Chapter II: Day One
Meeting on the first floor of the tavern was not part of the twins' plans but they did have to go through there to exit the building. There was a stark difference between last night compared to this morning. All of the chairs were flipped onto the tables, except a few, as all of the waitresses were sitting, making the place seem less barren. "Good morning, Mama Mia," Irene greeted.
The owner turned towards them with a half-smile, "Morning. Did you two sleep well?" She placed a platter on the bartop, "I occasionally make breakfast but since you're here. Have some." That sounded more like a demand rather than a request.
"Better than being in a tree branch," Isaac commented about their sleeping situation. "Compared to that, the bed felt like Tenkai."
The only waitress not there was Syr. Chloe, Lunoire, Anya, and Ryuu were present and found that comparison to be odd, well, maybe not Ryuu. "You've slept on a tree branch?" Lunoire asked.
"Yeah…it was a very large tree, the branch was about twice to thrice the width of the bar," Isaac admitted, pointing to the bar. "But the view was well worth it."
Mia had dished out portions to each person, "Good, now eat up. Perhaps this will convince you to come back."
Irene giggled, "Maybe. A quick bite won't hurt."
The two ate and were slightly wary as the other waitresses looked at them as they took their first bite. The twins' eyes popped open but withheld from moaning. "Okay, this…wow…"
"We know, right?!" the waitresses chorused.
Quickly devouring their portion, the twins cleaned their mouths, left a small tip for the meal, and the younger twin had to coax her brother along. "Come on, Isaac, Goddess is probably waiting for us."
Rolling his eyes, he let her pull on his arm. "Thank you for the hospitality, Mama! Miss Ryuu, thank you."
The two bowed lightly in acknowledgment. Mia had one last comment of course, "Come on back if you feel like spending your money!"
"We most likely will, the food was amazing!" Irene chirped, smiling at her before they descended the three steps of the building.
Unseen and unheard by them, but not her staff, Mia sighed, "Can't believe that they're yours. They look like two halves of you."
"Whatchnya talkin' bout, Mama?" Chloe asked, her black cat ears twitching.
"Business. First name Nunya, now get back to work! Ryuu, it's your turn for grocery shopping!"
"Hai!" The four girls chorused. None shall oppose Mama Mia.
Back with the twins, they were walking down a side path to get to Northwest Main Street, intent on going to the Guild. Often called Pantheon, it was where they wanted to meet with Dia. Their goddess was already in the city, as she tried to arrive before them and set up most of what she called 'boring stuff' before they registered as part of her Familia. The twins wanted to explore the world. Orario was often called the 'Center of the World' and with the Dungeon being here, there was a whole new world beneath their feet.
A dangerous one but a new world nonetheless.
"Okay, when we get inside the Guild Hall, do not speak to any woman, Isaac," Irene demanded of her brother. They walked side-by-side in the small alleyway before being greeted by the rising sun. They blinked and covered their eyes. The buildings that surrounded them seemed to be more business-like compared to the street prior. Their green cloaks covered most of their bodies and their hoods covered most of their faces.
From the side, their noses could be seen but not much else. These were not special cloaks like one would be if it was crafted with Mystery, a development ability that allowed the creation of peculiar items. They were special because Dia gave them to the twins.
"Why?" he asked with a small laugh. "I'm not that bad."
"Your social skills need work, Isaac. I'm sure the last time you talked to someone of the opposite sex, they probably thought you were asking them out," Irene deadpanned her brother instantly.
"No, I'm sure she was looking at me like I said I lived in Dragon Valley," he said with sarcasm.
"That's not any better, Isaac," Irene scolded. She hit him with her full strength, but he caught her wrist. "Treat people with respect!"
He laughed, "I do! I say hello, and I say goodbye!" At this point, he was messing with her. She snorted and left it at that.
Their pace was even, using the buildings as a guide to the Guild. The building in question was very obvious. It had a steady stream of people coming out of it, people wielding weapons and such. Outside of the three-story building, a board could be seen to the door's immediate right. On it, there were some new names for some adventurers that made it to level two, which was impressive, given the overabundance of adventurers at level one.
What they didn't know was how to use the Falna to their advantage, something their teacher drilled into them.
The twins didn't have a second name, because they had to be in Orario for the Gods' Denatus ceremony. Dia mentioned it was mostly for the Gods' entertainment to name their children. Most names were double entendres, but the children thought they were amazing like some poor sap named Zenith, or High Point. They rolled their eyes at Dia's playful insult to the Gods. Dia never truly cared but now that she has a Familia, she cared immensely.
