-Chapter 4-

Seven Up, Knock 'em Down (Life Starts Now)

12/23/20XX [Continued]

Hey Diary, it's me again. It's early in the morning, the sun just rose an hour or so ago. Dew still covers the ground and trees. I'm eating a breakfast of canned beans and a slice of bread. Definitely going to see about hunting down some food from town. A Stantler passed by camp as I was cooking. I worried that he might try something, but after a tense moment, he just nodded my way and continued on. Pokemon really are so different from animals. It's... it's wild.

Anyway, I've got a pot of Petilil leaf tea going on the fire right now. Everyone is enjoying a peaceful morning's breakfast before we pack up and start the trek to Sandgem... I miss Cynthia. I wonder what Steven would say... Is it possible that I was too dependent on her presence? I don't know... I just... hope she's doing better than me right now.

Alright, that's enough wallowing for me. I'll chat with you after we get a more long term camp space set up tonight.

/-/

Day 1

The town of Sandgem reminds me of my old home, before California. A little too much for comfort. I shift the bag on my shoulder with a grimace. From my vantage on the hill near Rowan's lab I have a pretty good view of the town. Festival decorations are being hung along the main streets, mostly paper lanterns and streamers. It looks like spots are being sectioned off for festival stands as well. It's hard to believe that in only a week, this sleepy town will be alive with Trainers and Pokemon from around the world.

Tents are starting to appear in a sectioned off field as well. The trip from Jubilife can be pretty long and the Poke Center teleportation services are almost always reserved for emergencies. Even if I had tried, I probably wouldn't have been able to use them. I really owe Volkner big time.

"So are we going down to the Lab?" Shaymin shifts on her perch atop my head. "You've been standing here forever..."

I let out a long, suffering sigh. "I know, I know... It's just nerves you know?"

"Shay."

I grin as she pats my forehead with a gentle paw. "Thanks for the encouragement. Alright, then lets get down there." I start off down the hill, doing my best to ignore the anxious butterflies in my stomach. I can't tell what I'm more scared of... not getting answers, or actually getting answers.

It's only a few minutes until I'm standing outside the gate that leads up to Rowans lab. I lay a hand on the metal bars and squeeze until my knuckles are white. It takes a long moment, but I reel in the anxiety attack with some practiced breathing techniques that Steven taught me. With one more deep breath I prepare to walk in. Only to jump with a high pitched squeak of surprise as someone taps me on the shoulder.

I turn around to see a face that I hadn't expected to see at all during my time in Sinnoh. A boy with sharp features and slate gray eyes that match his short hair. A red flat cap sits on his head with pokeball symbols on either side. A thin red scarf hangs over a black and tan vest and a yellow backpack hangs off his shoulders. A rueful smile pulls at his lips and he scratches the back of his head. He's almost up to my nose and he's only ten. Life isn't fair sometimes.

"Sorry about that. Didn't mean to scare you. It's just... you were standing there for a long time, and I couldn't help but notice your friend up there." He points at Shaymin. "I figured I'd say hi and introduce myself. My name's Lucas, its nice to meet you."

I blink away my confusion and shake his offered hand. He seems a little uncomfortable and the action is almost mechanical. "Sasha, and you as well. This here is my partner Shaymin. Say hi Shay-butter."

"Hi! It's nice to meet you." His eyes widen in surprise and an excited grin pulls at his lips.

"So it really is true that Shaymin can speak with telepathy!" He pulls a notebook out of his backpack and immediately flips through the pages before making a note a page with a sketch of Shaymin. "That's so cool. Is it true that you can absorb any kind of pollution? I've read that Seed Flare is one of the strongest attacks a Grass a Pokemon can use. Can I see it in action? How tall are you and how much do you weigh? What's your favorite food? Where do yo-"

"Lucas, buddy, slow down for a second," I chuckle out as Shaymin makes a concerned noise. A bright flush crawls up his face and he bows deeply.

"I'm so sorry," He stands back up and stuffs the closed notebook back into his bag. "It's just... I really like Pokemon and always have. I tend to run wild with the subject. Mom calls me a savant, but most people tend to find me uncomfortable. I'm not the best with words. I tend to just talk and talk. Or say really blunt things. Or can't read a room. That's what most people say, I keep a list and those are the most common."

I can't decide if it would be too rude to interrupt again until he's already finished his speech and left breathless. "Well," I begin in his breathless silence. "A lot of people don't know how to put in the effort to see past the surface. You here to visit Rowan?"

"Yes. Today me, my friend Barry, and my cousin Dawn are getting our first Pokemon." Lucas shifts and scratches under his hat. "They probably beat me here. Dawn's been out for a while. And Barry? Well, he's very hard to keep up with."

"I see. Well then, what say you to heading on up together?" I offer with a smile. Honestly, this might be more for benefit than anything. Odds are Rowan won't try anything with the youngster around. Lucas nods his head and I step through the gate, before holding it open while he steps in. We start up the path to the lab. "Shaymin's eight inches tall by the way. Last we checked she weighed four point five pounds, just below the average. We've been working on getting her diet just right."

"Interesting," With a flurry of movement the notebook is back in his hands. "That's good to know."

"No problem. If we get a chance later, I don't mind talking with you a bit myself. I aced my exams, but it there's always more to know when it comes to Pokemon." As we approach the door, it flies open and a blonde haired boy slams face first into Lucas. I step out of the way quickly and narrowly avoid going down in the mess of limbs.

"Hey! Watch where your going!" The blonde boy shouts as he climbs to his feet. He glares at Lucas, and immediately recognition flits across his face. "Oh Lucas, it's just you." He helps Lucas back to his feet as the other boy nurses his forehead. "Anyway, that old dude is pretty cool, not anywhere near as scary as he seems. That being said, its a long trip to Jubilife, so I'm going to jet. Laters dude!"

