A/N: I didn't actually mean this to be anything other than a oneshot, however I have a few plot bunnies rolling around and I'm sort of falling in love with the story I want to tell. Enjoy.
My boyfriend took me on the sweetest date last night. He booked out the nearest school library and set up a candlelit dinner. We sat there, surrounded by books.
He took me there on his motorbike. It was a surprise. He told me he wanted a date and a midnight kiss. I asked about where we were going and he said "Back to our roots, love."
I love riding his motorbike. I never feel more free. Hair ripping through the air, hands on his belt, me and him, fixed, as time whips past.
Soon enough we stopped outside the local high school. He took out a key, unlocked the door and led me through the corridor.
"What are we doing, Spike."
"The first time I tried to kill you was in a high school. I thought I need to bring you back, and obviously Sunnydale no longer exists. " He frowned. "I miss that place, sometimes. "
"Me too, honey." I murmured back, not realising until then it was true. I had the best and worst times of my life in that town. I let him lead me to the next room.
I was instantly struck by candlelight all over the room, especially on the centre table, where there was an antique candelabra in the middle, surrounded by two pizza boxes and half a dozen cans of grape juice.
"Spike..."
"I was never allowed in the High School Scooby Research sessions. So I thought I'd recreate one, for our special date."
"And our midnight kiss."
I was on my third slice of pizza when I said it.
"I love you, Spike."
He grinned. My favourite grin of all. The one that comes straight after I tell him I love him.
"I love you too, pet."
He kissed me then. God, I never thought this would happen. Me and my Spike, sitting in a candlelit library, exchanging kisses tasting of pepperoni and grape juice. He's taken me on other dates, to expensive restaurants or picnics. Even some of our training sessions ended up in kissing and looking up at the training room ceiling dreaming of our future.
These were the best. The most organic. The most us. The moments when we remembered who we were and how we met, instead of focusing on who we are trying to be. We take off our masks together. He lets himself read and write poetry, and I buy stuffed animals to put on our bed.
The next morning we go back to work and train the slayers. We're making a difference. Raising the next generation, in our own way.
These were the things I was thinking of when I sat there. And the things I told Spike when he asked.
We got our midnight kiss. Me sat on his lap surrounded by candles as the moonlight shone in through the window, highlighting his pale skin.
I pulled my lips away, and he pulled his arms around me. He put his head on my shoulder.
"Forever?" He asked in a whisper.
"Of course. I love you. "
"Listen, baby. I'm going to propose soon, I just want it to be perfect, you see. "
"Being with you is perfect. You and me, here. I love you, Spike."
I sighed, and kissed him.
"Forever."