"What did you think of the kid?" Isaac asked, wanting to know his sister's thoughts about what happened last night. It could have gone a lot worse but thankfully, it didn't escalate.
"He has resolve but is highly emotional," Irene said after a moment, having brushed her mind with her brother's unsaid thoughts. Another facet of the shared spell. "If he is not careful, he will die."
"How morbid," Isaac retorted. "He most likely has never been insulted in such a manner but if it pushes him, I'd say go for it. What about Loki Familia, what did you think of them?"
"Seeing them was different than hearing about them. She looks exactly like she told us," Irene mused. "The auras of first-class is no joke, even with us at second-class. I'm surprised you even wanted to get yourself involved."
"You said it yourself, Irene. We know what that's like. Far more than comfort would allow," he said. Irene's pretty face turned into a scowl knowing he was right. Seeing someone approach them, she nudged Isaac's arm to get him to pay attention.
The person that approached them had green eyes and black hair that hid her left eye. Her top consisted of two shades of green and gold trimmings. The top was long-sleeved with tulip-like endings on the sleeves and neck. The outfit left her midriff exposed but her lower half was covered by a green skirt and sash. Light green stockings covered her mid-thighs and she wore a pair of simple black booties. "Hello, my children."
The twins turned to this person and genuine smiles broke out on their faces, ""Goddess!""
Indeed, the person that emitted a divine aura was Goddess Dia, the twins' deity. She was immediately scooped up into a hug by her children. "I've missed you both dearly. I do hope your travels went well?"
They both grimaced, causing a frown to appear on Dia's delicate face. "We'll need to explain later," Irene said.
The frown went away and a smile replaced it. If they said they will explain, they will explain. Lying wouldn't get them anywhere. "Now, please put me down, we have to go inside and register you two. I do hope that you don't go into the Dungeon right off the bat," She said, as true to her word, her feet were dangling off the ground.
Isaac and Irene complied, putting the petite goddess down, the latter speaking up, "We planned on researching the Dungeon as much as we can before heading in. Perhaps an advisor who can give us access to their notes on the first twenty-seven floors."
Dia nodded at that, "Very well, my children, let's head inside." Upon entering Pantheon, there was a wide space with counters for advisors to speak with adventurers. Beside the counter, there were private boxes for one-on-one talks. The color scheme was a pale green with a cabin brown. The library behind the counter stretched to the ceiling, marking the extensive knowledge and record keeping. Many of the people lingering inside turned toward the doors, feeling the divine aura. One of the people inside happened to be a God as well.
"Is that you, little Dia?"
"Crios, is that you, old friend?" Dia asked as she recognized the man wearing what could be called unique clothing that looked like one was staring into a starry sky. The man's jet-black hair went to his neck, his beard reaching his mid-chest. He was by no means old but was aged…probably made his appearance that way when he descended.
The man, Crios, nodded, "Indeed, little Dia. I never thought you would be down here."
"I've been in Gekai for a lot longer than people believe, Crios. Now, as much as I would love to catch up, I have Familia members to register." The twins never bothered to ask Dia how long she was here but it must be a few dozen lifetimes.
He finally seemed to have taken notice of the twins, "My mistake. Would you like-"
"I'm afraid I don't have time to catch up at the moment, Crios," Dia shot him down. "But it truly was nice to meet an old friend…"
Crios noticed something in his friend before nodding, "I understand, Dia. Do take care of yourself, and you two," he called out to the twins, "Keep this one out of trouble, she can be a handful."
"I am not!" Dia exclaimed playfully, rolling her visible eye.
"Sure thing, elder sister," Crios joked before turning back to what he was doing, which seemed to be some reports.
If it was not obvious, Dia was often described as an older sister type of Goddess. While her domains were Fertility and Growth, she did have an ear to the ground to listen to others' problems. To grow was to become better than their previous selves. That's why Dia always wanted to help. She was dependable.
The receptionist's desk spanned across most of the floor, with large shelves behind them. Dia knew those were the records of the past centuries. She remembers when they were only one shelf full, now they had over eighteen. The trio waited in line, and Dia found herself looking over her children.
Her lovely children's growth was visible to her like the sky. Even when she hasn't given them a status update, a lot must have happened during their separate travels. She wished that she didn't have to go separately but circumstances called her back.
"I've seen this process done hundreds upon thousands of times, children, this should be quick," Dia said as they went up to the counter and saw a red-headed werewolf, her ears twitching at their approach.
