Chapter 20: Cracks in the Skybox

Murphy's P.O.V:

What I'm about to tell you is fucking CRAZY so you gotta bear with me here… I woke up back in the Skybox on the Ark. I had no idea what was going on. All I knew was that I was hungry, confused, and a tad horny. I looked around my cell. It was just as it was before we were sent to the ground. Was I in a dream? A coma? Why is my life a constant question of "What the fuck is going on"? Octavias' cell was across from mine. It was weird looking at this young raven-haired girl now, knowing exactly who she was and where she came from. She was doing what she usually did in her cell, sitting on her bed hugging her knees and looking scared. Kane walked by doing his usual nightly checkups of everyone's cell. I decided to try and speak to him.

"Yo, Kane what the hell is g-"

"Why are you speaking to me after dark hours Mr. Murphy? Do you not understand what can get you lashed?" He hissed. I knew, now, that it was all talk and he didn't actually want to whip me to a pulp but I put my hands up in surrender anyway and backed away. He carried on past my cell with two guards following close behind him… Nathan Miller was one of them. I wanted to call out to him but that definitely would have gotten me utterly pelted. So I sat down on my bed and thought about what the FUCK was happening right now.

A few minutes passed by and it was now dark in the Skybox except for a blue wraparound light on the second level. All the prisoners were sleeping. Some snored so loud I wanted to break out of my cell just to shut them up. I do NOT miss the Skybox. I heard shuffling around to the left of my cell just out of view. I squinted my eyes to see who was making the noise when Wells Jaha appeared out of fucking NOWHERE. He came out of the darkness like a ninja and I basically had a heart attack.

"Jesus man!" I exclaimed.

"Shhhhhh" He put his finger to his lips and crouched down in front of my cell to stay hidden. After all that was happening and how weird this all was I wasn't really phased by seeing dead Wells Jaha right now.

"Wait.. do you know who I am?" I asked, hoping someone was going through this with me. He chuckled at my question before answering,

"It's kind of hard to forget someone who wanted you dead."

"Yeah.. sorry about that.." was all I could say. I didn't really know this dude but he was a familiar enough face for me to feel more comfortable. I sat down on the ground in front of him with the cell bars in between us. "So what the hell is this? Am I dead?"

"Nope. Not dead but.. knocked the fuck out enough to be seeing dead people." We shared a laugh but then my expression went static.

"Wait. Knocked out? What happened?" I asked.

"Well.. you, Bellamy, Clarke, Jasper, and Octavia fell down into a pretty hefty hole. You should see the look on Kane's face right now. He really cares about you guys." All the memories came flooding back to me now: Kane and I standing in front of the cars checking the thickness of the ice.. the crack that started to form… Then it breaking under our feet. Wells sat down on the ground in front of me and crossed his legs.

"But.. I don't remember falling." I said.

"I remember Clarke telling me once, sometimes people pass out due to shock and not the blow. It's usually the best thing to happen if you fall from a height. You kind of just.. fall asleep and not feel the landing. But you go limp so it actually does less damage."

"Yeah.. sounds like something Clarke would say… nerd." I stated to which Wells chuckled. I hoped she was okay.

"I appreciate you taking care of her, you know. She's all I had for the longest time. I'm just glad she has all of you now."

"Wells… How do we know if we should keep going on this little field trip? How do we know that we're not chasing a city that isn't going to be there?" I asked.

"You wanna know how?"

"Uh.. duh. That's why I asked." I said, to which he rolled his eyes and continued,

"Because Clarke and Bellamy say it's there. They believe in it. Now it's up to you to follow them and have faith in them."

"Okay.. and what if it's not there, man? Then what?"

"Then you have eight of the strongest, smartest, bravest mother fuckers I have ever seen. After seeing what you guys can do when you work as a team? I have no doubt in my mind that if that city isn't what you think it is.. you guys will be just fine." I thought about what he just said for a second and then smiled and nodded.

"You're right. Thanks man."

"Anytime." He said as he rose to his feet. "Hey, can you do me a favor?" He asked, I just nodded after standing up as well. "Can you tell Clarke I miss her? And that I'm watching over her?" I chuckled and shook my head.

