Chapter 72: Intrigue at the Food Court
"I wonder what Conan-kun is doing now?" Ayumi sighed, the Detective Boys were walking to Beika Central Park.
"The Professor suddenly said he had to go to Hokkaido." Mitsuhiko added.
"He's probably stuffing himself full of tasty foods, like eel." Genta pouted.
"Why is it always eel with you, Genta?" Fumio sighed.
"So, tada!" Genta grinned, pulling out a flyer. "We should go to this event without him."
"The Beika City Farmer's Market?" Ayumi read the flyer.
"It's an event where farmers bring their produce to sell." Mitsuhiko explained.
"Lots of food trucks are coming, too." Genta piped in. "And kids in grade school or younger eat free."
"So, that's what you're after in the first place." Fumio nodded knowingly.
"There's a police event, too." Ayumi blinked. "He's wearing his uniform, but there's Inspector Megure, right?" she pointed to the lower potion of the flyer.
"What?" a voice sounded from the bushes. "What do you mean it won't arrive on time? Didn't you say you ordered it?"
"Keep your voice down." Kanno Kaori chided.
"The shipping company made a mistake." Yamawaki Yuji explained. "What can we do? We'll have to give up on today."
"We can't!" Kanno protested. "What do you think we've been preparing for? If the stuff won't arrive today, we can just go buy it."
"No, there is still time." Kadokura Nobuo corrected. "It could still work out."
"You're right." Kanno agreed. "Let's have an explosive time, just like we planned."
"Did you hear that?" Mitsuhiko whispered.
"She said something about having an explosive time." Genta nodded.
"Speaking of explosions..." Ayumi trailed.
"A bomb!" Genta exclaimed.
"But it's just a fish market." Fumio pointed out. "What are they trying to explode?"
"Inspector Megure?" the other three chorused as one.
"They're leaving." Genta pointed out, the group seeing the three suspects splitting up.
"Split up and follow them." Fumio instructed, when the other three turned to him.
"But I'm hungry." Genta whined.
"Genta, what is more important, your stomach or Inspector Megure's life?" Fumio retorted.
"Alright." Genta relented. "Let's split up and follow them."
In the market square...
"Sato-san, security is in place." Takagi reported. "We just finished combing the area for suspicious persons, too."
"The background checks on the food truck owners and vendors came back clean?" Sato asked.
"Yes." Takagi nodded. "We've asked them to present the identification papers they prepared beforehand when they enter the park."
"Inspector Megure's speech is in about two hours." Sato reminded. "Let's patrol the area again."
Later...
"I see, so you overheard us." Kadokura noted, after having caught Mitsuhiko trailing him.
"Could you please explain?" Fumio demanded.
"An explosive time, huh?" Kadokura chuckled. "That certainly sounds like we're setting up a bomb."
"What's going on?" Yamawaki shouted. "Who's the kid?"
"The two of you, be careful!" Genta ran up. "He was buying oil and gas at the hardware store. They must be planning on building a bomb with it."
"No way." Yamawaki chuckled, after Kadokura told him.
"Listen, this is an misunderstanding." Kadokura explained. "This is our food truck. "We're trying to sell our chicken rice here today."
"Chicken rice?" Genta echoed.
"It's one of Singapore's signature dishes." Fumio remarked.
"We work in a nearby restaurant called Marina." Kadokura added. "We decided to participate in this event to show off our best dish. If we do well today, the restaurant will get lots of customers starting tomorrow."
"The explosive time you heard us talking about was in reference to explosive sales." Yamawaki stated.
"Chicken rice, huh?" Genta mused. "That sounds good."
"Then, what did you get at the cigarette shop?" Mitsuhiko was relentless.
"These." Kadokura pulled out the stack of printed flyers from the paper bag. "I had a printer friend make them for me. Since I ordered them late, they weren't finished until today. I was supposed to pick them up at a cafe, but he was too busy to come, so he called to say he left them with the shop he regularly visits.
"It seems like we were confused." Ayumi admitted, returning with Kanno. "They're not bad people."
"I ran into this one when I returned to the restaurant to pick up the prepped chicken." Kanno related. "Since I had the apron and knife we use to butcher chicken, I scared her."
"They were just trying to cook." Ayumi sighed.
"Then, why would you need so much oil and gas?" Fumio posted a question.
"There was a mistake and our stuff didn't arrive." Yamawaki answered. "We did the basic prep work at the restaurant, but we heat up the soup and make the sauce inside the food truck."
"We received our eating and cooking utensils, but we don't have any gas or oil." Kadokura stated. "We considered giving up, but we managed to get everything in time by going out and buying it. Although the unnecessary expense will probably put us in the red."
"Don't worry, if we spread the name Marina here, starting tomorrow..." Kanno started.
"Our sales could explode." Yamawaki bragged.
"Then, let us try out your chicken rice." Fumio suggested. "If you really work at a restaurant, you should be able to make some chicken rice."
"We're not open yet, but..." Kanno shrugged.
"Four chicken rice ready." Kadokura presented four takeout boxes after opening the food truck.
"Thanks for waiting." Kanno served up the takeout boxes. "Use as much sauce as you like. We didn't make it too spicy."
"It's nothing like I imagined." Mitsuhiko blinked.
"It's not red." Genta noted.
"Singapore chicken rice is rice cooked in chicken broth and topped with steamed chicken." Fumio explained.
"Then, you cover it with whatever sauces you want and eat it." Kadokura brought out two bottles of sauce.
"It's the national dish of Singapore." Yamawaki piped in.
"Thanks for the food." the kids dug in.
"We're really sorry." Mitsuhiko apologized. "We were just confused."
"Can I ask you one more thing?" Ayumi voiced when the food truck shut. "Why do you have a giant star stuck on your food truck?"
"This?" Yamawaki turned to the star. "We like stargazing. On our days off, we always go stargazing."
"We just went last week." Kanno supplied.
"Be careful on your way back." Kadokura sent the kids off.
"You kids." Takagi noticed the four children.
"Detectives Sato and Takagi." Mitsuhiko blinked.
"What are you doing?" Sato asked. "The event hasn't opened yet."
"This and that." Ayumi giggled.
"Those guys made us chicken rice." Genta pointed.
"Chicken rice?" Takagi echoed. "You mean rice flavored with ketchup?"
"No, Singaporean chicken rice is totally different." Genta corrected.
"You serve steamed chicken over rice and eat it with all kinds of sauces." Ayumi stated.
"They certainly must work at a Singaporean restaurant." Sato mused.
"Fumio, what's wrong?" Takagi noticed the slight frown in the younger boy's face.
"Something just doesn't add up." Fumio muttered. Then, his eyes widened when he connected the dots. "Those three... they're lying!"
"Huh?" Mitsuhiko, Genta and Ayumi echoed in unison.
"That star on the truck..." Fumio started. "If those three were indeed workers of a Singapore restaurant, then they should know that Singapore is known as the 'Star Country'!"
"Then..." Mitsuhiko gasped.
"Those three really are planning on planting a bomb!?" Genta exclaimed.
"Takagi, report this to Inspector Megure!" Sato instructed.
"Right away!" Takagi ran off.
"The four of you, get out now." Sato pointed to the park exit.
"Yes!" the four kids nodded and fled the scene.
