Gwen Flacca had been busy the last few days. This damn fleet being made up of 5 different organizations just makes things a mess. She being BuPers also means that figuring out these things are her responsibility. Take their fleet Commander. LT Commander Valdez is a CSB "spook" who was passable at ship issues (her XO did most of the day to day issues running the Apis.) Commander Valdez's real rank is whatever the CSB equivalent of LT Commander or Colonel. That doesn't really matter but it had taken Colonel Gabrielle saying "promote up your officers or demote me". Gabrielle was now second due to seniority after his brevet rank was made permanent Atwood was now LT Commander of the Shaitan Then Major Lewis of the Lamia was promoted to LT Colonel (a rank usually not used for such sized ships) to give him seniority over the Majors in Command of the Vigilant and Aphid. There had been other promotions filling in various gaps. Captain Dammers was now Major Dammers. LT Berkins was now Captain Berkins and Ensign Rakesh was now LT JG Rakesh. Also Ensign Rogers was now LT JG Rogers and assigned officially under Flacca's staff. LT JG Rogers was probably never going to be "Command" material but again neither was Flacca but someone needs to keep things in order. Lastly LT Flacca was now Captain Flacca.

The people being added to "Gabe's Flotilla" (as everyone except the Colonel called it to his annoyance) still needed some fine tuning . "LT run me over the people we are adding to see if we can move any of them around." Captain Flacca had been going over these reports for days but sometimes having someone else talk out loud about made the answer more obvious.

"Yes sir" said LT Rogers. "Captain we currently have 75 people allotted to come join the Orion."

LT JG Ray "Kite" Travis ECO Ensign Evan "Rascal" Burrow

"Gods damn it Kite get your head out of your ass" said LT Samantha "Cartwheel" Taylor. "If you can't spot the Toasters in time we are going to kick your worthless butt down to deckhand" she said. "Kite" and "Rascal" were the new Raptor crew assigned to the Battlestar Freya. The two nuggets were going to be the "eyes" of one of the Viper squadrons from the Freya in next week's wargames and none of the Raptor pilots wanted to listen to Viper jocks bitch about how they had to deal with a nugget "busdriver". That is why she had them out here out of dradis range of the Freya. The moons of Ophion aren't large but there are more than a dozen of them. A good place to train as there is frak all out here.

"Sir we just got a priority alert. The Cylons have launched an attack on the Colonies" said LT Jake "Blaze" Kalar.

"Frak. Kite we are jumping to the Freya" said LT Taylor.

The Freya appeared to have been destroyed before it was able to launch it's Vipers other than the standard CAP. There were what had to be Cylon Raiders searching the Freya's wreckage possibly for any Vipers or Raptors that managed to escape. The pair of Raptors after seeing the Cylons notice them (and realizing they were essentially unarmed) jumped to the main Colonial Fleet Base outside Scorpia and then Sagittaron and finally Libran. All had been destroyed with heavy Cylon presence. They then jumped to a small civilian refueling depot as they were running very low on tyleum.

"Sir I am picking up ships." said her ECO. "They check out as civilians." There were a total of 7 FTL capable civilian ships. It took a while to calm them down and explain that it is very likely the Cylons would be here as this refueling spot was not a secret and an obvious target. After getting the civilians to listen Taylor decided to jump back to Ophion.

"Sir I think I just picked up a flash of ships jumping in" said LT Jake "Blaze" Kalar. "It looks like a Gunstar and an Escortstar."

"Approach them but cautiously" said LT Taylor. "Kite you keep an eye on the civies." After hearing LT JG Travis acknowledgement they jumped to the two friendlies. "Colonial ships this is Raptor 11851."

The Gunstar Shaitan and Escortstar Aphid reported that they had been ordered here to the Helios Gamma emergency rendezvous spot. Taylor didn't want to think about how they had almost missed getting help. The Shaitan's dradis was currently not working due to something the Cylons had done and the Aphid was ordered to keep watch. What to do next would be difficult to decide. The reports had came in that President Adar had attempted to surrender but the Cylons had refused. No the Cylons had ignored the offer. Not a single demand or anything had came from the Cylons other than more nuclear missiles.

