AN: Here's Chapter 2. Some intel into Sesshomaru and Inuyasha's background.
I Do not own Inuyasha. :)
1943. 80 years before.
Somewhere near Iwaki-san. Hyakuzawa Hirosaki, Aomori Japan.
"We have gathered nearly two thirds of the kunjen. There is a ways to go, but for now I believe we have more than enough for the next couple decades." stated a tall white haired man who wore mining gear with a black colored helmet that was gracefully tossed into the beaten dirt. "And you said it couldn't be done. I believe you owe me a drink." The man gestured toward a bright smile he had grew to appreciate over the centuries with a shaking of the hands.
"Shinjirarenai! Tsukuyomaru, you all have done well. I will relay this to my dear sons as well as Jiro. They will be more than delighted to here of this news."
"Toga." Tsukuyomaru stated smiling from ear to ear and patted his friend on the right shoulder. "The success of these stones has greatly advanced our chances of protection for our own kind. I share the sentiment but, I have some doubt that Sesshomaru or Inuyasha would care for the salvation or protection of anyone that is not in relation to...themselves" He chuckled lightly. "However, I am aware of their passions for power. The kunjen have been transported, heated, and broken down into powder. Since the discovery of these substances, we have been met with unbelievable abilities that allow our own weapons to be beyond what the humans have and will discover over the years. It must remain confidential"
"Indeed. It is also imperative that our nature remains a secret. However, since the appearance of Touji and his allies. It has become nearly impossible to stay hidden. They kill with no clear motives or remorse, human and demon alike."
"Most of them are still human. Whatever motive they may harvest is unrealistically blinding and has always been a mystery for us." Tsukuyomaru added.
"It appears their motive is deprived from pure envy." Boomed a rich baritone callously. "They hate the dog-demon clan."
"Sesshomaru, my son." exclaimed Togo. "Where is your brother? There is something I wish to discuss with you both."
"Father, I do not dally about with that half-breed. Nor would I trifle with the likes of him." Sesshomaru retorted without an ounce of sentiment. His father simply gazed at his son before scoffing. Sesshomaru was indifferent, stoic, and nonchalant as ever. His father never understood his lack of emotions. He was nothing like him when it came to the matters of the heart, love, or family. Sesshomaru's mother was the very same way. His marriage and swift departure from their little family ending in divorce would have all been a waste if it had not been for the birth of their son. Toga had learned then that love carried a deeper meaning than the physical appeal and infatuation of his once beloved.
"You're impassive as ever my boy." Toga replied. Sesshomaru gave his father an infamous non-blinking stare. Eyes fixed.
A loud thud and landing was heard behind Toga and by his scent alone Toga knew his son was present long enough and due to his impeccable hearing he knew he had overheard the conversation. Inuyasha leaped from the sky. "He's a bigot." roared Inuyasha. "Ya' know I don't care to know of your whereabouts either. I have my own problems to dear with."
"What is it Father?" Sesshomaru asked completely ignoring his half brother.
"It's good to see you both. It's been a couple weeks now, hasn't it?" Tsukuyomaru stated. They were all too familiar with the disinterest of the brothers of each other. "Let us convene in the meeting room, shall we?"
The group began there walk to Toga's estate hidden deep in the forest of Japan.
"As you both know, Tsukuyomaru and his comrades have been digging near the mountains of Iwaki-san. There have been many tales centuries back of an asteroid falling to the earth centuries ago from the cosmos. It has not been ventured for some time until we decided to explore it and we then made a discovery." Toga began.
"A... discovery?" Inuyasha asked.
"Yes son. It would appear that said asteroid landed within the volcano and elements from it shattered and emerged within it over time." Toga explained. "Throughout our discovery we encountered these... stones."
"Stones?" Sesshomaru asked.
Toga looked toward Tsukuyomaru and nodded for his input. "Yes! Stones. Well, we call them kunjens. We have been on a quest to find more resources and intel on the advancement of weaponry. The humans have unearthed numerous advantages in technology and as you all know our species have diminished significantly over the pass four centuries due to rivalry, greed, envy, and of course the lack of reproduction. We have remained a constant threat as of our counterparts ongoing arrogance against the human race has made us a primary target. At this point we are thought to be extinct. We plan to keep it that way." Tsukuyomaru lectured. "Over a year ago one of my companions, Jiro, stumbled across a particularly interesting smell near the volcano in Hyakuzawa Hirosaki. After some digging near the surface he discovered theses stones under the dirt. Out of curiosity he brought it back to us in Aomori where we have our research team. After weeks of experimenting and analysis well, the stones seem to have capabilities that have never been seen before of this world."
