Chapter Twenty-One

Morning has arrived, the sun just peeking over the horizon. Hooty had at one point during the night placed Danielle on the couch and tossed a throw blanket over her. Stirring awake, Danielle sees Collector staring at her face to face. King and Hooty meanwhile were in the kitchen.

"Mornin Collector," said Danielle, sitting up. "What happened?"

"King had said you passed out and needed rest," replied Collector, looking at Danielle. "You said something was exploding before you passed out. Did it feel like a Big Bang?"

"I… I'm not sure," replied Danielle, touching her chest. "It's not the first time it has happened but it has been a long time since the last one."

"I need more proof to know if she's part of my race," thought Collector, eyeing Danielle. "Just touching the tablet is not enough. She doesn't have duel-toned skin but that color in her eyes and her braid… I've seen that before but from whom."

"Collector," said Danielle, looking at Collector. "You, okay?"

"Just thinking," replied Collector, looking at Danielle before seeing King in the hallway. "King!"

"You're awake," said King, running over to Danielle and snuggling into her. "I'm so glad you're okay."

"Yeah… but Eda won't be," said Danielle, stroking King's cheek. "I have to go back and save her."

"Not on an empty stomach," said Hooty, pushing his face into Danielle's face. "Me and King made pancakes."

"I'm not really hungry," said Danielle, getting up and walking to the hallway. "I'm going to the weapon room and… Hooty!"

"Nope," said Hooty, picking Danielle up before placing her in a seat in the kitchen. "You're eating. Chuga-chuga!"

"I can feed myself Hooty," said Danielle, pushing the fork away before looking at the pancakes. "These are…"

"Yup," said King, entering the kitchen while holding the pillow with Collector's tablet on it. "Made the ones you like, double chocolate with whipped cream and strawberries."

"Aw, you two," said Danielle, pulling Hooty and King into a hug.

"Those look yummy," said Collector, eyeing the pancakes.

"Can you eat in that form?" asked Danielle, looking at Collector. "If so, you can have mine."

"Danielle!" said Hooty and King, looking at Danielle.

"Nope," replied Collector, looking at Danielle. "My actual body is sealed away in the In Between, no thanks to King's dad."

"Will you stop thinking I'm a Titan already," said King, looking at Collector. "I am the King of Demons."

"I'll… uh, explain later," said Danielle, looking at Collector before Hooty put a slice of pancake in her mouth. "Mmm… … Hooty."

"I can do it like mama birds do if you like," said Hooty, about to stuff the pancakes in his mouth before Danielle pulled it away.

"No no," said Danielle, shivering on the thought. "I'll eat, I'll eat."

"Good," said Hooty, watching Danielle. "Go on… eat."

"Fine," said Danielle, grabbing her fork and knife. "But what about you two?"

"Already ate," said King, looking at Danielle before pulling out a book. "Also got a book so you…"

"I've read it plenty of times already," said Danielle, eating her pancakes. "Very questionable on a lot of things. Look, I'm going back to the castle and saving Eda after this."

"Think capturing Eda was part of his big plan?" asked King, looking at Danielle.

"I don't know what this big plan is," said Danielle, stuffing another piece of pancake in her mouth. "But if saving Eda puts a stop to it, then I'm game."

"Why put a stop to our game?" asked Collector, looking at everyone. "Everyone looks happy playing it."

"Huh, what are you talking about?" asked Danielle, looking at Collector as she eats another bite of the pancake.

"We've been playing it since the Deadwardian Era," replied Collector, looking at Danielle. "And it will end on the Day of Unity. I'm so excited! I'll be able to play something different after all these years."

"Deadwardian Era!? But that means Belos is hundreds of years old," said Danielle, regaining herself after choking on her pancake.

"There's no way he can be that old," said King, looking at Collector. "Sure, there are some people that can reach a hundred but hundreds of years… he's definitely using magic of some kind to extend it."

"And not the good kind of magic," said Danielle, looking at King then Collector. "Which means the only ones that know the game are you and him, everyone else is oblivious of what's going on. What is this Day of Unity? Cause this is the first I've heard of it."