A few hours later a new message came across all channels. The new President was named Roslin (apparently the former Secretary of Education) and had announced "Case Orange" and that all Colonial, SDF, and reserve ships were to lead any civilians to safety outside the Cyrannus System. She did not give any orders outside that due to not having any ideas what lies ahead other than to "take care of the people."

The Shaitan's CO then ordered the two Raptors to land in his shuttle bay and the 9 ships to jump to a system 9.7 lightyears out. 24 hours after the message to lead civilians out of the Cyrannus Sector (to the second) a secret file was unlocked in the Shaitan's computer system. The Shaitan's CO (and pretty much everyone) was suspicious of these orders after the hacking by the Cylons but the orders said for all Colonial Navy ships to meet at coordinates in the Omega Sector. So Mama Taylor's favorite daughter was being sent out to check.

"Blaze let me know the second you see anything" said LT Taylor. Thinking this could be a trap the Raptor had jumped "above" and almost 20 light seconds from the rendezvous spot. "Kite" was staying here to report if things go wrong.

"Yes sir. I am picking up a Warstar" said LT Kalar. "She's taken a beating that's for sure."

They jumped their Raptor close in. There wasn't just a Warstar (that Taylor was amazed was operational she must have taken a dozen nukes) but there was also an Osiris class Battlestar. That model was retired after the War (well First War) as being expensive and widely considered one of the worst ships to serve on and the ship barely appeared on her dradis even at this short range.

"The Raptor pilots seem solid. They brought some of their ground crew from the Shaitan and should be able to keep their Raptors effective" said Captain Flacca. Bigger issues could be fixed by either the Sarek or Apis. Anything much more than refueling or rearming the Raptors would be something the Orion would be unable to deal with anyway. "What about our ground pounders" asked Captain Dammers.

Captain Linda Perkins thought again for probably the 1000th time in her career how much she hated some of the Articles of Colonization. She was a Captain of the 231st Tauron "Nix's Ravens" (Company D) a distinguished and venerable regiment. Being over 200 years old and serving with honors in various wars between the other Colonies and of course the Cylons. Tauron had not wanted to give up it's valuable asteroid bases (with the taxes they gained from them) but due to the Articles SDFs were not allowed to have Marines and during the Cylon War the Ravens had specialized in asteroid combat that over time had moved to being little more than a glorified security force. At least there they could still do their asteroid assault training (something completely impossible on Tauron). However due to the moronic "Space Parades" taking place today they had to take one of the government owned (and somehow even less comfortable) "transport" (more like a pressurized cargo ship) to their upcoming new six month assignment rather than a real military transport.

Why this sucked us that while the Rockhopper was FTL capable it was going there the slow way. This was due to avoiding the wear and tear (and assorted costs) that FTL jumps did and the slight chance of an accident. They were over 3 hours out from Tauron and 4 hours from the asteroid W26-158 "Phillip's Turnip" which was one of the biggest trade hubs in the Erebus Belt.

"Captain Perkins to the bridge" she heard over the intercom system. Perkins could not guess what they needed her for as she could see all people were sleeping, playing cards, or the usual crap when bored. Still if one of her people had managed to do something stupid she was going to be pissed.

When she entered the small bridge the Captain (Fletcher if his name badge was correct) motioned for her to sit down and grab a headset. She put them on and heard "This is a priority flash message. The Cylons have attacked the Colonies. All civilian ships are to hold in place and await further orders."

"Frak. Captain Fletcher do you have any further information" she asked.

"The radio is pretty jumbled but we picked up confirmation of nuclear strikes on Hypatia and the other cities on Tauron" said Captain Fletcher.

They were outside the main communication areas so their information was limited to speed of light. That meant that whatever had happened took place over 2 minutes ago. If the Cylons hit the other planets in Helios Alpha they would get confirmation in 7 more minutes from Caprica and Gemenon and 11 from Picon.