"How may I help you today?" The werewolf asked. She wore a black vest and black pants with a white collared long-sleeve shirt underneath with a gray bow tie. Unseen below the counter, she wore a pair of black dress shoes. Her red hair went down to her mid-back and her amber-yellow eyes glanced around until she noticed Dia, "Ah, Goddess Dia, I see you've returned."
Dia giggled, "Indeed I have, Rose, and this time I brought the members of my Familia that I would like to register. Children, introduce yourselves."
"Greetings, Miss Rose, my name is Isaac," the elder twin said.
The younger twin followed, "My name is Irene, Miss Rose."
"Last name?" She asked as she had two sheets in front of her. The redhead was filling them out as they went along. She had them stashed aside for when Dia returned.
The smiles they had strained, "May we take this to a private box?" Isaac asked. "I'm perfectly okay with telling you but if the wrong person heard, there would be problems."
Rose's ears perked up even if her expression did not, "I see no problem with that."
So, Rose gathered the papers, a few quills, and a little jar of ink. These were going to be official documents for the Guild, so they must be done as neatly and with as much correct information as possible. Rose swiftly walked over to the first available box, the goddess and two mortals following.
Inside the room were a simple desk and two chairs, one on each side, and a window that looked to the outside. The sun was just about to reach its highest point today. Dia thanked the Guild receptionist for helping to which she said it was her job. "Your last names?" She asked once she sat down. Dia sat in the other chair, while the twins flanked her.
"Vlahos."
Rose's quill paused. Her expression showed shock, "I'm sorry but did you say-"
"Yes," Irene answered. "Allow us to reintroduce ourselves. My name is Irene Vlahos and this is my elder twin brother, Isaac Vlahos."
Dia watched Rose's expression change from shock to curiosity, and then to realization. "As in…the Great Mage's descendants? Guild records show that she had no family…but…Goddess, have you confirmed that they are indeed who they say they are?" She wasn't being malicious in asking but this was something she had to confirm. It's not every day you hear the legendary name of a High Elven Bloodline, especially so casually.
Dia nodded, pulling out two slips of paper, the top portions of a Status update, and slid them across the table and since the pages don't lie, Rose was forced to accept the fact that these two were of the Vlahos bloodline.
Rose, who normally kept her composure the best out of all the workers, shuddered as her tail waved erratically behind her. She looked at the pieces of parchment in front of her, the evidence right before her. "Oh my…you are…the bloodline lives…"
Dia gently reached out a hand across the table, "Do you understand why they wished to meet here? I'm aware of the legacy of the bloodline and I want to keep a low profile, at least until Denatus. I know that I won't be able to hide them forever—that's very naive thinking—especially in Orario but I won't allow anything to happen to my children. So, I now ask you, Rose Fannett, please keep them a secret and just file the work as normal."
"Goddess Dia, do you know who you brought into the Guild Hall today?" She asked as if the twins weren't awkwardly listening. "You brought in living proof that the line is not gone. You see, we usually try to notify the next of kin if they die while in the Dungeon. Not many High Elven lines are left, maybe four at most. After the previous two Familias tried to fight the last Great Quest, we assumed that most if not all of the gathered adventurers died and she was among them…and there was no next of kin listed."
Isaac took that moment to speak up, "I remember that vaguely, we found a journal that expressed that many of the lines mourned the loss of our family." Irene nodded in agreement. 'Let's not say much more on this because I'm sure Dia did not like that.'
'Agreed,' Irene responded to her brother. Dia, of course, noticed the discrepancy but allowed it. If only to not raise more questions. They, except Rose, know exactly what happened.
Rose felt her brain short circuit. "I understand," she rolled her shoulders, attempting to get some normalcy out of the situation. Dia pulled her hand back as Rose dipped her quill in the ink and looked at the twins, "What level are you?"
""Three,"" they answered.
"Outside of Orario?!" Rose exclaimed. Okay, so normal lasted about five seconds. Clearing her throat, "My apologies, not many level outside of Orario. Obviously, you'll be under Dia Familia…and the last couple of things are where your home will be and sigil."
Dia smiled, "Not to worry, I will handle this. Are you aware of the housing that was bought a few years ago, Miss Rose?"
"The whole apartment complex? Yes, it used to be owned by the Zeus and Hera Familia but…you're serious?" Rose questioned when she saw the knowing smile on the goddess' face.
Dia beamed, "Absolutely. The main building will be our home but what to name it? I won't let the pervert keep that name, and if he complains about it, he can take it up with me."