"I don't know the whole specifics," replied Collector, looking at everyone. "But he needed magic and a certain spell to play so I taught him. Though there have been a lot of times when it got really boring playing the game, and I mean a lot… when are we going to play? You promised."

"And I will," replied Danielle, looking at Collector. "But everything you said so far pertaining to Belos, it just… it sounds like… I don't know, everything is getting complicated I can't keep up."

"We'll figure something out," said King, putting a paw on Danielle's hand. "And I'll go with you to safe Eda."

"I'm drawing the line right there," said Danielle, looking at King. "You're staying here King."

"Look, me and Eda don't always see eye-to-eye, but I do consider her family," said King, looking at Danielle. "I want her back as much as you do."

"Look, I lost Eda to Belos," said Danielle, looking at King. "I can't let that happen to you too."

"But…" said King, looking at Danielle. "Why do you always do this? You have no problem helping others but when it comes to others helping you, it's like you can't accept it. Let me help, I haven't learned those glyphs for nothing."

"I-I-I…" said Danielle, thinking about her Grampa before looking at King. "If I agree to let you go, will you promise to listen to every word I say? Every word, even meaning if I tell you to run, you run."

"I promise," said King, looking at Danielle.

"Seal it with your pinky," said Collector, looking at Danielle and King, wagging his pinky finger. "Seal it with your pinky."

"Pfft, alright," said Danielle, a slight smile on her face as she wraps her pinky finger with King's pinky finger.

"Alright, now that's how you promise," said Collector, looking at Danielle and King. "Now about those glyphs…"

"All right here," said Danielle, taking out every known glyph on her person.

"Holy Morning Star!" said Collector, staring at the glyphs. "The Titan really likes you."

"The Titan?" said Danielle, looking at Collector. "As in the Boiling Isles Titan."

"Yup," replied Collector, looking at Danielle. "Where did you think glyphs come from?"

"The world itself," replied Danielle, looking at Collector.

"No silly," said Collector, looking at Danielle. "Glyphs are Titan magic. There's always four basics then combinations… wait, I don't recognize this one… or that one… or that one… that big bully didn't show me every one."

"I may have come up with a few myself," said Danielle, lightly scratching her cheek before getting up and placing her dishes near the sink. "Alright, scratch those weapons, the sooner we leave and save Eda, the sooner we can get back here."

"Wait," said Collector, looking at Danielle. "What about me?"

"I will play with you, like I promised, but if I bring you with me and Belos found out I took you and snatches you away, I wouldn't be able to live with myself," said Danielle, looking at Collector than Hooty. "Hooty, watch after Collector, protect him and keep him safe, okay."

"On it," said Hooty, saluting Danielle.

"Don't worry, we'll be back and with Eda," said Danielle, letting King hop into her hood as she puts on her inline skates and leaves the house.

"Philip said he would tell others about the game, so why hasn't he? It's no fun if no one knows they're playing," thought Collector, before seeing Hooty staring at him intently. "Why are you looking at me like that… wha-aah!"

Skating down through Bonesborough as fast as she could, Danielle sees a lot of people murmuring to themselves. And for good reason, as the news report revealed that Eda was to be petrified at sundown in the Conformatorium. Danielle's anger flares and the exploding feeling within her kicks in again, only to ignore it.

"Petrification is only done to the worst criminals, and once the spell is complete, it can't be reversed," said King, as he hears the news report as they skate on by.

"Then we just have to stop it before it even happens," said Danielle, skating around more people. "We have to get to the Conformatorium in time."

"We'll have to do something so diabolical, so criminally insane, that they'll have to send us to the Conformatorium," thought King, before spotting a sign. "Hey, Danielle, I have an idea."

"Whoa, King, wait," said Danielle, skating after King on to some grass. "This is no time to…"

"Hey, Coven Guard," shouted King, gaining a Coven Guard's attention. "Whaaa?"

"Hey… what?" said Danielle, being picked up by the Coven Guard alongside King then tossed into a paddy wagon. "Oomph… King."

