11:00 PM
"Good night everyone!"
That was the last thing everyone expected to hear from Hammy of all of them. It wasn't because it was Hammy or really the fact that Hammy usually went to sleep around the same time as them. No, it was actually because Hammy was going to sleep pretty early, which was something usually saved for the kids and, as of late, Stella.
"Hammy getting an early sleep tonight?" RJ asked aloud. "Gotta say, that's something I didn't have on my bingo card."
"RJ, please don't tell me you're starting a bingo game of our daily lives." Verne spoke with a tone that would imply that RJ has done this before.
"Hey, it was one time Verne, and besides, everyone loved it, especially Hammy!"
"Because he won."
"Yeah, and Stella came really close, but she couldn't get 'Heather gets a boyfriend'." RJ replied, and as he left Verne alone to take in what he just said (and ignoring the glance he was being given as soon as he said that), he came to the realization that maybe turning in early was a great idea.
There was going to be a heist tomorrow early in the morning at the Ritter residence. RJ had been doing some scouting out of the place, and he realized that there were quite a few things they had that would certainly benefit the family. From the usual like food to a few tools that would help quite a bit on heisting, and even a miniature hockey stick that would probably be useful if push came to shove. Unfortunately, while the family were out at around the same time as everyone else at around eight, they had hired a maid who didn't get there until around ten, so an early morning heist was needed if they wanted to raid them.
Then again, it was only ten and it seemed that no one could sleep, so they could stay up a bit late.
"Alright gang, gather around, who's down for a little movie night?" RJ asked the remaining awake members. A movie night would be perfect at this time, especially since they hadn't had one since their little movie festival completely bombed. Besides, RJ had an ulterior motive in mind.
"A movie night?" Ozzie asked, clearly bewildered by this idea. Shocking, RJ thought he would've been more into this.
"Yeah Oz, a movie night, I want to watch Chainsaw Death Murder Kill V!"
The Chainsaw Death Murder Kill series, or CDMK for short (what else), was, if the title didn't give it away, a horror series. During a heist, RJ was doing his usual search for miscellaneous stuff, and while he was there, found a boxset of the franchise. Unfortunately, while the other discs were missing and RJ had no time to find them, CDMK five was still in the box.
Needless to say, RJ had been waiting for the right moment to finally introduce the family to this discovery, and why not a night like tonight?
That was unless a certain turtle had anything to say about it…which he did.
"No, no way, RJ, we're not watching a horror movie."
"Come on Verne, the kids and Hamster are asleep and they're out cold, we got a free pass!" RJ replied, gesturing to the aforementioned kids and Hammy, both of whom were sleeping soundly in the log.
"I don't care, we strictly said no horror movies." Verne continued. "Besides, what even is this movie?"
"Saga, Verne…" The raccoon replied, prompting Verne to roll his eyes. "...and in this saga, Victor Clementine returns from the dead to wreak havoc on the people who murdered members of his family."
"That's it?" Verne asked with an uneasy look on his face. Not surprising, considering the synopsis was likely more than enough to ring some alarms that this movie was not for the faint of heart.
"Yeah, and it's super gory, like blood shoots out of everywhere, even from places you wouldn't expect!"
"Like a wazoo?"
"Especially the wazoo!" RJ exclaimed. "That's the best part!"
If it wasn't clear by now, RJ had his heart set on watching this film. He only briefly looked at a few clips to really see if it was anything worth watching. While the critic reviews lambasted it for being nothing more than an over-the-top gore fest with underdeveloped characters, from the clips RJ has seen, it looked like a lot of fun.
"Wait, RJ, you seriously like those films?" Heather spoke up. It was then that RJ remembered that Heather was also a pretty big fan of films as well, especially considering how much recording she did during the ill-fated movie festival.
"Yeah, I do…nothing wrong with that." RJ replied. "Why?"
"I mean, I was thinking that with your…opinions…" Heather spoke. "...you would like something a bit more refined, like The Seer or Misama."
"They're boring Heather." RJ replied, leaning his head back in somewhat mock boredom. Truth was, he did see those movies once and never found them interesting. All they really did was just build up suspense resulting in a cheap scare, and to this day, he never saw the appeal in them.
"They're considered iconic pieces of horror media!" Heather exclaimed. Clearly, she saw the appeal in them for some reason.
"They don't have blood in them!"
"Critics called them horror classics!" Heather replied, pulling out the phone RJ often used for relaying instructions and showing him a review website. Sure enough, several reviews on 1980's Misama called it a "horror classic" and "one of the scariest films ever made". Of course, RJ had an airtight defense as he took the phone from Heather.
"I stopped trusting critics after they gave Grade School Dancer a ninety-six percent." RJ replied as he chucked the phone over his shoulder, before shivering a bit. He had been unfortunate enough to catch the ads for that movie, and to this day he wondered how no one went to human jail for making that film.
"They won tons of awards!" Heather spoke, not even phased by what RJ said.
"Did we forget we dedicated a whole episode to making a movie because a movie we hated won an award." RJ replied.
"Don't remind me." Tiger spoke up, remembering just how bad that week was for him. RJ could still remember the sight of all the quills stuck in the poor cat's back. He would think about it more, but Verne interrupted his thoughts.
"Fine, if you two end this argument, we can watch Death Murder, something, something." Verne spoke. Once more, he got tired of the inane conversations that the Hedgies seemed to be getting into more since RJ first joined them.
"Chainsaw Death Murder Kill V." RJ spoke.
"Whatever it is, fine, we can watch it."
11:30 PM
Much to RJ's surprise, Lou, Penny, and Ozzie decided to call it a night just as he was getting the movie set up. Sure, they didn't agree to it and there was an early morning heist, but the former two in Lou and Penny were always eager to learn something about the humans and their habits, while Ozzie just liked movies. Guess getting a goodnight's sleep was more important than watching a horror movie.
