supporting columns causing the entire tower to collapse. Ruby and the others began running up the rubble, using their weapons and semblances to jump from rubble to rubble as they fell down.
Ruby and Weiss landed on an intact bridge segment together and both looked at the Nevermore as it circled once more. "None of this is working!" admonished Weiss. She was right, none of their attacks were doing anything. "If only I could use a Shine Spark!" thought Ruby, "but it only works when… I…" she looked around at the others. She saw Blake use her weapon's bungie-like ribbon, to throw herself up onto another ledge. That was when she had an idea. She looked at Weiss, "I have a plan, but I am going to need everyone's help! Cover me!" and she leaped off using her Plasma whip as Weiss charged off.
(Cue Red like Roses Part 2)
Yang stood at the top of what remained of the tower, firing off Dust shots at the Nevermore. Reloading, she fired one more right into the bird's face causing it to screech in pain. It then turned around and flew right at her, trying to eat Yang. Instead, Yang jumped into the mouth and held it open. Firing explosive dust shots down the Grimm's throat. "I! (Bang) Hope! (Bang) You're! (Bang) Hung-(Bang)-ry! (Bang)" she said, firing with each syllable. Seeing that she got the Grimm in positioning, Yang leaped down with a backflip.
The Nevermore continued to fly straight into the cliff and fell down. It started to get up, letting out another screech as Yang launched herself towards Ruby, passing Weiss who sped in the opposite direction. Using Ice Dust, she froze the Nevermore in place before it could take off, and jumped back to Ruby. Blake was standing on a pillar and threw Gambol Shroud across to the other one, where Yang grabbed it, anchoring it in the stone. Blake then wrapped the other end of the ribbon around her own pillar. Ruby boosted with her boots into the ribbon, stretching it as far as it would go, and was held in place by a Gravity glyph by Weiss.
"Of course you would come up with this idea." Weiss said. Ruby turned to her, "To be fair, this is probably not the craziest thing I have done. You think you can make the shot?" the bounty hunter replied. "Hmph. Can I?" At this, Ruby glared at Weiss, not appreciating the sarcasm . "Of course I can!" she retorted, and the two looked back at the Nevermore who was just about to break out. Ruby charged her jet boots and her semblance, and blasted off running with an extra boost from the glyph and slingshot. The three girls watched in amazement as Ruby dashed away at speeds that no human being should have been able to achieve. Then they hear a noise, the sound of something charging coming from Ruby.
The sound reached a fever pitch right as Ruby got close to the Nevermore, the bird having just broken free of the ice. Then, when Ruby was right underneath the Grimm, she instantly stopped, crouching down to the confusion of the three girls. That confusion turned to absolute shock as Ruby jumped, shooting up at sonic speeds. She slammed into the Nevermore, driving it upward and against the cliff, dragging it with her, her jet boots continuing to propel her with the unconventionally gained Shine Spark. At the top, the Nevermore got stuck on a jutting rock, just as Ruby started spinning head over heels activating the Screw Attack module, the haze of plasmatic energy surrounding her as she sliced fully through the Nevermore, finally killing it. Ruby continued up another 20 meters before descending, using her boots to soften the landing at the top of the cliff.
(End music)
"Whew, it worked," Ruby thought. "It may not be the craziest thing you have done, but it was definitely the most stupid." commented Adam in her ear. "Oh shut up old man, you're just jealous that you can't do that yourself," Ruby retorted, she could have sworn that she heard the AI laugh. Looking back down, she saw the other 7 students looking at her in aw, the Deathstalker presumably dead. "Well, so much for keeping a low profile."Ruby muttered, then looking at the ruins she thought, "I am going to need to investigate these Ruins. Maybe I should talk to the headmaster about it."
"Russel Thrush, Cardin Winchester, Dove Bronzewing, Sky Lark." Called out Professor Ozpin. "The four of you retrieved the black bishop pieces. From this day forward, you will mork together as… Team CRDL (Cardinal). Lead by… Cardin Winchester." The audience clapped for the four boys as they left the stage. Then four more people walked on. "Jaune Arc, Lie Ren, Pyrrha Nikos, Nora Valkyrie. The four of you retrieved the white rook pieces. From this day forward, you will work together as… Team JNPR (Juniper)." As Ozpin said, Nora hugged Ren while giggling. "Lead by…" Jaune looked at Pyrrha, expecting her to be the leader, but it was not to be. "Jaune Arc!" This caught Jaune off guard, "Huh… L-lead by…?" so much so that when Pyrrha punched his shoulder, he stumbled and fell.