"This will get us to the Conformatorium quicker," said King, in a low voice as to not be heard by the Coven Guards.

"Mmm," said Danielle, pinching the bridge of her nose.

As the paddy wagon starts moving down the streets, Danielle and King bide their time. After a certain amount of time, the paddy wagon pulls into the Conformatorium. Statues of petrified witches and demons are seen by the two before seeing one being placed with Eda's name on it. Backing up into the Conformatorium docking bay, Danielle gets a glyph in place.

"Sir, the Owl Lady's human student has been apprehended," said the Coven Guard, staring at Warden Wrath.

"Very good. Ah, Danielle the Human. How I've waited to see you again. Now I'll have my revenge and you'll have front row seats to Eda's demise," said Warden Wrath, opening the doors to the paddy wagon only to be met with pillars of wood shooting out and pinning him in place, screaming all the while.

"I wouldn't even try," said Danielle, standing in the paddy wagon, her eyes aglow in a light purplish pink, staring at the Coven Guards before hopping out with King and confronting Warden Wrath. "We can do this the easy way or the hard way. Where's Eda?"

"She's in the holding cell in the dungeon," replied Warden Wrath, scared of Danielle.

"That doesn't tell me much," said Danielle, staring at Warden Wrath.

"Draw a map," said King, pulling out a pencil and a piece of paper.

Drawing out the lay out of the Conformatorium, Warden Wrath watches as Danielle and King dart down a hall with the map in tow. Danielle by then had changed back to her shoes for more stealth, as the sound of her inline skates would have given her away. Seeing Coven Guards at almost every turn, both Danielle and King set off numerous glyphs to deal with them. After dealing with the last set of Coven Guards, Danielle and King come upon a door down the hall.

"Alright, this better be the one," said Danielle, opening the doors before looking at King. "Keep watch, have the glyphs at the ready."

"Right," said King, saluting Danielle before striking a guarding pose.

"I am way out of my comfort zone," said Danielle, looking around before spotting Eda in Owl Beast form, setting off a light glyph. "Eda… Eda, it's me."

"Danielle? Oh no," said Eda, the light spell helping her come forth. "Oh no, no, no, no, no, wh-what are you doing here?"

"Me and King are here to save you," said Danielle, gently stroking Eda's feathers before setting a fire glyph on the chain to melt it then placing an ice glyph on it. "What? The constant back and forth between fire and ice should be putting some wear on the metal… so why?"

"Your magic isn't strong enough for this," said Eda, placing a claw towards Danielle. "You need to leave! Now."

"But, but I can't!" said Danielle, staring at Eda. "It's my fault you're here, it's my fault you were captured. If I had…"

"No. Listen to me. I'm here because of my own actions. I went against Belos's law, and for a while I was able to get away with it. But," said Eda, sighing. "Well without magic, I can't do much. I don't regret anything. I lived freely and... I got to meet you."

"But…" said Danielle, staring at Eda.

"But if you stay here, I won't be able to protect you," said Eda, placing her claw against Danielle's face. "You need to leave. Now!"

"But who will protect you? I'm tired of always being protected by my dad and the one time I'm trying to protect right now, you're telling me to leave," said Danielle, staring at Eda. "Your realm has already helped me in various ways already. You helped me find the weirdo inside me even if I have a hard time seeing it."

"Danielle…" said Eda, looking at Danielle.

"Us weirdos have to stick together, remember," said Danielle, staring at Eda. "You said that the first day we met. Losing you will hurt me, not as much as much as when my mom left but it will still hurt. All I thought about was getting you to teach me magic so I can find my mom but as the days went by and we grew close, I realized… I've enjoyed your guy's company. It gave me a more exciting life than just going to school and going home after only for it to be repeated every day."

"You have a family already. Go back to them. And when you're home, use your fire magic to destroy the portal door," said Eda, touched by Danielle's words before placing the portal key around her neck. "I don't know why Belos wants it, but we can't take any chances."

"What… why would he…" said Danielle, before hearing a siren going off. "What… no!"

"Danielle, get away!" said Eda, pushing Danielle away as the chain around her neck glowed and transformed into a cage.

