Mercedes opened her eyes, adjusting them to the light, along with her surroundings. She turned her head when she heard beeping, seeing that it was the IV machine, she glanced down at her hand and found that she was hooked up. She grunted lowly before turning her head to the side, finding those green eyes on her. She felt her own close when he kissed her forehead then came down and pressed a lingering one on her lips. Yep, she was dreaming. This was a dream. It had to be.
"You scared me." Sam whispered as his forehead leaned against hers, wiping the tear that slid from her eye, answering that silent question, "You got overwhelmed and your blood pressure got really high, causing you to faint. Thank God I caught you before you hit the floor."
"You know me and the hospital are besties lately." She joked in reference to her attack last year, now recently with this pregnancy, but stopped when she noticed the seriousness and legit worry on his face, "I'm sorry."
"That's not funny, Mercedes." He took a deep breath before glancing back as the knocks on the door sounded off, followed by it opening. He watched the doctor come in and stand next to her as the nurse pulled in an ultrasound machine, while the other came to take her blood pressure.
"Mercedes." She put on some gloves before giving the girl a knowing look. Her eyes went over to Sam, who was standing on the other side of the bed, "And who do we have here?" She asked as she looked at him with a smile, "I'm Dr. Griffey, Mercedes' OBGYN."
"Sam, I'm the father."
"Well, it's certainly nice to meet you, Sam." She responded as she looked at the machine when it beeped, indicating that her blood pressure was done.
"140/78. Way, way better."
"Dr. Malone told me it was 190/100 when you came in the ER. So, because of that alone, I'm restricting you. Bed rest, strictly enforced for the next month. That means no work, no errands, nothing. Understand?"
"Yes." Mercedes responded as she moved the cover back, along with her hospital gown so she could expose her stomach. She squeezed the gel on her, causing her to wince at how cold it was.
Sam watched as she took the probe and ran it across Mercedes' stomach. His eyes left that and went to the screen when he saw something. He put his hand over his month when the volume was turned up so they can hear the heartbeat. Holy shit. There was really a baby there. He didn't know what he was expecting but this left him in awe.
"85 beats per minutes. Your little girl or boy is doing great to be almost ten weeks." She commented as she moved the probe around some more before nodding her head, "Everything looks fine, but the rest is definitely needed. We don't need stress to take a toll over you because this could've ended on a different note."
The nurse wrote in her chart before she spoke up, "Dr. Malone wants to monitor you overnight, so you may be release in the afternoon of tomorrow."
"And I'll be back before you leave to double check on baby. In the mean time, rest and avoid anything that stresses you out, Mercedes."
"I will, thank you."
Sam waited until they both left out before he turned back to Mercedes, watching as she stared back at him, "No matter what we are going through, I still want you to be honest with me. That hasn't stopped you before, so I don't know why you felt that you needed to keep this from me." He said as he looked at her, shaking his head, "It doesn't matter now, I only want to make sure that you two are okay."
"I want you to understand why. I was just scared and I know that's not an excuse but I was. Scared of how you'd react, scared of what you'd want to me to do…..I just didn't know, Sam. I know that you always said you didn't want kids, and the stuff that happened with….I'm sorry."
"There's no one else I'd rather be the mother my child to be but you." He whispered as he lifted her hands up and pressed a kiss to her them, "I love you so much and I'm sorry, so sorry for running when you were only trying help me….help us. That's why from this day forward, I'm making a promise to you that I will get the help I need because I not only want to be a better me, but I want to be a hella better father than mine was."
The tears slid from her eyes as she leaned up and hugged him. That's all she wanted was for him to get help.
The next afternoon, the silence had surrounded the room for a good ten minutes before he finally spoke up, him staring at his wife in complete disbelief. He hasn't even had his afternoon coffee so that he could process this any further, nor has he moved out the bed, "She's pregnant?"
"Mhm."
"When did you find out?"
"She just recently told me but I've been knowing for awhile. A mother's intuition is a beast."
"For my sanity, I hope to God it's not Angelo's. He been around too much these past couple of months."
"They're just friends, Henry but even if he was, what were you going to do about it? It wouldn't change the fact that you will have another grandchild." Ruby told her husband as she crossed her arms and raised a brow once she went and stood in front of the tv, "Everyone is worthy of a second chance. If Mercedes can make amends, I believe you can too."
Henry scoffed, "How? He got my baby girl pregnant while she was still in high school."
"It takes two to tango." Ruby watched as he looked at her, prompting her to shrug her shoulders, "I'm not sugarcoating anything. Mercedes is just as responsible as he was. They both made the decision to have unprotected sex and Poppy was the outcome."
Henry scoffed again before sighing, "Does Sam even know?"
"I'm sure he does now since he is in our kitchen cooking."
