Chapter 18
Heaven Is Waiting
January 1st Afternoon
Jacob couldn't stop running his hands through his black hair; now it was cut shorter than it had ever been.
"You keep doing that it's going to all fall out," Fay mused as she placed a stack of sandwiches on the bench in front of Jacob. She was impressed with her hair cutting skills and liked Jacob's new look.
"Did it have to be this short?" Jacob wined as he picked up his first sandwich.
"Trust me, it grows like mad, after a couple more phases you'll be wishing it was shorter," Fay smiled sitting down with her own food.
"I don't believe that," Jacob said. Fay smiled softly and the two eat in comfortable silence until Embry arrived.
"Hey dude you look good, barely recognised you," Embry said slapping Jake on the back.
"He doesn't like it," Fay said tossing her last sandwich to Embry who caught it one handed.
"You'll get use to it," Embry shrugged before taking a bight of the sandwich.
"I guess," Jacob said with a shrug.
"Is that what your wearing?" Embry asked looking at Fay. She still had on the same denim shorts and white shirt she wore earlier that day.
"Yes, what's wrong with it? I didn't realise there was a dress code for motor bike riding."
"It's white," Embry pointed out.
"Yes..." Fay said slowly. "And your shirt is blue. What's your point Embry?" Fay asked.
"You're going to get covered in mud. You sure you don't want to wear a darker colour?" He suggested.
"This shirt will probably get ripped to shreds next time I phase so I don't really care if it has some mud marks," Fay said, pointing out the obvious.
"I guess that's true," Embry said finishing the sandwich. "You ready to go then?"
"Yeah, unless you want to judge my style of hair cut next?" Fay asked sarcastically.
"Nah that's fine by me."
"Good, now let's go. Jacob will you be right here by yourself until Sam gets here? He shouldn't be too far away."
"Yeah, I'll be fine, thanks. Have fun," Jacob smiled.
"You too," Fay said waving over her shoulder as she left the room. Embry had already dropped the bike off at the dirt road they would be practicing on. It was only a short ten-minute walk from Fay's house.
"So, how's he dealing with it all?" Embry asked after they were far enough in the forest that he was sure Jacob would not be able to hear them.
"He'll be fine in a few weeks, he just has to get use to it," Fay said softly.
"Do you think he's going to take over from Sam?" Embry asked.
"No. At least not for a while."
"Who do you think is going to be Beta once he does become Alpha?"
"That's up to him," Fay shrugged.
"I guess... Hey do you ever think about imprinting?"
"I don't want to talk about it," Fay answered quickly taking the lead even though she didn't know where they were going. She could feel Embry giving her a confused look as she moved faster.
Jacob POV
"How are you feeling?" Sam asked as the pair left for patrol.
"You don't care."
"Jacob I'm only here to help you."
"Can I at least call Bella to tell her I'm okay, she's going to be going crazy with worry." Sam didn't reply for a few minutes as they walked aimlessly through the forest.
"Okay. When we finish patrol you can call her, tell her to stay away. You do not mention anything about us to her. The only people other than the pack that can know about us are the elders and imprints. No one else. It's for their own good." Sam said making things as clear as possible.
"Paul said that word earlier, imprint. What does it mean?" Jacob asked. Sam was silent for another moment as a thoughtful look passed over his face.
"Never mind that's not important. Now I want you to focus."
…
"Yo Fay, earth to Fay. Are you listening?" Embry asked waving a hand in front of Fays face.
"Sorry I zoned out after you showed me how to start it." They were now at the dirt road, and it had started to rain. The cold rain didn't bother either of them, but puddles were starting to form on the uneven road.
"Come on Fay-"
"How hard could it be?" Fay asked cutting Embry off.
"I know you heal quickly and all, but that bike is my baby. If you break it, I will not react well," Embry hissed. "Look, I'm sorry I brought up imprinting, I know it's not an easy subject to talk about especially since we don't know if female wolves can even imprint. I've just been thinking about it a lot lately and I thought I could talk to you about it."
"Sorry I'm just not in the mood to talk about that kind of stuff at the moment. Maybe another time."
"Yeah sure, whenever." Fay gave Embry a smile as her grip tightened on the bike handles. She revved the engine once and Embry gave her an approving smile back. With a second rev of the engine, mud flew in the air and the bike took off. Embry wasn't amused to have to rub mud off his face.
It was like flying, that was the only way to describe it. In wolf form she could outrun the bike easily but running took a lot more effort than riding. As she rounded the first corner, Fay enjoyed not having someone popping in and out if her head. Sharing your female mind with half a dozen teen guys got annoying very quickly. As she rounded the last bend mud was all over her clothes and skin, in her hair and her shoes.
"You look great, I think wet mud is so your colour," Embry smiled as the bike slowed to a stop.
"Very funny. I don't know what you were so worried about that was easier then running," Fay said with a wide grin.
