Void of darkness was what one could perceive from the point of view of a certain man standing on his feet while doing nothing more than staring at his feet. No emotions or details could express what he was experiencing or what mood the individual was possessing. All he did was just stand and wait.
After all, it wasn't the first time he was here like this.
The time was irrelevant here. He might get a job within minutes or what felt like years. He didn't feel pain or numbness even standing for hours or days or months, thanks to the body he possessed, however, it didn't mean he never felt bored.
Boredom was a term associated when a person with a lot in mind, still couldn't do any of those things...however, the man was different. He knew he had an adventure to initiate yet the briefing of the mission was getting prolonged for some indefinite reasons.
And that was the source of his boredom.
'Well, not like I can do anything more than remain here and wait for them.'
A sigh resonated across the space as the man found his shoulder slumping slightly. His whole person was now getting mentally tired.
Thankfully, the entity he was waiting for, arrived soon after,
[Aren't you getting a little too impatient these days, my child.]
"I am sorry, mother. I just sometimes tend to feel that the time I waste here could be used on my next mission?" The man's voice remained firm yet soft at the same time. It was like he was betraying his character to show his emotions to the entity that emerged in front.
The said entity was a female, with feathers on her back yet no definite image to define what the woman looked like. Her figure was blurry, almost felt like she was a hue, nothing more. The only certain thing about her was the two white protrusions from her back and her feminine voice which may ensnare a God.
However, the man remained unfazed, not just because he considered the entity as his mother but also because he had been visiting her quite a few times to get charmed by her.
[I do try arriving shortly after your completion, but the fact that there are several realms in my watch separates me from my son, for longer than I could ever tolerate.]
The man had a blank face, seemingly because he knew, not everything she said was true. It was a fact that she cared for him despite the difference between their races and power levels, however, she still was a deity through and through, who considered every person under her watch, as her child. So the man found in no position to consider himself special.
Not like it affected him more than a slight fluctuation of his emotional wavelength.
"Where am I going to get assigned this time?" The man asked since the other one was surely too busy to spend her time talking about trivial stuff.
The woman's expression remained obstructed by the blurry congregation of lights, but soon after she relayed her orders for the man to oblige.
[The next world is full of flesh-eating demons, who strive to widespread their masses and overtake the world. Their lord has a dream. A desire to overcome something that every demon fears and is weak toward. ]
"Sun?" The man asked, unsure. He has read and experienced much folklore to conclude that to be the case and hearing her response, his hunch was proven right.
[Indeed, child. Demons aren't immune to sunlight and they are trying their best to find a vessel through which their weakness could be prevented. And if that happens...well, I don't need to tell you.]
The man remained silent, an unusual frown marred his face, "For Mother to call me for this mission means that there is a vessel in there that would help them fight against their nemesis, am I right?"
A world that could lead to prosperity and find solace at the end of the day, was not somewhere he needed to intervene but since he was here, hearing information from his mother regarding the demon-infected world meant something was going to change for bad.
[Indeed my child. A variable has sprouted and within due time the world I am sending you might get into the clutches of darkness. Some people may not let the demons take over but the numerous innocents that may die in the process surely aren't something you and I would ever like to see, right? ]
The man...was a little confused. If things are going to be sorted out by the residents of the world, then why was he needed? Until now the man was only sent to those worlds that were destined to fall into ruins, but this...
"Mother...do you have anything specific in mind that you need to relay?"
The man wanted to get the idea of the whole scenario before he could jump in and begin slaughtering demons like a maniac. He needed to be confirmed of the details or his venture could turn drastic.
And as thought, the lady has something on her mind that she wants to be done,
[I need a grandchild from you.]
The space deteriorated after that. Before the man could have said or do anything to protest, the command was relayed and his consciousness began fading the very next moment.
He had no option other than to accept his destiny.
It was the first time his mother so abruptly threw him away, since they both knew, that he was about to protest and reject the idea of impregnating a woman while being on the mission. But being a deity she could go against his resistance and make him do what the man doesn't find ideal.
'Well, not like I would need to be responsible for the woman... 'Was what he thought, however, the future was something he also didn't have any strong hold on.
His consciousness soon began to clear up. He was so accustomed to this procedure that facing the blinding light didn't feel a burden to him. Keeping his eyes open, he waited for the scenery to clear up in due time. His muscles were relaxed but the person was on guard, just in case he needed to face a demon the very moment he opened his eyes.
However, it wasn't how he anticipated.
The first thing his eyes were greeted with, was a wooden ceiling almost ten feet away from his face and a ceiling lamp just in the corner of his vision. The man didn't panic and decided to first get up and assess the surroundings...only to find a severe headache struck him.
"Agh... " He groaned since this pain was new. He saw flashes after flashes which surely were memories of the person he had become...but how was it possible?!
