Chapter 87: The Target is the Metropolitan Police Traffic Department, Part One
Time passes...
In a darkened room, our mystery culprit was working on his laptop, the camera panning in to a photo frame containing a brown-haired woman on the work table. Aiko... the fisherman-hatted man mused. Damn, it's their fault. He cursed, flashing back to the last SMS message he received. Their fault! Their fault! He fumed, hammering in three 100 yen coins with a hammer and bending them inwards.
At the traffic lights...
"Hey, you're the min patrolwoman's henchwoman." Genta recognized Naeko by the traffic lights.
"It's Naeko-san." Ayumi supplied.
"You're up early." Mitsuhiko remarked.
"We're up early because it's our turn to feed the rabbits." Conan explained.
"Is something happening?" Haibara yawned.
"It's traffic month at the MPD." Naeko explained. "We're tightening supervision."
"All right." Genta looked at the empty street and prepared to cross.
"Don't." Naeko chided. "The light is still red."
"But there aren't any cars." Genta protested. "Doesn't this symbol mean kids can cross?" he pointed to the yellow signboard.
"Genta, that simply warns drivers to be careful because there's a school, kindergarten, or nursery school nearby." Fumio corrected.
"Most road signs are divided by color and function." Naeko added. "Yellow ones like this one are warnings. Red means danger or prohibition. Easy-to-read blue signs are for directions. Calming green that are easy on the eyes are used to guide people to emergency exits. Think of it as the same as a traffic light's red, yellow and green."
"You certainly are a female officer of the traffic department." Mitsuhiko noted.
"The shapes have meaning, too." Naeko remarked. "Circles that appear larger than they are for prohibitions or regulations. Triangles and squares with points at the top look unstable and draw your attention, so they're for warnings and regulations. Solid stable-looking squares are for direction and guidance. I'm sure you'll learn that at school soon. Make sure you follow traffic rules."
"Sure!" the group of first-graders chorused in unison and Ayumi let Naeko guide her over the pedestrian crossing.
In the Metropolitan Police Department...
"Feel like singing, Miike?" Yagi Shiori placed a hand on the despondent Naeko's shoulder. "At karaoke, after work."
"I'll sing." Naeko declared. "Let me sing with you."
"All right, Tōko, will you come with us?" Yagi turned to Momosaki Tōko.
"You bet I will." said Division Sergeant winked.
"Yumi, how about you?" Yagi asked.
"I'll pass." Yumi replied. "I've got stuff to do tonight."
"Is it your Shōgi master boyfriend again?" Yagi teased.
"Yeah, something like that." Yumi laughed nervously and backed off.
At the karaoke bar later that evening...
"Hey, Shiori." Momosaki turned to her superior. As the pair watched Naeko sing her heart's out "Anything strange happen to you lately?"
"Anything strange?" Yagi asked.
"Like being followed by someone." Momosaki clarified.
"Come to think of it, since about a week ago." Yagi admitted.
"Seriously?" Momosaki echoed. "You too?"
"But, we'll be fine." Yagi assured. "We're strong. Besides, you're a third dan judoka."
Later that night...
"Are you okay?" Momosaki inquired, Yagi was about to take a drunk Naeko home. "Can you handle her?"
"I'll be fine." Yagi chuckled.
"Excuse me," a masked man voiced as Momosaki was waiting by the traffic lights. "I've been hearing the sound of a small girl crying in the park bathroom for a while. Could you go check it out? I wanted to ask the police, but there isn't a police box in the neighborhood."
"Got it." Momosaki nodded. "Could you take me to that park?"
By the toilets in the Beika Higashi Park...
"I don't hear anything." Momosaki noted.
"It was coming from the women's bathroom in the back." the masked man pointed.
"Hello?" Momosaki walked towards the female side of the toilets. "Is someone there?"
With Momosaki distracted, the masked man grabbed her from behind, pressing a chloroform cloth against her mouth.
Her martial arts kicking in, Momosaki flipped her attacker over her shoulder. "I knew it." she approached her fallen attacker. "I'd sensed an odd presence recently. I'm a cop." she flashed her identity badge. "Looks like you chose the wrong target for your trap."
The masked man turned and took out Momosaki with a taser to her ankle, paralyzing her. Running to the back of the toilet where he hid a baseball bat, he took the weapon and bludgeoned the defenseless officer to death.
The next day...
"Hey kids." Yumi pressed her car horn, alerting the Detective Boys to their presence. "You're such good kids to raise your hands while you walk on the crosswalk."