Lucas doesn't even bother trying to get in a word edgewise as Barry takes off down the path. "You weren't lying. He really doesn't know how to slow down," I say as we watch him almost fall over the gate when he runs into it. I'm pretty sure it only swings inward. He just places a hand on top of it, then hops over and takes off down the road. "Huh."

"Yeah. He's always like that." Lucas agrees as he pulls open the door and walks in.

I step in behind him and look around the lab. It's sterile and clean, it's a little strange to see just how much metal everything is made of. I haven't seen anything quite like it since I came to this world. I see a small portion of the wall that's just brick and I wonder if they've just covered the original building material with metal sheets. It would make some sense, I suppose. A Pokemon throwing a fit against metal is a lot less likely to end in disaster than against brickwork.

After we linger in the entrance for a few seconds and take in the building, an aide finally appears from another larger door; a lab coat wearing man with well maintained dark blue hair. His eyes widen in recognition upon seeing Lucas.

He approaches us with a smile at Lucas and says, "Hello there, you must be the last trainer of the day. It's a pleasure to have you in our lab." He turns the smile on me. "You must be his older sister then. Here to see your brother off?"

Seeing the opportunity for what it is, that being a chance to have some fun, I shrug and reply, "Sure, why not?"

Lucas looks at me curiously for a moment and I return his gaze with a wink out of the aide's view. He studies my face as if trying to understand something before turning back to the aide and adding, "Sure, why not?" Lucas is the best boi, confirmed.

"Wonderful!" The aide says brightly, completely oblivious. He turns and starts back towards the door he came through. "Follow me, Professor Rowan will be happy to see you." I share a look with Lucas before following the aide. "If he seems a little gruff, its because things have been quite hectic today. Just before the first new trainer came through, there was an incident involving a runaway Chimchar and Piplup. They we're brought back safe and sound though, so don't worry. Seeing your bright faces will do him world of wonders I'm sure."

"You would be right Jensen," Rowan's deep voice agrees and I look up to see the old man on the second floor, staring down at me with a twinkle in his eye. "It is good to see the both of you."

"Oh! Well you must already be acquainted with the Professor then," Out of the corner of my eye I see the aide bow. I'm too busy trying to keep the scowl off of my face as I move my aviators to the top of my head in order to stare down the professor. "I'll be taking my leave. Best of luck on your journey young man."

Lucas steps forward after the aide leaves and Rowan pulls his gaze from mine to greet the boy. "Hello Professor, it is nice to see you again." Lucas says, though his words feel a little stiff. "I apologize for being a little late."

"It is what it is," Rowan replies dismissively and starts down the stairs. "You made it and that's what matters. Though, I do only have the one pokemon left, I hope you aren't too disappointed. That's the price one pays for punctual failures however. First come, first served is the saying I believe?"

He waves us forward and I follow a foot or so behind Lucas. There's a metal table with a Turtwig stretching out and watching us with curious eyes. I glance up at the large windows on the second floor to see the top left pane broken.

"I wouldn't feel too bad Lucas." I say with a wry smile as I approach the table. "Those other two were a bit more trouble than you'd want to deal with, trust me. Chimchar is basically Barry in Pokemon form, and the Piplup was extremely petty." I reach out and tickle the Turtwig's chin. He lets out a happy purr. "This little one seems like a real relaxed dude. I'm starting to think it's a grass-type thing. My girls are usually pretty easy going too."

I glance down to see Rowan eyeing me with an unreadable expression. Lucas takes the information in and steps up beside me. He kneels down to eye level with the Turtwig. "Hello. I'm Lucas. It's nice to meet you."

"Turtwig. Turt." The grass pokemon replies with a happy grin. Lucas reaches out and gently pets it's head.

Rowan steps up beside us as Shaymin climbs down to my shoulder. I hold out my arm letting her waddle down and onto the table. Turtwig turns to look at her and she says, "Shaymin. Shay. Shaymi."

"Tur. Twig. Turt." Its reply is bright and the pair gently bump foreheads.

"Seems like Shaymin and Turtwig have taken a shine to each other," Rowan says as he watches me through the corner of his eye. "She seems to be doing well."

"It's been a stressful day or two, but yeah. We're doing just fine." If my reply is a little biting, it's fine. I'll admit that I'm more than a little bitter. "How are you doing old friend?" The word is like gravel on my tongue.

"Sasha, we-" I raise a hand to cut him off. Not yet, I'm not... this was a mistake. I kneel next to Lucas instead and watch the Pokemon interact.

"What do you think buddy? You happy with your new partner?" I ask and Lucas looks at me from behind his hat.

"Of course I am. Turtwig is a starter for a reason. They're a strong species that sacrifice speed for impressive defense and stopping power. Also, their typing as Torterra, being grass and ground, is as far as I know a purely unique trait." Turtwig preens under the praise. "They grow quickly, learn quickly, and are versatile battlers... Also, they're pretty cool."

"Twig!" Turtwig shouts and launches into Lucas's arms. He tumbles backwards with a wheeze of surprise as Turtwig nuzzles into his chest. I burst into laughter and stand up. Shaymin paws at my arm and points towards my head. With a warm smile her way I lift the girl up and let her settle back on top of my head.

"Sasha," Rowan begins again. "Please let me explain."

I struggle to suppress the tears that threaten to spill out as I reach across my chest and grab my arm. "That's what I came here for... but, after seeing you... I didn't think that I'd be quite as upset as I am. You have no idea how much you all hurt me. You and the others... I deserved better. I spent years, Rowan, years trapped somewhere that I never wanted to be. No choice or agency of any kind over my own life. The moment that I can almost grasp it, freedom right there in the palm of my hand. You rip it from my hands and spit in my face!"