"Captain Fletcher we will wait to hear what happened at the Twins. If Caprica is not yet under attack we will jump there" said Captain Perkins.

The news over the next 7 minutes did not improve though. There were reports of around 20 Fleet ships including 6 Battlestars just losing power. The Cylons hit all 4 planets and there were some fragmentary reports that the other Helios systems had been hit as well. Then the report that President Adar had attempted to surrender but the Cylons had refused to listen. "This isn't an attack. They are attempting to exterminate us" said Captain Fletcher.

"Do you think we should go to the Turnip" asked Captain Perkins. Fletcher had mentioned he had done a 4 year stint in the Navy before this job. She being a ground pounder and it being "his" ship Perkins wanted Fletcher's opinion.

"The Turnip will probably would also get hit as it had over 50,000 people there and it only had a single squadron of MK V Vipers there for protection" said Captain Fletcher and the Turnip was certainly known to the Cylons. "Still we might find a ship there." The Rockhopper would jump a pretty good distance away and check if there were any Cylons there. If it was safe they could then proceed.

The Turnip was a smoldering ruin. The Cylons had a dozen Raiders there. They had jumped away before the Raiders were able to get to them. Several other large bases both military and civilian in the Erebus Belt had shown the same thing. Captain Fletcher had suggested the Ouranos Belt due to the hope that the Virgon and Leonis SDFs might still be operational. This made sense or at least was a better idea than anything she had. They had picked up reports that whatever virus had left the Fleet largely inoperable the SDFs seemed much less effected. With Helios Alpha lost the most powerful fleets should be the Virgon's, Leonis', and Canceron's. And two of those three are here. Unfortunately also in Helios Beta is a lot of Cylons. Virgon and Leonis has been hit just as hard as the Helios Alpha planets and the radio reports from Gamma and Delta say the same.

The Ouranos Belt had just as much mining as the Erebus but less military bases due to the peace agreements after the centuries of fighting in the Imperial Wars. This might mean that help might be harder to find but hopefully the Cylons would have less priority targets to hit. "How about here" asked Captain Fletcher pointing to a stellar cartography chart. "Here" was the "Helios Beta Auxiliary Long Term Storage Depot" or what is referred to as a "Boneyard". This boneyard would not have any reserve military ships (they had been largely been consolidated to around Scorpia for "safety") but would be former supply ships. "I know it's dangerous but we are more likely to find a military ship here than anywhere I can guess that the Cylons wouldn't have hit already".

Being Army Captain Perkins didn't know exactly how many ships the Colonial Navy, various SDFs, and other military type of ships there had been but she knew it was over a thousand. 'How could the Cylons have knocked out our fleet in less than a day' she thought. "Captain Fletcher if you think we can meet up with someone let's do it but play it smart." Perkins wanted to land on a planet (preferably Tauron) and fight (almost certainly to their death) but the 6 planets they had information on had a lot of Raiders and Baseships around them. The Rockhopper was slow, unarmed, and had zero stealth. They would just be shot down before hitting the exosphere accomplishing nothing.

"Sir we have something on dradis. It appears to be an old Repairstar that is working on getting underway" said LT JG Fletcher. "Do you want to contact them."

LT JG Fletcher being Navy had been reupped by orders given over the radio by the Colonial military . Officially she was the highest ranking military or even government person aboard even if Fletcher ran the Rockhopper. Still a Tauron Captain even if Army though might get better results than a Lieutenant JG. With a quick head nod Fletcher picked up the headset and said "Colonial Repairstar this is Captain Perkins of the Tauron Army Transport ship Rockhopper."

"Rockhopper this is the Sarek. We could use your assistance" said the Repairstar. The Sarek gave landing directions to an empty bay. Currently ten of the dozen bays seemed to have a ship many of which appeared to be half disassembled.

Getting closer a couple things were noticeable. Not only was the Sarek unarmed she had her weapon hardpoints cut off and her advanced dradis system removed. It would require a fleet yard weeks or months to make it combat operational again and even when fully "combat" ready a Repairstar had been lightly armed (more to avoid some dinky Nemesis Corvette from being able to destroy it for free). Also the Sarek was not exactly run down but she was showing her age. They landed at the location with the blinking "dock here" indicator.

