- Tønsberg, Norway-
-September 1925-
Frank Kent was desperate. He was looking around like a mad man, desperately trying to find shelter. His shoes echoed through the empty streets of the dark village he was in. The reason Frank was so desperate, wasn't because of himself, he had no trouble sleeping on the street, he had done that plenty of times when he was a kid. The problem was his wife, Mary, she was in labor, with their first child, and she was close.
Frank could tell by the way she kept crying and screaming. Frank had taken to carrying her bridal style. Frank ignored the exhaustion and pain in his arms, he didn't care what happened to him, all that mattered was his wife and unborn child, it was the least he could do since he had persuaded Mary who was three months pregnant to join him on his business trip to Norway, but it had gone awry.
The boat was delayed on sea, due to a freak thunderstorm that lasted for a week. One passenger had said they saw a man in the lightning. And when they finally arrived in Norway, Frank and Mary's luggage was stolen by a hoodlum which had most of their money, and most importantly their passports. Now they were on the outskirts of Tønsberg, with no money or friends.
Frank refused to have his son or daughter be born in the deserted street, but it was quickly looking like this would be the case.
Frank had been running around for ten minutes, until finally, he saw a slightly lit building. It was large and it was made of bricks, and looked to resemble a church of some kind, Frank prayed there was inside. Frank practically ran over to the building and kicked the door.
Frank's arms were ready to collapse, but the locks on the door he had kicked started rattling. Someone was opening the door. Frank tried to wait patiently, but as soon as the door opened, he rattled off a stream of words. "I need your help. My wife is having a baby. Can she deliver it here?"
The owner of the building looked at the scene before him. The owner had ragged brownish grayish hair and was dressed in a brown overcoat with grey trousers. He quickly looked at the odd couple, the man with brown eyes and crew cut black hair, was dressed in a business casual suit, his face was manic. But what caught the owner's attention was the woman in his arms, her shoulder length black hair was covered in sweat, obviously from the baby, she grasped her stomach which was covered by a blue dress, she was groaning in pain.
The owner was reluctant at first, but he couldn't turn them away, he had children of his own, he briefly forgot the secret that the building housed.
"Come in quick." He gestured for the couple to enter. Frank sighed in relief, the journey was over, he moved slowly into the old building. The owner looked outside to make sure the couple weren't followed, he slowly closed the large wooden door and started applying all the various locks. The room they were in was old, that was the only word Frank could think of to describe it. It was lit up with candles and chandeliers, the stone bricks were dusty, it looked older than time, there was even a stone coffin in the center of the room, it was obviously made for a knight. Frank ignored the details of the room; all his attention was on his wife.
Frank's shoes clicked against the stone floor; he was obviously in a hurry. Thankfully his skills as a field medic would pay off. Frank started mumbling things to her, "It's okay Mary...you're gonna be alright."
Mary looked at Frank and gave him a weak smile, suddenly she cringed again, she leaned her head back and let out a yell. Frank set her down next to a wall, he was so preoccupied with his wife he failed to notice the beauty of the wall he had set her up against.
It had stone carvings on it, the carvings were of a tree, it even had a snake engraved on one of the roots. Mary brushed her hand against the stone snake, it seemed to let out a soft hum. Mary didn't catch the sound, as another wave of pain hit her. Mary was so preoccupied she didn't even notice the glowing blue streak that was slowly running up her arm, it vanished awhile after.
The owner of the building watched Frank and Mary from a distance, fascinated by the events unfolding in front of him. Frank could feel the stares of the man, it was distracting, not wanting to be rude, Frank turned and said, "Could you get me a towel?"
The owners eyes widened, he nodded slowly, and walked off, his eyes didn't leave Mary until he was out of the room. Frank sighed he looked at Mary, he quickly removed his grey suit jacket and suspenders, the man silently prepared himself, then he looked at his wife's stomach, he took a deep breath, and started to roll up his sleeves, he breathed out, "God give me strength."