"Sasha, there's a ch-"

"Cynthia wouldn't even look at me! Couldn't even look me in the eye as you all stabbed me in the back!" I slam my fist on the metal table. Tears burn my eyes and I turn to make for the door. "I can't do this right now. I'll be back later... maybe."

"Sasha wait!" Rowan calls after me, but I continue through the sliding metal doors.

This was a mistake, I'm so stupid. I wipe at my face with the back of my arm and stroll down the path and back to the gate. I pause after exiting to finish drying my face and settle my glasses back over my eyes. "It's going to be okay Sasha... You still have us!" I let out a weak laugh and reach up to brush my fingers against her grassy fur.

"Yeah, I do baby girl. We should probably head to town and get some better foodstuffs. Then we need to head back and s-" I'm cut off by the sound of hurried steps and turn around to see Lucas come to a stop on the other side of the gate.

"Hey. I'm glad I caught you," He stands back up straight after catching his breath. "Want to come to my house for dinner? I still want to talk about Shaymin, and I see your other Pokeballs there too. Mom always makes a ton of food just in case Barry comes by."

"Huh... I figured you'd want to be off on your Pokemon journey already," I reply with a tilt of my head.

He shakes his head and lifts Turtwig's Pokeball. "I promised Mom that I would let her meet my new Pokemon. Besides I... I'm a little nervous about going off on my own. I know that I won't be actually alone, with Turtwig beside me, but it's still intimidating. I was going to do some more research on camping and stuff. The better prepared I am, the better off I'll be."

"Yeah, that's a prudent decision. I'm lucky that my parents were big on camping. It made life easier after-" I cut off the thought and clear my throat. "That is to say, sure thing dude. I reckon I owe you one after helping me out back there. Pfft... that was pretty hilarious though. We don't even look alike."

"Hah, yeah right?" He chuckles and slips the Pokeball onto his belt as we start walking. "Well, it's a bit of a trek back to Twinleaf. We should head that way if we want to make it before sundown."

"Sounds like a plan. Grab some snacks on the way out of town? My treat."

"Yes please."

I glance over my shoulder to see Rowan standing just outside the door to his lab. On a whim, I turn to walk backwards and shoot him a quick peace out. The old man returns the parting with a short wave. I reckon that we'll be okay eventually.

/-/

"It's a pleasure to meet you ma'am," I say with a small smile as Lucas and I approach the steps of their home. "Lucas insisted that I come along."

"I see..." She doesn't sound very confident in that. The Glameow stretched across the wooden railing eyes me with suspicion.

"By me, I mean my Pokemon," I pat the pokeballs on my hip where Shaymin is snoozing away. The clarification sparks understanding in her features. I chuckle and pull off my aviators to store them in my bag. "He helped me out you see, and I offered to let him do some studies with my partner, Shaymin."

"Yeah Mom! An actual Shaymin! She really does have telepathic capabilities, like I read about." Lucas climbs the steps to the house. "Sasha also has a Petilil, a Pokemon that is commonly seen in Unova and Alola, now that is. There have been some recent findings that suggest Petilil used to be native to Sinnoh back when it was still known as Hisui. No one really knows why they aren't here anymore, but there are some researchers that seem confident that they'll have more information soon."

Watching as Lucas rattles off to his mother and the way she listens so closely starts to summon forth things better left buried. I'm grateful as she says, "That's interesting to know son. I see that Pokeball on your belt too. How about you go get washed up for dinner and then I can meet your new partner?"

"Yeah, that sounds like a good idea. See you soon Sasha." Lucas walks into the house and the door falls shut.

Silence settles in as his mom turns to look at me. I shift my weight uncomfortably as she looks me over. I know that I must look a bit of a mess. I didn't exactly have a chance to shower this morning. Her blue eyes meet mine and I hate the way she seems to see into my soul. Maybe I can find an excuse to slip away. "I should probably get going then. If it's okay, I'll stop by tomorrow and let Lucas spend some time with Shaymin. Then I'll be out of your hair."

There's another moment of silence and the way she's looking at me has images of my own mom flashing through my mind. A sharp pain pierces my heart and I turn to leave, desperate to hide the tears that start burning my eyes. I'm so tired of crying.

"Rowan called ahead of you." The older woman says and I freeze in my tracks. "He said that you were a good girl and that I shouldn't worry about Lucas as long as you were around." I reach across my chest and grip my arm firmly, nails digging into my skin. "He also said that you were alone and hurting right now."

My voice doesn't sound as strong as I wish it did as I reply, "I have Shaymin, my other Pokemon. I'm not really alone. I'll be fine."

I hear her footsteps on the wooden floor and then on the stone path as she approaches me. The urge to run starts to build. "You and I both know that it's not the same. I tried to pry more out of him, but he said that it wasn't his place to tell."

"Didn't stop him before," I spit with more venom than I intended.

"I've known that man for a long time. He isn't one to betray trust lightly, if it all. Whatever happened... it might be best if you talk to him about it before you leave." I offer a tense nod in acceptance of her words. "Turn around and let me get another good look at you."

I shake my head and start to walk away only for a hand on my arm stop me in my tracks. "I... I can't." I whisper out, just loud enough for her to hear. "You don't understand... I just... I can't do it."

"How long have you been on your own?" I shake my head violently. "I've seen that look before... on my niece..."

"I... I need to go, please."

The sound of footsteps reaches my ears and her slippers appear in my vision as I stare at the ground. Tears drop into the dirt and I sniffle, barely containing the raw emotions that tear apart my insides. I feel her warm fingers press lightly under my chin and she tilts my head up slowly. Nonononononon- The words are flying past my lips as fast as they're flying through my brain. And thenwarm, motherly eyes are suddenly looking back at me. The dam that has been slowly crumbling inside my chest finally breaks and shatters and takes me down with it.

