Regina appeared in the foyer. Slowly, she stepped out of her heels, picked them up, and walked up the steps. Her shoulders slumped and her feet dragged as she felt her heart sinking. Her hair was still damp and curling. When she reached her room, she changed into her coziest pair of pajamas and sank down onto her bed. As soon as she sat down, she started sobbing. The magical night she'd had with Emma played through her mind and she felt paralyzed by the fear of never feeling that again. She knew she should probably wait until morning to speak with Henry, but she knew she wouldn't sleep until she had some answers. Regina took a few deep breaths and wiped her face in an effort to pull herself together. She hesitantly walked across the hallway and knocked on her son's door.
"Henry?" Her voice wavered as she cracked the door open.
Henry had still been awake reading a comic book by the light of his table lamp. "Mom?"
Regina slowly opened the door and walked to the end of his bed. She looked so vulnerable standing there, and it worried him. "What's wrong?"
"I need to talk to you," she said as she sat on the side of his bed. He sat up and put his comic aside, giving her his full attention.
"Emma and I went on a date tonight," she began, watching his reaction.
Henry didn't react at all. Regina sighed heavily. "Henry, did you know? I need you to tell me the truth."
Henry nodded. Regina's eyes welled up with tears as her concern grew. "Henry, how long have you known, and did you…do something to make this happen?"
Henry closed his eyes and sighed. "I didn't do anything but nudge you in the right direction. Grandma said-
Regina scoffed. "Snow!? Snow White knows?" Her voice was edgy.
Henry grabbed her shoulder, demanding her attention. "Yes, I told her. We called it Operation Swan Queen."
Tears spilled down Regina's cheeks as she took in the name he'd given them. Her heart felt like it was breaking in two. Henry held her hand tightly. "Mom, I promise we didn't do anything. Snow said we couldn't do more than give you a gentle nudge to help you see it for yourselves or it would blow up in our faces."
Regina considered this information and calmed down. Eventually she laughed a little in surprise. "Looks like she finally figured out how to keep a secret."
Henry ignored her shot at Snow. "All I did was tell you I thought mom had feelings for someone and get you to stop fighting."
Regina looked at him carefully and knew he was telling her the truth. She sighed, somewhat relieved, but still forlorn. "Oh, Henry…we figured out you must have known about this. Emma panicked, thinking this was all some sort of spell or something. Now, I think she's having doubts."
"Let me talk to her. I'll tell her I had nothing to do with it!"
Regina smiled sadly and kissed his forehead. "Let's try tomorrow. We could all use some sleep. Hopefully, she won't shut us all out again."
Henry hugged his mother tightly. "Don't worry, Mom. Everything is going to be ok. You guys were meant to be together."
Regina held him close for a long moment before she kissed him goodnight. "I love you, Henry."
"I love you too, Mom."
Not one of them got any sleep that night. Regina was slumped over her coffee at the kitchen counter the next morning when Henry came downstairs. Her eyes were red from crying and little rest. Henry kissed her forehead. She smiled weakly at him.
"Morning, sweetie. Do you want me to make you breakfast?" Her voice was soft and rough.
"Let me make you breakfast, Mom."
She smiled at him. "Oh, Henry…thank you, but I'm not hungry."
Henry looked at her concerned. "Mom, you have to eat something. After breakfast, I'm going to fix things with Emma."
Regina shifted, unsettled. "Henry, maybe we should just let Emma come to us."
Henry shot that famous stubborn look at her that she knew ran in his genes. "What do you want for breakfast?"
Regina sighed and rolled her eyes. "Fine. Just yogurt and toast."
Henry nodded dutifully and made their breakfast. Once they'd finished, he cleaned up everything without a word. Regina watched him as he gathered his things. "All right, I'm going to finish Operation Swan Queen. When I get back, I'm bringing mom home with me."
Regina smiled sadly once more as she got up to hug him goodbye. "Good luck, Henry."
When he left, Regina poured herself another cup of coffee and sat on the porch swing outside. Henry immediately called Snow and told her what had happened. She, of course, agreed to help and insisted he meet her at Granny's before going to see Emma. From there, they drove together to Emma's house. When Emma answered the door, she didn't seem surprised to see her son.
"Henry…" she said flatly. Upon seeing her mother, she frowned. "You told my mother?!"
"Emma!" Snow was shocked and hurt by her tone.
"How many people knew this was going on before I did?"
Snow rolled her eyes, fed up with her tone. "All right, everyone get inside." She ushered them from the porch to sit at the kitchen table. Snow stood at the end of the table, ready to serve as moderator.
"Emma, Henry just noticed what was right in front of everyone's faces. He's perceptive. He wanted to help the two of you be happy again, so he asked for my help. I told him all we could do is help you see it for yourself. All he did was make you start talking to each other again and suggest to Regina that you had feelings for someone. She apparently figured out the rest."
"How could you possibly have known I had feelings for your mother before I did," Emma asked him.
Henry looked at Snow questioningly. Emma caught the look they shared. "What? Someone tell me what you're keeping from me."
Henry sighed and grabbed his bag. "I was upset after the funerals, and I kept thinking about how much I wanted the two of you to be happy again. When I woke up the next morning, I found these…" he pulled out the pages connecting the lines between Emma and Regina.
Emma glanced through them and saw an illustration of the two of them holding hands. She looked up at Henry with an expression he hadn't seen since she was the Dark One. "Henry, did you use your author powers?"
"I don't remember doing this," he told her confidently, willing her to use her superpower.
"Henry, you can't just parent trap us together to make us feel better," she yelled.