Finally, it was Ruby's team. "And Finally, Blake Belladonna, Ruby Rose, Weiss Schnee, and Yang Xiao Long. The four of you retrieved the white knight pieces. From this day forward, you will work together as… Team RWBY (Ruby)." The real Ruby did not like where this was going, "Please tell me this is not going where I think it is going? The name is bad enough!" she thought. "Lead by… Ruby Rose." This shocked Weiss and she looked at her new leader and partner as Ruby groaned and face palmed. "Crap," Ruby muttered as she was hugged by Yang. "I'm so proud of you!" she said. Ozpin looked at the team. "Looks like things are shaping up to be an… interesting year," he said.
After the ceremony, Ruby was talking to her team, "OK, guys. I know you have questions, but I need to go talk to Professor Ozpin first. I will answer what I feel comfortable answering at the dorm, see you there," she said as she ran off before she could get mobbed by her team. "Hey get back here!" and "You better!" - s followed her as she traveled to the Beacon tower and Ozpin's office.
When she arrived in the elevator, and walked into the room, she looked around. Saying there were gears everywhere was putting it lightly. It was essentially MADE of gears, pulleys, and other mechanical pieces. "Well, it is in a giant clock." Ruby thought. There was not much in the office, A desk, a few chairs, and a bookshelf with books and some trinkets. Sitting in the chair behind the desk watching replays of the initiation was Professor Ozpin and behind and to the side was Professor Goodwitch.
"Good evening, Miss Rose." said Ozpin "You put up quite the show with your team during the initiation." he complemented "Thank you, sir. However, the issue with the Nevermore and Deathstalker type Grimm could have been dealt with better." Ruby replied, accidentally sliding into her professional mode. Ozpin chuckled, "You don't need to be so formal here Ruby. This is not Atlas." this had Ruby blushing in embarrassment. "I'm sorry, despite being young, I spent some time in the Galactic Federations military. That along with all the years of being a professional bounty hunter, I tend to do that in front of authority that I trust and/or respect."
"That is no problem, though I do have a question before we get to why you are here. What was this?" he asked, showing her when she used Shine Spark and Screw Attack to kill the Nevermore. Ruby chuckled, "That actually was something that I can't normally do without my suit, a Shine Spark. Normally achieved using the Speed Booster upgrade, as I move faster, my thrusters charge up with kinetic energy. Only when fully charged can I use a Shine Spark to launch myself at supersonic speeds and using the Speed Booster is usually the only way to obtain the speed needed to charge. The last bit was the Screw Attack. I can use that, even without my suit. I have never used them in tandem before. I guess it works pretty well." she explained.
Goodwitch and Ozpin looked at each other with surprise. The fact that they had a student talking about going supersonic like it was a pastime simply floored them. "Ahm, well Miss. Rose," it was Goodwitch to break the silence, having recovered the fastest. "Thank you for the explanation. Now, what was it that you wanted to discuss?"
"Ah yes, it's about the two ruins we were at today, where the relics were and where we fought the two large Grimm." Ruby said. "What about them?" asked Ozpin. "It would be easier to show you. Do you still have any camera drones out there?" was Ruby's reply. Tapping a few times on her scroll, Prof. Goodwitch brought up the live view of said camera. The drone was near the ruins where relics were.
"OK, as I was falling from the Nevermore, I saw another building just east of the main one that looked more intact than the other ones." Ruby said. As she said that, the drone moved east of the ruins bringing up the circular building Ruby was talking about. Inside they could see the bird man statue. "That is a Chozo statue. The alien race that raised me." Ruby looked at the two professors, who were in varying degrees of interest. "Not only is it strange that it is here, I also found another one at the ruins we fought at. If memory serves right, those statues may mark the location of Chozo temples."
This raised some eyebrows. "Miss. Rose, are you saying that there are alien temples hiding right under our noses? Do you know how long they have been there?" asked Ozpin. "Yes sir. As for how long, I am not sure. They could have built it up to 10 years ago, when they first found me, or, though very unlikely, much longer ago, before humans and faunus even existed."
"Hmm, and what is it that you want to do with these temples?" ask Ozpin. Ruby looked him dead in the eye. "I wish to have exclusive access to them, no one goes in without my say so. There may be tech that will help advance your society, but to even get it is dangerous and in the wrong hands, it could spell disaster and the loss of many lives." There was a long pause as the professors thought this over. Finally Ozpin said, "Very well." Goodwitch whipped her head towards the Head master. "You can't be serious! She is just a student! The youngest one even! She may think she knows what they are, but how can you trust her with something like this?"
