Hey everyone!

We finally have a premiere date and I figured I could update this story to celebrate.

Hope you like it!

Xoxo,

Nina

At the bullpen everyone was talking about how well Adam and Kim had handled the situation, and even though they didn't have a date or a location to meet with Jones, they were trying to get everything they could ready.

This needed to be perfect, there was no room for error, which meant that they needed to work their asses off.

It was almost time to go home, Voight had explicitly asked them to get all the rest they could because they were going to need to be ready and sharp at any minute's notice; but still, everyone was doing something, compelled in their computer screens, making the best possible use of their time. That was until Atwater took his phone out of his pocket.

"Shit."

"Everything ok?" Asked Jay, who was looking at him attentively.

"I hope so. There is something wrong in the building." He looked at the time and then continued to speak. "I'm gonna have to go and check it out."

"Need help bro?" Adam asked full of concern.

"I might."

"Let us know." Jay added.

"Yeah. I'll call you if I need a hand. Imma get going though."

"Yes, go. It's time to leave this place anyway and Voight said we could leave as soon as we had everything." Halstead encouraged.

"I'm gonna give him the heads up." Atwater turned off his computer and grabbed his jacket before stepping into Voight's office and then leaving the bullpen saying a quick goodbye to his colleagues.

"What's that about the building? Did he move?" Kim asked no one in particular.

"He didn't. He actually bought one. You know, he wants to give back to the community." Adam replied.

"Aw, that's so nice of him. Typical Atwater." Burgess said with a warm smile. Even if they weren't as close now as they used to be, his huge heart and values were something so unique and permanent to him. It made her happy to know how he kept being true to himself, it even inspired her.

They all rounded up their work and started to leave for home, Adam took that as cue to get closer to Kim and try to deal with their issues once and for all.

"Kim." He said somewhat timidly. She looked at him over the top of her eyes as she was putting some things in her bag.

"Yeah?"

"Do you maybe wanna get together?" His nerves were evident and so were hers.

"Um, uhh, I can't."

"Oh."

"Yeah, I have dinner plans." She said looking around to see if her life boat was nearby, and lucky for her, he was. "Right, Jay?"

"What?" Halstead asked, trying to get in the loop of the conversation.

"That we're having dinner tonight."

The truth is they weren't, but Jay was smart enough to figure out what was happening and he didn't want to turn his back on Burgess.

"We are. There's a new Italian place by house that's very good. You should try it sometime, Ruzek." The blue eyed detective added, trying his best to tick off Adam and succeeding completely.

Ruzek on the other hand, just managed to roll his eyes before speaking. "Maybe someday I will." He put on his jacket and zipped it up. "You guys have fun."

"We'll try." He looked at Adam leave and only when he was sure they were alone he opened his mouth. "Hope my little Houdini is hungry, because now I really want to go to that restaurant."

"Houdini? Really?"

"Well, both of you are notoriously known by your escape acts, so I think that nickname suits you." He said, closing his eyes and with a triumphant look on his face as he threw one of his arms over her shoulders.

"Fair enough." She said defeated. She figured he had a point.

"You know you're going to have to stop this at some point, right?"

"Yes, but can we just eat now?"

Jay laughed at her answer and just nodded guiding her towards his truck.

They drove, having fun and completely avoiding the elephant in the room. He could tell her a million times that both her and Ruzek needed to get their shit together, but Kim was going to do whatever she felt like doing, or whatever she could do.

"How hungry are you?" He asked her after looking at his phone, which had buzzed only a few seconds earlier.

"I'd like to get some food, but I'm not starving. Why? What's wrong?"

"Kev. Apparently there's a problem with some pipes or something in the basement and he needs to move some stuff so there's enough room to repair it. He asked for a hand." He put his phone away and brought all his attention back to the street. "Do you mind if I stop there? I mean I can drive you to your place and then pick you up for a late dinner."

"No, let's go help Kev. I'm sure the more people the faster he will get it done, right?"

"Exactly." He answered with a smirk and changed and made the turn needed to go to Atwater's.

After some minutes Jay called Kevin, letting him know they were a couple minutes away from his place.

"Thanks so much for coming, you guys." Kevin said happily before he went to hug both his friends. "I'm sorry this is the way to get to see this place, Burgess. I promise next time you're here is going to be on a totally different note."

"No problem, Kev. I'm happy to help and I am really glad you're doing this."

"Yeah. It's a headache sometimes, but I like it." He said, humbly.

"I love this conversation you guys, but I think we should get this started before it gets any darker." Jay tried to hurry them.

"Yeah, let's go."

Kevin guided them to the basement and all three of them started to move some things around

"Jay, would you help me take this upstairs?" Atwater said, nudging at a black metal box that looked pretty heavy.

"Sure." Halsted was quick to answer and then turned to look at Kim. "We'll be right back."

"Yeah, I'll keep moving those boxes over there so you guys can take them up later."