"No no-no-no," said Danielle, grabbing hold of Eda's claw. "Not yet, please don't…"

"I'm sorry," said Eda, pushing Danielle off. "Goodbye, Danielle."

"Eda!" screamed Danielle, watching as the platform completely rises to the ceiling. "No nonononono, Eda… Eda…"

"Drat!" said Lilith, entering the room as she holds King by his scruff, Danielle going stiff as she hears her voice.

"Let me go!" shouted King, before seeing Danielle stare at Lilith with glowing eyes. "Not good."

"I'm too late, at least I found you, human," said Lilith, staring at Danielle only to back up slightly as Danielle stares at her.

"Lilith… you bound your sister in chains, brought her before Belos," said Danielle, angrily approaching Lilith. "And because of it, she's about to be petrified not just because of my actions but yours as well. Tell me, how do you want to die today?"

"This human has lost it," said Lilith, blasting away some fireballs Danielle sent her way. "What… how… you're not even using those so-called glyphs of yours… aah!"

"Danielle," shouted King, only to notice Danielle's hair beginning to change slightly to silvery white. "What the?"

"Ah, stop! What is wrong with you?" shouted Lilith, as Danielle tackled her through the portal door.

"Danielle!" shouted King, following after Danielle through the portal door. "Danielle, watch out!

"Please, just listen to me!" said Lilith, getting behind Danielle and pulling her into her clutches.

"Why should I? Eda's about to be petrified which she doesn't deserve," said Danielle, glaring at Lilith.

"You're right," said Lilith, seeing Danielle halt in her struggling. "I deserve to be in Edalyn's place."

"… … …" said Danielle, pushing Lilith off her with an invisible force. "Explain now, you have five minutes."

"When Edalyn and I were younger, we were, the best of friends," said Lilith, recounting old memories.

"… … … … …" thought Danielle, a memory going through her head as she listened to Lilith's story.

"Flashback"

In the woods far from her house, a young Danielle is curled up crying near a tall tree. A rustle is heard before a teen girl comes out from the corner of the tree, spotting Danielle. The teen girl had sandy blonde chest length hair in a loose braid and blue eyes. Wore a simple red/white checkered buttoned up shirt with rolled up sleeves, dark blue jean shorts, and brown sneakers.

"Danielle," said the Teen Girl, walking close to Danielle.

"Go away!" shouted Young Danielle, sobbing into her legs.

"Danielle, you know I can't," said the Teen Girl, walking closer. "Let's go back to your house. Your dad is…"

"I said go away!" shouted Danielle, not noticing an invisible force hit the Teen Girl.

"Aah!" screamed the Teen Girl, placing her hand against the wound on her forehead before falling to the ground.

"Holly!" shouted Danielle, before clutching her chest in pain. "O-ow…"

"Danielle!" said Holly, running over to Danielle and checking on her. "What's wrong?"

"What's wrong with you?" asked Danielle, staring at Holly, innocently. "You've been really mean to me ever since Uncle Ken died. I'm hurting just as much as well. Mom left during the night and now Uncle Ken is gone months later. I just want you to go back to being the kind cousin I know."

"Look, I'm… sorry," said Holly, sitting next to Young Danielle and pulling her into a side hug as she cried. "I didn't mean for all of this to happen, I was grieving all wrong. Things are changing too much since Mom decided to move and I ended up backlashing on you."

"Holly…" said Young Danielle, looking at Holly while holding her chest.

"Let's go back to your house," said Holly, getting into a crouching position and looking at Danielle. "Your dad and my Mom are probably… Danielle, are you okay? Danielle."

"Exploding… I feel… exploding…" said Young Danielle, clutching at her chest before passing out.

"Danielle!" shouted Holly, watching Young Danielle collapse on the ground.

"End Flashback"

"Holly," thought Danielle, clutching her chest. "Why did that memory come to the surface?"

"I know how to rescue Edalyn, but I can't do it alone," said Lilith, looking at Danielle.

