Chapter 21: A Militia

Bellamy's P.O.V:

The word 'Loquacious' comes to mind when I think of this new Trevor person. Luck-way-shus… it means talkative. Now I'm not saying anything bad about Trevor. Hell, we just met him. But what I do know about him is that he's leading me, Clarke, Murphy, Octavia, and Jasper somewhere deep in the Crater with all of his men right behind us. I was holding Jasper's shoulders while Murphy held his legs.

"Where are we going?" Clarke asked.

"You'll see." That was all Trevor responded with.

That was the only thing said the whole trek to wherever we were going. It gave me some time to observe Trevor. He was wearing a brown waxed cotton jacket that's buttoned up and dark blue jeans with brown boots. It was strange seeing clothes that seemed to be a 100 years old. In fact, all the other people around us were wearing similar clothes that we were in.. Jeans, jackets, long sleeves. It was strange.. It wasn't like the clothes the grounders wear.

It wasn't a long walk, maybe about 15 minutes. We arrived at an underground town of some sort. These people definitely built it themselves using scrap and old parts from buildings. It was lit up pretty nicely, though.

"Welcome to New Batavia!" Trevor announced, with his arms spread in the direction of the town. I could see people walking around it, some carrying… guns? How the hell did they get guns?

"How long have you been down here?" I asked. I decided we should start figuring out who these people are before we figure out what they're going to do to us.

"A little over two years… we left when our city got destroyed by the aftermath of decaying buildings and blizzards," Trevor answered. This was the first question he'd answered so far. Although the way he said it didn't sound very convincing.. as if he's hiding an important detail. Murphy distracted me from my thoughts before I could say anything..

"Sure… run away into a radioactive crater… that'll do it." I flicked Murphy's arm for his sarcasm. "OW! Bitch…" We all made it into the town and went into a building right in the center. It must have been their main hall or something.

"Which one of you is the big boss in charge?" Trevor asked, looking between the 4 of us. "It's not that dude is it?" He gestured to Jasper with his head.

"Oh God, no." Octavia said.

"These two are mom and dad." Murphy said, pointing at Clarke and I.

"Dope dope dope. So you two come with me aaaand… you three stay right in here." He opened a door to a dark room and gestured for them to get in.

"Is that really necessary?" Clarke asked.

"Clarke, it's fine. We'll be okay." Octavia said as she and Murphy went into the room with Jasper in their arms. The door closed on our friends and my sister. Trevor came over and put an arm around me and an arm around Clarke.

"Let's have a talk shall we?" He said as he led us up a set of stairs. Once we got to the top of the stairs we arrived at a door. He opened it and ushered us inside. It only took a quick look for me to realize this was his office. There was a nice wood desk at the back of the room in front of a huge window looking out to the town. There were two chairs in front of the desk. A fireplace on the right side of the room and some kind of locker on the left. It was a pretty nice room. Trevor walked behind the desk and sat down on the swivel chair.

"Are you guys gonna sit or…." He asked Clarke and I, who were just standing at the door. We looked at each other and then walked over to the chairs in front of his desk and sat down on them. They were incredibly comfortable. "Alright, that's better. Now, I'm gonna ask you guys some questions and, if I like the answers, we can all be friends."

"And what if you don't like the answers?" Clarke asked, trying to hide her nervousness.

"Well, then I'll have my men over there inject you with a little dose of… well, death." Trevor answered, nonchalantly.

"Inject?" I was confused.. inject us with what? Oh…

"Radiation.." Clarke and I said at the same time.

"Oh so you've heard the tales of people coming into my crater and leaving with a sickness? Yeah.. it's not the crater that houses the radiation. Me and my men are just badass enough to collect it from moss and insects in order to create a.. radiation vaccine that we can give to people. Pretty sick isn't it?"

"Yeah it's sick.. but not in the way you're thinking." Clarke answered.

"Welp!" Trevor slapped his hands on his knees loudly. "Let's get started, shall we? First question: what're your names?"

"I'm Clarke. Clarke Griffin." She stated, politely.

"Bellamy Blake." That was all I said, probably in a less happy tone. I don't like people. Especially new people who we know nothing about.

"Alright, Clarke and Bellamy. Next question: why the FUCK are you guys speaking English?"

"It's the only language we know." I answered.

"No no.. everyone here speaks that gross-ass tree people language. And when they speak English they have an accent. So how do you guys speak fluent English like us? We've never come across anyone who speaks like that." He said. Clarke answered now.

"Well, we didn't grow up down here… we grew up in space. On the Ark." For the first time in a while, Trevor was silent. He had a raised eyebrow and looked back and forth between Clarke and I. He opened a drawer behind his desk and pulled out a small plastic replica of the Ark and placed it on the table with a small thud.

"The Ark station?" He asked. Clarke and I were very confused.

"Yeah.. that's it. How do you know about it?" I asked, looking at the model of the metal tube that I called home for 23 years.

"Let's just say.. If you're telling the truth. We're all not so different after all…" Trevor answered.

Kane's P.O.V (6:00 pm)

Here goes nothing… hello.. reader? It's not like anyone will ever read this anyway. Let's just restart.

