Chapter 3

Under the dimly lit sky veiled by a crescent moon, Lillie and I are outside, indulging in some snacks while gazing at the Alolan moon. However, as I reach for another cookie, a mischievous Alolan Rattata darts out from the shadows, attempting to snatch the treat.

"My cookies!" I gasp in horror.

Lillie remarks, "It's an Alolan Rattata... they usually come out during the dark hours."

"Just great... you know, on the first day of our journey, a Rattata tried to swipe my lunch, and that's when Serena managed to capture it. Now I'm not letting this pesky one escape," I assert.

Pikachu leaps into battle, and I command, "Pikachu, let's show 'em what we've got! Thunderbolt, go!"

The Rattata skillfully dodges, retaliating with a swift Tackle. The skirmish intensifies until finally, I decide to hurl a Poke Ball, capturing the Alolan Rattata.

"Well, not really sure what to think when Rattata is our first catch again..." I shrug, uncertain of the unexpected turn of events.

Rattata (Alolan Form): The Mouse Pokemon: Dark and Normal Type. Night after night, they sneak into people's homes seeking food. A massive outbreak of them has become an issue of public concern.

"Well, we've better warn Hobbes about the problem as well." I say with a sigh.

The next day, we are strolling at Route 1 with Trenor and Selene by our side, since Elio is now busy working. Amidst the outskirts of Melemele Island, an unexpected encounter unfolds as we stumble upon a wild Alolan Raichu, sparking an intense reaction from our Pikachu. Recognizing Raichu as a once-cruel figure, Pikachu's demeanor shifts to one of anger and hostility, memories of past conflicts resurfacing.

"Easy, Pikachu," I urge, attempting to halt the imminent clash. "Let's hear what he has to say before things escalate further."

The Alolan Raichu, noticing Pikachu's aggression, hesitates, but a glint of recognition flickers in his eyes. "Pikachu... it's me, your father. Please, just give me a chance to explain," he implores, his voice tinged with remorse.

Pikachu's ears twitch in disbelief, torn between resentment and curiosity. With cautious reluctance, Pikachu eases up slightly, allowing Alolan Raichu to share his story. "That wicked trainer abandoned me... I regret every action I've taken, every moment I caused harm," Alolan Raichu confesses, his voice heavy with remorse.

Moved by his sincerity, we decide to intervene, capturing the Alolan Raichu. We head back to Lillie's mansion, transferring our female Pikachu and Raichu to the mansion. The trio engages in a heartfelt conversation, deliberating the uncertain future ahead.

"I don't know if I can trust him," Pikachu admits, his voice tinged with lingering pain.

"But he's truly sorry, Pikachu. Sometimes forgiveness can lead to healing," Lillie suggests, attempting to bridge the divide.

The female Raichu, filled with a mixture of emotions, speaks softly, "I still care for him... I want our family to be together again."

After a heartfelt discussion, a decision is reached—Alolan Raichu would be given a single chance at redemption. Both Pikachu cautiously agree, hopeful for a chance at restoring their fractured family.

"I promise to make amends," Alolan Raichu pledges, gratitude evident in his eyes. "Thank you for this opportunity."

Raichu (Alolan): The Mouse Pokemon: Electric and Psychic Type. Evolve from Pikachu with Thunder Stone in Alola. It uses psychokinesis to control electricity. It hops aboard its own tail, using psychic power to lift the tail and move about while riding it.

Selene says, "That was weird... to think you would stumble across Pikachu's father like that..."

Lillie says, "But I'm glad everything turns out to be fine in the end."

Excitement courses through our group as we continue our exploration, encountering a playful Yungoos with its curious eyes fixed upon us.

"Look, it's a Yungoos!" I exclaim, directing everyone's attention to the inquisitive Pokémon.

Lillie steps forward, accompanied by her trusty Togekiss. "Togekiss, let's lend a hand! Use Aura Sphere to gently weaken the Yungoos," she commands with a confident air.

Togekiss nods and conjures an ethereal sphere of energy, carefully weakening the Yungoos without causing any harm. Despite being startled, the Yungoos remains undeterred, retaliating with a swift Tackle, initiating a brief scuffle.

"Great job, Togekiss! Now's your chance, Lillie. Capture it!" I cheer, encouraging Lillie to seize the opportunity.

Lillie swiftly tosses the Poké Ball towards the weakened Yungoos, successfully capturing it.

Yungoos: The Loitering Pokemon: Normal Type. It wanders around in a never-ending search for food. At dusk, it collapses from exhaustion and falls asleep on the spot.

As our exploration continues, we chance upon a Grubbin, its small frame emanating determination as it unleashes a String Shot towards us.

