"It's great to have you home."
Persephone smiled at Hades as they climbed into bed that evening, battling the multiple pillows that Persephone always snuck with her when she came back from Auradon to give the bedroom a splash of color. "It's great to be home Hades. I know my mother would say my home's on Olympus or even on her farms but my home is wherever you are."
"Do you ever…do you ever wish you could stay on Olympus?" Hades asked as they pulled up the covers. "Or at the very least stay in Auradon? As the Goddess of Vegetation, it's probably better if you're in the sun…"
Persephone sighed. "I won't lie, being able to see Aphrodite and Hestia and just catch up with everything that's happened in Auradon is great. And I do wish I could talk with them more, what with the edict that everyone mute me when I'm here on the Isle, and of course I love the feeling of the sun on my skin. But I'd never wish I could never see you again, because whenever I'm with you I've got my sun."
She leaned over and gently kissed Hades on the lips. "What's brought this on? You're not usually this pensive the first night I'm back."
"I don't know," Hades told her. "And trust me, I'd rather you never have to leave to go back to Auradon. But the longer the Hooks and the Smees stay here, and the more time I spend around Jess, Harriet, and Sammy…you know Ursula's having a kid?"
"I didn't, no," Persephone said, shaking her head while trying to ignore the non sequitur that Hades had brought up. "Posideon will be happy at the very least. Another grandchild for him. That's what? Eight now? Or nine seeing as Virgil's the son of Vanessa?"
"You want to think about that now?"
"Well…not really but you know at some point it'll have to be thought of. It's not fair to deny the boy his heritage especially if he'll technically have a half sibling walking around the Isle."
Hades nodded and suppressed a small sigh. Truthfully he hadn't thought about that, but Persephone was right. Still though he needed to focus on the conversation at hand otherwise he was going to get sidetracked and the thing he wanted to talk about would fly from his brain. "And Jafar has a kid as well."
"He does?"
"Yeah. Apparently he had the sunspot last year with Jacquline. Caught me by surprise when he told me when I ran into him when I went on a walk around our territory. Though to be fair we don't exactly keep an ear out for news about Jafar. Oh and of course Gaston has his plethora of kids though he'll only acknowledge the boys."
"Hades…where are you going with this?" Persephone asked, feeling more than a little confused. She was always down for a rant about how Gaston treated his daughters but that wasn't necessarily something she thought would be a good way to wind down for bed. "Unless you're just catching me up with everything I missed while I was in Auradon? Because I already knew about Gaston's kids. In fact I think I was the one who told you."
Hades sighed. "I…I know this might seem like it's coming out of left field but…what would you think about us possibly having a kid?"
Persephone paused as she looked over at Hades. "You…you want us to have a child? You and me? The two of us?"
"I mean…unless you'd rather have a child with someone else? Would it be so bad, the two of us having a sunspot of our own?" Hades asked.
"…I won't lie and say it isn't something I wouldn't want," Persephone said after a moment. "Mother's even been asking me when I'll start giving her grandchildren. Never mind the fact that we're immortal so mother really doesn't have to worry the way the mortals do."
"I'm sensing a 'but'," Hades said. When it came to Demeter, Hades knew that his mother-in-law always wished that her daughter had chosen anyone else to be her husband. Even a mortal probably would have been preferable to Demeter than Persephone choosing Hades.
Persephone chuckled and shook her head. "There is a 'but' but not what you're thinking. But I can understand where she's coming from in a way. After all, Hercules has already given Zeus two grandchildren."
"He has?"
"He's got his son Hyllus and his daughter Macaria was born earlier this year."
"I didn't know that. Why didn't I know that?"
Normally he was able to stomach talking about Wonderbreath only if it included his former minion turned adversary Meg. Hey, you work with someone for long enough, you get curious as to what they were up to. And providing Zeus with two grandchildren would have definitely been something Persephone would have thought big enough to tell him.
"That's because you don't exactly welcome news about Zeus when we talk, Hades," Persephone said. "I believe you've said multiple times that talking about Zeus on our portal calls is a waste of our valuable and limited time together."
Hades chuckled. "You know that does sound like something I'd say now that you mention it."
"I should hope so considering you said it," Persephone said as she shook her head before shifting focus to get the conversation back on track before Hades started on a diatribe about Zeus. "Hades…is having a kid something we can do? I mean…don't forget I'm in Auradon six months out of the year meaning either I wouldn't be able to be in the child's life for six months or you'd miss out on seeing your child for the first six months of their life."
Hades sighed. "I won't lie and say I haven't thought about that. We're between a rock and a hard place with the six month deal, but we could make it work. You wouldn't be alone if you gave birth while you were in Auradon, I know Demeter would never leave your side."
"True," Persephone nodded. "Plus there's a possibility I could traumatize Zeus by giving birth during one of our meetings over on Olympus."
"I mean, that'd just be a bonus in my book," Hades said with a small chuckle. Yes, he'd regret not being there when Persephone gave birth but at least she'd have access to a health system if she gave birth in Auradon.
Not that she'd necessarily need it but their child might.
Persephone couldn't help but chuckle herself before sighing. "But in all seriousness Hades, either way one of us wouldn't be in the child's life for half a year. Meaning we'd miss so much in terms of their milestones, development…are you sure that's something you want to do?"