The man has never experienced something like this before. It wasn't like he never was transmigrated into another one's body or sometimes reborn as a child, but adapting their knowledge and memories...this never happened before. The man has himself wished it to remain like that since any alteration in his emotions could influence his judgment.
Yet...
'Why would she...' With such thoughts, the man closed his eyes and fell asleep. His brain was overloaded with the information his new body brought and the assimilation of what his soul brought forth.
He needed to calm down and let everything assimilate first.
The next morning, when his eyes parted, the man knew his identity and in what kind of world he was born in.
It was ancient Japan before the Second World War, however, the sole element that differentiates this world from a normal one is the presence of demons all across Japan.
Demons. The flesh-eating beasts who know nothing more than carnage and bloodshed. They lurk in the darkness and attack those who couldn't defend themselves. The man has faced more disgusting creatures than demons so he didn't find the information too disturbing.
Straightening his back, he found his long orange hair with red ends falling off his shoulder. His yukata was slightly undone, to show his tight muscles and defined physique.
He was in the body of a former Hashira, named Rengoku Shinjuro.
This man was a part of the corp that fought against the demon and held a mutual ambition to put the demon lord into eternal slumber.
Previously, he used to work for that group named Demon Slayer Corp as the highest-ranked hunter, a Hashira. There were only a few people in existence who could reach that level and Shinjuro was one of them. However, now the mantle has been delegated to his elder son and Shinjuro has been reduced to a mere retired old man.
'Living a retired life...huh.' Before today, he never had the leisure to think about such trivial things, considering how he always had to keep on fighting and saving the world, given his role in those worlds. But now, not only did he have that much time to sort his situation out but also, the emotions of a thirty-two-year-old man.
Turning his gaze, he found that someone was lying beside him with a pale complexion and a troubled expression on their face.
It was his wife, Rengoku Ruka.
'She is beautiful.' He was a war veteran and someone who had seen battles and massacres his whole life, but when a beautiful person came in front of his gaze, he shamelessly complimented them like it was a matter of fact.
Midnight raven hair that seemed like an endless sky was currently sprawled over her pillow as the woman slept with her thin brows frowned. Her facial features were defined and symmetrical which provided a comforting view to the eyes. Her small lips were plump and pretty which made Shinjuro, who has recently acquired human emotions, stare at them quite intently...to the point that the woman suddenly woke up.
"Ah...Shinjuro-san." As she parted her lids, the rosy red eyes came into view making Shinjuro look at her quite closely. Indeed, she was petty.
"You didn't have to wake up so early." Shinjuro was slightly uncomfortable to suddenly converse with the woman who was a complete stranger to his soul. But to this body, she was a loving wife whom the previous owner, adored more than anyone else.
The mangled-up feelings of the previous owner and the emotionless data the soul brought, created an awkward Shinjuro which even surprised Ruka.
"I...generally wake up a little early. I would start preparing breakfast right away." Her tone was tranquil, like the peaceful lake one would like to just sit and gaze at. Her demeanor was calm like a serene breeze of the fresh spring...yet Shinjuro knew what pain she hid behind her facade.
"You don't need to push yourself like this. Since you are sick, I can sometimes take care of the breakfast." Saying so Shinjuro got up on his feet followed by the woman, who despite being surprised, acted on her instincts.
Because she just woke up, her wardrobe malfunction was allowing a lot of skin exposure, which urged Shinjuro to turn himself away with a tight crease between his brows before he announced his departure.
"As your husband, it's also my responsibility to take care of you, so lay down and rest for the day."
Ruka was thoroughly surprised to hear so many unexpected words from her husband, who despite being strict as always, was giving off a strange vibe that made her eyes slightly widen.
However, in Shinjuro's eyes, her frozen movement felt like the woman was being stubborn so after a quick tongue click, he turned toward her, and picked the woman in his arms.
"Ah!" Ruka exclaimed and instinctively hugged her husband's strong neck to support herself. But being in the broad and reliable arms of Shinjuro, she knew she wouldn't fall.
"S-Shinjuro-san?" A surprised Ruka whose face was adapting the same shade as her eyes asked in a startled tone as her husband began walking back toward the bed.
Shinjuro's narrowed eyes remained trained forward as he cautiously crouched down and gently laid the frail woman back on the futon. Draping the blanket over her exposed self, he told her in a firm tone,
"Rest or I will carry you the whole day in my arms."
Ruka's face boiled up hearing that, and the thought of being seen by her children in that state made her nod her head instantly.
Satisfied, Shinjuro got back on his feet and walked out of the room.
Leaving a completely flabbergasted Ruka behind.
A/N:- This is a random idea that I got from one of the fanfictions I was reading recently. It would be quick romance, and action, and the main character is overpowered.
Anyway, I dunno whether I would update it or not, but if I get in the mood then you might see the next part tomorrow. Until then, cya~