Poppy woke up almost immediately when she smelt cinnamon. Looking at the clock, she noticed that it was after 12 and she was confused. She moved the cover from her body and went to the bathroom to brush her teeth. When she finished, she placed her robe on before opening the door and headed down stairs and in the direction of the noise. She knew that it wasn't her grandmother nor grandpa because it was takeout Saturday, meaning they didn't cook unless it was a special occasion. When she got to the threshold, to her surprise, she found someone she definitely wasn't expecting, "Sam?"
Sam turned around when he heard his name, giving the girl a small smile, "Good morning, Poppy. Don't worry, I didn't break in. Your grandmother let me in."
Poppy smiled as a chuckle escaped her lips took a seat the the table, "What are you making?"
"Well, I got some Stuffed French Toast and Bacon."
"Wait, is this your famous French Toast with the apples?" She asked, watching as he nodded his head, "Mom has been craving them everyday, but she said that nobody makes them like you."
Sam smiled to himself as a memory popped into his head when she said that. He remembered it just like it was yesterday.
Mercedes was in the middle of putting up some towels when she had smelt the aroma coming through the room. It smelt like cinnamon and apples. She was confused because nobody had cooked in the gym kitchen in a long time. Intrigued, she ended up following the source once she finished straightening up the towels. Dodging some of the men who came out with plates, looking at them confusedly before entering the kitchen, finding the last person she expected to.
Sam knew that she would eventually come and he hoped she did. He placed the last of the toast on the plate, drizzling some syrup on there with a little bit of whipped cream. He grabbed a plastic fork and turned around, placing the plate in her hand, "Here you go. Stuffed Cinnamon Apple French Toast."
"What made you make this?"
"I was hungry and this one of the best things I know how to cook, so why not share another talent." He smiled as he watched her closely.
"Thanks." She responded as she looked at him for a moment before she grabbed the fork. He was being awfully nice, and that was very suspicious, "You're up to something, I believe."
"Don't worry, I didn't do anything to them and I'm not up to anything." He said as he saw the look on her face, chuckling before doing the scouts honor, "It's safe, I promise."
"I hope you aren't playing me, Cream Cheese." She said as she cut the toast up with the fork, sliding a piece through the syrup before putting them in her mouth, mumbling, "Oh wow."
Sam crossed his arms over his chest and tilted his head to the side, giving her a smirk, "What was that?"
Mercedes cut her eyes at him before she turned on her heels and headed out of the kitchen, rolling her eyes and letting a slight grin take over her features when she heard him laugh.
Sam wasn't going to let her off that easily as he followed behind her, "Admit it, you love them." He laughed to himself as she ignored him, prompting him to stop, watching as she placed another piece in her mouth before disappearing upstairs.
"She loved them." Sam told Poppy as he fixed her a place, sitting it down in front of her, "She may have acted like she didn't but she did."
Poppy chuckled at the story as she leaned over and grabbed the syrup bottle, "I'm glad you're here. Mommy didn't say anything but she was so sad that you were gone."
Sam glanced down at her and sent her small smile, "Well, I promise I won't leave again because I don't like it when your mom is sad."
"Me either."
At that time, Henry had entered the kitchen. He stood for a moment in the threshold, watching in silence as his granddaughter ate and Sam start fixing a plate that was probably for Mercedes. His eyes zoomed in as his entered the room, opening his mouth to greet them but the smell and the source of it made him forget all of his manners, "Are those your Stuffed Cinnamon Apple French Toast?"
"Yes."
Poppy turned and looked at her granddad in amusement, seeing how big his eyes got as he grabbed his plate and went straight to getting some. A chuckle escaped her mouth, along with Sam, before she shook her head and went back to her plate.
While he was doing that, Sam had picked up the tray that contained Mercedes' breakfast and headed out of the kitchen. He went down the hallway, knocking on the door before opening it.
Mercedes sat up on the bed as she watched him come in with a tray, giving him a small smile when he placed it on her lap, "Thank you." She glanced at the plate and chuckled a bit, "Poppy told you, huh?"
"After the fact." He sat on the side of the bed, giving her a smile when she looked at him, "Besides, I owe both you for the crap breakfast I made in the storm."
"This is seriously the best and only thing you know how to make."
"I'm flattered. I can't believe you tried to pretend like it wasn't though."
Mercedes rolled her eyes as she picked up her fork, prompting him to laugh, "They were pretty good."
"The best but I'll be humble about it." He smirked as he watched her closely, "I want to take care and be here for you, so I'm going to ask Poppy if she okay with me staying over when you guys go back home."
"Asking my kid for permission, how respectful."
"I'm technically still a stranger to her. I don't want her to be uncomfortable." He responded as he watched her use her fork to cut up her toast, "That will be another relationship I can build while I'm there, only if you're okay with that. I just don't want to miss anymore time, especially since you're carrying our baby."
Mercedes stared at him for a moment before her lips parted to speak, "Did you mean all that you said in the hospital?" She waited for him to look at her before he continued, "About getting help."
"It won't be easy, but yes, I did." He watched as she grabbed his hand and gave it a squeeze, prompting him to kiss it before raising his eyes back at her.
"As long as you're willing, I'm always going to be there."