"Suuuureee Wells. 'Hey Clarke I saw your dead best friend and he says he's missing you. Did I mention I saw your dead best friend who I had little to no relationship with when he was alive?'" I mocked. He frowned, it seemed he realized my point. It seemed like he thought of something and perked up.

"To prove it. Tell her that I still think her favorite soccer team, 'Manchester United' sucks." I raised an eyebrow but agreed that I would do it anyway. "Thanks man."

"Why am I seeing you anyway? Why aren't you talking to Clarke yourself? I'm sure we're all in the same state right now."

"Well… it seems you have a lot of guilt to take care of John Murphy. Just wait until you see Connor and Myles." He chuckled at my worried expression. "Nah I'm just fucking wit you… kind of... you do got guilt but you won't be seeing those two." I sighed in relief as he continued. "Oh, and Clarke's cell block is a lot harder to break into because it's where all the rich folk are."

"You're an asshole. You know that?"

"Oh yeah. Being dead has its perks sometimes. I'll see you around Murphy, I think it's time you woke up."

"Man, I was just getting used to not fighting for my life every second." I said as he walked off into the darkness. I started to hear the voice of Bellamy telling me to wake up and felt him shaking me. That's when it all went black again...

"Murphy, wake up!" I jumped awake and felt the worst headache I had ever felt in my life. It felt like the Hulk was squeezing my head.

"I'm up. I'm up. Enough with the shaking." I groaned.

"Oh thank God." I heard Clarke say. I was still laying where I fell. It was cold on my back but I really didn't want to move. I didn't have a choice, though... Bellamy and Octavia brought me to my feet and I clasped onto a wall nearby so I could gain some balance. Clarke came over to me to do a little check-up. Flashing her light in my eyes and checking my head for blood didn't help my pounding headache. "How many fingers am I holding up?" She shined her light on her hands and I could see two bloody fingers being held up.

"Um… seventeen?" I answered. To which her and Bellamy shared the same shocked and worried expression. I gave them a smirk, showing that I was joking and Clarke slapped my shoulder. "He's fine." She walked off, back to a knocked-out Jasper. I wanted to talk to her about what I saw and what Wells told me to tell her but... I decided now wasn't the time and that we had to focus on getting the hell outta here. I tried to take in my surroundings but it was so pitch black that I couldn't see my own nose in front of my face if there wasn't a flashlight shining. Thankfully my backpack was still slung around my shoulders and strapped around my chest. I reached behind me to grab the flashlight Kane gave me when I fell in the parking garage a few days ago. Man, apparently I love falling in fucking holes. I turned on the bright flashlight and took in the surroundings. We were quite a few feet under the ice we were once on top of just a little bit ago. The light from Clarke and I's flashlights lit the area up in a pretty nice-looking blue color. There were rocks and debris all over. It almost looked like we were in a huge open cave… you know.. a huge open cave with old broken boats and cars scattered everywhere. A few more feet below us was the Crater that Lincoln told us about. This thing was DEEP. Like deeper than I wanna be in Raven deep. Oops.. did I say that out loud?

"I found one." Bellamy said as he crouched down and picked up one of the rifles that fell with him and Jasper.

"Did he croak?" I asked, motioning to the knocked-out Jasper.

"No. He's fine, just knocked out like you were." Clarke answered. "Thanks for sounding so concerned." She said sarcastically. I shrugged and decided to see if Octavia saw what I saw. I walked over to where she was, looking up at where we fell from.

"Yo, Floor chick." She looked at me with anger in her eyes at the nickname I called her.

"God I wish you didn't wake up." Was her only response.

"Yeah yeah. I've heard it all, I suck I know." I decided to get straight to the point. "I know we don't talk a lot but I gotta ask.. did you see anything when you got knocked out?" Octavia looked at me confused with a raised eyebrow then shook her head.

"I didn't get knocked out.. why... Did you see something?" She answered, seeming pretty interested in the subject.

"Kind of…" I said not really wanting to share with the Blake sister I barely talked to. I'd rather talk about this with Raven or Clarke.

"What did you see, Murphy?" Octavia asked. I wasn't about to spill everything Wells told me to her, maybe in time we can become closer but not with this. I may be letting more people in, now, but I still gotta keep my trust to a minimum.