"Pikachu! Quick, leap into the air! Alright! Use Thunderbolt!" I shout, urging Pikachu into action.

The Thunderbolt crackles through the air, striking Grubbin and significantly weakening it. Seizing the opportunity, I swiftly grab a Poké Ball, aiming to capture the Grubbin. With a hopeful toss, the ball engulfs the insect Pokémon, but to our dismay, it bursts open after just one shake.

"It just broke free..." Selene observes with a tinge of disappointment in her voice.

As the skirmish intensifies, the determined Grubbin swiftly executes a Dig maneuver, aiming to catch Pikachu off guard. Its strategy proves effective as it binds Pikachu's leg with its stringy web, attempting to reel him in closer.

"Be careful! Watch out for its jaws!" Trenor warns, concern lacing his voice.

"Pikachu!" I yell in alarm as the Grubbin delivers a powerful Vise Grip, causing Pikachu to kneel in pain. Seeing Pikachu in distress, Lillie acts decisively, throwing her Poké Ball with precision, targeting the weakened Grubbin. The ball sails through the air, landing flawlessly and encapsulating the struggling Grubbin within its confines. Moments of tense anticipation pass before the Poké Ball emits a confirming click, signaling a successful capture.

"Phew! Well done, Lillie! That was a close one," I exclaim with relief, grateful for her quick thinking in the heat of the moment.

Grubbin: The Larva Pokemon: Bug Type. They often gather near places frequented by electric Pokémon in order to avoid being attacked by bird Pokémon.

As we approach Iki Town, our anticipation for the festival is interrupted by the unexpected presence of two Ultra Recon Squad members standing before us.

"So this… is what they call a festival! It does seem like the people are enjoying themselves," the man remarks with a tone that belies his apparent disinterest. "Not that they should! Especially at a time like this."

His companion, a girl by his side, interjects, "You don't have to pretend like you're not curious, you know? Sometimes a festival can be quite enjoyable. The aura readings are off the charts, too!"

"Are they? It's all due to the Blinding One that Alola brims with such radiance. But alas, the Blinding One now languishes in darkness, weakened and dim," the man continues, his words tinged with concern.

"We've got to work towards restoring the Blinding One to its former glory! Let's begin by exploring around here!" the girl exclaims with determination.

As they delve into their mission, their attention shifts to us, noticing our presence. "You... seem to be newcomers to the shores of Alola, fellow travelers from a distant land," the man observes, acknowledging our arrival.

"So, you're the ones Captain Phyco requested?" I inquire, prompting a surprised gasp from the girl. "You're familiar with Captain Phyco? Could you be the new recruits, Ash and Lillie?" she responds with astonishment.

"Yes, that's us," Lillie confirms.

The two Ultra Recon Squad members nod in acknowledgment before abruptly departing, leaving us bewildered by their sudden departure. Trenor expresses his confusion, asking, "No further explanation? What's happening here?"

"No clue... but I think they're also here for the festival as well..." I sigh.

Arriving at the bustling festival, we're met with a vibrant sight: numerous vendors lining the area and Pokémon joyously partaking in the festivities. Among the familiar faces, Elio catches our attention, diligently assisting with the construction work. And, of course, Hala, the guardian Kahuna, approaches us with a warm smile.

"The Alola region comprises our four islands, each guarded by its own Pokémon deity. Today's festival is our humble gesture of gratitude to these magnificent guardian Pokémon for their unwavering presence," Hala explains.

"Remarkable," Selene breathes in awe.

"While we call it a festival, it's just a modest affair you see here. But every one of us pours our hearts into it," Hala adds proudly.

Lillie seizes the moment, addressing Hala, "Mr. Hala, I have something I'd like to discuss with you."

Once inside his house, Lillie presents the Z-Ring to Hala, who reminisces, "I vividly recall the day I entrusted the Z-Ring to Mohn. He exuded composure and precision in his commands. He was a man who engaged in intense battles."

"Yeah, but he lost his memories and his Pokémon... We've been working to help him recover, but it's uncertain how long it will take," I express, a tinge of concern coloring my words.

Hala's expression softens with understanding as he contemplates the situation. "The loss of memories is a challenging trial. Yet, perseverance often leads to unexpected solutions. Keep striving, and you may uncover what you seek in due time."

"Kahuna Hala, I have a strong desire to grow stronger. That's why I wish to utilize this Z-Ring that my father passed down to me," Lillie expresses earnestly.

Hala looks at Lillie with a mixture of admiration and understanding. "The Z-Ring is a symbol of tremendous power and dedication. It holds the potential to enhance your strength and deepen your bond with your Pokémon. Are you prepared to embark on this path, Lillie?"