Of course, RJ was going to ignore this moral, just for the sake of the plot.
As RJ set up the movie (and took a long time since he had no idea how to work the other programs on the laptop), Verne made himself busy by deciding to retrieve the phone that RJ had so carelessly tossed aside just to prove a point to Heather. Finding it near the log, Verne would quickly retrieve it and start to head back to the others. He didn't want to wake anyone, especially Hammy.
As for why Verne was awake as well, it was actually for a simple reason. It wasn't just to keep an eye on things or really try and convince the remaining Hedgies that were awake to sleep. He knew it was an argument he would never win.
No, the real reason was because deep down, he really wanted to see this horror movie. Just from the title alone, it sounded over-the-top violent, but at the same time, it sounded so cheesy that maybe, just maybe, it wouldn't be so bad.
As he approached the TV, he noticed that Tiger was still awake. Surprising, considering he was a cat and as such, Tiger often slept a lot. Full moon perhaps?
Those are werewolves Verne, don't be silly.
"Wait Tiger, I didn't think you were into horror." Verne said to Tiger, sitting down next to Heather on RJ's bag.
"My owner never watched a horror movie, and I want to see one, so why not?" Was Tiger's simple reply. That was all the two said to each other before the title screen finally popped up, reading Chainsaw Death Murder Kill V in…Times New Roman.
Of course, Verne had to roll his eyes at the lack of effort. Of course, like he mentioned, this didn't seem like a serious movie, but man, could it be any more obvious? At the very least the movie didn't have the gall to make their font in arial bold or so help whatever the humans believe in comic sans.
As always, RJ didn't seem to care.
"Aw yeah, the eighth film!" RJ exclaimed. Immediately, confusion set in for the turtle. He may not know everything (actually, he did, or he believed he did), but he did know that V in roman numerals was not eight. It was five.
"Wait, I thought you said this was the fifth film?"
"Nah, that's just the title, the second, fourth, and seventh movies were prequels." RJ replied.
What.
"That just makes things even more confusing." Verne continued.
"...and the seventh one was apparently a prequel to the second movie."
"You're kidding me."
"He's not, these movie's timelines are really hard to follow, but from what I saw, people just watch it for blood and guts." Heather replied, popping a piece of popcorn into her mouth. This just led to even more questions for the turtle, and with those questions came a desire to find out more about this movie and its nonsensical timeline. Remembering the phone he had on him, Verne flipped it open, curious to see just what the heck sort of chronology they were working with.
That was until RJ snatched it from him and chucked it away once more.
"Hey, no phones while watching the movie." RJ spoke.
"I swear you're going to break that one of these days." Verne said.
"It's a Nokia, things are indestructible."
As much as Verne wanted to continue to warn RJ about throwing the phone (or using outdated humor), he decided to just watch the movie, ready to see what sort of "scares" this movie would throw at them. After a bunch of dialogue happened where a lawyer of sorts was revealed to be investigating a drug ring, he found himself confronted by two cops at his home.
That scene ended with the first death of the movie, with that lawyer being beaten by those corrupt cops and being fed into a woodchipper.
There was gore, lots and lots of gore. In fact, there was so much gore that if Verne wasn't scared, he would be seriously questioning if that was really how much blood was in the human body.
"Is he actually dead?" Verne asked, in shock at what he just saw.
"The character?" RJ asked. "I mean, yeah, you're fed into a woodchipper, you become red paint."
"How is this being done?" The turtle asked again, taking a surprising amount of interest in just the process of how this scene was made. Knowing Verne, it was likely just a reassurance that this was fake, and that these movies weren't essentially made on LiveLeak.
"Easy Verne." RJ spoke. "Using state of the art effects, they simply made a realistic human body, and fed it into the woodchipper."
"Actually, they used MS paint to move him." Heather spoke up with an unamused look on her face.
"Really, how can you tell?" RJ asked.
"RJ, you can see the outline and even the mouse cursor moving him." The opossum replied. A long pause followed as RJ seemed to register just what Heather was saying.
"Well, to be fair, I never said the movie was made on a high budget, but you can't prove it." RJ spoke, prompting Heather to roll her eyes.
"Do I need to show you?" She asked, before leaning forward to press the back button on the laptop and rewinding the scene, making sure to have RJ pay extra attention to the death scene in front. Of course, RJ seemed to not get it, Verne was still mortified at the violence, and Tiger…just wanted to watch the movie.
"Do you get it now?"
"Nope."
Cue another rewind, another exasperated sigh from Heather, and Tiger being inches away from throwing his paws up and turning in for the night. Knowing him, he'd probably find a way to watch the movie on his own time. In front of the kids no less.
"RJ, the mouse cursor is right there, the budget is about as high as Tiger's likelihood to get injured this episode." Heather spoke, and much to Verne's surprise, Tiger didn't even react that much this time, although it was likely because he was really holding his tongue.
If he bit his own tongue, then Heather is a genie of sorts.
"It's probably just the laptop we're watching this on!" RJ exclaimed. "Look, I'm telling you, remove the mouse cursor from the screen, and this scene will look a whole lot better!"
As RJ looked to touch the touchpad, a whimper sounded out behind them. They knew for a fact that it didn't come from the movie, considering that it was still paused. No, it came from behind them.
Turning around, they saw a clearly petrified Hammy standing there.
Well, we're back with a late Halloween Special (i guess), where Hammy just got scared of a movie! Will the gang be able to sleep and help Hammy? Who knows?
Also, I can't believe we're coming up on the anniversary of the day I started writing these stories. Wild.
Anyways bye!