"What did he name it?" Irene asked with no small hint of trepidation but Isaac was looking on in amusement since he's heard of the big man's legendary track record for persevering in the viewing of women.
Dia scowled, "The Lovely Babes Resort and Spa. He used it to try and peep at women. Hera only allowed him to keep it because she was allowed to use it. One half is the offices and rooms, while the other half was the actual spa. Thankfully, I also hired a small staff of people, eight in total, just to help. The spa section is closed so this is mostly for housing. I'm not made of money so budgeting was the way to go. Remodeling might be a far-off future project…but I could ask Goibniu for help…sorry I'm getting off track."
"You thought of everything," Isaac commented.
Dia allowed herself to be smug, puffing her chest out in pride, "I do plan ahead. As for the name, how about Nomad's Landing?" The twins felt their chests burn with emotion, knowing the hidden meaning beneath the name.
Rose let out a small smile, seeing the bond between god and mortal, rare especially since they seem to be so close…not a Familia but a true Family. Rose mentally snorted knowing the word was the same but there was a difference, "That's perfect. Finally, what will your Familia sigil be? Did you have a design in mind? I can get one of our artisans to sketch it if you describe it."
Dia shook her head, "That won't be necessary. I have a perfect idea, and we three decided on it." Dia pulled another piece of parchment out from the side of her dress and put it on the table.
On it was a cross that Dia was often associated with, and inscribed on it was a magic staff that had a crowned top with a smaller cross atop that. The main cross—the first one mentioned—had lightning bolts all throughout it. There was also another symbol on it, one that the twins insisted on being there. On the top portion of the cross was a small bird, an eagle with a 'V' on it.
Rose marveled at the level of detail. She noticed the inclusion of certain details, which made her look up curiously at the goddess. She's not as naive as people might make her out to be. "Perfect, this will be your sigil for any transactions at the Guild. I will have them sent to your home once we make the proper ones. With that taken care of, I'll finalize this so you may enter the Dungeon at any time and use the Guild services."
Irene raised a finger, "Actually, can we have copies of the notes on the first twenty-seven floors?"
Rose put the quill down, "Planning on going to those floors? If this is your first time entering, I'd recommend taking it slow to get used to all the nuances of the Dungeon, even if you are level three. However, I am not restricting you from going to the Middle Floors but no further than the twenty-seventh. Beyond that, we recommend that you have been at least level four with H to G ranks in your status." Rose knows that they weren't going to go down there but Guild policy tells her to say it like this.
Isaac crossed his arms, his hazel eyes meeting Rose's, "No, we want to learn what's on them, what paths to take, and maybe map out the floors that aren't finished."
Dia sat back, letting them have this conversation. Rose's features perked again, "I'll have to confirm but I believe the Upper Floors are still not completely mapped out. Specifically, floors five through thirteen but this is the first time that someone has taken an interest in mapping. I can have the current maps sent to your home if that's what you want."
Irene smiled, "That would work, thank you. Isaac, Lady Dia, let's go."
The trio left and Rose slumped in her seat, "I have a feeling that they are about to shake things up in Orario…and for once, it makes me glad I'm a Guild employee. The world does need a good kickstart."
With that, she got up and prepared for the most important paperwork in her entire life.
The trio was now outside the Guild, their Familia official. It filled Dia with a bubbling emotion that she threw herself at her children and squealed into the crook of their necks. "I'm so happy! This is like a dream come true, so thank you, Isaac, Irene. You've made this goddess the happiest in Gekai!" The pair had their hoods up again but Dia could see their faces just fine. The smiles they had filled her with emotions she longed to return. Come to think of it, these were the first genuine smiles she's seen from them in months.
"Any time, Dia," Isaac chuckled as he looped an arm around Dia's back. She was shorter than him by a head. Out of the three of them, Dia was the shortest. Irene was in the middle. "So, where exactly is our…place of residence?"
Ah yes, that would be important, now wouldn't it?
"Follow me, my children," Dia said, composing herself once more, brushing her hair out of the way, before turning on her heel and walking forward. The twins watched in amusement before following.
"You mentioned a staff of eight?" Irene inquired.
Dia nodded, "I did, they are going to be part of the Familia but as non-combatants. I offered them my blessing if they choose to take it but I will not force them."
Isaac brought up a good point as they continued towards Babel before making "Wouldn't that affect the Guild taxes? Having more people?"