Frank thanked the owner that gave him the small white towel, it was a little wet, but it would do, he wrapped it around the baby that was in his arms. The owner took a couple steps back, and admired the child, Frank did not mind, he couldn't stop staring either. The small child in his arms wailed louder, but Frank smiled as the baby cried, "Hey, hey...it's okay. Daddy's here."
Mary was panting, sweat covered her face, but she still managed to hold out her shaking arms, "Let me see them." Frank nodded, he couldn't drop the smirk from his face, "Sure, here HE is." Mary smiled, as she took the crying bundle from Frank, "It's a boy?"
Frank nodded, and replied with a large amount of pride, "It's a boy."
Mary looked at the crying baby, he was hiccupping from crying so hard. Mary cradled her son, "Shhh. Shhh. I'm here." The baby squinted at his mother obscuring his eyes; Mary moved a hand over the small amount of black hair on his head. Frank moved so he was leaning against the wall and close enough so he could see his son.
Frank smiled, "He's got my nose."
Mary nodded, "He has my hair.".
Frank smiled, he couldn't help but think of the future, "What are we gonna name him when we get back to the States?"
Mary smiled down at the small boy; he had finally calmed down. "How about after my father?"
"Eddie Kent...I like it." Frank admitted.
Mary smiled, she looked down at the small Eddie, the new mother was on the verge of tears she was so happy. "Happy Birthday Eddie." The newly named Eddie cocked his head to the left and opened its mouth as if to yawn. Mary smiled, "Yes, your name is Eddie. Do you like it?"
"Thank you so much for helping us." Frank says as he walks over to the owner and extends a hand for a handshake. The owner shook the younger man's hand and smiled in reply.
The small child smiled and gurgled, Mary moved her hand to brush his hair, as soon as she contacted his head, the baby opened his bright blue eyes for the first time.
Mary gasped at the sight, which made Eddie suddenly whale, Mary immediately tried to soothe the baby, but nothing she did worked. The baby just seemed to cry louder and louder, the owner of the building slowly moved his head to look at the wall, he realized the mistake he had just made. His willingness to help may have just doomed the world.
"It's okay." Hushed Frank as he returned to Mary's side.
"His eyes Frank, they're…" Mary whispered taking her tired eyes off her son. Frank kneeled next to his wife. The baby's fresh tears rounded on his small cheek, and Frank looked down at his son confused at what could have warranted such a reaction. But as soon as he saw it, he was already grabbing the baby.
The old man quickly stepped forward, "is there anything wrong?"
Frank stared at his child, and with Mary too exhausted to stand, tugged on her husband's pant leg.
"Where's your nearest hospital?"
Eddie silently looked at the ceiling in fascination, as he was coddled in his father's arm. The owner of the building looked into the babies eyes to see his suspicions had been confirmed. Even from the angle he was looking at, there was an obvious oddness, the newborn now had brilliant, bright blue ones.
The owner frowned, "There's one just six blocks south from here."
Frank turned to his wife, "I'll head down, and have them send a car for you." Frank said. Mary whimpered holding her hands up for her boy. The baby boy finally quieted down as he was returned to his mother's arms. She whispered sweet nothings and softly kissed his head.
Frank turned to the owner, "please watch my wife." The owner merely nodded; his brow furrowed in what this could be. Frank started to pull the baby out of Mary's arms, and Frank made a brisk exit from the building, "Thank you." He said to the owner then went out the door.
The owner offered his arm to the recent mother, "come with me, I have an empty bed where you can lay.". Mary took his offered arm and rises. Much to Mary's surprise the owner was able to support much of her weight. As they left the main area the owner of the building tossed an inquisitive look at the walls, 'Was that you?" The wall didn't respond, and after almost tripping, decided the will of God was not for him to be privy.
Unknown to the man was a soft hum, that originated from behind the snake. The secret that would remain in the wall for some time almost sounded pleasant.
