Chapter 20 (Keefe's POV)
Sorry that I haven't posted in so long. I've had a lot going on, but I hope you enjoy this chapter!
The day of the Soulmate Announcements
"Welcome to the Soulmate Announcements!" The announcer talks like a robot. "Today we will be telling you your soulmates. If you were here last week and received your thing, then you and your soulmate will be called up to the podium."
What's happening? Sophie's sweet voice fills my head. They're just explaining the rules. I tell her, fidgeting with the sleeves of my shirt. I wish they didn't make us wear these fancy outfits. They're so uncomfortable.
I'm (unfortunately) wearing an ice blue suit that they had ready for me when I came. Biana is wearing a teal dress and is standing next to Dex, who is wearing a periwinkle suit. I think you see the pattern. We're all wearing clothes the color of our eyes, except Marella. She has this weird obsession with fire, so she's wearing a red dress. All of our outfits are much more simple than they were the day of the Receiving.
"I will begin calling the names now, so listen closely and come up when your name is called. You will receive a soulmate contract and leave the stage." Mr. Robot yells, because everyone is talking. People quiet down suddenly, like they're scared of him. Ha. I could take him down easily.
Be careful Keefe. Sophie says, startling me. How do you know what I'm thinking? I ask. I don't, I just know you well enough to know you're about to do something reckless. She replies. I smile. You really do know me well.
"Sarah and Mario." Mr. Robot begins. Two kids squeal and go up together. They receive their contracts and then leave the building. It feels like a prison.
"Sam and Elise. Tam and Marella. Fitz and Stella. Luna and Troy." Mr. Robot continues. Marella and Tam go up together, and Fitz goes up with a girl I have never seen in my life. By the look of surprise on his face, he's never seen her either.
I don't listen until Mr. Robot says, "Linh and Wylie. Biana and Dex. Keefe and Sophie." He said our names. I tell Sophie. Really! Oh my gosh. I wish I could be here for this. She replies.
Me, Linh, Wylie, Biana, and Dex walk up to the stand. We all get our contracts, and they hand me two. I leave the building, and when I get out, all of our friends are there. They all look happy, except for Fitz who looks like he is a mix between confused and angry. When he sees me, he glares at me and storms away. I guess he hasn't forgiven me.
I say goodbye to my friends and then hop into my car. I'm on my way. I tell Sophie.