Lillie nods resolutely, determination shining in her eyes. "Yes, I'm ready. I want to protect and support my Pokémon in battles with the help of Z Moves!"

Hala's smile widens, radiating warmth and encouragement as he returns the Z-Ring to Lillie's awaiting hand. "Very well. I grant you permission to wield the power of that Z-Ring."

Lillie accepts the Z-Ring with a mix of excitement and determination, clasping it securely around her wrist, much to her delight.

"Man, having a Z-Ring would be awesome," I remark wistfully, expressing my desire to possess such a powerful tool.

Selene chimes in, echoing my sentiment, "Yeah, I feel the same way."

As we step outside, Hau arrives, accompanied by his Rowlet, exclaiming, "Ho! Howzit, guys? Man, I thought you'd never make it! Me and Rowlet've been waiting for ages!"

"Waiting for what?" I inquire, puzzled by the anticipation.

"Hold on... Didn't anyone explain to you about tonight?!" Hau asks, surprised by our lack of information.

Professor Kukui joins the conversation, arriving just in time. "Oh yeah, right on time!"

Lillie seeks clarification, asking, "But to what exactly?"

Kukui enthusiastically explains, "A full-powered festival for Pokémon battling! We battle in the name of Tapu Koko, pitting our best moves against one another in a friendly competition to please our guardian. Woo!"

As Hala emerges from the house, his voice carries a sage-like wisdom, reminding me of the importance of reciprocating my Pokémon's dedication and care. "Your Pokémon have fought for you, so show them the same care in return, Ash," he advises with a solemn tone.

Filled with enthusiasm, I step onto the battlefield, ready to engage in a friendly battle with Hau during the festival. The atmosphere is charged with anticipation as onlookers gather, including Elio, my Mom, Lillie's Dad, and numerous others, all eager to witness the showdown.

As the spectators gather around the battlefield, Hala, the venerable Kahuna, steps forward to officiate the impending battle. His voice resonates with solemnity and reverence, carrying the weight of tradition and honor.

"For all life on our islands," Hala begins, his words reverberating through the air, "and for those who embrace the island challenge with fervor in their hearts, we offer our prayers for your protection... for them and for all of Melemele."

He continues, each word spoken with deep respect and significance, "May this Pokémon battle serve as an offering to our island's guardian deity—Tapu Koko!"

Hala's gaze shifts between Hau and me, emphasizing our roles in this sacred event. "Before you stands Hau—grandson to the Kahuna."

Hau steps forward and says, "Let's have fun with this, Rowlet!"

"Before him stands Ash—one who has encountered Tapu Koko," Hala announces, acknowledging our unique connection to the guardian deity. I also step forward, confident that I'm going to win this.

"What?" "What a curious little thing Tapu Koko is! Hah, that's just typical of it!"

"As long as we both have a good time, then I think we can call it a great battle, eh?" Hau smiles.

"You bet." I reply back.

With a final declaration, Hala's voice booms with authority and encouragement, "Hau! Ash! Unleash the power of your Pokémon!"

The battlefield is set for a riveting two-on-two battle between Hau and me. Recognizing Hau's status as a new trainer, I opt to choose Grubbin and Pikachu as my Pokémon companions, pitting them against Hau's Pichu and Rowlet. Both sides show remarkable determination, showcasing their skills with fervor and passion.

Grubbin and Pikachu, animated by our shared bond and determination, engage fiercely in the battle. Despite Hau's team putting up a strong fight, Grubbin and Pikachu exhibit remarkable strength, utilizing their moves and strategies with precision.

The clash between Pokémon is intense, each side exchanging powerful attacks and demonstrating remarkable resilience. As the battle reaches its climax, our Pokémon push themselves to their limits, fueled by our unwavering support and encouragement.

In the end, through perseverance and a combination of strategic moves, Grubbin and Pikachu secure the victory in the thrilling battle. Hau gasps in surprise, "What? It's already over?!"

With a confident grin, I respond, "Yes, indeed."

He laughs in good spirits, "Phew... That was awesome, Ash! That was a really great battle! I had a blast fighting you!"

"It was a good battle. With this, even Tapu Koko..." As Hala begins to mention Tapu Koko, a resonating cry interrupts his words. "Ho! You heard it yourself! Tapu Koko's song of approval," Hala announces, his voice carrying a sense of awe and reverence.

Suddenly, Tapu Koko materializes before us, a breathtaking sight that astonishes everyone present. "Tapu Koko..." I gasp, my voice filled with amazement and wonder at the appearance of the island guardian.

In front of us, a Z-Crystal begins to float mysteriously. Astonished by its appearance, I inquire tentatively, "Is this for me?"

