Peeta stumbled backwards towards the others as the monkeys started climbing and stalking their way closer toward them. Each one making it's own noise as they watched the group. Just like the fog, they were surrounded and all unsure of how they were going to get away. Finnick slowly and gently pulled Luce in-between himself and Katniss to try and keep her safer than they currently were.
Luce was happy to be between them this time as she continued to stare at the monkeys who were becoming aggressive, their huffs and bared teeth an easy indication.
"Get to the beach." Katniss said as her gaze never lasted more than a second in one spot. Luce glanced over her shoulder and could see the blue water in the distance. The only obstacle was all of them getting there safely.
As if on cue and without warning one of the monkeys pounced and landed on Katniss knocking her down for a moment, but she was quick to shove it off and got back up, shooting at another one that was attempting to do the same. That's when they all started to attack.
Finnick gripped his trident and stabbed one midair and into the ground, another coming at him but Luce was fast and threw her dagger at its back sending it to the ground. Finnick could only give a nod of thanks as they focused on taking down more monkeys.
Luce's eyes darted left and right as she kept herself on her toes, trying to stay ahead of the danger. She made sure to stay close to Finnick as they watched each others back the best they could amongst the flurry of enemies.
She was about to throw another dagger when she was tackled from behind and yelped out in surprise. The monkey gripping tightly onto her hair and clawing at her, scratching her cheek. Grabbing another knife she thrust it behind her head hitting it in the stomach or at least its side. She felt it slide off of her and couldn't help but stare at it, feeling a sense of familiarity from the moment. A boy who looked as though he was only a few years older than her. The dagger, plunged awkwardly into his neck, blood running down and onto the floor.
"Luce look out!" Finnick called and managed to knock another monkey away from her as she had to pull herself out of the memory. She shook her head as she regained focus.
"We need to get to the beach!" Peeta shouted as he helped Katniss up from being tackled and starting his way there. Finnick and Luce taking the rear as they tried to create some space between the killer monkeys and themselves.
Peeta was then knocked down, the monkey mutt stalking towards him and ready to lunge. That's when a mysterious figured appeared from the foliage and jumped in front of him, taking the blow. It gave him enough time to get back to his feet and kill it.
"Who is that?" Katniss asked as she made her way over to him.
"The morphling!" Peeta shouted after getting a good look at the person, now seeing it was the female from District Six. "Help me get her"
He then reached down and picked her up with the help of Katniss and together they brought her down the rest of the way to the beach. Not stopping until they were past the sand and into the water.
Luce threw one last dagger as her and Finnick dived onto the beach and landed in the sand. Finnick got to his knees and held his trident defensively watching as the monkeys didn't follow any further than where the jungle met the sand.
Luce noted that it was similar to the fog from earlier. Both stopping at a certain point as if they couldn't go any further. They growled pacing back and forth, watching them all as they screeched and roared. Turning to look back she watched as Peeta held the morphling in the water trying to calm her as she gasped in pain. Unable to watch any further she turned away and watched the monkeys instead.
"Hey, you wanna see something?" She heard Peeta say and her ears perked up a bit, peeking just slightly.
"Look up..look" He said as he tilted his head to look at the sky, the morphling following his lead.
"Look at that, it's incredible isn't it?" All those colors..Don't worry about anything else."
Luce couldn't help but look up herself and watched as the sky slowly rose into the sky, the dark night turning into an array of pinks, oranges, and reds before the normal blue took its place. She didn't notice how quiet it had gotten until she looked back at Peeta and saw the morphling wasn't moving anymore in his arms. Her lifeless eyes staring at the sunrise above them. As Peeta lowered her into the water a cannon went off, and turning around she saw the monkeys turn and disappear back into the jungle.
In the distance and coming closer one of the ships could be heard, once it was in sight and hovering above them they knew to stand back. They all watched as a giant claw descended, picked up the morphlings body, and flew off.
Luce and Finnick sat in the sand for awhile, taking the moment to rest after another attempt on their lives. She rubbed at her cheek where she had been scratched, causing Finnick to gently rub his thumb over it as he surveyed it.
"Only a small scratch, should heal up quickly." He said before looking out to the water and getting an idea. Standing up he dusted off some of the sand before reaching his hand out to her. She frowned at him in question as she took his hand and stood up.
She watched him grab his trident and walk into the water until he was about knee-deep before he stood still for a minute, eyes scanning the water. It was then that she understood what he was doing. Grabbing the three daggers she had left she followed after him and stood a few feet away searching the water herself for any signs of fish. She knelt down and kept her hands in the water so it was easier to spear them on her blade.
It became a small moment of peace for her as she quickly stabbed forward, getting a fish right in the middle. Finnick grinned at her and managed to get two of his own. He then splashed at her causing her to laugh and splash him right back. Even if for a second, the feeling made her seem like she was home again, that there were no life threatening dangers surrounding them and coming after them every few hours.
They caught a few more fish before bringing in their small haul. Along the way Luce noticed something buried in the sand and when she picked it up saw that it was an oyster. Smiling she held onto it as she met Finnick back on the beach and helped cut the fish open, offering their share with Katniss and Peeta.
"I guess your lucky we're from District Four." Finnick said with a smirk as he cut into his own fish and took a bite from it. They sat around in a small circle eating their own pieces. Luce looked to Peeta on her left and offered the oyster to him that she found with a smile. He looked surprised at first but thanked her as he took it.
Grabbing his machete he carefully started to pry it open. After pulling it open there was a small pearl inside, the shape of a shiny teardrop. He held it between his fingers for a moment before holding it out to Katniss with a tiny smile.
"For you." He said.
Katniss took it and looked at it with a smile of her own and thanked him. Luce and Peeta shared a smile between each other before they finished the last of their fish.
Their peaceful morning eventually came to an end when the distant sound of screaming caused them to stand and look around.
"That's new." Peeta commented as they found the source from the opposite side of the arena. A giant wave made its way through a section of the jungle, a cannon sounding as the water continued towards the Cornucopia and crashed up against it. Smaller waves moving along the divided sections. As they watched they saw another ship appear and hover in the air before a claw dropped and picked up another body.
"Someone's here." Katniss suddenly said drawing an arrow and grabbing everyone's attention. They all moved to shelter themselves behind the nearby shrubbery that led into the jungle.
They watched from a distance as three tributes walked out of the jungle, two already going toward the water and waving at the third to join them. Looking closer Finnick saw that one of them was Johanna and he relaxed standing up straight.
"Johanna.."