The person waiting for them introduced themselves. "I am Captain Jacob Newman."

Captain Newman had worked for Erato Shipping for over 30 years (the largest military ship building company in the Helios Beta system) and was in command of the Sarek. Most of the Sarek's duties had been taking apart or maintaining Cylon War ships that were small, old, and at best had a missile pod strapped on during the Cylon War that had been needed to keep the dozens of fleets and bases supplied. They had been designed to be produced quickly and cheaply (supplying water or something like concrete didn't require much) but had been military ships of a sort even if Perkins wasn't sure exactly what criteria the vacuum suckers used to justify the term "star" at the end of the ship types. Erato had made hundreds of such ships in the War and then spent the last 40 years slowly selling them off or parting them out.

"When the Cylons attacked we pulled off any work crews from the other ships. The Sarek hasn't used it's jump engines in 20 years and we needed to do some repairs. While we were fixing up our jump engines we grabbed some ships that were able to at least use their sublight engines" said Captain Newman. "We should be able to jump in about 1 hour."

There was some talk about what they would do next. Erato Shipping had some spots that could be possible rendezvous spots but that no one had come here was a sign that things were disorganized (at best) and with over 20 Billion dead most likely no one was "in charge" anymore.

"Sir we had an explosion on landing bay seven" said one of the officers. "It looks like the Cylons have landed there."

"Everyone get your ass down to landing bay seven and prepare to repel boarders" said Captain Perkins to her people. Newman was ordering his people to jump the Sarek anywhere else.

Sarek Landing Bay 7

Sgt. Riftin only had about 3 people with him. "The Captain is going to hit the Toasters soon and we are to keep any further Chrome Jobs from getting out of that shuttle."

Their amount of heavy weapons or rounds that could definitely pierce Cylons were low. Heck their weapons of any kind were low. They had their small arms and whatever the "Turnip" had needed resupplied. With over 30 Centurions this will get ugly and any reinforcements would make things worse. "Aim for their eyes" said Sgt. Riftin. Not sure that will work but better than nothing.

"Brother it was your overconfidence that got us into needing this old rust bucket" said a female in an oddly sultry voice. There were 6 figures coming out of the Cylon shuttles. Two more Centurions and 4 humans. Two men and two women. Weirdly the women looked like identical twin sisters even if the first had her hair clearly died a bright red color. The other woman had a dark blond hair was looking at her twin in annoyance or something. The two men were definitely not twins. One was a dark skinned man with a shaved head who didn't talk. The other was an older man wearing black clothes who seemed to sneer at the red haired woman. "Sister our attack has succeeded far above our wildest dreams. Don't let a few losses after that fact change your opinion. With this rust bucket we should be able to get 3 of our Baseships running without having to send them away."

Riftin looked at the others and motioned to wait. When the Captain attacks the Cylons it will be unmistakable. He was going to try to capture one of these traitors but if he didn't succeed he wouldn't be too worried about it.

Captain Perkins had been uncertain that her people would be able to stop the Cylons. These new models were tough and required either explosive, armor piercing, or just a lot of rounds to take out. They had lost 27 of 84 of her people with another 6 badly wounded. "Sgt. Riftin you said these people were giving order to the Toasters?"

"Yes sir" said the Sgt.

It would have been nice to possibly get some information from the collaborators or the Cylon shuttle but the humans had been killed and the Heavy Raider had been destroyed in the fighting. "Push this crap out and then we are jumping out of here" she said. Hopefully they would find someone.