Ahem. When I first started this trip I was under the assumption that we were going to be headed on a 2-week journey to a safe place that Clarke and Bellamy had seen on a computer monitor at Mount Weather. Fast forward a few days and I come to find out they were just trying to escape their guilt and find a place to start a new life. I understood and respected their plan to keep pushing forward to this city of 'Calgary'. The old Marcus Kane would have tied both Clarke and Bellamy up and brought them back to Arkadia by force for going on such a mission. The old Marcus Kane would have seen it as desertion. Well, the old Marcus Kane was a loser… as John would say… Now I respect Bellamy and Clarke unequivocally for their bravery and effort, not only in finding a better place for them but, finding a better place for the whole of Arkadia if this city really is what Lincoln says it is. These kids have become my sole responsibility. I will never let anything happen to them and I will strike down anyone who hurts them or gets in between them and me. That is why I have found myself tying up old jackets and pants in order to create a rope for Clarke, Bellamy, Jasper, Murphy, and Octavia... they must be okay.. they have to be.

"Alright! Is that all the clothes?" Raven asked Monty, who was at the back of the car throwing us all the clothes he could find.

"Yeah! That's it." He came over to us with the wolf following him and inspected the makeshift rope. "Will it be enough?"

"Only one way to find out. Tie it somewhere on the car." I said as I went over to the buggy and grabbed my rifle and backpack with all my gear in it. I unzipped the bag and took out my Guard jacket from the Ark. I'm going down there for those kids.. and the Guard jackets come with, little but, some armor protection. I took off my white snow jacket and changed into the black Guard one. I slung the pack over one of my shoulders and headed over to the hole.

"What if they don't see the rope? Or what if they're all too injured to climb it?" Monty asked. I saw that Lincoln had a worried look on his face that he was trying, but failing, to hide. Raven shared the same look.

"That's why I'm going down there." I stated, as I put a magazine in my rifle and cocked it back.

"I'm going too." Lincoln stated without hesitation. I nodded to him in assimilation.

"Are you guys nuts?" Raven asked. "We have no clue what's down there. What about the radiation?"

"Raven. If they're hurt the only way we will ever see them again is if we go down there and extract them from the crater. Like Monty said, the drop was long but survivable. Which means they must be alive. You two stay up here and look after each other and the vehicles." I took out a pistol from my backpack and handed it to Raven with an extra magazine.

"Here," Raven said with wet eyes as she handed me the phone Murphy had found. "In case you get lost and need to find your way back to us."

"What if we lose you guys too?" Monty asked, after coming back from tying the rope somewhere on the underside of the car. I looked down at the two worried pairs of eyes in front of me. The two smartest kids I have ever known and probably will ever know. I put a hand on each of their shoulders and smiled.

"You're good kids. If we don't come back by sunrise, you go. Find Calgary or go back to Arkadia. Either way, I know without a doubt you'll get through anything. You're smart. Brave. The most skilled fighters I have ever had the pleasure of meeting." The wolf barked at me after I said that. "Yes, you too Warin." I chuckled. Raven and Monty looked at me with watering eyes and before I knew it they were hugging me. I put my arms around them and relished the embrace as it could possibly be the last embrace I ever have. I rubbed their backs and broke from the hug. I picked up my rifle and turned to Lincoln, who was hugging Raven, saying his farewells to the two. I grabbed the rope and looked down into the dark abyss below. This was not going to be fun. With a nod from Lincoln, I put my legs in the hole.. then my torso.. then my whole body, and I began my descent into the crater.

Hang in there, kids. I'm on my way.

Clarke's P.O.V:

Bellamy and I just revealed that we were born and lived on the Ark before coming down to earth. Trevor seemed very intrigued with this revelation and we weren't sure why.

"Prove it." That was all he said as he relaxed back into his chair causing it to make a creaking sound. He was tapping his fingertips together. I looked at Bellamy. We had no clue how we could prove it but it seemed like something clicked in Bell's mind. He grabbed his backpack which was on the ground next to his chair and put it on his lap. He unzipped it and pulled out the flashlight that Murphy gave him a few moments ago, the one Murphy got from Kane when he fell in the hole. It was a flashlight from the Ark and it had the symbol plastered across the side of it with the words "The Ark". Bellamy placed it in front of Trevor on the table and sat back in his chair. Trevor inspected the flashlight and wore a surprised look on his face. He then seemed to suddenly snap out of it and looked back at Bellamy and I. "I need more proof." Was all he said. If only I didn't change out of my prisoner outfit from when we first landed… Bellamy, on the other hand, seemed to have already found a way to prove it.

"There are more of us. Above ground. If you help us get to them we have someone with us who has a full guard uniform in his backpack. The guards of the Ark were-"

"I know who they are." Trevor said. He stood up and walked over to the window and looked out, gazing at the town. "I can trust you guys? You're not gonna fuck me in the ass if I help you?" Bellamy looked confused at Trevor's choice of words.

"Uh.. no.. we wouldn't.." was all he said. Trevor turned around now.