A slow wail escapes my throat as she pulls me into a tight hug. I hide my face in the crook of her neck and collapse. She holds me tight and carefully lowers us both to the ground.

"I can't. I can't. I can't." I gasp out as my fingers grasp at her red apron. "I miss them so much!"

"I know sweetheart. I know." The mother mutters out as she gently strokes my hair. "Let it out. I've got you. I've got you."

"It hurts so much... I don't want it to anymore. I don't wanna hurt anymore."

I can't do this anymore.

I can't be alone again.

I can't lose everything again.

I can't take it.

I can't...

I can't..

I can't.

I... can't...

"It's okay sweetheart. I've got you. It's okay."

"I..." Hiccuping sobs wrack my body making my words come out in an almost incomprehensible stutter. "I trusted her. She promised. She lied. I-I... I miss her so much!" I break down into another long wail as the woman rocks us back and forth slowly.

"I know. I know you do. It's going to be okay. It's all going to be okay." The gentle words drag me deeper into the broken tears.

"I died. I should be dead. I... I... What am I going to do? I'm so scared. I'm lost and alone and so... so scared."

"I've got you, Sasha. I'm right here. It's okay sweetheart."

I lose track of how long we spend down there on the ground. Her holding me and comforting me as I break into a thousand pieces. But slowly, eventually... I come back together again. Piece by piece. Bit by damaged bit. My tears finally dry into the aftershocks of the body wracking cries, leaving me with involuntary gasps and hiccups.

My body feels weak and tired as I lift up my head. The warm blue eyes that look back at me make my lower lip start quivering again and I stifle another sob. Her slim hands reach up and cup my face gently. She presses her forehead lightly against mine and gently brushes her thumbs over my cheekbones.

"Feeling better sweetheart?" She questions in a soft, caring tone.

"Y-yeah," I stutter out in a low whisper. "W...Why..." Why do this? Why me? Why care? Why?

A small, sad smile pulls at her lips as she replies, "It's a mother's duty, sweetheart. You needed one and I was here... I'll always be here."

I close my eyes and take a long deep breath. I let the moment linger a little longer before slipping out of her grasp and sitting back on my legs. "Thank you..." I mutter feeling suddenly shy, my eyes refuse to lift from the ground.

An amused chuckle escapes the older woman and she climbs to her feet. Her hand appears in my vision and she says, "Come on silly girl. Lets go get you a shower and some food. You'll stay here until you're ready to head off on your journey."

I finally look up into her eyes. "Are you sure?" I ask even as I lay a hand in hers.

"It wasn't a question, nor was it an offer. You're staying."

I can't help but grin. She helps me to my feet before pulling me into another firm hug. I hesitate for a moment before returning the hug fiercely. "I meant it, you know?" Her gentle voice fills me with warmth. "Everything will be alright."

"I know." And for the first time... I might be able to believe it.

Day 2

"I insist Johanna. It's the literal least that I can do." I say and gently take the sponge from her hand. Using my free hand a pull the reluctant woman back to the living room. She huffs and flops down on the couch. I can see the smile in her eyes, despite the pout on her face. "I promise, I know how to do dishes."

"It's not that I doubt your abilities. It's that your a guest." She replies towards my back as I return to the sink full of dishes from our lunch.

"That's a weak excuse and you know it. Relax for a while. You deserve it." I hum a small tune as I work away at the dishes. "I feel better than I have in a long, long time... Thank you again... for everything. I owe you so much."

"Please don't thank me, sweetheart." The term of endearment never fails to put a warm blush on my face and a smile on my lips. "If anything, I should be thanking you. Lucas is absolutely vibrant. Not even Dawn really brought this much life out of him. They never got too close ya know? How are they all faring out there anyway?"

I glance through the little window over the sink to check on the small group outside. Lucas is sitting beside the practice field with his notebook out. Shaymin is sitting just a couple of feet away, eager and attentive. The pair have been getting along swimmingly. A little ways away, Petite and Turtwig seem to be talking while they soak up the bright sunlight. Atlas is working away with the help of Glameow. They're engaged in what looks to be a rather intense game of tag. Jumpy, Johanna's Kangaskhan is sitting closer to the house and keeping a close eye on the ragtag band.

"Everything looks to be good out there. Atlas is determined to out speed Glameow." I chuckle as he goes for a dive only to hit the ground instead of the smug looking cat. "Though, I don't fancy his chances."

"That's one of the most determined Starly that I've ever seen," Johanna agrees followed by a long sigh. A glance over my shoulder reveals the older woman sinking into her couch with a contented smile.

I look out the window again, watching Shaymin fire off a magical leaf at a distant tree. Lucas watches intently and then returns to his notes, scribbling away at a rapid pace. An old feeling, warm and alien, fills my chest and a smile tugs at my lips. Is this what home feels like?

Day 3

"Lucas, you little brat! Where are my Pokeballs?!" I shout up the staircase. The sound of movement follows and his head pokes around the corner.

"I... don't know what you're talking about," He lies with a too straight face.

I narrow my eyes further and reply, "Don't make me come up there. You may be a big tough trainer now, but I promise you that I can still kick your behind to Jubilife and back."

"Okay... Promise you won't be mad?"

"I'm alr-" I cut off and pinch the bridge of my nose. Deep breaths Sasha. Just like Steven taught you. After a few long moments I let out a long sigh, most of the annoyance fading with it. "Alright, I won't be angry."

"I went out last night to try and catch a Pokemon," As I open my mouth to tear him a new one, but he quickly exclaims, "You promised!"