Helios Beta
Ouranos Belt
Asteroid W845-361 "The Blob"
Day 27

LT JG Mark Fletcher was stuck here in this crevice on this rock with everyone else. For the first 4 days after the Cylon attack they had found another 37 ships over half of which had FTL capabilities with almost 9000 people onboard. Someone had came up with the good idea of using one of the largest asteroids in the Ouranos Belt. Nicknamed the "Blob" it would have just been another slight oddity (mainly due to it's impressive worthlessness) as this asteroid had been used very rarely by Erato for those occasions when the less than 1% gravity was used as a dumping ground for whatever regolith or larger chunks in the "local" area that wasn't needed. A rock moving at 30 kilometers per second is not something that you want to deal with. So "dump your trash here" had been it's purpose for a century. That such a large asteroid had essentially nothing in the way of useful minerals and zero tyleum is almost impressive in a way. It had seemed like a great hiding spot.

The problem was in the "local" area there was tyleum 3 light seconds away. The Cylons had turned that into one of their major supply bases. In the last 3 weeks the Cylons had not seen them and seemed to have no interest in this asteroid but they were stuck here. Fletcher's current shift was sitting on the bridge on the Sarek with that ship tethered to the ground. So they were waiting. Supplies should be able to keep them going for months maybe even years. They were just able to get a passive view of the Cylons three times a day (every 7.84 hours to be precise) for 17 minutes. Nothing had changed in the last 20 days. Terrifying monotony was everyone's life until they either ran out of supplies or the Cylons found them. A couple of the smaller ships might be able to jump away but not the Sarek or any of the passenger ships before the Toasters noticed them and jumped in to kill them all.

Currently they were a few hours from when they would be able to passively scan the Cylon refueling depot. Not much to do on the "off" hours. 'Huh that's weird' thought LT Fletcher. It could be nothing. Or more accurately seemed to be nothing but a well different nothing than before. Just as he was considering what to do next a Raptor flipped on it's lights. 'How the frak did it get so close' thought Fletcher?

"Colonial ship we are requesting landing instructions" said the Raptor using it's light system in a series of flashes.

After a brief talk with the permanent members of the Sarek's crew they picked a shuttle landing bay and set up the lights to signal it's location.

LT Fletcher and Captain Newman went down to the shuttle loading bay. Captain Perkins along with a squad of her soldiers were there in case this was a Cylon trap (why they would need to bother is a good question). A pair of officers in a dark black uniforms came out of the Raptor. 'That is odd' thought Fletcher. Fletcher would have sworn he knew all the SDF colors and the lack of insignia was odder. No planetary patches, ship badges, or even rank was on their uniform. The pilots themselves didn't really explain who they were but did explain the situation.

"We are part of a Colonial taskforce. We were looking for targets of opportunity and this Cylon fuel depot made our list" said the taller of the two.

1 Light Month Outside Cyrannus System
28 Days After Cylon Attack
Anteros CIC

Commander Cynthia Stewart never wanted to serve on a Warstar. They never left the Twelve Colonies and always stayed in fleets. Honestly they pretty much did nothing outside of actual combat and were considered a costly boondoggle. A Mercury had almost half the fire power of the Anteros with the ability to launch Vipers. The brand new Vindicator class Battlestar and it's 4 upcoming sisters ships would have had as much firepower as the Anteros with over 50% of the Viper capacity of a Mercury. Now the Vindicator along with every other Battlestar was likely destroyed.

However the Anteros was a tough old bird. She had taken 14 nuclear strikes and had been (barely) able to jump away. Even now down to only one main gun and missing half it's armor and most of it's point defense weapons she would easily be able to defeat the Shaitan. This newest report from the Bureau "Spook" Raptor had been a surprise. 23 FTL capable ships along with 7,000 people. They had a Repairstar (even if it was now fully civilian) that could do far more than the slapdash repairs they had been able to do so far. Also The Sarek's fleet reported setting up a couple of hydroponics ship which her fleet had so far not been able to do. In short not only did they need the Sarek's fleet it was the right thing to do.

