Chapter 19

Heaven Is Waiting

January 1st Night

It was dark outside; dinner was cooking on the stove. Soft music played in the background and Fay hummed along with it as she stirred the pot on the stove. There was a tap on the window in front of her. She looked up at her reflection in the window only to find blood red eyes looking back at her. Fay had no time to react as the monster jumped through the glass nocking Fay to the ground. She tried to scream but the thing was already biting her neck.

Fay gasped awake. She didn't remember falling asleep, but she must have closed her eyes on the sofa and drifted off. Fay wasn't sure how long she was asleep for, but it was now very dark outside. There was a blanket tossed over her legs meaning someone must have put it there. Fay stood up and went to the kitchen where she could hear some movement. She found Jacob rummaging through the pantry.

"Can I help you find something?" Fay asked after a few moments of watching him searching. He had bread and butter out on the bench but couldn't find what else he was searching for.

"Fay! Your awake! How are you feeling?" Jacob was in front of her within half a second. His super hearing may not have been the best, but his speed had definitely set in.

"I'm fine, my neck is healed, hand feels normal as well," Fay said rubbing her wrist where the bone had mended itself.

"Are you sure?" Jacob reached out without hesitation and ran his hand over her neck, as though looking for some point of pain. Fay held her breath until his hand left her skin. She wanted to reach out and pull his hand back, but she held her arms firm to her side.

"I'm sure," Fay said in a quiet whisper.

"You scared the hell out of everyone you know that right? As soon as you jumped at that thing everyone thought the worst. I thought..." He enveloped her in a hug. She was rigid for a moment holding her breath, but he pulled her closer to his chest and she melted against his body heat. Her head rested perfectly under his chin like two puzzle pieces clipping into place. Fay wrapped her arms around his broad chest and to her shock horror she started to cry. Fay didn't even notice she was crying until Jacob pushed her out to arm's length with a worried look on his face.

"What's wrong?" He asked. Fay lifted a hand to her cheeks and wiped away the wetness.

"I'm just really happy to have you here Jacob," she smiled up at him. She wanted to hug him again, she really wanted to kiss him. But she stepped away, pulling herself from his grasp. "So, what were you raiding my pantry looking for?"

"Oh yeah, I couldn't find the peanut butter," Jacob said looking back at the kitchen and all the open pantry doors he had failed to shut behind himself.

"That's because it's in the fridge," Fay said going to the fridge to grab it out.

"Who the hell keeps peanut butter in the fridge?" Jacob asked.

"It lasts a lot longer, especially since no one looks for it there. If it was just on a shelf Paul would have sniffed it out by now. I swear I was going through a jar every two days before I started putting it in the fridge," Fay said placing the half full jar into the microwave and putting it on for thirty seconds. Jacob gave her an odd look. "What? Lots of people keep peanut butter in the fridge it's not that weird."

"What's between Paul and you?" Jacob asked randomly.

"Nothing," Fay said with a laugh. "He's just a friend, trust me there is definitely nothing going on between Paul and I, no way."

"Are you sure?" Fay laughed louder.

"Yes, I'm very sure. Paul is just... Paul. He's a friend but that's all it will ever be." The microwave beeped and Fay pulled out the jar. She handed it to Jacob. "So, what happened when you caught up to her?" Jacob's face fell.

"We didn't. She escaped over the cliffs. Paul, and Sam are on patrol now. I'm sure she won't come back though." Fay's face fell at Jacobs words. "She would be crazy too."

"A creature who drinks people's blood is crazy Jacob. I'm going to go to bed. Night Jacob," Fay was still exhausted from healing and hated the feeling.

"It will all be okay Fay," Jacob replied.

...

Fay curled up on the floor of her walk-in robe with a pillow and blanket. There was now a large bed in her room, but she still found it hard to sleep in an actual bed most nights. Especially tonight after the events of the day ran through her mind. The small dark room felt more secure even though there was only a thin set of pine doors separating her from the rest of the world. This reminded her of when she was younger and would hide under her bed so her father couldn't see her. If he couldn't see her there was less chance of him getting angry at her. She closed her eyes and curled herself up into a ball. Sleep didn't come easy that night but eventually she drifted off.

Fay only got a few hours' sleep before she heard movement downstairs. Multiple footsteps and voices. She rolled over covering her head with the pillow trying to drown out the noise. It worked for a few minutes until she heard the door to her room open.

"Go away," Fay grumbled. The doors to the robe opened softly. She didn't move and didn't hear the other person move either for a few moments. The person behind her sighed and she heard them take a seat next to her.

"You want to tell me why you're in here?" Paul asked softly.

"It's safe," Fay whispered. Paul put his hand on her shoulder.

"You know how dumb that sounds right? You're a shape shifter, one of the strongest people alive. These doors aren't going to stop anyone from getting to you, but that's okay. You can protect yourself now, and even if you can't you have a whole pack behind you ready to fight. That blood sucker from yesterday is gone it will never hurt you again."

"I'm not just scared of the blood suckers Paul..."

"He's gone too. You're not that little girl any more Fay." Fay peeked out from under her pillow her eyes red rimmed.

"I still see him when I sleep, I still hear his yelling, I still feel him hitting me and I don't heal." Paul had no words to help with that. All he could do was be there.