"Naeko-san told us about traffic rules yesterday." Mitsuhiko supplied.
"So we did a bunch of research." Ayumi added.
"Kids are hard to see because they're small, so they raise their hands, right?" Genta declared.
"Japanese signs are based off of English ones, right?" Mitsuhiko pressed.
"Anyway, you guys are working early." Genta noted.
"We should get going." Conan reminded.
"MPD to all stations." the police intercom came on. "The body of a woman bludgeoned to death was discovered at Beika Higashi Park. All patrols in the neighborhood, please head to the location."
"Let's head there to preserve the crime scene." Yumi told Naeko and the two policewomen drove off.
Outside the crime scene...
"Sato-san!" Takagi hurried over. "It's no use. We didn't find anything in the area that would help us identify the victim."
"Maybe the suspect took it." Sato reasoned.
"Does that mean this was robbery?" Takagi wondered.
"No!" Naeko gasped in horror. "Momosaki!"
"You knew her?" Sato turned to Yumi.
"She's a colleague." Yumi answered.
"I thought I recognized her." Sato noted. "So, she was a cop."
"Momosaki Tōko," Yumi supplied. "Like us, she worked for the MPD Transportation Department as a sergeant. But she was a third dan judoka. How could this happen? Come to think of it," she turned to the weeping Naeko. "Weren't you going to karaoke with Momosaki and Yagi last night?"
"Yes, but I got drunk." Naeko wiped away her tears. "I only remember Yagi, who went with us, walking me home."
"Where was the karaoke box?" Sato asked.
"Karaoke Beika, on fourth street." Naeko sniffled. "Across the planetarium that was being remodeled."
"That's right over there." Takagi gaped.
"Then, maybe she was attacked while trying to use the park bathroom." Sato surmised.
"But if the suspect bludgeoned a third dan judoka to death, it's possible they're quite strong as well." Takagi reasoned.
"Or they knew she was a cop and planned a countermeasure." Sato added. "This bent 100 yen coin next to the body; what if it wasn't a coincidence and the suspect left it here deliberately?"
"So, it was a premeditated crime." Takagi peered closer. "Maybe it was the work of someone who bore some financial resentment."
"We'll have to canvas the area to gather information." Sato instructed. "But for now, our only clue is this 100 yen coin."
"No." Conan cut in. "There are other clues, too. Look at her left hand. There's nothing on her pointer finger, but there's a scrape along the first joint of her middle, ring and pinkie fingers. And if you flip it over, there's a scrape along the bottom of her palm, too." he turned over Momosaki's hand. "But there aren't any signs that her body was dragged. Which means, her left-hand was already shaped like this and placed against the ground like this. She probably got those scrapes who someone kicked it towards her feet."
"So, she was trying to tell us something by pointing somewhere?" Sato wondered. "At what, though?"
"Look at the tip of her pointer finger." Conan turned Sato's attention to Momosaki's index finger. "See the little bit of blood on it? Maybe that means she knew the culprit will move her hand. No matter where she pointed at, so she used her own blood to leave a fingerprint. Look." he spotted the black spot a little distance away from the body. "There's a stain from where her bloody fingers scraped against it. In other words, she was actually pointing in that direction."
"A swing set?" Sato frowned, her eyes trained on the swings. "Yumi, who else was with the victim at the karaoke box last night?"
"Lieutenant Yagi Shiori also of the Transportation Department was with them." Yumi answered.
"Where is she now?" Sato pressed.
"Yagi's got the day off." Yumi replied. "Since it's still early, she's probably at home."
"I see." Sato nodded." Got it. Someone go to Lieutenant Yagi's place immediately."
"That's right." Yagi confirmed, after she was brought to the crime scene. "Last night, Tōko, Miike and I went to karaoke. I said I'll walk Miike home since she was drunk and parted ways with Tōko in front of the store. I had no idea this would happen afterwards."
"It looked like she was trying to stop by the park bathroom." Sato remarked.
"That's odd." Yagi related. "Tōko used the bathroom just before we left the karaoke box."
"Then, what was she doing in a park?" Takagi wondered.
"Was there anyone who resented her?" Sato inquired.
"Last night, she said she felt like she was being followed starting a week ago." Yagi admitted. But that was the only time we discussed it."
"Do you know anything about a swing set?" Sato pressed. "She pointed to that swing set just before she died. What?" she spotted Yagi's shocked expression. "Did you remember something?"
"I don't know." Yagi changed her tune. "I could be wrong, so I'll call you once I'm sure."
