The morning sun shone brightly, illuminating the narrow streets of the city. As Leopold approached Hiroshi's workshop, the familiar sounds of hammering and the warmth of the forge greeted him. Hidemaru was already there, engaging in hushed conversation with the blacksmith.

As Leopold entered, Hiroshi ceased his work and turned to present a meticulously crafted wrist blade. The slate grey bracer was subtly interwoven with silver threads that shimmered softly in the light. At its center, the falcon emblem looked as if it were ready to take flight.

Hiroshi held it out for inspection, pride evident in his eyes. "Dō desu ka? Kore wa anata no kitai o koeru koto ga dekimasu ka?" (How is it? Does it exceed your expectations?)

Hidemaru quickly translated, "He's asking if it meets your expectations."

Leopold carefully took the wrist blade, admiring the intricate details and the craftsmanship. Sliding it onto his arm, it fit perfectly, the blade retracting and extending with a satisfying smoothness. "It's exceptional," he responded, nodding appreciatively at Hiroshi.

Hiroshi bowed slightly, a humble smile on his face. "Anata no tatakai ni yūyō na dōgu o teikyō dekiru koto wa kōei desu." (It's an honor to provide a tool essential for your fight.)

As Leopold practiced a few swift movements with the blade, ensuring its functionality, Hidemaru approached, "Now that you're adequately equipped, we have pressing matters to attend to."

With their newly acquired asset and determination burning bright, the two Assassins were poised to delve deeper into the intricacies of their mission.

Navigating the intricate alleys of the city, Hidemaru broached a topic steeped in controversy. "Leopold, are you aware of Ii Naosuke?"

The European Assassin shook his head, prompting Hidemaru to delve into a brief history lesson. "Ii Naosuke is currently the Tairō of the Tokugawa Shogunate. He wields considerable power and has been at the center of many pivotal decisions in recent times."

Hidemaru took a deep breath, steeling himself for the heavier portion of the conversation. "One of his most controversial moves has been the Ansei Purges. With the Shogunate feeling threatened by the increasing unrest, Naosuke launched a series of purges against those he deemed to be a threat to the Tokugawa rule."

Leopold's brows furrowed. "Purges?"

"Yes," Hidemaru confirmed. "Under the guise of restoring order, many high-ranking officials, scholars, and daimyos who opposed the Shogunate or its foreign treaties were imprisoned, exiled, or executed. It was a brutal crackdown, and many innocents suffered as a result."

Leopold's gaze darkened, understanding the gravity of the situation. "Such acts usually leave deep scars. I assume this has further fueled opposition to Naosuke and the Shogunate?"

Hidemaru nodded, "Precisely. The Ansei Purges have exacerbated tensions, drawing stark lines between factions. While Ii Naosuke might have intended to consolidate power and silence opposition, he has also made himself a prime target for those seeking revenge or to halt the Shogunate's perceived tyranny."

The European Assassin mulled over the new information. "It seems we've landed right in the midst of a powder keg. Given the Templars' modus operandi, they're bound to exploit these tensions."

Hidemaru added, "Ii Naosuke has surrounded himself with foreign advisors. Ever since the black ships arrived and Japan was forced to sign unequal treaties, the Shogunate has been making efforts to modernize, to learn from the West. It's a desperate bid to regain some semblance of power."

Leopold raised an eyebrow, intrigued. "Foreign advisors? Do we have any information on them? It wouldn't be beyond the Templars to position themselves close to power."

"That's precisely our concern," Hidemaru responded, his expression grave. "Some of these advisors have been known to influence policies that benefit foreign interests more than they do Japan's. And while it's expected that outsiders would advocate for their homeland's interests, the extent of their influence is... suspicious."

"Could any of them be Templars?" Leopold questioned, leaning in.

Hidemaru looked around, ensuring no one was eavesdropping, and then whispered, "We're not certain, but there are a few whose backgrounds are murky. Their sudden ascent to advisory positions, coupled with the nature of their advice, has raised alarms within our Brotherhood."

Assassin: Hidemaru's expression grew somber, his voice edged with concern. "Sakuma Sozen, a friend and ally of mine, has been detained and placed under house arrest by Ii Naosuke."

Leopold paused, absorbing this revelation. "Sakuma Sozen? The scholar who's been advocating for Japan's modernization through Western insights? I came across some of his writings during my preparations for this mission."

"Exactly," Hidemaru sighed. "His progressive ideals and calls for embracing Western technologies have not sat well with many traditionalists. Ii Naosuke's Ansei Purges have been targeting and silencing such dissenting voices, and now Sakuma has been caught in this web."

"Do we know the exact reasons for his arrest?"inquired Leopold.

"We believe it's a combination of his outspoken views and perhaps some underlying political machinations," Hidemaru mused. "There's also the growing suspicion of Templar involvement. They might view Sakuma's vision for Japan as an obstacle to their designs."

Hidemaru's voice held a note of deep respect. "There's a contact you should meet while you're here. Anything you might need, whether it's poisons, weapons, or other specialized equipment, he can provide. He has been instrumental to our cause."

Leopold looked intrigued. "Sounds like a valuable ally."

Hidemaru's tone was somber, "I can tell you where he is being held up, but we can't risk breaking him out without turning him into a fugitive."

Leopold's expression tightened, sensing the gravity of the situation. "I understand the implications. But can I at least speak with him?"

Hidemaru nodded, "Yes, you can visit him, provided he consents. However, be prepared to be watched closely. Any direct rescue operation would not only endanger Sakuma further but jeopardize our entire mission."

Leopold replied with a grim determination, "Then I'll tread carefully. But we can't leave him in their grasp for too long. The information he holds is crucial."

Hidemaru met his gaze, "I trust you'll know what to do when the time comes."