"I honestly don't remember." I settled with that. "I just know it was something." She seemed disappointed that I didn't tell her but understood.

"Alright. Let me know if you remember anything." I nodded and we went our separate ways. So no one else was in the Skybox.. unless… I turned my attention to Jasper. Who was knocked out cold still. I walked over to Clarke who was tending to a bloody mark on his head.

"How's it going? Anybody home yet?" I asked and Clarke scoffed.

"Murphy, this is serious. He could be paralyzed."

"Shit. You're right. Sorry." She nodded in acceptance of my apology. "Anything I can do to help?" She seemed shocked at my question but answered me shortly after. "Can you stay with him while I help Bellamy figure some things out?" I agreed that I'd do it and sat down next to him using my backpack as lumbar support. "Thanks, Murphy." She smiled and walked over to Bellamy who was seeing where he could climb up the steep walls of the Crater we were in. I looked up at the thick sheet of ice above wondering if Raven was okay. And hoping, if something happens to me. That she can move on. I don't even know if we're together at this point. But I know that I care about her.. and she cares about me. And it feels good. My thoughts were interrupted when something fell just a few feet from me and Jasper, like a rock or something which, in turn, scared the shit out of me.

Ravens P.O.V (5:15pm)

I couldn't believe what just happened. It all happened so fast. Bellamy telling Lincoln not to worry, the crack, me trying to grab Murphy's hand but Kane holding me back.. It felt like a part of me cracked with the ice. Four of my closest friends and the man I was starting to love, which I didn't think was possible anymore, were gone. In the blink of an eye. I was standing there. Using the fender of the car to hold me up from passing out while Kane and Monty were shouting down the hole for any sign that they were okay. Warin was barking trying to help them out. It's been like this for the last 10 minutes. Lincoln was panic-rummaging through the vehicles looking for something. I knew I had to help. I had to get over the shock if I wanted even the slightest chance of seeing my friends again. I didn't notice Lincoln walk up to me until he put his hand on my shoulder.

"Raven, are you okay?" He asked.

"Of course I'm not okay. Are you? I mean our friends just fell God knows how deep into a pit of radiation!" I could see the fear in his eyes. The love of his life, Octavia, was seemingly all he had.

"They are not dead until we give up." That was all he said before walking over to Monty and Kane. But it was all I had to hear to let go of the car and walk over to the other boys.

"What's the plan?" I asked, trying to stay strong.

"We have to figure out how deep this thing is." Monty answered.

"The only ones who had a flashlight fell so we can't see that far down and it's getting darker by the minute." Kane added. I could tell he was hiding his frantic worry.

"We don't need technology." Lincoln stated before ripping a piece of his jacket off and tying it around a rock. "I need the fire creator." He said holding his hand out to Kane who looked at him quizzically. It clicked in Kane's mind what he meant so Kane took off his backpack, unzipped it, and got out a lighter. He handed the lighter to Lincoln who lit the rock with the piece of his shirt on fire and dropped it down into the hole. It fell for a few seconds before the flame went out and we heard the rock hit the ground with an echo.

"Five seconds.." Kane stated. "That's quite far down."

"A rock weighs a lot less than a human." Monty stated. "So the velocity would be different. I'd say it's about a 30-foot drop."

"Does anyone have rope?" Kane asked. "Or anything we could use for them to climb?"

"No. I already searched." Lincoln answered.

"Just a hell of a lot of clothes." I stated.

"That could work." Monty said. "If we tie them all together we could maybe make something long enough to drop down there."

"It's worth a shot." Kane said. And we all made our way to the vehicles to collect any kind of clothes we could.

We're coming guys.

I'm not giving up, Murphy.

Clarke's P.O.V (6:00pm)

We decided that it was best that we all stay in the general area we ended up in when we fell. If we ventured out too far and Raven and the others figured out a way to get us out of here then we'd all be screwed. I knewthey weren't going to leave us because we all care about each other too much.

"Uhhh, guys.." Murphy called the three of us over and we all rushed over to where he was sitting with Jasper, who was starting to groan awake. I immediately put my hand on his forehead to feel if he had any fever. He was burning up, badly.