I bite my tongue and drum my fingers on the railing of the stairs. After another tense moment I clear my throat and say, "Okay... Here's the deal. Never get into my bag again, unless you get permission first. And next time, just ask me and we can go out together. Did you catch anything?"

"...No..." His dejection weighs heavy, even all the way down here.

"I'll make a trip to Sandgem in a bit and get some more Pokeballs," I glance around in a conspicuous fashion. Pretending that I don't see Johanna lingering in the kitchen I raise my voice in a loud whisper, "Tonight, we'll sneak out and I'll show you how its done. You can take that to the bank." The grin that lights up his face is contagious before he disappears back into his room.

I step away from the stairs and look at Johanna. I make a show of rolling my eyes and letting out a suffering groan. She lays a hand on my shoulder and breaks out into quiet giggles. I join in on the quiet laughter even as I lean my forehead on her shoulder in exasperation.

"I can't believe he stole my Pokeballs," I groan out.

"Yes you can," She counters while patting my head.

I hold my silence for only a couple of second then admit, "Yeah... I can."

"Pick us up some wine while you're out," Johanna mutters in my ear. "We'll have a girls night tomorrow after everyone goes to bed."

"That sounds... really nice actually. Yeah, I'm in."

/-/

Day 4

"I... I can't believe he stole my paralyze heal this time," I mutter while staring at the full wine glass. "I mean... I can, but... I can't"

"In Lucas's defence, Shaymin said he could," Johanna chuckles before taking a sip from her glass. "You'll learn quick that if you aren't very specific, he'll find some loophole or another. He's always been good about that." She does a pretty solid imitation of his voice saying, "'Technically, I did exactly what you said, mom. I didn't know you meant that specifically. You can't really be mad at me.'"

"That's exactly what he said to me!" My voice is a shrill whisper. I take a deep drink of the alcohol. It's usually about the second glass where I get into my heavier thoughts. "..."

"What are you thinking about?" Johanna wonders while reaching out to touch my forearm. I lean back on the stool and chew on my lip. Thankfully, she doesn't push and waits patiently for me to find my words.

"I'm... thinking about my... accident," I mutter softly. I have to tell someone. I can't just live with it anymore. "I... I was on my way to my first day at my very first job. This semester my course work looked to be extra light, so I figured there wouldn't be a better time to make some money on the side. It was this little flower shop at one of the train station malls. I was pretty excited you know." I pause to take a long drink. "So I was crossing this massive bridge, it's basically a tourist attraction, and as I was walking... I saw this family taking photos, right? And..."

My voice catches and I swallow the rest of the glass in a long gulp. Johanna takes my free hand in between both of hers and leans on the counter. I sit the glass to the side and lay my other hand on top of the little pile. I hold her steady gaze and continue on.

"There was this little girl right beside them. The dad was beside her and he had been holding her steady while she was perched on the railing. Then, he moved for only a moment to... I don't know what he was doing. But the little girl was sort of surprised and started slipping backwards. I moved without even thinking. I don't remember what was going through my head, or how I got there so fast."

"All I know is that one moment, I'm just strolling along. Then the next, I'm hanging off the railing with one hand and this screaming girl dangling from my other. People start rushing to help us, but I'm losing my grip and all I can think about is how much that my parents would've suffered if it would've been me instead of them. It takes everything I have but I almost throw this little girl right over the railing. It's not enough though, until the dad reaches out and catches her arm. Doing it cost me though, the jostle made my hand slip right off the rail... It was... it was a lethal height Johanna. By all rights... I shouldn't be alive."

"Well, you are. And I'm so happy that you are." She steps around the counter and pulls me into a tight hug. I return it just as fiercely. I thought reliving it would be too much but... I kinda feel better having said it aloud.

"Me too Jo," I mutter as I rest my head on her shoulder. "Me too."

/-/

Day 5

"Nooooo..." I groan loudly and curl further into the blankets. "I'm not taking visitors."

The light switch flicks on and I hiss in pain before pulling my pillow over my head. "You're in my house you know. Can't very well keep me out of my own rooms."

"Shh, shhhh... shush..." I breathe from under the pillow. "Not so loud..."

"Come on silly girl. I have a special drink here for you." That catches my attention. A weight settles on the bed and I roll towards it. I lift the pillow slightly, still wincing at the light. Johanna is looking down at me with a fond smile. I offer back up a weak one of my own.

"You said miracle cure?" I question, looking towards her hands. A tiny bottle is in one and she offers it out to me. I reach out and gingerly take the precious, priceless, wonderful treasure. "Sweet Arceus, I think I love you." She snorts loudly and I grimace at the pain that shoots through my skull. "I take it back, you're obviously a villain and trying to poison me."

"Just drink the medicine, Sasha," She sighs in what I think is exasperation. My head hurts too much to examine it too deeply. A pathetic whimper escapes my lips as I struggle to open the stupid, dumb bottle. "You can do it I believe in you."

I shoot her a glare from under my safe little cave. I can see the amusement in her eyes as she reaches down and brushes my messy hair out of my eyes. "You're enjoying this too much," I mutter, rightly and justly indignant. I try again to open the bottle, to no avail.

I give her my most pleading and pathetic look. Even using the secret technique of bottom lip pout. "Help me." I demand... er, ask.

She snorts again and I groan pulling the pillow tight against my ears. "Stoooooop... stop. It's so loud."

"I didn't realize you were so dramatic Sasha," The evil villain out for my life now mocks me in my final moments. "Here, it's open."

I carefully, ever so carefully... Don't spill it! Carefully... pull the bottle to my lips and pour the liquid down my throat. "Sweet Arceus, it's the nectar of the Gods. Dialga themselves sup upon this nightly to ease the timey-wimey caused headaches they suffer constantly. Psyducks would revolt if they discovered the existence of such sweet bottled miracles."