He smacked his hands against the table and stood up. "I didn't do this!"
"Henry," Regina yelled, stunned. She had decided to meet Henry, not wanting to leave him to shoulder this burden alone. Seeing the two of them yelling at each other broke her heart. She was glad she decided to follow him.
Emma held up the pages he'd given her. "Do you know about this," she asked her.
Regina stepped towards her and took the pages. She gasped as she looked through them. Emma, without patience, started again. "He wrote some pages and then pulled my mother into this. It's been a whole operation."
Henry stepped forward. "That's right. We called it Operation Swan Queen," he said defiantly.
Emma scoffed. "You named it!? You can't do this! You can't toy with us!"
"Emma, stop it!" Regina yelled at her sharply.
Emma sank down into her seat at the table in defeat. Regina sighed. "Snow, take Henry somewhere. I need to talk to your daughter."
Snow nodded and followed Henry as he gathered his things. She patted Regina's shoulder encouragingly as she walked out. Regina smiled weakly at her. With a sigh, she sat at the table next to Emma. She looked long and hard at her for a good minute before she turned to set the pages on the table.
"Emma, what's all this about? You know damn well this isn't Henry's doing. I can't believe you would even accuse him of abusing his powers after everything he's been through," she said deeply hurt.
Emma put her head in her hands and sighed. "God dammit…" she mumbled.
Regina looked through the pages again. "Emma, have you even read what's written here?"
Emma sighed and sat back in her seat. "No."
Regina rolled her eyes and shook her head. "Maybe we should read them before we go off the deep end."
Emma watched as she read the first page. She watched her face carefully and noted every tiny response. As soon as she was finished, she set it aside to move to the next one. Emma slowly picked it up to read what was there. It had begun with the grief the two of them shared over the loss of Hook and Robin. It detailed the feelings that had run through each of them when Emma sacrificed herself to save Regina from the darkness, and how Emma had thought of that moment at Robin's funeral. It had recorded when she'd asked Snow to give her a moment alone to say goodbye to Robin. As Regina read through it, she put her hand to her mouth. Emma stood by Robin's grave consumed with guilt. When everyone was out of earshot, she spoke to him.
"I'm so sorry, Robin. All of this is my fault. If you and Regina hadn't followed me to Hell, you'd still be here. Regina would still be happy." Emma began to tremble in the cold rain as tears fell down her cheeks.
"I'll never be able to thank you for saving her," she sobbed.
"I wouldn't have been able to handle losing Hook and the mother of my son. He's already lost his dad. I'm so sorry your kids lost you. I promise I'll do everything I can to help Regina take care of them. I promise I'll do anything to keep her safe and make her happy again. I promise I'll help her find her happy ending. I won't let you die in vain."
Regina handed Emma the page as she cried. Emma looked at her concerned as she read over what was there. When she'd finished, she was trembling. It was as if she'd lived that moment over again.
"Is that true," Regina asked as her voice trembled. "Did you…say that?"
Emme looked at her with tears in her eyes. "Yes."
Regina leaned forward, grabbing her face, and pressed a kiss to her lips. Emma gasped with relief at the contact. Regina pushed her hair from her face and held her gaze. "Emma, Henry did what he was supposed to do. His powers recorded. You know as well as I do that all of what's between us has been here long before these pages showed up."
Emma's lip quivered as she fought back tears, nodding her head. "Regina, Robin was written for you too and he died. Hook and I were true loves and he died. Neal and Daniel are dead. I can't lose you too."
Regina sighed, "Emma, you beautiful idiot…we all die! Unless you decide to become the Dark One again, which I WILL NOT allow," she threatened, "we're all going to die. I'm not going to waste my life sitting here waiting for it to happen. Yes, I lost Daniel and Robin. I had even less time with Daniel, and his loss turned me into the Evil Queen! I would still do all of it over again, suffer all that grief, to know his love. I would do the same for Robin. I walked away from love once, and I regretted it. I will never make that mistake again. If we walk away from this, their deaths will be in vain."
Emma fell into her arms, holding her close as she cried. "I'm so sorry! I'm just so scared. I don't want to lose you."
Regina pressed gentle kisses to her cheek. "Emma, you're not going to lose me. I love you. Together, we can get through anything. I just need you to believe in us."
Emma looked her in the eye. "I promise I believe. I love you, Regina."
They kissed each other deeply before wiping the tears from their faces. "I need to apologize to Henry," Emma said.
Regina took her hand and smiled. "I'll call Snow."
When Henry and Snow returned to the house, Regina sent Henry to the kitchen to talk to Emma. Snow and Regina sat together on the couch.
"So…I haven't had a chance to ask you how you feel about all of this," Regina said as she shifted awkwardly.
Snow smiled at her and took her hand. "Regina, I couldn't be happier for both of you. I know how deeply you love and how much you fight for your family. I've always wanted to see you happy. I know how much Emma loves you. You both deserve this. You deserve each other."
Regina's eye watered. "I…thank you, Snow."
They hugged each other until they heard Emma and Henry enter the room. Snow looked at Emma. "Can we tell your father now? He's not as sharp as the rest of us and I'm REALLY tired of keeping this secret from him. Just don't tell him I said that."
Emma looked at Regina as they all laughed. Regina shrugged. "I'd say it's time to reward you for keeping a secret this long."
Snow rolled her eyes before she smiled excitedly. "Let's meet at Granny's for dinner!"
They all looked to Emma for confirmation. "Sounds good to me," she said walking over to wrap her arm around Regina's shoulder.