"I'm glad you like it, now it's my turn, get off."
"Oh, come on Embry. One more lap, please?" Fay asked nicely.
"It's my bike, I want a go!" He said sounding childish.
"Fine," Fay sighed stepping off the bike. Embry smiled taking the bike from her.
"You smell that?" Fay asked as a shiver ran through her.
"What, you eating my dust?" Embry laughed. The wind changed direction and the bike fell from Embry's hands as a sickly-sweet smell hit his nose. "Leaches," he hissed. They both started shaking, ready to phase as something cold and solid slammed into Embry's side throwing him several feet. Fay phased into a mess of thoughts as her eyes locked onto the blood sucker. Its blood red eyes were wide and wild like an animal's. It bared its teeth and hissed at Fay.
Fay! Where are you? Sam asked through the mind link.
On the road to the timber yard, Fay replied as she watched Sam and Jacob change direction.
We'll be there in a minute, Sam said as he let out a howl for the rest of the pack. The leach was examining Fay's wolf. It seemed unsure. Did it not know what they were?
Where did it come from? Fay thought as she slowly walked around the monster trying to get between it and Embry. She could hear he was starting to move again; the hit must have knocked him out for a minute.
Teeth, watch the teeth, Sam growled as the creature hissed at Fay once again. Fay couldn't pull her eyes away from the red irises that drilled into her brain. Her memory flashed back to the last time she had seen eyes like those, she had almost died. Fay and the Leech both jumped at the same time colliding in mid-air.
Fay could hear voices yelling at her in her mind as her jaws locked onto the leech's forearm. She could hear it's ice like skin cracking under her teeth as her four paws hit the ground. She realised how big of a mistake she had made all too late. The leech swung itself onto her back and wrapped its free arm around her neck. She prepared herself for the sound of her neck cracking and faces flashed through her mind.
She heard a sickening crack and waited for the pain, but nothing came and the arms around her neck disappeared. She looked around to see what happened. Jacob had ripped the leech off her throwing it across the road. It recovered quickly though a shocked look covered its face. The creature was gone in the blink of an eye, a flame of red hair flying behind it. Jacob and Embry took off after it. Jared and Paul's wolves ran from the close tree line a moment later and joined the race to catch the bloodsucker.
Sam towered over Fays wolf growling down at her. The thoughts of the packs reentered her mind as the haziness to her vision ware off. "Fay! Answer me! Fay?" Sam's growl was the one to break through to her.
"I'm fine," Fay wined pulling herself back to her feet. A front leg didn't hold her weight and she held the paw off the ground.
"What were you thinking, it almost killed you!"
"What do you want me to say Sam?" Fay growled.
"You should have waited! Don't let her get away!" Sam's mind was split between two places and Fay took the break in his thoughts to move away from him.
Fay hobbled to the tree line phasing back as soon as she hit the trees. Her arm was broken just above the wrist, letting the hand hang at a wrong angle. Fay slipped her large shirt on over her head and good arm coddling her broken arm to her chest. It was silent for a few seconds before Sam phased back.
"Fay! I'm not done with you yet," Sam growled jogging to catch up with his sister. "What you did back there was stupid. One second slower and you would..."
"I don't need a lecture," Fay hissed as she felt the bruises that were forming on her neck. Her arm would be healing soon as well.
"I think you do. How stupid could you be? What if Jake hadn't gotten there in time? I would have been too late."
"Can you yell at me later, I really don't feel like this right now," Fay said back.
"You scared the hell out of me, you know that right?" Sam stopped walking and Fay slowed down. "I can't lose you again."
"All I could see was that leech, the one from the day you and the others found me. All I wanted to do was kill him, I wasn't thinking straight," Fay shook her head.
"No, you weren't. So how long were you going to keep the secret from me?" Sam asked.
"What do you mean?" Fay asked, confused. Turning around to finally face her brother.
"The imprint." Fay swallowed a lump in her throat and started walking again.
"How do you know about that?" She asked as Sam walked along next to her,
"You haven't been the same since he joined the pack. Right before Jake ripped the leech off you, pictures flashed in your mind, pictures of him."
"What? Did he notice? He doesn't know."
"What?" Sam asked, confused.
"Jake has no idea I imprinted on him."
"How?"
"He had just phased for the first time, just learnt I was alive and the legends where all real," Fay explains.
"You need to tell him."
"He's confused enough, I don't want to make things any harder for him."
"You're just making things harder for yourself Fay. You can't hide the feelings you have for him, not for long."
"Paul has already worked it out. I think Embry was almost there as well. Can you just give me a few more days," Fay pleaded to her brother.
"I'll put Jake on morning patrols with Jared for the next few days, after that I can't help," Sam knew it was hard to keep secrets for long in this pack and it was only a matter of time before everyone knew about the imprint.
"Thanks," Fay whispered turning to walk back to her house.
"Congratulations," Sam said, he was happy for her.