Dia tilted her head to the side, "Yes but since we're at best a G-rank with you two, the taxes are near negligible because of the side business I will have running." She beamed at the sky, "Since the former resort had many buildings, they also had rooms. I will be renting those out for those that need a home, adventures who live away from their Familias are welcome but they will have a different rate. Otherwise, it will be for the common citizen. As for the paperwork and financials, alongside one of the workers, she will be helping me whilst you are away."
The trio walked in silence as they went down Southwest Main street, passing Amor Square, and arrived at a complex of housing. However, there was one specific symbol of what looked to be a cross with a lightning bolt and royal staff shadowing it, a reference to the once-powerful Familias. "Is this…?"
Dia nodded, "Welcome to Nomad's Landing HQ! I've had a lot of time to prepare this and now I get to share it with you!"
They went to the main building which was a modest two-story home. "Looks small."
Dia quickly grabbed a key from underneath a potted plant, "Looks bigger on the inside. Come, my children." She unlocked the door and opened it.
"Welcome, Lady Dia!" The group of eight people answered. "Welcome, Mr. Isaac, Miss Irene."
"Hello!" Irene smiled at them. Isaac watched three of them flush lightly, two men and one woman.
"Always the charmer, Irene."
The whole building was indeed a lot bigger on the inside. They currently stood in the living room, and a side room had the kitchen. There was even a window that connected the two. In the back left corner, a set of stairs could be seen. One of the staff members was at the top of the staircase, waving down to them.
"The rooms are up here. Lady Dia has claims to the largest one, no offense to you twins. You both have separate rooms but they do have a door that connects them both. As you know, this used to be a Spa and Resort, a home away from home. So some of the buildings resemble inns." The one who spoke wore a maid outfit, complete with the headpiece and dainty white gloves. Her hair and eyes were a darker shade of turquoise. Admittedly, she was very pretty. "My name is Sadie Shiraki, the head maid. The staff answers to me, so if you have a concern, please bring it to our attention. We are here to serve you." The group was split from four men to four women.
Only one man, a Chienthrope, wore the full butler attire, while the other three boys wore less formal versions. The tie usually associated with butlers was absent from them. They stood in a loose-at-attention stance, waiting for orders.
The women's outfits were a mix, Sadie's being the full Maid attire one would expect in Orario. One was more of a Far Eastern style of a maid outfit. One was less formal than Sadie's, the skirt slightly higher and without the elbow-length gloves. The last one was meant for something else entirely but it fit the girl well.
They all had their hands clasped in front of them at their waists, also waiting for orders.
Isaac closed his eyes before linking with his sister, 'I feel a little awkward.'
Irene nodded at the explanation whilst she responded, 'I do as well but if Lady Dia had hired them, then she must have questioned them thoroughly.'
"Dia…are they aware?" Isaac then asked, not looking at Sadie.
"Of your heritage?" The Goddess asked, looking over a few papers on the coffee table in the middle of the room. "Only if you want them to know."
"I see."
Dia gently assured the twins, "They are bound by contract to not reveal Familia secrets unless they become known. You two know that."
"I do hope that this doesn't cause tension between us?" Isaac asked, rubbing his head.
Sadie interjected, "No, we are thankful to Lady Dia for helping us. You see, most of us used to serve other Familias as non-combatants but we were often…pushed aside. Some came because of a job offer. Lady Dia has proven that she is kinder than any God I have personally met. She has my gratitude."
Dia blushed at the honest praise, making the three other females giggle at her bashfulness. "That certainly sounds like her," Isaac said with a small chuckle. "She is often compared to being the big sister to many people…us included."
"Also, Lady Dia…" Sadie began, "We wish to accept your offer."
"R-Really?" The petite Goddess stood from the couch, watching Sadie descend the stairs and stand in front of her. "It was only an option!"
"The benefits outweigh the negatives," Sadie smiled gently at Dia. "We have all discussed it. Tristan and Kalen were the most eager, as was Alice." The three mentioned, a Cat Person, a Dark Half-Elf, and Amazon all fidgeted at being singled out. "When you are ready, Lady Dia."
Dia stood there like a fish out of water, her mouth opening and closing. "To be frank, I offered because I wanted to keep you safe, it was only an option…" she repeated, "…but if that is your choice, I would gladly accept you! Isaac, Irene? I would like your opinions."
All eyes turned to the twins, who had finally walked up to them all. The elder one went first, "I mean, I guess it would be nice to have another guy to be around." The males all shared a chuckle at that, making all the women roll their eyes. "If you are going to be with us, then you can ask me for help if you need it."