"I'm not saying it'll be easy," Hades said, shaking his head softly. "But we've had Olympus and now Auradon dictate so much of our lives, why should we let them dictate this as well?"
"Because it's not just us who would be impacted Hades. We're talking about a child who wouldn't understand why one of us wouldn't always be in their life….though…we do have the portal. We could make it work if we had to. Plus it's not as if they wouldn't have any alliances their own age…you said Ursula's pregnant?"
"As much as it pains me to think about what Ursula would have done with Facilier to get that way? Yeah, she's pregnant."
"…Okay, I'll never get that image out of my head."
"Hey, if I have to suffer that image, then you do too babe."
Persephone shook her head. "And Milah's pregnant again too. So our hypothetical child could at least have Ursula's child and Milah's child—maybe even Jafar's child as well thought that might put our child within too close of a vicinity to Maleficent for my liking."
Hades chuckled. "You realize that our hypothetical kid might not even like Jafar's kid right? So his proximity to Maleficent might not even be something we'd need to worry about."
"I know," Persephone nodded. "But at least there's the option you know? And if they're born in Auradon…oh! I can't believe I forgot! Ariel's pregnant!"
"She's what?" Hades asked in shock. He wasn't exactly sure why he was surprised, after all royals were going to need heirs lest someone speculate that something was wrong reproductively.
Okay, I don't even like most of my family and yet this is the second time this night I've had to think about that, Hades thought with an inward shudder. Though…Ariel's okay. At least she's not Wonderbreath. Or Beastie.
"Yeah," Persephone nodded. "The whole kingdom's all aflutter because it would be the first Crown Prince or Crown Princess for Ariel and Eric's reign. Jasmine and Anna are pregnant as well, and so's Belle for that matter."
"Is Auradon just trying to repopulate the Earth?" Hades asked. "How many royal families are pregnant?"
Persephone paused. "You know…it's possible. Especially since Queen Ella's pregnant as well along with Princess Aurora, and Queen Rapunzel's pregnant with her second child I believe. Or maybe her third."
"I'm sure she's thanking the Gods she's a royal," Hades said, shaking his head. "After all I couldn't imagine having more than three kids."
Persephone paused and looked at her husband. "Please tell me you're not planning past this first hypothetical child of ours?"
"No, of course I'm not," Hades said. "Though I do just have to point out that Apollo and Artemis are twins and they're on Zeus' side of the family tree…meaning there's a possibility…"
"Hades, I love you but please do not put it out into the universe that we might have twins," Persephone said with a small sigh. Would she love twins the same amount as if she had a singular child? Of course she would. However, the thought of leaving one child every six months was hard enough to imagine. The thought of possibly leaving two behind?
Never mind the thought of having to pack up two kids and take them through the portal every six months.
Hades smiled but then paused. "You…you didn't say 'hypothetical' twins that time. This whole conversation you've been saying our 'hypothetical' child but not then. Are…are you okay with the idea of us having a kid?"
"I…I think I am," Persephone nodded. "I mean…it'll be difficult. Not to mention hard on the child but…I think we can make it work. If we work together."
"Hey Steph, you know as well as I do that we're a team," Hades said as he pulled her close to him. "I wouldn't want anyone else ruling by my side in the Underworld just like I wouldn't want anyone else being by my side while we raise our kid. And because I'd rather not have our first child be twins, I'm putting it out into the universe that it's just the one kid. I mean, nothing wrong with twins, I love being around Jess and Harriet, but let's not put that on first time parents shall we?"
Persephone chuckled. "You worried that Jess and Harriet will come in here and ask what would be so bad about us having twins?"
"Nope," Hades shook his head. "Because the door's closed. And the girls have been taught that a closed door means you don't bother the grown ups."
"Gods bless the person who taught the girls that."
"I believe it was Virgil."
"…Do we give him an allowance?"
"Wouldn't that be Panic's purview? Why would we give an already anxious child something that would make him more of a target on the Isle? And also, why would you want to reward Virgil?"
Persephone smiled before kissing Hades lightly on the lips. "Wouldn't you want to see if we couldn't get started on making the child now?"
"Wait…you mean…"
"Uh huh."
"…Stay right there, I'm going to make sure that bedroom door of ours is locked and then I will be right back," Hades said before quickly scurrying out of bed to do just that. He knew the girls would likely stick to the 'don't bother adults if their door is shut' rule however Hades really didn't want to take the chance.
Also, he didn't want to potentially traumatize kids who weren't his. Wouldn't be a good look for the alliance he had between Hook and Smee.
Grinning as he heard the door lock, Hades turned back around and made his way to his bed. Sure it likely wouldn't hold against Hook or Smee picking the lock but it would hold against three curious tots trying to open the door should they decide to forget about the 'don't bother adults if their door is shut' rule.
"Satisfied?" Persephone asked and unless Hades was mistaken, there was a slight purr to his wife's voice.
"Oh I'm going to be," Hades told her before kissing her lips. The rest of the night was honestly a blur but it was probably one of the best nights of Hades' life.
Granted, every night when Persephone was back on the Isle was one of the best of Hades' life but this one truly took the cake.