"Father, What does this mean for us?" Inuyasha asked. Sesshomaru looked on with such interest as he once had at the discovery of his first sword given to him by his father, Tenseiga. At that time he had learned that his sword had the ability to bring back the dead. The disadvantage of that to him was that it required of him to have a compassionate heart in efforts to max out its full potential. After hearing of this the sword became immediately useless. Over the centuries he then learned the importance of valuing life and that not everything centered around personal gain and strength. He knew he still had a ways to go, but over time and with his father behind him he did realize that love was an essential part of truly becoming the dog-demon that he was. Still there was something missing.
Toga replied, "This means that we have the advantage. As Tsukuyomaru stated there is a research team in Aomori that has now become our family science lab. It's headquarters are and will remain within these walls. The team was able to break the stones down into a powder substance and extract its elements. These elements when placed within our swords, with the help of Totosai, not only advance their abilities but aid as a barrier to protect us from bullets from guns. We also discovered that something even more incredible about its abilities. It has the potential to detect explosives, fuel sources, and other threats. It has the ability to ...'communicate'."
"Nani?"
"Inuyasha, what he means is... well what he have learned is that it speaks to its user." Tsukuyomaru added. "Due to its ability to sense threats, it will give us warnings before hand. For example, once the substance is placed into an object and the object has an owner. It will assume the owner as 'Master' and protect them from danger."
"Have any of you thought of the repercussions of this?" Sesshomaru asked. "And what if the humans discovered this as well as other demons who live for seeking supreme power?"
"That is an excellent observation, son." stated Toga.
"The humans are constantly probing for more ways to annihilate anyone or anything that is deemed a threat to them. Touji is it, his horde is growing in numbers by the day." Sesshomaru scorned. "Even for a human. Anyone follows after him is simply distasteful."
"He is our main adversary. Due to his influence within the governmental arena, wealth and nobility. He has remained a constant threat. We are doing everything in our power to ensure he will never discover any of this." Toga added. "You're concerns will not go unnoticed. My sons, I must share with you that we have not fully understood all of the Kunjens power. But, one for I am sure you both will be even more excited about is its ability to... camouflage."
Tsukuyomaru placed both palms together in an up and down rubbing motion again smiling from ear to ear. "This is where it really gets good."
Sesshomaru lifted an eyebrow one fourth an inch. Inuyasha looked on completely perplexed. Toga looked at his sons as if he could no longer contain himself. "My boys, now I have spoken with you both about the potential for us to one day hide in plain sight. In the lab Jiro also discovered by ingesting the powdered substance a demon can use these stated abilities within themselves as well as the ability to appear human for a short period of time."
Sesshomaru abruptly stood from his chair and began with several steps towards the door.
"Sesshomaru!" Toga called. "Please, hear the rest of what I have to say of this."
"You waste my time Father. In what world would this Sesshomaru ever delight in such foolishness."
"In efforts to blend in with the humans, it has become vital that we keep our existence hidden. We also will have better access in the main world where we will no longer need to keep ourselves cut off from society."
"With all of the innumerable escapades of your discoveries. Are we not now capable of overcoming the humans or any of our enemies?" Sesshomaru sarcastically retorted back facing the group deeply wishing to finally end the conversation.
"That is not the goal son." Toga stated and then stood to met his son face to face. Sesshomaru almost rolled his eyes, yet he was not the man to do such a thing. "We will utilize these advantages for protection only."
"Hn" Sesshomaru replied whilst unsheathing his second sword Bakusaiga. He then stretched his right arm out to his father sword in hand without giving him his gaze. "Do what you must." Toga took the sword and Sesshomaru gracefully exited the room.
"He took it better than I thought." Tsukuyomaru stated reassuringly. "What are your thoughts Inuyasha?"
"I guess this could give me a chance to fit in with at least half of what I am. And anything that'll make my sword better works for me." Inuyasha said unsheathing his sword Tessaiga.