He didn't see a problem arising from this, and it does take the pressure off them a little.
Irene walked up to the girls, inspecting them with narrowed eyes, "Does that mean we can discuss fashion and boys?" This time making the men roll their eyes.
The one named Alice spoke, her slightly darker skin—marking her as an Amazon—contrasted her blonde hair perfectly. Her eyes were a deep shade of violet. "Sure, I imagine most of us have a few stories from our times."
"Lady Dia, I accept. But you boys better not peek or so help m-"
"I think they got it, Irene," Isaac calmed his sister. "That goes the same for the girls. Let's not be the previous owners of the building, okay?"
Sadie nodded, "On that, we can agree. There are separate bathrooms, so that will not be a problem."
"Good," Dia sighed, "Now, may I ask you to clear the room? I need to discuss something privately with them."
"May I suggest the office, Lady Dia? It will be perfect for your private conversation and we'll be out of hearing range," Sadie brought up.
"That's acceptable. Follow me please," Dia gestured to them to follow. "Please, you eight, relax. You do not need to be super formal all the time. After all, you're in my Familia now. We'll take care of the Guild business after."
The office was pretty lavish with one half being business, and the other being a pleasure. The ornate desk sat below the window, currently clear of papers but had plenty of quills and ink on standby.
The desk itself was currently bland as Dia had no time to personalize it. She still had many things to prepare in such a short time before Denatus. Dia sat in the chair that was far too big for her and spun in it once, the twins chuckling under their breath.
Of course, across from the desk was a very large bed. The sheets on it were a majestic plaid green. Dia had the entire bedspread changed because of the previous owner. "So, tell me what happened," she said in the chair.
The twins stood at opposite ends of the desk, their cloaks draped over their person. Irene shivered at the mood change, "Well, while I was waiting for Isaac in Melen, they came."
"They…did they see you?"
She shook her head, "No, but they were actively looking across the town. I had to use the spell I was currently trying to learn to slip out of there and get here. Even casting it and holding it took most of my current Mind pool."
Isaac sighed, "That was reckless. You know the drawbacks to using that." But both Dia and Irene knew he was just worried about his baby sister, it didn't matter they were six minutes apart, Isaac fit the big brother role easily.
"I didn't have a choice! We left because we didn't want to be found and now they're coming. Our time is limited," she said, freaking out. She hugged her torso and swayed side to side, "Even though we both can overpower whatever they send at us, I would rather not cause more problems."
"Irene," Dia cooed to her child, getting up and reaching for her hands. "Deep breaths…"
Irene paused and did just that, "Hhhuuu, ahhh…"
"Better?" Dia asked, gently cradling them, and playing with Irene's fingers.
"Much…" Irene smiled softly.
Isaac still had questions, "When did it happen? The time of day?"
She looked up and clicked her tongue, "Mid-afternoon to early evening? I just helped Lord Njord with a minor task. I never gave him anything more than my first name and was just passing through."
Dia returned to the desk chair, sitting back down, leaning forward, and interlocking her hands under her chin. She would have to speak to Njord at some point. "Did you hear anything before you left the scene?"
Irene scrunched her face, "I think I heard them asking citizens if they have seen me…" she paled, "And they were saying, Vlahos…"
"People most likely thought they were crazy since they believed our line died out fifteen years ago," Isaac said.
"For now, we operate as normal," Dia said. "Now, Isaac, did you have any run-ins?"
"Not that I'm aware of…but my skill kicks in at different times, so if I was in any danger, I have no such recollection," the elder twin hummed. Dia detected no lies, so he was clear. "I just stuck to the outskirts of town for the night, wondering where you were, Irene. Since the range on our spell was about one kilomeder, as per our last Status update."
The younger twin huffed, "I still don't understand why they're after us…I can't do what they want anyway."
Dia was curious, she knew why they were after her children but this statement caused her some confusion. "Could you elaborate?"
"The Bloodline Blessing that she passed down to me…it can only be done with someone else in the bloodline, a…way of identification if you will. Considering the lett-Isaac, the letter!" Quickly, Irene fished out the letter that had the familiar handwriting and handed it to Dia.
The goddess read through it once, twice before looking up, "It makes so much sense now. They want the blessing from your bloodline but they can't get it because it-"
"Has to be granted to them by the current or one of the previous users of it. Having a Falna allows it to be 'seen' in some physical form," Irene finished.
Dia set the letter on the desk and leaned back in the chair, "So…it's pointless for them to chase you."