Both men nodded at her comment and took the metal box to start moving it.

Kim was very concentrated. She was happy to be doing this for two reasons, first she was helping a friend she really cared for and second, it was helping her keep her mind off Adam. Is not that she could actually not think about him, but solving all her pending issues scared her, because up to this point she didn't really see a way out. All she saw was that her feelings she had for him were as deep as ever and that even in the best case scenario, they would still live in different places making anything between them almost impossible to happen.

The sound of footsteps coming down the stairs made her start speaking to share what she had done so far.

"Ok, I think these are all ready for you guys to take them up."

"Um. Ok." His voice sounded confused, making her turn around. "I guess I can take those upstairs."

"Oh. Adam. Hi."

"Hi." He said shyly. "I took you by surprise, I guess."

"Yeah. I didn't know you were here."

"Kev called me and asked if I could give him a hand."

"Good." She looked down trying to avoid his eyes, they were her own kryptonite. "Should we bring those up?"

"Yeah. Let me get that and you can keep gathering the stuff. Does that work?" He asked politely.

"Sure."

She got back to her task, while Adam took a couple of boxes and headed to the stairs, but some weird noises called her attention. "Is everything okay?"

"Yes. I'm trying to get the door open."

Kim got closer to the stairway and looked up to find Adam maneuvering with the knob and the boxes scattered around him on the steps. "It's playing tough, huh." She added trying not to play cool.

"Well, I actually think it's jammed."

"What? You're kidding right?"

"I am not, Burgess."

She looked at him suspiciously. "You're doing this on purpose." Her words came out of her mouth like darts aiming directly at Ruzek.

He loved her. He had not a single doubt in his body about that, but he was also running out of patience and her comment steered him into getting pissed off.

"Why on Earth would I do that?"

"To talk."

"With the hostility that you treated me the whole day, the least that I want is to spend the rest of my evening locked up in this basement with you. And if you think I'm doing this on purpose, why don't you come and check it out for yourself?"

"Well, guess what? I don't want to be locked up here with you either." She pushed past the boxes and even pushed his shoulder with hers on her way to inspect the door. She looked and touched every part of it only to realize that he was right. It was jammed.

"And? Was I trying to trick you?" Adam asked, showing how irritated he was by what she had implied.

"You're right. It's jammed." She admitted in defeat and Adam just rolled his eyes at her. "I'm sorry."

"It's fine." He walked down and sat on the first step. "At least now I know how you really feel." He said that part on the low, hoping that she wouldn't hear him and she didn't.

"We'll just wait for Jay and Kev to come back."

"Jay?" He arched an eyebrow and turned his face to look at her. "He's here?"

"Yeah. We came together." She started to walk down, but instead of sitting on the step just like he had done, she decided to go back to her old task.

"I didn't know you two were that close." He couldn't hold back his jealousy anymore.

"What's that supposed to mean?" Her anger began to match his.

"Nothing. Unless it means something."

"The audacity you have to say that to me after your girlfriend slapped me in the face." Adam didn't say anything, because she had a point. He had no right in making a scene. "That's what I thought. I can hang out with whoever I want, and just because I have a friend it doesn't mean I'm hooking up with him. Or did you think that when we were together and I was with Kev all the time?"

"No, but we were together."

"Well, now we're not and I have the right to be with whoever I want."

"So, I'm right."

"What difference does it make?" She asked with a loaded look and just when he was about to answer, they heard a banging from the other side of the door. "Thank God, they're here."

"Guys!" It was Kev's voice echoing through the space. "The door is locked."

"We know. Can you get it open?" Kim asked politely.

"Um, the key is jammed in the lock. Jay and I are trying to solve this, just hold on there for a few minutes. We'll get you out."

"Thanks Kev." The brunette said before walking away one more time. She started to roam around the room to find somewhere to sit as far away from Adam as possible, until she found an old couch that was in pretty good condition in a far end of the basement and that's where she was going to wait.

"They are going to hate us for this." Kevin told Jay as they started to walk away from the door.

"Nah, they'll be naming their children after us." Halstead joked, getting a roll of eyes from Kev. "Ok, maybe they'll hate us a little at first. But come on, we both know that if we keep waiting they won't ever say what they need to say."

"They're just too stubborn." Atwater added.

"Exactly." Jay patted Kevin's back. "We're doing a good thing Kev."

"Yeah. Yes. We are." He paused for a moment. "So who's letting them know they will be spending the night locked in there?"

"I'll text Kim, you text Adam. How does that sound?"

"That works."Kevin pulled his phone out of his pocket and Jay imitated the action. "Ok, let's do this."

It took them a few seconds to type the message and hit send, bumping thor fists once the deed was done.

"Let's just hope for the best now." Jay said as he slid his phone back into his pocket. "Now it's up to them."

"They'll figure it out."

"Gosh I hope so."

They both left the building and headed to their cars expectant to see the outcome of their mission.