"Let us journey to Amori then." Toga said with a nod of approval from Tsukuyomaru.
Present Day. California, USA.
Sesshomaru peered over himself in a tall mirror of his bedroom. He had learned to acclimate himself to his human appearance over the years with much scrutiny after finally agreeing with his father's plans of 'blending in with society'. In the end he learned it only benefitted him and to not allow, to him, silly humans the opportunity to place him as a target. 80 years had passed since his father's discovery of the kunjen stones. Over time their family scientist doubled in their research of the uses of the stones. They learned to create chips that could be implanted underneath the skin near a vital vein that contained the elements of the kunjen. The chips only required the users light fingerprint over the area to rise slightly underneath the skin. Then the user needed to simply tap again to enable the elements to flush into the vein thus changing a demon on the outside to look that of a human as well as enabling protection and communication of upcoming threats against it's user. Private clinical trials were ran for years before being fully trusted by the Inu-family. Eventually a conclusion was made and it was then known to be harmless to the yokai. Humans were tested as well. Inuyasha's mother Izayoi, being a willing participant, was tested as well as others. They learned that there were no effects on the human body however, humans could still use the stones in devices to enhance its abilities. Izayoi held a weapon of her own for protection. In the 21st century, technology in Japan was for the Inu-family 'the new age' as well as in America and all other parts of the world and steadily advancing.
Toga was informed of a rise of a new threat across the seas in the United States where he and his family shared allies. Their family secrets were shared with the likes of scientists in California and Toga as well as Tsukuyomaru and Jiro became business partners with them in efforts to spread their knowledge and secretly aid local and national police forces in crimes that soon began erupting against civilians. They were also in the process of developing new weapons in case of a upcoming war or worse a new demon emerging to the light in attempts to mark territory against the humans. Toga believed those days were behind them as the world desperately needed unity in efforts to advance and live in peace. It was true. Toga longed for a normal halcyon life with his family. For his sons to one day marry and create their own families. After nearly dying and almost losing his wife in the same way centuries ago, he was tired. He had also hoped his sons did not become inured by the blood and gore of the past centuries as he had during the millennium. In efforts to gift them with more of what he felt life was truly meant for, he would fight adversity with an iron fist for his own. He however knew that threats would always find their way discourteously striking their front doors.
This threat held their own advances and Toga promised himself with some persuasion from his human wife Izayoi to protect the innocent, diminish the likelihood of higher demons slaughtering humans for possession of land, materials, or even wealth, or from anything that would disrupt the progress he accumulated of the years he made with his two sons. He was paid homage for it all. After some time his sons grew to respect him even the more. He knew his sons were independent now. And they were able to protect themselves and Toga was now confident in that.
Sesshomaru as well as Inuyasha both decided to have their chips implanted in their wrist for easy access after the trials had ended and it was safe enough to be worn. They tested the chips out for some time before it became an everyday use for their convenience.
Sesshomaru gently swiped the ulnar side of his left wrist which immediately exposed a small circular lump underneath the skin. He then tapped the area with a finger and was quickly flushed with a warming sensation that spread throughout his entire body. He then peered back into the mirror watching his purple colored crescent moon at this center of his forehead as well as two magenta stripes on each cheek fade into his pale skin. His sharp claws diminished into stubbed nails and his two sharp upper lateral incisors transformed into blunt teeth. His ears rounded at the tips. His long silver hair and honey golden eyes remained. Inuyasha's experience was the same in respect. His two fluffy ears had disappeared from the top of his head and two round human ears appeared on the sides of his head and claws were blunted as well as his teeth. They both opted to keep their hair and eyes intact, which was, to them, 'passible' for human.
Sesshomaru was a perfect demon with immense mobility, strength, and speed. He held the ability to leap, teleport, and fly at will. He was also poison resistant and of course immortal. Inuyasha being half human and half demon was incredibly strong and also had immense speed. He however could not fly like his older brother but he did have the advantage of leaping high heights. All of these abilities were to remain hidden once they set their feet out into the world of the humans. Although, Sesshomaru longed for the days of old where he could go as he pleased, much of him yearned for something more. Once Toga informed them of their needed presence and assistance in the United States to accompany him with added perks of creating a new life as college students, he figured giving it a chance probably wouldn't be a total waste. Inuyasha however was completely eager for a change in his environment.
