Chapter 17
Heaven Is Waiting
January 1st
The conversation around the table ends as Sam goes on with the rules,
"Rule number two, you can't go near people until you have full control of your shapeshifting. Rule three, we don't fight each other, we are a pack, you pick a fight get ready to deal with the consequences. Rule four, you can't disobey Alpha orders-"
"Not really a rule when you don't get a choice," Paul scoffed. Fay elbowed Paul.
"Sam," Billy said getting the tables attention. For a moment it was like the pair had a conversation no one else could hear. After a few moments Sam nodded and looked back at Jacob.
"Jacob, since you are direct descendant of Ephraim Black you are the true Alpha," Sam said. Jacob processed this information silently for a minute.
"What?" He asked, his hands starting to tremble.
"Jacob calm down," Sam warned.
"You want me to lead something I don't even want to be a part of?" Jacob's voice got louder with each word.
"Jacob none of us chose this," Fay said calmly.
"Son it's your birth right," Billy said.
"No, I'm not doing it, no," he threw his hands in the air and marched away from the table into the house. Fay stood up with a sigh.
"I'll get him." Fay found Jacob standing in the living room, he was shaking like mad.
"None of us wanted this Jacob, you have to understand that. But we didn't have a choice. If you don't want to be Alpha you don't have to, but you are going to be a part of this pack. Whether you like it or not, you're stuck with us."
"This can't be real," Jacob hissed looking at Fay.
"You can say that as many times as you want nothing is going to change." They stood there in silence for several long minutes until Jacob sighed in defeat and walked back to the pack, Fay following closely behind. Everyone at the table acted like they didn't notice them return but Fay knew they would have all been listening in, even the ones without super hearing. Sam was the only person at the table not participating in a conversation about the weather or looking around like they had never been here before. Sam looked at Jacob then turned to Fay. The girl gave him a slight shrug and he nodded.
"Well, I think it's time to leave," Sam said looking around the table.
"Thank you all for coming," Fay smiled as she started to stack up the plates as people started to stand. Jacob stayed seated, a little shocked that everyone would leave just because Sam said so. Even Billy was leaving with only a small wave over his shoulder at Jacob. Sam put his hand on Jacob's shoulder as he walked past him.
"I'll be back here at one to get you for patrol, don't go anywhere," Sam said before leaving.
After just a minute the only people who were left were Jacob, Fay, Embry and Paul. Embry was helping Fay carry dishes to the kitchen sink while Paul found the muffins Emily had brought and continued to eat. Jacob stood up, feeling out of place. Embry offered him a smile as he took the last of the dishes to the sink.
"We still good for this afternoon?" Embry asked Fay as he sat down the dishes.
"Yeah, definitely," Fay smiled. She was excited to go ride dirt bikes with Embry, she hadn't tried it before but from the memories she had seen in Embry's mind it looked like a lot of fun.
"What are you doing?" Jacob asked as he joined them.
"Embry's going to show me how to ride a dirt bike," Fay said as she started to wash the dishes in the warm water. Jacob's face lit up a little, but Fay cut him off before he got to excited. "Sorry Jacob you will be on patrol this afternoon. Maybe next time."
"Yeah dude you definitely have to come out next time. It's so great to have you back Jake," Embry said grinning. "I've got to go get some shut eye. see you guys later." It was down to Fay, Jacob and Paul. Fay was starting to clean up the kitchen and put away dishes as Paul finished up the last few scraps of food. Jacob sat in silence at the kitchen bench. Unconsciously his eyes watched Fay glide around the kitchen. Paul noticed though, smirking as he took the last plate to the sink.
"See you later gorgeous," Paul smiled, leaning down to press a kiss to Fay's cheek. She pushed him away, laughing the kiss off like it was nothing. Because to them it was nothing, to bad others in the room didn't know that. A growl rumbled across the room. Paul looked over at Jake.
"Wow, chill out dude, just messing around." Paul said wrapping an arm around Fay's waist. Fay could see the glint in Paul's eyes that meant he was now just doing this to get a reaction out of Jacob, and it was working.
"Don't touch her," Jacob's voice was deep and demanding, he was on his feet in seconds, shaking madly. Fay quickly got out of Paul's grasp and stood between the two of them.
"Jacob calm down, I can handle myself, Paul was just being an ass. Weren't you Paul?" Fays eyes flicked back and forth between the men on either side of her.
"He imprinted on you didn't he?" Paul looked at Fay in shock.
"Paul leave!" Fay yelled.
"He doesn't know?" Paul asked as Fay grabbed him by the arm and dragged him towards the closest exit.
"No, he doesn't, so shut up," she hissed.
"Your joking?" Paul laughed as Fay pushed him off the veranda.
"Bye Paul," Fay said slamming the door in his face. Fay went straight to Jacob. "You need to calm down Jacob, Paul didn't do anything wrong he's just trying to get into a fight." Her hand brushed across his cheek and into his hair without her telling it to.
"What does that mean?" Jacob asked.
"What?" Fay was a little dazed as she found her eyes locked on his. She pulled her hand away and shook her head.
"What does imprint mean?" Jacob asked.
"Don't worry about that, it's nothing important... You really need a haircut, Jacob." He made an annoyed face and Fay smiled. "Give me a minute I'll go find some scissors."
AN: Sorry it's been over a year since my last update. Life got away from me and time just seemed to disappear. I hope by posting this chapter -even though it's not my best work- it will inspire me to write future chapters.