"Jasper, if you can hear me. Don't move too much." I said as I gently placed his head back down on my backpack.

"Okay, Maya." He said with a gleeful smile while his eyes stayed closed. I felt my heart hiccup when he said that, and not in any good way at all. Bellamy placed a comforting hand on my shoulder. I put my hand on top of his but I knew I couldn't let this break me, not at a time like this.

"I realized something.." Octavia said. We all turned our attention to her. "Didn't Lincoln say that anyone who came near this place left with radiation sickness?"

"It's hard to say." Bellamy answered, "he also didn't say that the whole ocean could be frozen over. Maybe they never got sick."

"Or maybe it wasn't radiation that got them sick." I added.

"Greeeaaatt, more unanswered questions that will probably be answered within the next few minutes, in the worst way possible." Murphy piped in. "I swear, anybody with anxiety wouldn't survive being in a room with you three." After he said that, we started to hear something further down into the crater. I could almost make out…

"Voices." Bellamy stated.

"What's the plan?" Octavia asked.

"We stay here." I answered.

There were lights reflecting off the walls of the area from a fire. The voices were getting louder. It was clear now that they were walking up the crater to where we were. And the lights were from torches they must have been carrying. We had nowhere to hide. We fell right at the edge of where the crater started so all that was around us was a big drop to God only knows where, and the steep, unclimbable wall out of the crater.

"What do we do, Bellamy?" I asked, not having any plan for the first time since we got to Earth. We all turned to Bellamy as he gripped his rifle and thought.

"We talk to them."

"What?" Octavia asked.

"Are you nuts?" Murphy added, standing up.

"Maybe they can help us. We can't keep thinking everyone we meet wants to kill us." I could tell Bellamy wasn't keen on his plan but it was all we had.

"I haven't seen any reason to think otherwise, since we've been on this planet, literally everything has wanted to kill me." Murphy stated. The voices and lights were getting closer.

"That's because you're an asshole." Octavia answered.

"You didn't see the giant water worm I had to fight." Murphy retaliated.

"You also didn't see how big of a dick you were, cockroach." She shot back.

"Knock it off, guys." I said.

"Might as well get it all out in the open since we're about to die!" Murphy said.

"Shut up, Murphy." Bellamy said.

"I don't think that's possible for him." Octavia added. Murphy turned and got right up in her face,

"I don't think it's possible for you to-" Before Murphy could finish a man spoke from behind us.

"Jeez. Enough with the bickering. You four sound like me and my ex-girlfriend." We all turned our attention to the man. Well… men. The one who spoke was in front of 10, maybe 15 other people. He was about Lincoln's height. That's all I could really tell from the dark lighting of the area. "What?" He asked before turning around to his men. "Do I have something in my teeth?" He sounded like.. one of us. No accent. No different language or pronunciation of words. He turned back around. "Are you guys not gonna say hello to Ol' Trevor?"

"Sorry. We just weren't expecting anyone to be down here." I stated.

"Well, why not? Down here is way cozier than the freezing city we came from."

"You guys came from up there?" Bellamy asked.

"Yup, Chicago. Home of the… well.. not much. But it's home." Trevor walked closer and we could see him clearer in the light from our flashlights that we were shining on the floor. He was young, about mid-'30s. He had blue eyes and dark hair. It was a friendly face. But if there's anything we learned from Mount Weather, it's that friendly faces aren't to be trusted. "So. What brings you all to my crater?"

"A hole in the ground. We kinda fell if you couldn't te-" Octavia slapped Murphy on the back of the head before he could finish being facetious.

"Oh, I could tell," Trevor answered. "You guys weren't the quietest. Or the most graceful."

"We're looking for something." Octavia stated.

"And what's that?"

"Calgary." I answered. All the men started to laugh. It was very strange, to say the least.

"So you've heard of it?" Bellamy asked.

"Haha! Heard of it?" All the laughing stopped and he got even closer to us, his face didn't look so friendly now. "I'm the reason people fear this journey."

Damnit.

I know, I'm an asshole with these cliff hangers XD I didn't realize how long this chapter was getting so I decided to cut it here! Don't worry! Chapter 21 is already getting worked on ;)