Turning to her, Ozpin explained. "Ruby Rose here has experience with these temples while no one else on the planet does. She is the most capable in dealing with them, more capable than the strongest huntsmen and huntresses. We must trust her with this. I am also sure that she wants to keep such knowledge under wraps." Turning back to Ruby. "I am giving you full authority over those temples along with any near Beacon or Vale that you find. I can't say anything about the other continents. I will also keep those near Beacon under surveillance." Ruby smiled, "Thank you sir. If that is all, I shall take my leave." With that Ruby left, heading to her team dorm. Ozpin looked at Goodwitch, "Well Glynda, I do believe we have gained ourselves a very useful asset." The deputy headmistress frowned at this. "I just wish it was not Summer's 15 year old daughter." she said bitterly.
When Ruby reached the RWBY and JNPR common room, she was prepared to be bombarded by questions from her team, but not JNPR. "WHAT YOU DID WAS SO AWESOME, YOU WERE LIKE ZOOM, WOUSH, SLAM!" came the hyperactive Nora. "You never told me you could do that!" was Yang. "How did you do that?! You drilled right through the Nevermore!" and similar questions came from Pyrrha, Jaune, and Blake. Ren was the only one not saying anything, trying to hold back Nora. Weiss was a bit more confrontational. "What was that? What you did should be impossible, that was no semblance and I am sure there was no Dust involved!" She yelled getting in Ruby's face.
"Alright, Alright! Calm down NOW!" Ruby yelled over the ruckus. "If everyone will calm down I will explain! Just shut up and sit down, this will take some explaining." she said facepalming. "Damn it, this is going to be difficult to not tell them too much. Don't want to shatter their world more than the moon… Wait, I can just build on what I told Blake. That will make it so there are no inconsistencies."
Everyone was sitting on the couch or armchairs next to it. Ruby took a kitchen chair and sat in front of everyone. "Alright, let's start this from the beginning." She started. "My name is Ruby Samus Rose. 10 years ago, when I was 5, I disappeared after an incident, presumed dead, leaving behind my father and sister." Ruby indicated to Yang. "Yang Xiao Long is my older half sister." everyone's eyes but Blake and Yang widened at this. "As you can see, I am not dead!" Ruby announced, holding her arms out to either side. "I already told Blake a bit of this, but I was rescued by a group of people and brought to where they lived to heal and learn to defend myself. The place lived was secluded and separated from Remnant. However that does not mean it had primitive technology. It was actually how advanced the technology was that they chose to stay away."
This caught everyone by surprise. This group of people had advanced technology, but chose to keep it to themselves? Weiss spoke up, "Why would they do that, they could have saved lives!" Ruby sighed. "Yes they could have saved a few. However it would have killed more as well as endangered themselves. What do you think would have happened if your father learned that they had more advanced technology than them? He would have found some way to eliminate them, taking the tech for himself." Weiss looked outraged by the accusation, but Ruby continued before she could retort. "What would have happened if an extremist group such as the violent version of the White Fang we have today got their hands on the tech? Thousands of innocent people would die, both human and faunus. " Ruby looked straight at Blake when she said this, the monochrome girl stiffening.
"It was the safest option for everyone. Besides, these people were very altruistic and helped from the shadows, so they did not abandon everyone. They saved me afterall." Ruby said with a smile, "They would welcome people of almost all walks of life no matter the race, only denying those who truly sought to only hurt others." This brought out a few smiles, Pyrrha said "It is nice to hear that there are people like that out there. The place you were raised sounds like it would be a nice place to visit." Both Blake and Ruby cringed, "I actually said the same thing, before I learned what happened to the place." Blake said, earning a few confused looks that soon morphed into horrified realization. "Yes, the place is gone now. Completely destroyed." Ruby said, fighting to hold back tears. "It wasn't even Grimm! We would not have a problem dealing with them. We were attacked by pirates looking to steal the tech for their own." Ruby could not hold it anymore, she had suppressed these feelings for a long time, having focused on fighting the Space Pirates tooth and nail. She openly cried, "If I had been stronger, stayed and fought, maybe they would not have all died. Instead they died to protect me, sending me away."
Ruby froze when a pair of arms enveloped her. Looking up she saw Yang holding her, looking at Ruby with a warmth that only a sister could provide. "It's OK, Ruby let it out." she said and Ruby latched onto her sister, sobbing into her shoulder while the others waited patiently. About 5 minutes later, Ruby was composed enough to continue the conversation. "I am sorry about that. I have not had time to mourn." It was Jaune that spoke this time, "It's fine Ruby, I am sure we all understand. Even if not all of us have lost something or someone close to us." Ruby looked at the others, noting their expressions. Jaune, Pyrrha, and surprisingly Weiss had looks of empathy. Everyone else, though, had different expressions. Ren and and Nora looked at eachother, understanding far too well what it was like to lose a home. Yang looked down for obvious reasons. Blake on the other hand had a look of conflict. She understood Ruby's emotions, but something did not sit right with her.
