Chapter 94: The Case of Ayumi's Illustrated Diary
Time passes...
"Saturday, 5th December." Ayumi started off. "Today, Conan caught a jewelry thief. When I asked how he did it, he said it was thanks to my illustrated dairy. But I don't remember figuring anything out. I wonder why he said that. Conan noticed the jewelry thief while walking through a shopping area on the way to school."
Earlier that week...
"Is something wrong?" Haibara asked, hearing Ayumi sigh.
"Is it your illustrated diary?" Mitsuhiko guessed.
"Yeah." Ayumi confirmed. "I'm not sure what to write each day. What do you guys do?"
"Just write about whatever you want to eat that day." Genta pointed out. "Like grilled eel in a bowl, or grilled eel in a box, or quartered grilled eel."
"When I can't decide, I go for a walk." Mitsuhiko supplied.
"Don't you end up writing the same thing every day?" Conan asked.
"What about you, Ai-chan?" Ayumi turned to the other girl.
"It's easy." Haibara replied. "A quick search online yields plenty of ideas like the weather or whatever else. You simply have to choose whatever you like from among the options."
"What about you, Fumio?" Ayumi turned to the light blond.
"I practice people watching in Café Poirot." Fumio let out a smile. "Tou-san says I'm getting better."
"Jeez, what should I do?" Ayumi whined.
"Do what Fumio does." Conan suggested. "Carefully observe all kinds of things and you'll discover the truth."
"There's a bunch of people over there." Genta spotted a small crowd outside the jewelry store.
"What does Kaneko plan to do by stocking something so nice?" Nishimura peered closely at the bejeweled watch in display in the glass case.
"He said he hoped it would revitalize the town." Fujioka answered.
"What if someone steals it?" Ogino wondered.
"I'm not certain, but it's probably insured." Fujioka noted.
"But I wonder how much that watch would sell for?" Ogino mused.
"Even if you sold it so it won't be traced, it'd probably go for at least 70 million." Fujioka pondered.
"I heard you can get several more times the market price if you sell it to a collector." Nishimura stated.
"If I got that much money, I'd take my family to Hawaii." Ogino gushed.
"Speaking of which, did you win that trip to Hawaii you mentioned the other day?" Fujioka asked.
"I don't know yet." Ogino replied.
"So, this is what drew the small crowd." Haibara noted.
"It's a big watch." Mitsuhiko gawked.
"It's so shiny." Ayumi gushed.
"Come on, kids." Ogino reminded. "Isn't it time to go to school? Get moving."
"According to Conan, the jewel thief was trying to steal the big shiny watch from Jewelry Kaneko." Ayumi related.
In school...
"Blue Diamond Limited Toubilion Cage No. 3." Haibara pulled out the article once the group settled in their classroom. "Made by renowned watchmaker Soumillon, there's only five of them in the world."
"No wonder the grocer was so excited." Conan noted.
"It's quite a luxury watch for a small town jeweler." Haibara agreed.
"Enough to create a commotion among ordinary people." Conan added.
"I hope it doesn't become the target of any ill-intentioned people." Haibara stated.
After school...
"Did you beat that game?" Mitsuhiko asked.
"Yeah, I did." Genta beamed.
"It's Detective Takagi." Ayumi blinked, spotting the detective in front of the grocer store.
"Detective Takagi." Conan voiced.
"Conan, and you kids." Takagi smiled.
"What are you doing here?" Mitsuhiko asked.
"Is it about the luxury watch at the store next door?" Conan pressed.
"Not exactly." Takagi chuckled. "There have been a lot of burglaries in this area lately. I'm handing out these fliers to alert the locals."
In Kaneko Jewelry Store...
"Kaneko, how's your security?" Takagi thought to ask after the store owner presented the jeweled watch for the Detective Boys to gush over.
"Don't worry." Kaneko assured. "My security is absolutely secure. I have security cameras covering every inch of the store. The footage is stored on the Cloud, so you don't need to worry about intruders erasing it. Outside of business hours, I keep the sturdy shutters closed. I also have infrared and pressure sensors installed. The store window where the watch is displayed is made of tempered glass and a code is required to open this door. All of these systems are monitored by computer. If anything happens, the security company will come running."
"I see." Takagi nodded. "With security this tight, it's not possible for your average burglar to break in."
"How about underground?" Fumio piped in.
"Fumio is right." Takagi agreed. "Nothing's for certain. Please be careful." he cautioned Kaneko and led the Detective Boys out of the store.
"Nothing of note happened for several days after that." Ayumi continued. "But one day..."
A few days later...
"Good morning, kids." Ogino opened her store for the day and spotted the Detective Boys walking past. "Don't take any detours. Go straight to school." she advised.
"What's that sound?" Genta heard a drill as the group walked past Café Haronbo after school.
"Maybe it's construction work?" Mitsuhiko suggested.
"Looks like they're renovating." Haibara blinked as the group peered in through the Café window. "I don't see anything suspicious."
"Let's check it out for ourselves." Conan led the group in the renovating Café.
"Then, nothing in particular happened for several days." Ayumi recounted. "But while Conan and Fumio brainstormed about it, the culprit's plans were steadily advancing. With no crime, there wasn't anything Conan and Fumio could do, but several days later, the fateful day would come."
A couple of days later...
Conan and Fumio were standing outside the jewelry store when Ayumi headed her illustrated diary over.
"What's this?" Conan flipped to a page with a drawing of him and Fumio standing in front of the Kaneko Jewelry Store. "Found it." he flipped a few pages back to an illustration of Ogino Michiyo going on holiday with her family. "Ayumi, what's Michiyo's family name?"
"I think it's Ogino." Ayumi recalled.
"Could it be..." Fumio turned a look at Conan, the other boy nodding in confirmation.
"There's still a lot I need to confirm, though." Conan noted. "But that's definitely it." taking out his cellphone, he made a call.
Later that evening...
"Hold it right there." Conan declared, the jewel thief was climbing out from the grocer store's shutter gates. "You nearly pulled it off. Too bad.
"You can't escape anymore." Fumio lowered into his fighting stance.
"We've already called the police." Mitsuhiko added.
"You heard an expensive luxury watch was at display in Kaneko Jewelry." Conan stated. "While waiting to see what would happen, you heard Café Haronbo was renovating its store and came up with your plan. Isn't that right, Cheetah Transport courier Fujioka Yuji? This was the plan you came up with: the renovation work being done in the Café next to the jewelry store would generate a lot noise. You decided to use that noise as a camouflage to enter the jeweler from the produce store on the opposite side. As long as the Café was undergoing renovations, no matter how much noise you made, no one would suspect you. Then you just needed the produce store workers to go away. You probably learned the grocer loves prize contests from that conversation and invited her family to Hawaii by lying and telling her she'd won a prize."
"How'd you know that?" Fujioka stammered.
"What?" Fumio deathpanned. "You mean you didn't see the note she posted on the door? The shop is temporarily closed because they're on a family trip."
"That must've been a lot of work." Conan was not sympathetic to the downed thief as the police sirens were heard. "You've been digging for five days since they went on their trip, haven't you?"
"And so, the case was solved." Ayumi concluded. "The culprit Fujioka was arrested by Detective Takagi."