"How do I know I can trust you after everything you've done?" asked Danielle, before Lilith summoned Owlbert and the staff before placed in her hands. "Owlbert. Alright, but it's a temporary truce but should you betray me, I will attack."

"Thank you," said Lilith, before releasing King from his confines.

"Weh?" said King, before standing up.

"Now, lets head back," said Lilith, walking towards the portal door and entering back to her realm.

"Dad…" said Danielle, looking in the direction of her house.

"Hey Danielle, you... need a minute?" asked King, staring back at Danielle.

"I'll be fine," said Danielle, walking towards the portal door and entering the Demon Realm, while holding her chest. "Why does it hurt to go through the portal?"

Lilith guides Danielle and King through the Conformatorium. Going down many passages before walking down a hall covered with meaty tendrils all over the place and on statues.

"You can take this up to the stage where they're holding Edalyn," said Lilith, gesturing to a platform.

"Thanks," said Danielle, eyeing the platform. "What will you do now?"

"I will stay in the Emperor's coven, but I will make sure nothing like this ever happen again," replied Lilith, looking at Danielle.

"Good luck with that. Somethings not right, there's no guards" said Danielle, glaring around the place before meaty tendrils grab Lilith and King. "King!"

"Ah, Lilith," said Emperor Belos, sitting on a skull-like throne nearby. "You chose the wrong side."

"You…" said Danielle, angrily glaring at Emperor Belos with glowing eyes. "Release them."

"Ah puh-puh," said Emperor Belos, staring at Danielle. "I'd actually like to have a word with you, human."

"I have no words to say to you," said Danielle, pulling out a few glyphs.

"Okay," said Emperor Belos, staring at Danielle. "I'll play."

Danielle had set off her glyphs the moment Belos attacked. Blue vines entangle Belos only for him to slip out. An electric spiderweb blasted to the side. Shards of ice instantly melted. A wave steamed away. All the while as Danielle attacked Belos, her hair was slowly changing to the silvery white color and her eyes halfway to looking a light purplish pink.

"What's wrong, human? I thought you wanted to fight," said Emperor Belos, making his voice vibrate throughout the hall before thinking. "This girl is craftier than I thought. And it looks like the glyphs are having a side effect on her as well."

"Aah!" squeaked Danielle, being grabbed by meaty tendrils.

"Had enough?" asked Emperor Belos, reappearing from the shadows.

"What do you think?" asked Danielle, shattering Belos's mask in half with an extended light sword. "No way… it can't…"

"I like your spirit," said Emperor Belos, his mask falling to the ground and his face revealed. "But try that again and things won't end well for you."

"Caleb Wittebane…" thought Danielle, seeing the uncanny resemblance to the statues back home. "But… how?"

"Now, I'm just a humble messenger for the Titan. In the grand scheme of things, the Owl Lady's life is inconsequential," said Emperor Belos, standing before Danielle. "But then you showed up. If you want to save your mentor, give me the portal to the human realm."

"But… my home… the story…not Philip…" thought Danielle, her mind a jumble as she clutches her chest. "Exploding… too much… exploding… exploding…"

"You probably think we want to invade the human realm, but the Titan's will is not so boarish," said Emperor Belos, walking around Danielle. "You'll understand soon. Tick tock, human. The Owl Lady doesn't have much time left."

"Just explode…" thought Danielle, letting the feeling over take her.

A blast of magic comes from Danielle, pushing Belos away. Danielle's hair has gone completely silvery white and her eyes glow. An eight-pointed dark blue star flickers on her forehead. Dark blue intricate swirly designs trail up her arms, with a sun on her upper left arm and a crescent moon on her upper right arm, flickering as well. Danielle floats in the air, looking down at Belos with fury.

"This child is… half human," thought Belos, before glaring angrily at Danielle. "Another monstrosity that needs to purged as well."

Various elements float around Danielle. Holding her hand, the elements fly towards Belos, relentlessly attacking him. Belos swats them away with little success. Teleporting in and out away from Danielle's various attacks, Belos glares at Danielle before teleporting behind her and striking her near the platform as the portal key around her neck slips out. Danielle places her hand around it as Belos stomps on her hand. The Portal Key activates as the Portal Door appears before them.