"…in essence," she replied. "Trying to convince them is useless, remember? We tried that and they still tried to kill me."
"And people wonder why the world looks down at elves for having such ludicrous notions about racial superiority," Isaac said, leaning on the desk. "I mentioned the topic of our Status, don't we think it's time for an update?"
Dia smiled, liking how the topic shifted away from doom and gloom. "Good, I was about to refer to that, as I can feel and see your growth. So, which one of you wants to go first?"
The twins immediately pointed at one another.
Dia sighed, head in hand as she should have expected this outcome. "Isaac, you first," she decided. This always happens. One would think that Dia wouldn't ask such a question. The twins always seemed to want to see their respective sibling's status or they were being courteous.
Isaac nodded, striding over to the bed and unclasping his cloak, gently laying on the bed before removing his longsword, two short swords, and his belt. Finally seeing underneath the cloak, the chest armor was nothing special but Gerald had given it reinforcement enchantments to preserve it. The chances were that the twins weren't going to head out in that direction again if they could help it. He slipped the chest plate off and then his shirt, revealing a toned chest, a few faded scars could be seen. His fingers traced them with a fond smile. "I remember that one…damn, she made sure that I got the lesson."
Dia padded her way over to her child, sitting next to him. "Turn, and give me one of your knives, please."
A small throwing knife was placed in her hand. Dia cut the point of her index finger and placed it at the top of his back. With a flourish of light, the status on Isaac's back revealed itself, a cross tattoo—the sigil from earlier—with writing in the Language of the Gods. Dia could read it perfectly being a Goddess, the twins could read a few words here and there but not enough to be coherent in it.
Dia sucked on her finger to stop most of the bleeding, then started updating his status. Her hair flow looked wispy as both of her eyes zeroed in on the five numbers before her. "Wow, Isaac…you either worked yourself to the bone in our time of separation or you were in a lot more danger than you knew. This is likely the biggest jump in your status ever…"
"Really?" He asked over his shoulder. "I swear I wasn't looking for danger, it-"
"Often finds you, I'm well aware. Everything went up a rank except for magic, one point away from moving up. Nothing over one hundred points but still double digits in every category. Dexterity reached S rank, congrats, my child. Your development abilities went up a rank each."
"That's a lot of growth for such a short time," Isaac marveled. "I honestly don't feel like I earned it."
"Accept it, because it is now your status," Dia said, gesturing to Irene for a piece of paper so that she could translate it into Koine. After that, she closed his status and pushed it into his back before she locked it and the cross tattoo faded. His back now looked clear like the status was never there. "Your turn, Irene."
The younger twin nodded, having shed her clothing, one arm covering her modest bust while the other hand held her hair. Isaac never looked back, slowly getting dressed. He was not weird nor looking to peek at his sister. It was different when they were eight.
Dia's cut on her finger still had some blood, so she used that to unlock Irene's status, "Your growth still astounds me. Everything went up a rank, and your Magic is at S rank. However, only one development ability leveled," Dia listed off. She hummed as she continued digging. "I don't see that spell that you used before so you still have to study it. A grimoire might help in the future but those are expensive. Start saving your valis if you wish to purchase one. Your healing magic finally came in, however."
"Finally!" Irene exclaimed. "That healing magic tome was so long and the spell was tedious to cast."
"Congrats, sister," Isaac called, still looking away, studying his status update.
"Irene, you need to work on your strength, while high, it is the lowest of your stats. I understand that you two have different fighting styles, thanks to her teachings, but if you want those to be as high as possible before finding your feats, work on them. Isaac, I expect at least a Mind Down. Put force into your spell."
"Understood, Dia," Isaac replied seriously, having gotten up from the bed. "…do you think she would be proud of us?"
Dia paused in the translation of Irene's status, "…I believe so…I think she wishes she could be present but you know why she couldn't follow."
He sighed heavily, emotionally exhausted, "I know…doesn't make it easier."
Irene cautiously looked over her shoulder at her brother, her visage showcasing her worry. 'Is it something I can help you with?'
'…I dunno. It does sometimes feel like you outclass me.'
'In some ways, I do, but in others, you win hands down. I'm getting you a grimoire, no exceptions,' She would not stand for this when he's worked just as hard as she has.
She felt his smile through their shared spell, 'Thank you…I'll leave you to it.' He left the paper on her desk before heading to the door.
Dia looked between the two, letting them have the semblance of privacy. She knew they were speaking to each other and no matter how much she wanted to intervene, she knew that not every situation could be handled the way she wanted.
