She sat on the edge of the bed in the safe house in a flat on the outskirts of London. The windows rattled as the train went by. Her gaze moved from the little white stick in her hand to the window. The large black train passed by with dark brown cars shaking behind the train. She could smell the smoke from the coal that had been thrown in to run the train. The small flat had the basics, it was almost like a one-bedroom apartment. The bedroom just had a bed, the kitchen a table, a few dishes, and a small fridge. Just enough to tide anyone crashing a moment to rest and recharge with the basic needs.
She had been feeling sick for a few weeks, she assumed her missed period was due to lack of nutrition from being on the run. When they finally had a moment, and a safe house was secured for them so they could rest, they took the chance to seek shelter for a short time.
She took the chance and found a small store and bought a few things and the pregnancy test. She wanted to be on the safe side and rule out why she wasn't feeling well. But now, now she had an answer. She had no idea how she was going to tell him. She had no idea how he would respond. Was he going to be mad and upset with her? They had been careful, but maybe not careful enough.
She swallowed hard when she heard the front door creak open. "Hermione, I'm back, I got some information. We might be heading out in a few days." He spoke from the outside of the room. "Hermione? Did you.-" He stepped into the room wearing a black overcoat with a grey vest and white long-sleeve shirt under the vest. He blinked as he looked down at her and then at the white stick she had in her hands. "What's that?" He asked a bit unsure.
Hermione could feel all the color leave her face as she frowned. "… I took a test."
Neville nodded as he grabbed the doorknob of the door as if to keep himself from falling. "I-I see, umm…" He was nervous and stumbled much like he would in classes.
"I don't know what to say," Hermione spoke as she tried to hold back her tears. She wasn't expecting this morning would end with Neville being more stunned than when she hit him with the spell Petrificus Totalus in their first year.
Neville took a step forward and went to reach out for her, but she watched as he passed out halfway to her. She stood quickly, dropping the stick to the hardwood floor. She knelt beside him as she slapped his left cheek with her right hand. "Neville." She spoke as she tried to get him to wake. "Come on."
Neville moved his head back and forth before his emerald eyes opened and caught hold of her concerned honey eyes. "I almost thought you had a pregnancy test in your hand." He chuckled half-heartedly.
Hermione's frown remained as she lowered her head, her auburn hair falling past her shoulders. She looked completely defeated at his words.
He finally came to the realization of the situation. "I'm going to be a dad." He whispered out almost in an excited tone.
Hermione looked at him in almost disbelief as she leaned in and wrapped her arms around him. His arms moved and wrapped around her body. Something she worried so much about was something he thought was perfect.
The situation they were in, wasn't the best. They were in the middle of a war that felt like it was never-ending. Every time The Order felt like they were gaining traction, they were stopped or somehow the Death Eaters got the upper hand. Everyone in The Order was constantly on the move, constantly changing plans, and following leads.
At this moment, they were given a glimmer of hope for what their future could and would be as long as they kept fighting.
"Do you think we can keep everything quiet for now?" She spoke as she sat up wiping a couple of tears away.
Neville sat up carefully as he looked at her. "Our secret. We don't need attention drawn to us. Right now." He reached out and cupped his right hand on her left cheek. "Right now, we should take time and be happy." His left hand moved and placed a hand on her stomach. "We don't get moments like these in this war, we go into battle every day not knowing if we will live or not, but I promise you, I will never let death take you or this child, not without a fight."
Hermione's eyes opened as she sat up on the couch breathing hard. She grabbed her chest as she looked around the small sea cottage as she came back to the reality of where she was now. The sun had barely risen over the horizon. The glow of dark cobalt and amethyst filled the sky that was slowly losing the stars.
"A dream…" Hermione whispered as she laid back on the couch. Her honey eyes looked up to the ceiling. She closed her eyes, a tear slipping through. She stood from the couch, wrapping her blanket around her body. She was as quiet as she could as she slipped out the sliding glass door and headed down the sandy trail down to the beach. She took a seat and let her eyes fall closed for a short time, while she listened to the world around her.
Hermione opened her honey eyes as she looked out over the waves of the ocean. The sound of waves crashing against the large cliffs that surrounded the safe house. The smell of fresh salt air filled the area. The breeze brushed her auburn locks behind her. She had been here a little over a week, she was trying to figure out what would work for her. She had to find a way to talk to Neville. She had to figure out the best approach to even talk to him about everything.
She rested her head on her knees as she pulled the tan blanket around her body. She didn't tell anyone about the pregnancy or that she had come from the future. She finally figured out what time frame she was in, but she felt like this was off. When she had overheard Tonk's the first morning she was here she heard Tonk's talking about being pregnant already, but she never had a baby this earlier, it wasn't until their 7th year at Hogwarts that she had Teddy.