Johanna has broken down into hysterics by the time I finish. I come out of my safe space under the pillow, feeling much better already. Johanna wipes away a tear from her own face and pats my cheek. "Alright, it seems like you're feeling better then. I'll see you downstairs for breakfast. Lucas is excited to go out for round two of trying to catch a Pokemon."

"Ugh... come with us. Be our good luck charm," I beg, desperate to avoid a repeat of the last time we spent an hour and half of searching to find, literally, not even a single wild Pokemon.

"Hmm... I suppose I could be tempted... What's in it to sweeten the deal?"

"How is the joy of watching your son catch his first Pokemon not enough?"

"There's no guarantee of that is there?"

"... Touché..." I sigh and roll my eyes before meeting her challenging gaze. "Okay, how about... I'll cook dinner tonight? I can make a pretty mean can of beans." The challenge fades to extremely unimpressed. "Ooh someone's picky, huh? Alright, two cans of beans?" Pause. "No? Alright. Fine. I didn't want to have to do this, but you forced my hand. I know an old recipe for a mean Italian pasta salad. It's healthy, its tasty, and it's relatively cheap. Look, I'll even buy the ingredients."

"All right... I'm just about on board. Can't leave port if you don't raise that sail." Maybe I was onto something with that villain idea.

"... I'll give you a foot rub, too?"

"Deal. Its been a pleasure doing business with you." She winks playfully and strolls towards the door. "See you for breakfast!"

Why do I feel like I just sold my soul to the devil?

Day 6

"Nope."

"Please?"

"Nuh-uh."

"Pretty please?"

"Not happening."

"Why not?"

"Because..."

"Because why?"

"You know why."

"Well tell me anyway."

"She couldn't even look me in the eye Jo. I... I can't get past that. It's not for lack of trying."

"That'll change once you finally see her. You need this Sasha. You deserve to be happy and she makes you happy."

"Jo, please... why are you so insistent on this?"

"Lucas is even worried about you. If not now than when?"

"Never, I guess? When I finally see her at the Lily of the Valley competition? What do you want me to say here? My mind is made up."

"I can't believe your forcing me to do this... You should consider my feelings more you know. Imagine how worried I'll be knowing that you're out there struggling so hard. Facing these evil villains and treacherous Elite Four. But no one to watch your back. I'll just be so sick with worry and stress. I already found a gray hair this morning."

"And I can't believe your doing this right now. I'm literally giving you a foot massage."

"Doesn't matter if it's working. Is it working?"

"Your insufferable Jo."

"I'm your insufferable Jo?"

"This seems really familiar."

"I'll take that as a yes."

"Wait what?"

"She'll be here tomorrow for a festival date. Come on. I'm taking you shopping for a nice kimono or something. Lucas can take care of the house for a while."

"How long have you been planning this?"

"From day one sweetheart."

"I... Wow... that's... You're good."

"I'm a mother. Its what we do."

"So you've said."

"You know you love me."

"... yeah, I suppose I do."

"I suppose that I love you too."

"... Touché..."

Day 7

I can't believe I agreed to this. Wait... I don't think I did. Technically, if I leave now... I can claim innocence. Oh no. Lucas is starting to rub off on me.

"Sasha, come on down. You're date is here." I grimace and glance through Lucas's open door. His window is right there if I'm fast, I might be able to- "Don't make me come up there!" Somehow that light singing pitch is scarier than if she were to be angry.

I take a long, deep breath and glance in the mirror at the edge of the hallway. The very formal houmongi is a dark shade of blue, almost black, with white cherry blossoms decorating it in a precise pattern. My white hair is pulled up in a loose bun with a large Gracidea bloom facing out the side. My bangs hang in a loose frame of my face. Johanna even went so far as to put a light coat of blush across my cheekbones and nose. Black eyeliner and a dark eye shadow make my yellow eyes pop in a... frankly very pretty way. Finally my lips shine lightly with the light pink gloss, she insisted I wear.

I touch the pokeball I have tucked safely away in the obi. I insisted on taking at least one of the girls and Petite beat Shaymin in a game for the honor. Having her along helps ease some of the butterflies swirling in my stomach as I step from around the corner. The sound of my formal style sandals bounce down the stairway with each careful step I take. As the door enters my view, I see her.

Johanna is lingering by the open door and an almost proud smile sits on her face as she watches me come down the stairs. I return the smile shyly before my eyes flick over to Cynthia.

She's dressed in a more relaxed style of kimono, with red fabric and floral blossoms of lighter shades climbing her form. She's wearing a light touch of makeup, dark eye liner and a pinker than usual lip gloss. Her hair is in a similar style to mine, except she has a thick ponytail with two of her hairpins stuck through the knot. As I finally step off of the staircase, I can't help but smile at the stunned expression on her face. Her lips are parted slightly and her eyes are dark as she takes a hesitant step towards me.

I don't have any such reservations as I step forward and take her hands in mine. From up close I can see dark circles beneath her eyes that her makeup hid well at a distance. I can't help but make sharp 'tsk' as I reach up and gently touch her cheek.

"You really should be taking better care of yourself," I mutter out in warm tone. All of the conflicted emotions that I've been suffering seem to be nonexistent as I stare into her conflicted eyes.

"Sasha, I-" I cut her off with a gentle press of my fingers to her lips and squeeze the hand I captured.

I'd thought that I would be so much more upset, when I finally saw her again. But honestly... I'm just happy. "Not tonight... Tonight... I just want to be with you Cindy," I can't help but smile at the resolute nod. "I missed you so much."

"I've missed you too. So, so much." Her arms wrap around my waist and pull me close. I let her press her forehead to mine and enjoy the tender moment. My chest warms with that ever more familiar feeling one that I've only labeled as... Home. This is what home feels like.