It had been two weeks into the semester and the brothers found it relatively simple to acclimate themselves to the life of a college student. It was their fathers way of 'trying something new' in order to fit more into modern society. And in Japan many began asking questions regarding the lack of normal aging from the family since their reintroduction into society so moving around was something they were already quite fond of. University was never something Sesshomaru cared for. He'd rather spend his time perfecting his swordsmanship in solitude, which he was already a master of. He was effortlessly inconspicuous on campus, but that did not keep students away from their constant gazing and probing of who the two brothers were and where they actually came from.
"Aren't ya ready yet Sesshomaru?" Inuyasha asked after enabling his chip to transform into his humanoid form.
"Be sure to make some new friends and join in some of the clubs there at Scottman." Chimed Toga with a grin walking into the Sesshomaru's bedroom. "As many students they have there, I'm sure there are some lovely young women you've been able to catch a glimpse of my boys."
"I grow tired of your endless protestations, father." Sesshomaru sneered.
Toga sighed deeply. "Inuyasha, please help your brother to be more... sociable. His aloofness has been a boring site to my eyes for far too long now."
"Can you believe that he actually agreed to join a frat with me? There's this guy named Miroku who's fraternity president and apparently we've already made the cut." Inuyasha laughed incredulously.
"Is that so. Well I'll be...Sesshomaru I'm actually proud to hear this."
"You've asked of us to 'blend in'. I suspected this would get you off my back."
"Sure, sure son." Toga stated with a gentle pat to Sesshomaru's shoulder. "You definitely surprised me there, for sure."
"Let us depart then, little brother." Sesshomaru smirked.
"Feh. Sure, boss." Inuyasha huffed.
"There will also be a test this Thursday on the web. You are required to report to the 2nd floor, room 202. As instructed the study guide for the material is in the email sent out last week. Please be on time everyone. Any questions?" Dr. Brown stated to the group of nursing students who were clearly dumbfounded by the news of yet another exam. "Alright if that will be all, lecture is dismissed."
Rin groaned. "I called it."
"I know...you did." Replied Kagome with an eye roll."I mean it's like every single week we have an exam. Every...single...week!"
"Want to start studying tonight or... drown at the end of a cold bottle of Merlot?" Rin smirked.
"Can it be both?"
They both looked at each other giggling and then began hauling their rolling backpacks out of the lecture room.
"It certainly can. Sango asked to come over today. We should turn it into another girls 'sip and study'."
"I'm so glad we're friends!" giggled Kagome. "Pharmacology has been a total pain. I mean do I look like a drug-dealer? A pharmacist?"
"Yeah, I know. There are 'so' many medications to learn. I have no idea how we'ed ever be able to know them all it's... impossible. I'll never pass Dr. Brown's class. We have the most pedantic instructor for this. She lives to make our lives a living hell."
"I suppose we should understand it well but why does it have to be so...complex?"
"She makes it complex."
Kagome nodded.
After a short pause and exiting of the department building Kagome's cheeks shined into a light pink blush beaming toward her best friend. "Have you seen you know... 'the brothers' recently?"
Rin tilted her head in order to hide her own redden blush. "Nope. Not for a couple days now. Have you?"
"I haven't but I heard they have been pretty busy joining the Etas frat. I didn't take them for the fraternity type but Miroku does have the persuasion to trap any handsome guy here on campus."
"So you think they're hot?" Laughed Rin.
"And you don't?" Kagome glanced at her friend incredulously. Eyes wide open. "I know you can't forget that day at Duke's."
"Oh come on Kagome. Guys like that would never date girls like us. They are...untouchable. Adding the fact they are joining the most notorious frat on campus that's clearly known for it's fraternizations with the opposite sex. It would be near impossible for them to notice our existence again."
"Speak for yourself." Kagome smiled.
Rin gasped. "You little..."
"I'm going to ask Sango if she could invite Miroku and the brothers over then. Or better yet let's go to Sango's. I'm sure we all could get a lot accomplished as a group."
"You wouldn't!"
"Oh come on. It will give us a chance to get to know them a bit."
"I will literally die Kagome, you can't. You shouldn't!"
"They probably won't even show." Kagome replied with shrugged shoulders.
"Hmph. Maybe you're right about that."
Maybe.