"Wouldn't what? I need to hear you say it." It seems to me that Trevor's new favorite thing to do is piss off Bellamy. Bell sighed in annoyance and then said, reluctantly.

"We won't.. fuck you in the ass…"

"Good! That's what I like to hear!" Trevor chuckled and then walked over to us. "Let's get you back to your friends." With that, we stood up and headed out of the office. We got to the room that was holding Octavia, Jasper, and Murphy.

"Open it up, Grant." Trevor ordered the guard outside of the door. He was holding a rifle in his hands that looked older than the Ark itself. Grant nodded and turned to the door with jingling keys. Once the door was open I could see my three friends in a sort of laundry room. Murphy hopped off of the washing machine he was sitting on and walked up to me.

"Executing us already? What'd Bellamy say that killed us?" He said with a smirk.

"I told them how annoying you are." Bellamy countered back at him. Murphy's smirk disappeared and a grin formed on my face. It makes me so happy seeing Bellamy joking around more.

"Jasper woke up" Octavia said, kneeling down next to a confused-looking Jasper who was still laying on his back. "Don't worry, we explained everything to him." Jasper's eyes shifted to me, now. He looked at me in a way that he has never looked at me before. Almost.. apologetic. Bellamy's voice made me turn away from him.

"Good. Are you okay Jasper?" He asked. Jasper just nodded.

"Trevor said he'd take us to Kane and the others." I told them.

"Good. Let's get the hell out of here." Murphy said, walking out of the room to the main entrance.

"You don't like my town, John?" Trevor asked with a glare.

"Oh you know, as much as I love the scavenger aesthetics and random rocks hitting my head from the ceiling. I'd say I wouldn't give this place a good review on TripAdvisor." Murphy answered. Bellamy stepped on the back of Murphy's shoe from behind him to let him know he should shut the hell up.

We trekked onto the hole where we originally fell through to get into the crater. About 25 of Trevors people were with us, most carrying guns. About 10 minutes into the walk we heard the sound of.. music?

"Is that…" Before Jasper could finish his question Murphy did it for him.

"'Fishin' In the Dark' by Nitty Gritty Dirt Band?"

"We haven't heard actual music in years.." an elderly man of Trevors' people stated from behind us.

"The phone…" Bellamy and I said at the same time.

"You people just get more and more confusing.." Trevor stated. "You and me go fishing in the dark!" He sang.

The music got louder and louder from in front of us until someone turned a corner. It was Kane.. with a shocked face towards the big militia behind us. He was wearing his Guard jacket which made me look at Trevor's reaction to it. Trevor seemed.. almost angry at the site of it. Kane took the phone out of his pocket and paused the music

"Um… Lincoln.." He stated and we heard running from behind him. Lincoln appeared around the corner next to Kane and Octavia immediately ran over to embrace him. Bellamy and I walked over to Kane. Bellamy clasped Kane's forearm as Kane did the same to Bellamy, still wearing a confused look in the army's direction.

"I'll explain later. Let's just get back to the others." I promised, then Trevor spoke up.

"Then you can explain to me where you got that Guard jacket."

"I got it from the Ar-" Before Kane could finish I nudged him forward.

"Let's just get back to the cars first."

"Cars?" Trevor asked. "You're lying.."

"You gotta start believing us, man. We're pretty lucky people." Murphy said.

"Okay, this I gotta see." Trevor said taking the lead and going down a tunnel we haven't been before.

"Isn't the hole back that way?" Octavia asked.

"We're heading for an exit.. not the hole you guys fell through."

We made it out of the Crater through a sort of, dug-out ramp to the top. It was very narrow so we all had to go up in a single file. Once we made it outside back on top of the frozen ocean it made me almost miss the warmth of the underground.

We weren't far from where we parked the cars. I turned in the direction of where they should be and saw lights.. right on the surface of the ice.. they weren't lights, however.. they were torches.. We all walked closer and to our horror, we saw them.. Azgeda.. the Ice Nation. Surrounding the cars where Raven and Monty were left. They were facing right at us as if they knew where we would come from. We walked faster and faster until we were only about 30 feet away from them. Roan was in front with a grin.

"So… you think you can just kill my men and not get away with it?" He asked, the flicker of a torch lighting up his face bright orange. Two of his men moved behind him to reveal Raven and Monty on their knees with their hands tied behind their backs. I heard Murphy and Bellamy shift behind me in anger.

"We have to stop them, Clarke." Murphy said.

Roan moved closer, now. Taking slow steps with a confused look on his face. His eyes were on Trevor the whole time.

"Huh... Trevor White." Roan stated.

"Roan.." Trevor replied.

"So this is where you've been this whole time? I thought Lexa was telling the truth when she-"

"Look how about you let them go, huh old friend?" Trevor interrupted what Roan was going to say but after hearing the name Lexa I know I'll remember to ask him about it later…

"This is none of your people's business." Roan shouted

"Is this one of those things where you want to kill these guys to gain their strength?" Trevor asked in a bored tone.

"Well, it was. But now I think I should finish what Lexa should have and kill you!" Roans Archers pulled back their arrows as Trevor's people cocked their guns.

Here we go again.

Fuck sakes.