She wordlessly handed her status sheet to Irene, "Take a few hours to sleep, you both look exhausted."
"But this is your room…"
"I know how to share, my child," Dia cleaned her cut and then headed back to the desk. "Or you could explore the home or get to know the staff, I think they would appreciate it."
Isaac paused outside the door, "Sure."
Once the twins were properly dressed again, they set out to explore their new place of rest. Irene led the way, dragging Isaac by the hand. "You need to branch out more." She wisely did not bring up the previous mood in the office. He needed some happiness.
"Oh, Miss Irene, Mr. Isaac, I assume your chat went well?" Sadie asked, having just come up the stairs, she was going to knock on the office door to ensure nothing happened.
"It did, thank you," Irene smiled at the head maid. She looked to be older than the twins but not by much. "Could you have everyone introduce themselves? Since you are going to be here…"
Sadie smiled gently at them, bowling slightly, "But of course, gather in the living room, I shall fetch everyone else."
The twins went by her, thanking her. She continued to stare in the direction they went in as she spoke, "They've grown…"
"Yes…" Dia's voice could be heard as she exited the office. "They have. Thank you for answering my message."
Sadie's eyes lost their playful edge as she regarded Dia seriously, lowering her voice to a mere whisper, "I vowed to serve the line, Lady Dia, and I won't let anything happen to them. She trusted me…and I failed to keep them safe. Martin and I promised her."
Dia's visible eye crinkled in contentment, "I don't think you failed. I kept them safe as well…after all…meeting them was one of the best days of my life here on Gekai, and they were only babies then…now, we should probably join them."
Sadie nodded and slowly followed after the Goddess, "Isaac and Irene Vlahos, how much you've grown since the last time I saw you…" her eyes showed immense sadness. "I hope they won't be upset with me once they find out."
Dia gently grabbed Sadie's hand, "I assure you that they don't hold grudges, if anything, she taught them that. She often found they were not worth it. I even believe that Mama Mia said to me that they look a lot like her."
Sadie nodded, "The only thing missing is the hair color. Martin will be pleased…he often was saddened that he was unable to keep his promise." The turquoise eyes drooped a bit when recalling that fateful day.
Dia pulled her along, "Oh, and by the way, I'm glad you two finally sorted your feelings out. I hope you live happily together." Sadie paused when she heard that. "I also don't mind if you wish to…cultivate a new life, just keep it down, if you would?"
"Dia!" Sadie shouted as the culprit to her red cheeks giggled as she entered the living room where everyone else gathered.
Perhaps this batch of young blood will prove better. After all, this was not her first time having to lead a batch of helpers.

Look at me! I did another thing. So, we'll get to meet the group of helpers next chapter. Sadie and Martin—only mentioned—will be an item. They are older than the group, so no need to worry. I did spend a good chunk of time making the group. Obviously, this is a lot different from the OG version. I imagine that some of you have questions and sure ask away. If I am evasive in my answers, well, I don't want to spell everything out. It's not a story if I tell you everything. Some were briefly introduced but I do elaborate on them later.
As I said, things have changed. I can explain the skills here. The unique skill that Isaac possesses. "Due to being put in many perilous situations, Excelia gain is significantly increased if life is in danger. Gains are dependent on the severity of injuries" is incredibly vague because that's how DM is. Danger is subjective but that does not mean he can abuse it and say he is in danger all the time. Life and death situations or even a confrontation that threatens his life are included.
Mental Stability is for both of them, a perhaps weaker or bootleg version of Liaris Freese. Take this information as you will.
The one that probably has you questioning what I'm doing. Bloodline Pact. While I'm not going to be doing any blood magic since that doesn't fit in DM, this is pretty simple. By using various spells, Irene gets different increases in say Strength but she gets more points in magic. If she got five in the former, she would have maybe twelve in the latter instead of seventeen in Magic. That's the kind of thing I'm going for.
It's a Boon to be sure but there is a drawback, so she's not going to be OP either. Irene will have to get permission to use others' magic, much like Lefiya does (or is that a Fanon thing?) but it has to be explicit permission, none of this vague shit. She either gets it or not at all, so that's why Isaac's spell is there.
There's more to it but again, I can't tell.
I do realize that their statuses may be higher than normal but they've also been away from one another for quite some time. So, naturally, they did what they could to help themselves. I'm excited for this because it allows me to flex a bit more with canon. Bell will come into play eventually but don't expect to have him in scenes as a main focal point all the time.