"The Titan will be pleased," said Belos, grabbing the Portal Door before kicking Danielle on the platform. "Go on then. Go be a hero."

"My lose, your lose," said Danielle, eyeing the Portal Door and setting it aflame as it explodes. "You're not returning to Gravesfield Caleb."

"What?" shouted Belos, eyeing Danielle has the platform reaches the top. "She knows more than she should."

"Stinking statue," said Danielle, eyeing the statue as she sees it before blasting it to ashes. "You'll never petrify anyone ever again."

"Danielle…" thought King, staring at Danielle then seeing Eda collapse. "Wh—what do we do?! I don't think any of my glyphs are that strong enough to help."

"The spell wasn't completed! Maybe I can help her fight it!" said Lilith, placing her hands on Eda.

"No! What is happening?" said Kikimora, before being blasted off the stage.

"Eda…" said Danielle, running over to the cage.

"Danielle… wait," said King, seeing Danielle blast the cage away and placing her hands on Eda, pushing her magic into Eda to reverse the petrification, tears streaming down her eyes as the pain increases tenfold, blood leaking from her mouth. "Eda… Eda… Eda!"

"Danielle!" shouted King, looking at Danielle, concerned.

"Eda, czy wszystko w porządku?" asked Danielle, teary eyed while looking at Eda.

"Don't know what you said there," said Eda, opening her eyes. "But as good as I'll ever be."

"Wycofaj się!" said Danielle, eyeing the Coven Scouts encircling them.

"Let's fly," said Eda, flinging Danielle and King onto her back while Lilith climbs on before flying away.

Flying towards the Owl house, Eda tumbles a little in flight. Danielle clutches her chest in pain, breathing heavy and wincing every so often. King is worried as he sees Danielle in such a state. Landing in front of the Owl House, Eda pants heavily as everyone climbs off her.

"Eda…" said Danielle, ignoring her pain as she pulls Eda into a hug. "I'm so sorry. I-I-I-I'll get some of your elixir."

"No, human. No amount of elixir can heal her now. Oh, sister. I should have done this a long time ago," said Liliith, as she cups Eda's face and placing their foreheads together. "With this spell declared, let the pain be shared."

"Eda…" said Danielle, seeing the spell take place and Eda back to her normal self with her left iris now being silver and a streak of white now in her hair. "Heart of gold, soul of silver, I'm so glad you're okay."

"Looks like I'm seeing a side of you that you haven't revealed till now," said Eda, letting Danielle sob into her chest. "It's okay. It'll take more than that to put me down."

"Eda…" said Danielle, staring up at Eda. "Can you still use magic?"

"That's a no," replied Eda, seeing her spell circle disintegrate before ruffling Danielle's hair. "But I got those glyphs to fall back on now, just like you said that day."

"I feel that I've been weakened as well," said Lilith, staring at her hand.

"One star baby coming through," said Hooty, regurgitating the tablet before Collector comes out in the open.

"Never leave me alone with that parasyte again," said Collector, curled up in a ball, rocking back and forth before seeing Danielle, thinking. "Lady Asteria… no, wait… that's Danielle. She is a member of my race… er, well, half of it."

"Exploding… exploding…" said Danielle, clutching her chest before coughing up a pool of blood.

"Danielle!" shouted Eda and King, as Danielle slumps to the ground, coughing up more blood.

"Is she okay?" asked Lilith, bending down alongside Eda and King as they hold Danielle as she still coughs up blood. "Is she not entirely human? Could it be her other nature is coming out?"

"I don't know," said Eda, before Danielle passes out in her arms.

"Let's get her inside," shouted Hooty, wrapping around everyone and placing them in the living room.

"Her room is too far," said Eda, picking Danielle up and placing her on the couch. "Best not to move her around too much."

"She'll be okay, right?" asked King, placing a throw blanket over Danielle before looking at Eda with puppy eyes.

"I don't know King," replied Eda, stroking Danielle's hair. "I really don't know."