After a long warm silence, I extricate myself and turn towards Johanna. She has my phone and seems to be taking pictures. I step forward and hug the older woman tightly. "You were so right," My voice is low as I speak. "Thank you so much Jo."

"I'm always right sweetheart," She replies with a light chuckle. "Now, you two had best be off. The sun will be setting soon and the real party will begin. Lucas and I will be along with Barry's mom soon enough. We'll make sure that your Pokemon enjoy themselves."

I step out of the hug and watch Johanna step forward. She studies Cynthia's face for a moment before leaning up and whispering something in her ear. Cynthia stiffens for a moment as Johanna steps back with a warm smile. The tension flows away with an accepting nod from the blonde champion. "I will, I promise."

"Good. Now, you girls get out of my house and have a wonderful night." Johanna makes a shooing motion. "Go on."

I let Cynthia take my hand once more in hers and lead me outside. A black limousine idles on the road and a well dressed man in a dark kimono of his own opens the door. I offer a soft thanks to the man as Cynthia helps me into the vehicle. The man helps her in beside me and I raise an eyebrow at her after the door shuts. "This is fancier than I expected... I didn't even know that there were limo's here."

She offers a small smile and I let her fingers twine with mine as I shift closer to the other woman. "It's a perk of being me, I suppose. I don't like to use my position lightly, but if there was ever a night to break out all of the stops... it's tonight."

"Hmm..." I lean against her and tilt my head onto her shoulder. "It's nice. Thank you for being so thoughtful."

"You're breathtaking... by the way..." Cynthia mumbles out with a shy voice. "I... I almost thought I was dreaming when you came down those stairs."

"I promise you, that this is all very much real." I feel lighter than I have since... as far as I can remember. I shift and press my lips to the back of her jaw, just below her ear. I can hear her breath hitch and feel the skip in her pulse. "See?" I breathe out in a dark whisper. "You can't imagine something like that."

I lean my head back on her shoulder and smile as she relaxes against me. It's going to be a wonderful night. I rest my free hand over the pokeball in my obi and let out a relaxed sigh.

An airy laugh escapes my chest as I flit through the crowd to the next stand. Ooh, this one has fresh red bean mochi. I pull Cynthia along and relish in the bright sound of her laugh. I greet the stall owner with a bright smile. "Hello! We'll take one please!"

I pull Cynthia's arms around my waist and lean back into her chest as the graying woman behind the stall complies with a warm smile of her own. She pulls out a chunk of mochi dough from a steam well and begins quickly working it into shape.

I lean my head back on Cindy's shoulder while she perches rests her chin on my shoulder. I reach up with one hand and lightly brush my fingers over her cheek until I'm cupping her face. Something about the moment feels so intimate and peaceful. I let my eyes shut and just bask in her warm presence.

I don't know how long passes until the older woman clears her throat. I open my eyes and gratefully take the warm bun in my cupped hands. The little ball is so cute in it's little cupcake shell. Cynthia then asks, "How much do we owe you?"

"Nonsense. I couldn't in good conscience take payment from such esteemed guests, certainly not our dear Champion." The woman smiles brightly and leans forward while looking at. "Though if you insist, I wouldn't mind a photo of the happy couple? My grandson just idolizes you and he'd love to know that I got to meet you."

"We'd be happy to," Cynthia replies brightly and tightens her arms around my waist almost imperceptibly.

The grandmother's face brightens farther and she digs around beneath the top of the stall for a moment. With a victorious sound she lifts an older camera, it reminds me of an old Polaroid. I put on a bright smile as she aims the camera. Then suddenly warm lips are on my cheek. My eyes widen and my lips part as a high pitched noise escapes my chest. The camera flashes and the woman lowers the device with an absolutely massive grin. I can tell that she's barely holding her laughter.

My first instinct to escape is squashed as I turn my head to see that stupid, wonderful expression on my girlfriend's face. Before I can decide on a what to do, the old woman says, "Here, you should take this one." Cynthia reaches out and takes the photo. "Be sure to shake it lightly for a few minutes."

I take my chance to slip out of Cynthia's arms as the butterflies in my stomach dance happily. I turn and look at her from behind my bangs. Stupid, dumb, amazing woman. I shift my weight and bite my lip, desperately trying to beat down the intense heat in my face. Unable to keep looking at her and still contain the intense storm of emotions in my chest, I swipe her free hand firmly into mine and stalk off down the row of stalls. The grandmother's laughter chases us down the street.

I cradle the glass of wine in my hands as Cynthia, Johanna and I idly away the midnight hour around her kitchen counter. I slump against Cynthia's shoulder and hum a soft noise into the quiet air. Lucas is upstairs and snoozing in a pile of Pokemon. The only one still up is Atlas, the little Starly perched happily on top of the counter. I couldn't resist giving him a little chunk of spicy Figgy berry to snack on.

"I can't believe he just eats those, like... for fun..." I mutter as all eyes are on Atlas, the little bird seems oblivious to our stares. It's like... hotter than a jalapeno dude.

"That's because you have an addiction to sweets," Cynthia replies with a playful smile.

I roll my eyes and look at Johanna. "No I don't. Back me up here Jo." The mother just takes a sip of her wine while sharing a look with Cynthia. I gasp and clasp my hands over my heart, "I'm beset on all sides by traitors. Atlas is the only one on my side." Little black eyes meet my gaze. "You've got my back, right buddy?"

He pauses for a moment, considers my words, then just shrugs his wings and goes back to eating the berry. My mouth opens in shock and I flick my eyes between the silently laughing women. I just sulk into my wine glass and take a small sip. The fruity flavor is pleasant as it flows down. "Well, at least I can drown my sorrows in alcohol."

Cynthia drapes an arm over my shoulders and pulls me close. "I am on your side darling," She says in a light tone. "I know the truth is hard sometimes, but I'll be right here."