Tapu Koko nods in confirmation, and I cautiously reach out to accept the Z-Crystal. Examining it closely, I realize it's unlike any Z-Crystal I've encountered before—it doesn't resemble the Electrium-Z, nor does it bear any resemblance to a Pikachuium Z. Its unique design piques my curiosity and leaves me pondering its significance and potential power.

Hala's smile broadens as he observes the unique gift from the guardian. "Seems like you've been bestowed a gift from the guardian. You truly are remarkable. Oh, I nearly forgot! I think it is time you take this, Ash."

Then, to my surprise, Hala presents me with a Z Power Ring, distinctively different from the ones I've encountered in my encounters from another dimension. This Z Power Ring, with its intriguing black hue, captivates my attention.

"Your Z-Power Ring," Hala explains, noticing my intrigue, "a mysterious armband that can draw out the power that lies deep within Pokémon... It can bring forth their Z-Power!"

"Z Power Ring? Not Z Ring?" I ponder aloud, slightly puzzled by the variation in the name.

Hala elaborates, "We kahunas can make Z-Power Rings using stones like the Sparkling Stone that you received from Tapu Koko. Though you will need to undergo the island challenge and collect Z-Crystals for yourself, if you wish to draw forth Pokémon's Z-Power! And yet you have already received that Sparkling Stone, and that Z Crystal... It seems Tapu Koko took quite a liking to you... or perhaps it has a mission for you."

Professor Kukui interjects with enthusiasm, "Well, it's time for you to get out there and start your island challenge! If you visit every island, maybe you'll figure out what that mission is."

"The Island Challenge?" I echo, seeking further clarification.

Kukui elaborates, "Four islands! You'll travel to each of the four islands here in the Alola region. The island challenge is about aiming to be the strongest Trainer— the island challenge champion. Woo!"

Hau exclaims excitedly, "Sounds great, right? I can't wait to have a real adventure!"

Kukui nods in agreement, adding, "But I'll let Kahuna Hala explain the details!"

Hala steps forward, explaining the essence of the island challenge. "The island challenge Kukui spoke of... It is a journey to overcome your own limitations, as you travel to the far corners of Alola and meet with others along the path. It is the great adventure that children in the Alola region embark upon, along with their Pokémon, once they reach 11 years of age!"

"Eleven... well, we're already 15..." I mutter with a slight sense of amusement at the delayed introduction to the island challenge. But then again, I decide to start my journeys in the other regions first.

"Allow me to give you both the island challenge amulets you will need." Hala proceeds to present both Hau and me with the Island Challenge Amulets.

Hau beams with enthusiasm, expressing his gratitude, "Awesome! Thanks, Tutu! I'm gonna make it through the island challenge to try to become an island challenge champion!"

As the crowd disperses, Hala takes a moment to acknowledge Elio and Selene, presenting each of them with their own Z Rings. "There's one for each of you as well, Lillie, Elio, Selene. I encourage you all to embark on the island challenge," Hala offers warmly, handing them the Island Challenge Amulets, eliciting smiles of delight from the trio.

Kukui, chiming in with enthusiasm, adds, "Yeah, doing the island challenge is the best way to really get to know Alola!"

Excitement radiates from Lillie, Elio, and Selene, thrilled at the prospect of starting their own island challenge journeys. TAs we journey back home, Lillie initiates a conversation, her voice filled with admiration, "Tapu Koko is amazing, isn't it? I hope I can meet it again someday and thank it for saving Nebby..."

"Me too." I reply, acknowledging the gratitude I also hold towards the guardian deity.

Selene interjects thoughtfully, "It saved you as well, didn't it? And left you with that Sparkling Stone... even though you're a stranger to this place."

Lillie smiles warmly, directing her attention to Nebby nestled inside the bag. "Nebby... Alola is full of all kinds of wonders, isn't it?" she muses, expressing a sense of wonderment at the incredible experiences and discoveries the Alola region has to offer.

As we're on the verge of departing, I overhear a conversation between the two Ultra Recon Squad members nearby. Their discussion revolves around the recent festival and the utilization of one's full power. The man remarks, "That was a most mysterious event... A festival to celebrate drawing forth one's full power..."

The girl inquires, "You looked like you were enjoying the show. Did you want to take part in the battles, too?"

Dismissing the idea, the man responds, "Don't be silly... We are here to investigate and learn. Even with all of our technology, we cannot control the Blinding One's light... Thus we are left with no choice but to try to stop it by force! And yet it seems that the humans of this Alola can wield powerful auras."

"Yeah, what'd they call that thing? A Z-Power Ring? Its aura readings were off the chart! Do you think that's why they can control auras like that? Alola is definitely an amazing place! Let's go check the next site!" the girl member suggests, emphasizing their commitment to their investigative mission across Alola's various locations.
