CH. 5 The Dog House

Adrian cautiously unlocked the door. He peeked his head in and was met by an angry growl. It was an attack dog! He pulled his head out of the room just in time to feel the dog slam against the door. Adrian wiped his face. His coat. He could wrap one arm in it and at least defend himself while he looked for the key. Adrian again, ran across the building to where he had left his coat. He wrapped his arm and hurried back to the room. He cheered himself on this time. "Okay, okay, here we go. You're bigger than this dog!"

He opened the door and stepped in quickly. His eyes fell on the snarling canine before him and to his complete terror, he found the key. Attached to the dog's collar was the key to room 4. The key and the dog came flying at him. Adrian threw his wrapped left arm out to the dog and the animal took it. The snarling animal clamped down hard on Adrian's arm and shook it violently. Adrian winced at the pressure. His coat wasn't thick enough to fully protect him, but he fought for control anyway. He reached for the collar, but the dog released his arm and snapped at the intrusion.

The sudden release and Adrian's reflex to pull back caused him to misstep and he fell back hard against the wall into a sitting position. The dog came again. Adrian had to throw up his arm to protect his neck and face this time. His coat was ripping, and he could feel the dog's teeth begin to puncture his skin. The detective's adrenaline kicked in again. He could waste no more time. He suddenly threw all his weight on top of the dog and wrestled him to his side, effectively pinning him. Adrian growled back at the dog as it squirmed and snarled. Adrian desperately worked the collar free and gave one last "AARRGGG!" to the dog. The dog whimpered and released Adrian's arm. Adrian cautiously pushed himself up and away from the dog, but the dog just laid there looking at Adrian in complete submission. As Adrian backed away and toward the door. The dog began to thump its tail on the ground pleadingly.

"Stay!" Adrian demanded. He backed to the door and stepped outside, slamming the barrier behind him. Leaning against the wall once again trying to catch his breath, he inspected his arm. Dropping his now destroyed coat to the floor he found only a couple of small punctures and some definite bruising. He then looked at the collar and ran to room 4.
