Chapter 3: Meeting Once Again?

Damian, dressed as a peasant, stood in the middle of a forest. His horse was tied to a tree while he patiently awaited someone.

It's going to be dusk soon, and he's becoming impatient.

He's waiting for a man who will provide him with crucial evidence that his brother is indeed alive on the other side of the world.

Damian had been working as the prince's informant. But unknown to this spy, Damian would be getting the evidence firsthand. He couldn't wait for his hands to have it.

It had been months of investigation for him, trying to build trustworthy connections while maintaining his true identity a secret. It was hard, but he persevered. He needed his brother, Prince Demetrius Desmond, the true heir to the Kingdom of Ostania, back here, regardless of how strained their relationship had become.

If that pleases the king, then so be it; if that prevents the king from declaring war against a rival kingdom, then so be it; and if it ensures continued peace among the kingdoms, then so be it.

Damian will bring his brother back.

He had been working with this informant for a while now in the shadows. They didn't meet up face to face, but managed to understand the messages being shared or the meeting places so they could exchange confidential information. This one, though, was extra mysterious and would barely ask anything back from Damian and preferred to relay information rather than receive it.

Damian stood leaning against the tree, his arms crossed over his chest as he closed his eyes and quietly listened to nature.

The gentle sound of the river flowing, the chirping of the birds perched on the trees, the leaves rustled in the breeze, a distant brook trickled gently...and a sound of crackling twigs accompanied by a woman's shrieks?

"Oh my, this is bad!!"

The voice was getting closer as Damian opened his hazel eyes to find this pink-haired lady approaching his direction, trying to get rid of the branches in her way. She didn't see him too.

"Stupid me taking this 'shortcut' when it's clearly not. Now, not only am I late for dinner, but I'm also lost!" she exclaimed out loud, continuing with her monologue.

Giving up, she looked up and was immediately faced with the unimpressed and annoyed expression of the guy she had met earlier in town.

She exclaimed in much relief, "Damian!"

Damian winced at her calling him that. Did she know him? Was he exposed?

"Prince Damian," she corrected, giggling and mocking. She reached the gap between them as she glanced at his horse. "Hi, Horsey."

No, the girl doesn't know. She's just being annoying.

His horse neighed as if returning the unwelcome guest's greeting.

"What are you doing here, thief?" she asked, her large emerald eyes captivating him as they wondered into his soul if he continued staring.

But he's too annoyed right now.

'You gotta be kidding me.'

This woman showed up in the wrong place at the wrong time.

Crack

He heard another crackling sound of twigs before he could name what it was. He was quick to shove the girl out of the way before an arrow flew past them and lodged itself in the tree behind them.

"Ugh!" exclaimed the pink-haired woman as she landed on her butt on the ground. "What's that for?" she demanded angrily.

Damian ignored her as he glared in the direction the arrow had shot from. Was it really necessary?

Groaning, he walked to the tree and gingerly picked up the small parchment roll pinned by the arrowhead. A small note attached read,

To the royal second prince.

Twilight

Damian took them down and put them inside his pocket.

"And here I thought you might act like a prince and help me out after shoving me," the pink-haired woman grumbled, complaining. "Damian! Help me up!" she exclaimed, irritated.

Damian sighed as he walked over to her and helped her up. As if she really needed that. "What's your name again?" he asked.

He would call her shrimp because of her pink hair but then it's probably not the best timing seeing how she's already pissed off at him right now.

She huffed as her cheeks reddened in annoyance. "Anya! A-N-Y-A. I already told you that!"

He dismissed her with his hand. "Okay, okay, Anya. I already helped you up. Can I go now?" He was being sarcastic, of course.

Anya squinted her eyes at him as she glanced to his horse. "No," she said. "I'm lost."

As if he cared.

"Start going back the way you came from then, my lady," he said nonchalantly as he strode towards his horse, which seemed to be glaring at him.

What?

"You're not only a thief, a brute, but also a heartless being!" she whined, her foot stomping on the ground. "And you call yourself a prince? A real prince would have you beheaded for impersonating him and not living up to his image."

Damian was truly getting a headache from this girl's penchant for long talks.

She continued to slander his name too, though unknowingly.

Can this chance meetup end now?

"Okay, fine!" he said in frustration. "I'll take you home." He climbed onto his horse and offered his hand to her. "Hurry up and hop on!" he said, still obviously annoyed, of course.

Anya looked at his hand, then to the horse, and finally to his face.

He asked in annoyance, "What?"

She looked hesitant. "I haven't ridden a horse before," she said, meekly.

Jesus Christ.

He groaned and climbed down, helping her up to the horse. The son-of-a-mane actually lowered his body so it was easier for the annoying girl to sit down. He then climbed back up next to her.

He instructed, "Hold on tight," though he didn't feel her hands. Rolling his eyes, he reached for her hands behind and enveloped them around his waist. The girl gasped at their close contact.

He then gently kicked the horse as it slowly strolled away.

He asked, "Which way is your house?"

"I don't know." She answered.

Damian sighed, "Stupid."

The girl hit him on the back. "Hey! That's not nice. I already told you I'm lost."

Damian simply rolled his eyes and said, "Whatever."