The words strike a chord with thoughts that hadn't been around during the whirlwind of our time at the festival. Between the peace and quiet and the glass of wine in my hands, my doubts are creeping up my spine. I roll the stem of the wine glass between my fingers as I sink into the troublesome thoughts. Suddenly, the glass is plucked from my hands and I jerk up my head to see Johanna holding the glass and watching me with knowing eyes.

"I may have miscalculated with this one," She sighs out and I cross my arms petulantly. "I forgot that wine makes you depressive."

"It does not... okay... maybe it does," I lean my arms on the table and rest my chin atop the pile of limbs. "Can you blame me though? I have a lot on my plate."

Blue eyes flicker to Cynthia and there seems to be a silent conversation that I can't quite read. Finally the stare off ends with a long sigh at my side. Cynthia's fingers start trailing up and down my spine in a careful motion. I lay my head to the side and look into worried gray eyes.

"Are you?" I ask and wince at the hurt that flashes through her eyes. "On my side that is? I just... I want to understand. I want to believe that you had your reasons, and I want to hear them... its just... I wish you could've at least looked at me. Said something. Given me anything. Even a single little sign would've been enough."

"I-I... I can never, never apologize enough," Cynthia begins with a quivering voice. "I wanted to say something. I just... The others blindsided us, Rowan and I that is, only a few minutes before you came in. I... I didn't have time to process. All I felt was guilt. Then I finally went to talk to you that night, once the situation became more clear. I knocked and there was no answer, and then I opened the door to find the room an absolute disaster. Furniture broken and the window wide open. I thought they took you. I thought that you were gone forever."

I can't stay upset when she's crying so many tears. I sit up and pull the blonde into my arms. Then her words strike me and my anxiety spikes through the roof. "Wait... who did you think took me?"

"Interpol," She replies through shaky tears. "Apparently, they approached the Elite Four about you. Instead of handing you over immediately, they came to Rowan and I to hear more. We convinced them that you weren't the a threat like Interpol seems to believe. It was decided that it would be best to keep you in the Castle until more was understood about the situation." She buries her face in my neck and her shoulders shake with heavy sobs. "Rowan and I, we were against it. I promise that we fought, so hard."

"I believe you," I mutter as I nuzzle into her hair. We gently rock back and forth. "It's okay. It's going to be okay. I'm so sorry for scaring you. We're going to figure everything out."

"Why don't you girls go to bed?" Johanna reaches over and touches my shoulder. "You can take mine tonight. Dawn's is big enough for me."

"I don't want to impose an-"

I cut Cynthia off by whispering in her ear, "It's useless. Once Johanna makes up her mind about something, there's no changing it. I miss you anyway, come cuddle me."

"Well... when you put it like that..." Cynthia lifts her head with warm cheeks and I wipe away the vestiges of her tears. She looks at Johanna with a small smile, "How can I say anything but thank you?"

"It'd be a waste of breath to try," Johanna smirks before making a shooing motion with her hands. "Now, to bed with you. Try to keep it pg in there."

"Jo..." I groan out at the sheer embarrassment. I slip off the tall stool and help Cindy down. "Quick, lets go before she can embarrass me even more."

I pull the giggling Champion along behind me and up the stairs. The sound of quiet laughter follows us up. I shake my head and pull the Champion into Johanna's room. "Here, get out of your kimono. I'll be right back with some clothes. I... I still have the sweats and shirt you let me borrow. I want them back though."

"You want the clothes I'm letting you borrow back?" Cynthia questions with a raised eyebrow and teasing smirk.

"Yes," I huff before slipping over to Dawn's room. It's almost exactly as it was when I first came except for my bag and clothes folded across the top of her now barren dresser.

I slip out of my expensive houmongi and carefully lay it out to fold up later. Ugh, if only I weren't too tired to care right now. I pull on my old pajamas, a simple red and black plaid top and bottom, before grabbing Cindy's clothes, my actual pajamas. I return to Johanna's room and quietly slip in through the cracked door.

"Here you can change in the bathroom, just across the hall," I hand the clothes to the blonde and wink at her before climbing under the blankets. Cynthia lingers for a moment, watching me as I snuggle into the thick comforter. I raise an eyebrow and say, "If you want to give me a show instead..."

She squeaks and escapes the room in a flurry of graceless movements. I hide my blush in a pillow and giggle happily. I can't believe I just said that! I turn onto my back and grin up at the ceiling. I'm dating Cynthia Shirona... what even is my life at this point? I look to the doorway as my girlfriend pads in on her bare feet. Her blonde hair falls in a wild mess and the black tank top hugs her in distracting ways.

I scoot towards the other side of the large mattress and pat the now open spot on the bed. "Come on, cutie. I miss you..." I giggle out the words, feeling more than a little muddled from the mixture of exhaustion and wine. Cynthia complies and slips under the blankets with me. I scoot close and lay a hand on her cheek. She looks at me with that wonderful, amazing expression. I take in every inch of her face, committing every detail to memory. After tomorrow, I don't know when I'll get to see it next.

A long comfortable silence settles in the room and sleep begins to call my name. I lean closer and press my lips to the tip of her nose. "Good night, cutie pie."

She returns the gesture with a warm press of her lips to my brow. I make a high pitched, happy noise and roll over until my back is flush against her. I lift my head and let her arm slip under it as a pillow. Then I reach back and pull her other arm around my waist while tangling our fingers together. She nuzzles into my hair and curls around me. I'm so happy. I close my eyes and drift off to sleep.

A/N: Holy Arceus. What an absolute chungo of a chapter! I hope you've enjoyed the story this far. We've officially left the prologue section of the story and things start strong next week. Catch ya on the flip.