Still she needed to discuss things with her XO (or more accurately this XO). 'Need to get that taken care of. Too bad Major Atwood is not ready for independent command' she thought for the hundredth time. Captain Mark Baber was the former Second Tactical Officer of the Anteros and highest ranking remaining officer and her current other XO. "Captain Baber I know we were discussing the target in Helios Gamma" said Commander Stewart. The two best targets were a weapons storage facility in Helios Gamma and this fuel depot in Helios Beta. The ammo depot would hurt the Toasters more but with the civilians there wasn't really much choice. Still anyone who was a tactical officer (even if secondary) on a Warstar is an expert. Warstars would often coordinate fleet or even fleets together and Stewart was not going to waste all that training.

The target on Helios Beta was simple enough. The tyleum mines would probably run out in only a few years (why it was never mined) but if you took a "who cares" regarding costs or profit it would be quick and easy place to set up a mine and the Cylons don't have to pay or even provide air for their work force. The 50 or so Raiders aren't much of a threat and the dozen or so tyleum fuel hauling ships were a very "juicy" target. The complication would be the civilians. Once the civilians in the Blob started to fire off their engines they would be noticed and a pair of Raiders could probably shoot down half of them. Once they went it was GO no matter what happened. The timing would have to be agreed to beforehand.

Day 29

The last survey by one of their "Spook Raptors" had shown no changes 30 minutes ago. Then two Baseships had jumped in just after they did. The Toasters seemed just as shocked as the Anteros was able to put 4 shots (3 into one Baseship and 1 into the other) before the Cylons knocked out their main weapon and with their missing armor and lack of point defenses they would lose an extended brawl. They only had two options and one would mean losing the civilians and probably the Aphid as well.

"Major Atwood you and the Aphid are to jump out the second the last civilian ship escapes. These orders are non discretionary" said Commander Stewart over the radio cutting off any arguments from the other ships. "Designate the closer Baseship (the more damaged one) as Bogie 1 and the other as Bogie 2. All weapons that can reach Bogie 1 concentrate on that ship with the remainder on Bogie 2. Helm head as straight toward Bogie 2 at full speed.

Their upcoming orders were clearly "odd" as in there was something that Colonel Gabrielle, Commander Valdez, or possibly (probably likely) both were being cagey about. Still finally having enough officers and crewmembers, a half company of soldiers, and a pair of Raptors and the Lamia was a solid ship with great speed and for it's size surprising fire power. This should greatly increase their flexibility for any future contact.

Author Notes. The ships at the boneyard that the Sarek were taking apart were "Liberty Ships In Space" type.

I have had a couple of questions regarding ship kinds and types. There is a longer list coming (spoilers and all) but here are the quick and dirty answers for the ships mentioned in this series. For convenience I will use the most common terminology but there are some inconsistencies.

The Chiron is a Centarur clase which are basically a "Guardian" class (I liked the concept but it's canon existence is very questionable) made large. It would be a large light cruiser or a small heavy cruiser. It is a multipurpose which means it is not good at anything but OK at many things. It is really struggling with it's "Battlestar" role.

The Rovers (of which the Orion is one) is a definite heavy cruiser. It would ROFL stomp the Chiron especially after the repairs made. The Rover is a smaller stripped down version of a Ranger Missile Ship.

The Shaitan is a Minotaur Class Gunstars. Gunstars are well all guns no missiles or Vipers. They would be in the "large light cruiser" size. Think the guns the Galactica had. It would hurt a Baseship but you would need to get so close that your ship would probably be destroyed.

The Lamia is a Manticore which and is a small light cruiser.

The Apis is a Pocket Battlestar sort of. It's really small and stealthy. The CSB made them stealthier and increased the dradis capabilities but in a "fair" fight they would lose to even an Escortstar. They do have weapons but they are more "submarines in space" than regular ships. Also the Apis had all it's Viper capabilities removed to fit it's spy role better.

Escortstars and Patrolstars are both in the destroyer leaning towards the frigate category.

Battlestar Galactica was about well Battlestars. This story is supposed to be about the Colonial Naval Forces. Some of the deficiencies of various ships were supposed to be offset by being paired with other ships. The Galactica was a tough old lady that could slug it out but these ships are all (except for the destroyed Anteros) are all second or third line ships.

Thank you all for reading! Any questions or comments are appreciated!