"Be that as it may." Ren said, breaking through the depressive atmosphere the room had gained, "That still does not explain what you did against the Nevermore." Ruby was thankful for the change of topic. "Oh, sorry. Got sidetracked there." she replied, shaking herself mentally. "What I did was a combination of two things developed by the people who raised me. The first one, rocketing up at sonic speeds, is called a Shine Spark. Usually, it requires more equipment as it normally is Supersonic and needs a particular speed to charge. What I did was a milder version. Simply put, thrusters are charged using kinetic energy while running quickly and I mean REALLY quickly. I was barely able to reach that threshold. Once charged, the user stops moving and has a few moments before the charge dissipates. If they choose to, one can then expel the energy in an explosive way… resulting in something similar to what you saw."
Everyone just looked at her in complete shock. That was not even the true, fully powered thing?! "I am almost afraid to ask, but what was the second thing you did?" asked Blake. "That is something I can do with the gear I have now." Ruby said. "The second thing was when I started spinning head over heels, slicing through the terrible excuse for a bird. It is called Screw Attack." Ruby lifted her right foot, showing her boots. "When I start spinning, a module in my boots activates. When they do, I am surrounded by plasma." This just made them confused again. "What the Dust is plasma?" asked Weiss "I'm actually surprised you don't know Weiss, seeing as your family runs a large industrial and technological company. Simply put, it is superheated gas, to the point that it is pretty much pure energy. Lightning actually is a form of plasma." Ruby explained.
A look of fear came over Yang, "Are you sure that is safe?" she asked worriedly. Ruby smiled, "Don't worry, with the combination of me spinning and electromagnets, the plasma does not hurt me." she reassured. Ruby then looked at the time. "It's getting late and we have class at 9 in the morning. We should head to bed." Everyone agreed and the two teams went to their rooms.
When Ruby entered, she immediately saw a problem. "No one has unpacked yet, have they?" she asked. The looks on her teammates' faces answered her. "Don't worry, that is actually a good thing. I can already tell that the room will be too cramped with beds like this." She took out her scroll and sent a message. "I am requesting bunks for us so we have more room. We should have them by tomorrow evening. Then we can fully unpack." This caught the others off guard again. Ruby was acting really mature for her age. Finally they climbed into bed and went to sleep after that long day.
AN: Hey everyone! I hope you all enjoyed this chapter. Looks like one true immortal is getting along well with a proverbial immortal. What will happen when the Grimm Witch of the West (get the reference?) sides with the undying draconic pain in the ass?
I want to give a shout out to EvanderAdvent for the Shine Spark idea. That however will likely be a one time thing as the conditions that need to be met are far too difficult and dangerous to meet. In the future, she will need her power suit.
If you have not already guessed, Chozo temples = Boss battles = upgrades. What will Ruby find? That's for me to know and you to find out. Feel free to give suggestions though.
I have decided on Melee weapons for Ruby. They will be revealed in the story. Understand that I took all suggestions into consideration.
I have chosen the pairings for RWBY and JNPR. Hint: "Partners" More shall be revealed in the story.
I have an idea for the RWBY and JNPR upgrades, but I want to hear more from everyone else first before I reveal it. Please continue to send suggestions.
I am going to make Ruby's relationship with Adam (the AI) father and daughter. Ruby never really had a father growing up and Adam has been looking after her, so I see this working well.
Time for some Review Responses:
HaloEmblem:
I feel like I shouldn't have started reading this, Not because it's not good(This story so for is Amazing! and I wish you the best of luck and hoping that you bring in a lot of readers) but because now I'm gonna focus on reading this instead of working of the fic I'm working on now, also Ruby X Weiss all the way
Thanks for the compliment! I wish you luck on your own story, too. I read your teaser and it sounds very interesting. I hope all turns out well.
firewyrm2:
Definitely on Team JNPR, and I think the intention in Volumes 1 and 4 is Blake x Sun. As for Weiss and Yang, I don't know, maybe they could get together, but not everyone needs to have a pairing. Of course it's your choice in the end and I have chosen to follow on this adventure wherever it may lead (within reason and what my sanity can take). On a side note, I think Ruby being confused at small logic defying moments in the series would make a good reoccurring joke (as an example, Ruby spending a few minutes trying to figure out how Zwei, all that dog food, and a can opener can fit in such a small package), especially if nobody else questions them.
