Chapter 8: Bongo:

Jack's POV:

The harp led us to a pack of bears. They were slapping each other.

"Is there some sort of war," asks Momotarō.

"No, I believe this is how bears show their affections," says Zhang.

Bears: When a bird loves a bird, he can twitter
When a puppy falls in love, he can yap
Every pigeon likes to coo when he says "I love you"
But a bear likes to say it with a slap
When a whippoorwill's in love, he can whipper
All the horse's neck and all the turtles snap
Every deer and every dove have a way of makin' love
But a bear likes to say it with a slap

You can ask any bear, oh, there's nothin' to compare
With a love tap strong or weak
So, if you're ready for romance
And you ever get the chance
Grab your girl
Give her your cheek

So, when love comes along, don't be silly
Never ever waste your time like a sap
Let the others hug and kiss
But the bare facts are this:
That a bear likes to say it with a slap
Slap, slap
Give me a love tap

Grab your bears and swing 'em wide
Shake their fur and scratch their hide
Give her a slap, give her a cuff
Go 'round that floor and strut your stuff
He slapped her once and he missed her jaw
And he wound up smackin' his mother-in-law
Now here comes grandpa gettin' in line
And here comes baby bear behind

"Bears are weird," says Urikohime.

"I'm sure they think the same thing about us," says Zhang, "there! That drum could work."

We were heading for the drum, but then one bear jumped in front of us. He handed us a card. "Bongo the Bear," I said, "if you want this drum, you must defeat him in a drum-off."

"Leave this to me," says Zhang.

All the bears then gathered around us. Bongo went first. Then Zhang. Then Bongo. Then Zhang. Then Bongo. Then Zhang won! Zhang and Bongo then shook hands... claws... hand and claw and Bongo gives us the drum.

"Then let's go," I said.

"You were a worthy opponent," says Zhang.

. . .

"Giant demons, magic harps, drumming bears," says Momotarō, "this is a weird place."

"And with this drum, I will be able to banish the demon," says Zhang.

"According to this sign," says Urikohime, "we're about to be trapped in a maze!"

We were then trapped in a maze.

"It never ends," I said.

To Be Continued

In the next chapter, Jack and his friends try to escape the maze.