Rin paced the floor of Sango's living room with book in hand desperately trying to calm her nerves. Why in the world did she agree to come over for what was supposed to be a 'girls sip and study'? Leave it to Kagome for Rin to find herself in any given situation to 'face her fears.' It was always her dream to become a nurse but with her timid personality she would have bombed her entry interview for the academy if it wasn't for Kagome's pep-talks . She supposed she was the yin to the yang of her friendship. Kagome boisterous personality over the years incessantly drew Rin into all kinds of different situations she otherwise would eagerly avoid. She was a shy girl by nature. Passive whereas Kagome and even Sango and Sheensa were more aggressive. She was already planning in her mind the revenge for her dear friend.
"Rin, can you calm the stress levels in here. I feel the tension radiating off you. Come sit. Have a glass now." Chimed Sango.
Rin took a deep breath. Then another. And maybe one more and sat. "Okay, alright. Thanks." Rin reached for the glass and brought it up to her lips completely downing it all in one gulp.
"Geez Rin!" Kagome said after taking a couple sips of her own.
"Are you nervous Rin?" Sango asked.
Rin bit her bottom lip. It was her nervous habit. "That obvious?"
"I heard from Miroku that he's single." Sango grinned.
"Not helping."
Kagome gasped. "What about Inuyasha?"
"Also very single." replied Sango. "They were totally into you both the other day. I think this was a good idea to get some time to sit and chat for a bit. I do have some studying of my own and so does Miroku. Everyone's bringing over their materials so this should be a pretty eventful evening I must say." Sango smirked.
"Told you Rin. It's good to make some new friends who happen to be 'very' single like us."
Rin scoffed and picked up her forgotten book and started where she left off feeling a bit more relaxed. Sango opened up her books as well. "Here we are in the ACE inhibitors chapter. They are easier to remember since most of the medication names end in -pril"
"Alright, that makes sense. I'll go over side effects and you can work on indications and then we can share our thoughts." Kagome added.
"Perfect, that works."
The girls found themselves lost in their studies and a bottle of wine later everything was flowing as planned.
*Knock. Knock. Knock*
"Let me get that." Sango stood up from her spot on the floor and reached for the door. With a gentle crack in came Miroku and Inuyasha.
"Ladies, it's a pleasure to see you both again." Miroku sang eagerly. "Where's your friend?"
"Sheensa couldn't make it tonight. She's apart of a modeling club that has practice pretty late in the evenings." Kagome stated with a gentle wave and smile. "It's good too see you as well. Hello, Inuyasha."
"Kagome...hey. Rin, how's it going? What ya' working on?" Inuyasha stated scratching the back of his head with what looked like a nervous habit of his.
"Pharmacology" Rin and Kagome they said almost simultaneously.
"Ah, I see. Kagome do ya' mind if I sit here?" Inuyasha gestured toward a open spot to the right of Kagome.
Kagome smiled with a light pink blush. "Please, sit." she motioned with her hand.
Miroku plopped next to Sango. "Where's your brother Inuyasha?" Sango asked.
"Pff. He had a phone call."
"Right." Sango glanced over a Rin who seemed to be unnecessarily preoccupied in her current studies.
"How's the law terminology coming along?" Miroku asked Sango peering over her textbook.
"I know most of it so for now I'm just reviewing."
"Okay, good." Miroku stated and wrapped one of his arms around Sango's neck. "One day if I'm in a bit of trouble, I'll know who to call."
Sango's cheeks reddened. "Right, but please stay away from the noise. There's already enough going on around here."
Rin and Kagome inwardly giggled.
"Am I at the proper location?" The door was partly opened. Rin gasped and her ears twitched at the mellifluous voice she could never forget.
"We're in here Sesshomaru. You can come right in!" Sango exclaimed.
Fear assaulted Rin and she quickly hid under the curtains of her long dark brown hair and buried her face in her book.
AN: So here's some clarity for the boys current presence in the US. Let's see if Sesshomaru and Inuyasha will enjoy a human college life and if Rin and Kagome will have the chance of learning more about these two mysterious brothers. Scottman University is a school I made up in my head. The place in Japan is a real one though. Teehee.
I like to use a little Japanese here and there to emphasize an expression.
Some Japanese Translation: Shinjirarenai- Incredible.
Kuso- Damn.
Nani- What?
Until next time ... :)