Something else I forgot to mention, I would like to see Sylux appear as a major antagonist. Metroid Prime 4 is probably still years away and he appears to be allied with the Space Pirates, so he would make for a potential foil to Rubyplus he could somewhat blend in with his stolen Federation armor). Hope this doesn't come off as asking for too much, I tend to have a lot of ideas but don't enjoy the execution phase.
Thanks for the suggestion! I have decided on the pairings, so we will see how things turn out. I agree with you about the bizarre incidents. Ruby may have seen crazy things, but they, for the most part, follow the laws of physics or are caused by advanced technology.
I personally have not played all of the metroid games, but after doing the research, I may consider adding Sylux. He does seem to have a grudge against Samus based on the lore. I can relate to having a head full of ideas. This is my first time actually putting one in writing. I wish you the best of luck if you chose to take up writing.

Bastard just WON'T DIE. and now the draconic SOB is probably gonna be bff's with Salem and she would probably like the undying space dactyl
The stupid lizard just doesn't know how to stay dead, am I right. I can say for certain that we won't need to worry about RB-X (SA-X) or Dark Ruby (Dark Samus). I am NOT dealing with the fiasco that would cause… I hope.
EvanderAdvent
I think you should hold off on the Power Suit, wait until something really big or if Ruby wants to go incognito. I do think a cool idea is if she's still gonna drag the Giant Nevermore up the cliff that she Shinesparks up there.
Does Ruby still have her Metroid power to absorb energy or is that currently dormant? For pairings I'll admit I'm a sucker for basic White Rose and Bumblebee. It's your story though so do as you please.
For melee weapons I think after initiation Ruby should build herself a dedicated melee weapon. Whether she make a scythe or not I don't know but I see Ruby getting excited to build a Remnant-style weapon.
What do you think of bringing back a few pieces of gear from the older games. My brain immediately goes to the Prime games and their various visors. What about the beams from Prime 2, would the Light Beam be super effective against Grimm?
Thanks again for the suggestion about the suit and Shine Spark, I think it turned out really well.
As for the metroid power, yes she does. If you look back at chapter 3 in my Author's Notes, you will find the stats of what Ruby can do in each of her suits. I will be updating it soon though. I think you will like the pairings.
I will say that she will get something like a mechashift weapon, not what or how though.
I like the idea of the older gear, where do you think I got the temples from? Truly I really appreciate your suggestions.
RadBman21:
It may be a bit too early to introduce the power suit. Too many witnesses if she wants to keep her secrets from the other students who most likely won't keep quiet.
Yah, I can see that. Thanks for the tip!
HaloEmblem:
I agree that the power suit shouldn't be used during initiation, how ever if some pirates attacked during the initiation then yes the power suit shall be used to defend herself and anyone around her, also Whiterose and bumblebee for Rwby ships, (again good luck with this story, now I just need to focus on mine)
I had considered having something like that happen, but it would be too soon for the pirates to attack yet. I wonder what ships won, (Wink, wink)

So far looking good. I would suggest a melee weapon but honestly I dunno if Ruby can do her version of her Scythe/Sniper rifle. Pretty sure you have an idea of a melee weapon for Ruby Samus.
Glad you like it and yah, Ruby never trained with a scythe here and she can't use two hands when in her power suit. However, maybe she learned something else. :)

Very well done! A little short, but the dialogue more than makes up for it. Everyone is very in character. (Well I mean, Ruby is as in-character as she can, being raised as Samus and all) I only hope that this story doesn't fall into the trap that most crossovers do, being "Series feat. Other Series." I hope you can find a good balance of RWBY and Metroid instead of a RWBY story with Metroid elements here and there. As for your pairing question? Nah. Metroid never needed romance before, don't think it needs it now. (Although the JNPR pairings are very helpful for their character arcs so I wouldn't mind them kept) Excited to see where this goes!
I am glad that the story is working out well. Thanks for the warning. I will try to keep it balanced, hence adding in the temples to bring in the dungeon crawling aspect of Metroid. Thanks for the suggestion with the pairings, but I plan on using them, sorry. I hope you will still enjoy the story, as I am using the ships to add social interaction and not go from conflict to conflict with little in between. You are right about there not being any romance in Metroid, but in Other M (even though it could be considered as having messed up the timeline) Samus does seem to care a lot about Adam. Food for thought and maybe a theory.
Now for questions from me:
What non Pirate Metroid boss should Ruby face first? Think back to any of the games.
What Pirate Metroid boss should Ruby face first? Think back to any of the games.
Upgrade suggestions for team RWBY and JNPR.
Thank you everyone for the support. I am glad that everyone is enjoying it as much as I enjoy writing it.
As usual, feel free to ask questions and give suggestions.
Till next time.