If this was different what else was different? Could she change their fate? Was that why she had been sent back? She remembered seeing him lift his hand for her. She remembered the necklace clicking open, but now she couldn't even get the sunflower to open. She didn't even realize the sunflower was a locket.
"Did he know that the sunflower locket would send me back in time?" She whispered under her breath. She watched as another wave crashed against a large boulder off the shoreline. She pulled the sunflower locket into view. Nothing looked out of the ordinary, it wasn't even a fancy piece of jewelry. It was just an old silver sunflower with black accents on the petals and near the disc florets also were filled with these black accents. Neville had given her the necklace and he wore a silver ring that matched.
Neville had given Hermione the necklace after she told him that she was pregnant. She remembered how scared she was to tell him. The pregnancy wasn't planned, especially when they spent a lot of time on the run and fighting. She thought he would be upset, but the look on his face. How his eyes lit with joy while she was trying her best not to cry. He wasn't upset with her. He was actually happy.
Neville didn't have the best upbringing, having lost his parents to Bellatrix who tortured them until their breaking point using the Cruciatus curse. Raised by his grandmother who wasn't the nicest. To him, this probably felt like the moment he could have the family he always wanted to have as a child. They were in the middle of the war, but for a split second, the two were happy.
Neville and Hermione had kept the pregnancy a secret. She had started to wear baggy clothing. Neville tried to make sure they always went out on missions together. The last mission though, was the one where they were captured. It was just a scouting mission, they were just looking for a Horcrux that was rumored to be in the woods, but maybe the rumors were a trap. Maybe they were given bad information, but maybe someone in their group had betrayed them.
"Hermione, breakfast." A familiar voice chimed in over the cove. The young woman walked down the sandy pathway where Hermione sat. "You've been spending a lot of time alone lately."
Hermione looked back to Tonks as she tried to pull herself back into this reality. "I'm sorry, I just have a lot on my mind. I thought I would come out and clear my mind."
Tonks nodded as she smiled. "Everything is a little different now isn't it?" She asked.
Hermione blinked as she looked at Tonks a bit confused. "What do you mean different?"
"Now that everything is coming to light with this war." She spoke sadly. "Everything feels just like it did when I was little during the first war."
Hermione looked at her sadly. The war, this was going to pick up quickly after Professor Dumbledore's Death. She would be on the run split from Harry and Ron, to work with Neville in a different area. To know that Tonks and Remus would only have one month with Teddy before they were ambushed in an attack.
Hermione didn't know what she could say and what she couldn't. She didn't know if the same rules applied just like the Time Turner. Would Tonks believe her? Would she take her words and understand that she had been forced into the past? That she had already lived this time once, but in the Burrow with Ron and Harry. "It's hard to believe, that so many still don't believe that he's back, that Death Eaters are on the move and attacking innocent people, hunting them like they are prey."
Tonks nodded sadly. "Whole families are being taken out; children are fighting in a war meant for adults." Tonks rested a hand on Hermione's shoulder as she ushered her back to the sea cottage. Hermione followed Tonks back.
"Are you scared about being pregnant during this?" Hermione spoke as she looked ahead. "I didn't even realize you were pregnant."
"Yes, I am scared of being pregnant during this, but I can't just stop what I'm doing, as much as Remus and my doctors tell me not to push myself, but if I don't then this little one might not have a future." Tonks rested a hand on her stomach. "I do more undercover and research now, but I'm not scared to fight."
Hermione nodded as she looked at Tonks smiling faintly. Hermione was in the same boat, her and Neville both fought to the very end. They knew they weren't going to make it out alive, but they fought even harder in hopes that it would save their unborn child that Hermione carried with her. He held on to the very end and saved her and the baby. He could have saved himself, but he saved her and their child in hopes that they would be spared. "You have a reason to fight, a reason to ensure your child will have a future in a world that is no longer in shambles, to live in a world where they won't be hunted because they are half-breeds or considered dirty blood."
"Exactly, someday you will know the feeling, I just know it." Tonks took a few steps up to the sliding glass door as she walked inside to Remus setting the table. Tonks gave Remus a quick kiss on his cheek. "Mornin' love."
"Looks like you are taking it easy I see?" He spoke coyly.
"Love, it was just a walk nothing more, nothing less." Tonks took a seat as he frowned. He walked over to the stove and retrieved a couple of plates with toast, bacon, and pancakes this time. "Eat a bit more today."
Hermione took a seat next to Tonks as she took a couple of pieces of toast and pancakes. Remus put a few pieces of bacon on Tonk's plate along with pancakes. "Don't forget your vitamins after for the baby. Then rest for a little bit before you go off on another journey."
"Remus you act as if I'm going to lose this child, but I promise I will never let anything happen, I'm taking all the safest routes I can and I'm doing more intel than fieldwork." Tonks spoke as her short pink hair turned to teal blue as her eyebrows furrowed.
