Chapter 25

Heaven Is Waiting

January 9th

It was almost dark by the time Fay made it back to Sam and Emily's. She had spent a few hours with Paul and then went home to shower and take a quick nap. She was due to start patrol in another hour and knew somethings needed to be worked out first. She expected to feel guilty for kissing Paul but she didn't. That was until she saw Jacob waiting for her on the steps to Emily and Sam's cabin. Then the guilt hit her like a brick.

"I was about to come looking for you," Jacob said standing up. He looked genuinely worried. Fay felt even worse.

"Well, I'm right here," Fay replied quickly.

"I know you're upset with me and that's not going to get any better by what I have to tell you next. But you have to understand it wasn't my call," Jacob said holding his hands up in front of himself.

"Jacob what's going on?" Fay was confused.

"Patrol has been extended into Forks. There will also be someone standing guard at the Swan residence every night." Jacob said it quickly like ripping off a band-aid. Fay took a second to think about what he had said.

"Why?" She asked sounding calm.

"Bella said the vampire from the other day isn't alone. We can't risk leaving her unguarded." Fay didn't see it as a risk leaving her unguarded. They had already saved Bella once. How many more times would they go out of their way to help her?

"Jacob-" Fay was cut off before she could say anymore.

"It wasn't his call Fay," Sam said appearing in the doorway. "For the next few days, we'll keep an eye on Bella to see if any more cold ones do turn up. Try and put a stop to it before it becomes a problem."

"Fine just keep her away from me." Jacob was surprised just how calm Fay seemed about the idea.

"Okay easy. I've got to get to Bella's but I'll talk to you soon." Jacob left before Fay could say anything else. Sam made no move to get out of the door way so Fay could go inside.

"You took that well," Sam stated, watching his sister.

"As long as she stays away from me, we won't have a problem." Fay shrugged avoiding her brothers' eyes.

"Good," Sam nodded turning to go back inside.

"Wait Sam, I need a favor." Fay said walking closer to the cabin.

"Okay. What is it?" Sam said turning to look at his sister again.

"Paul and I kissed." Fay said in a whispered. "It was a mistake and I need you to put a gag order on both of us so no one else can find out. I know it's unethical but I really need your help Sam." Sam understood then why his sister had taken the news about Bella so well. He could see the guilt in her eyes.

"Fay…" Sam paused. "I order you never to think about or talk about your kiss with Paul to anyone. Pack and non-pack members. I will call Paul soon and tell him as well." Fay felt a shiver run down her spine.

"Thank you, Sam. I promise it won't happen again."

"Don't promise me Fay, promise yourself." Sam knew Jacob and Fay already had enough challenges to overcome with their imprint. "If you are going to make choices that could affect your imprint relationship make sure you can live with those choices. A gag order won't always be a fix."

"I understand Sam." Sam nodded at his sister hoping the message had gotten through.

Fay joined Sam and Emily for dinner before heading out for her patrol shift. Sam told Fay there would be a pack meeting in the morning so to come back there after patrol. Fay was not looking forward to the meeting.

Embry phased out as soon as Fay arrived in the mind link, he was apparently running late for dinner with his mother. I told him I had things under control, but he refused to leave until you got here. Jacob said through the mind link. Fay could see through the mind link that he was watching the backyard of a white weather bored house.

I'm guessing he had nothing to report? Fay thought as she started running the boarder.

His mums making roast pork for dinner but other then that nothing note worthy. Jacob replied.

Good to know. The pair talked for a little while before their minds drifted with different thoughts. Like ships in the night odd thoughts would pass one another.

Charlie must be working late.

I need to cut my hair soon, maybe Emily can do it for me tomorrow.

I wonder how a bullet effects a cold one?

It should start snowing soon.

Their thoughts drifted past one another, Fay avoiding a conflict as she tried her best to tune out any thoughts Jacob had of Bella. She could tell Jacob's thoughts of Bella weren't intentional. He tried to avoid looking into her bedroom window and cut his thoughts short when he did think about her. It was hard sharing your every though with everyone regardless of how much you cared about them. Fay was relieved when Jared phased in at first light. Fay phased out after reporting it was a slow night. Jared would only be doing a couple laps of the boarder before joining them at the meeting.

Fay waited by the Forks boarder for Jacob. The river was small enough there to simply jump across and it was the closest spot to the Swan house. It took Jacob longer than expected to arrive and Fay could smell the sent of Bella on him. She tried her best to ignore it.

"You didn't have to wait for me," Jacob said as he crossed the river.

"I know I just thought we could walk to the meeting together."

"I would but I promised Bella I would pick her up. I just don't want her getting lost on the way to Emily's." Jacob tried to justify his actions and Fay tried to remain calm even though her thoughts started to become angry.

How useless is she? Can she not read a map? She was able to find her way home yesterday okay. Wait did he drive her home yesterday? He didn't tell me that. He doesn't have to tell me everything, but he could at least give me some kind of an idea. Did he think I would freak out? If he was just upfront with everything there would be less chance, I would freak out.

"Fine whatever," Fay shrugged even though her mind was fighting with itself.

What is he hiding? He probably thinks he's doing the right thing not telling me? I should just ask. But then it will seem like I don't trust him. Probably because I don't trust him. We are not dating. He can do whatever he wants. But he did ask me on a date Saturday. He's probably going to cancel that now. Maybe Embry is free I can go with him instead. Or I could spend time with Paul no that's a bad idea. Maybe Kim would want to hang out. Jared would be on patrol anyways, so she is probably free. I'll have to ask her.

"I'll see you soon, okay?" Jacob said reaching out to grab her hand. He squeezed her hand and Fay could feel the imprint pull through the touch. It was like an electric buzz. They had a connection, or at least their bodies did even if they didn't.

Jacob went to step away, but Fay held his hand tighter. She stepped forward and pressed her lips to his. There was no fire between their lips, it was electricity. A slow buzz that made Fay feel weak at the knees. Jacob's hands held her hips and she was grateful he seemed to enjoy the kiss as much as she did.

"What was that for?" Jacob asked as Fay pulled away. He wore one of those goofy grins on his face that made Fay's heart skip around in her chest.

"Just felt like it," she said trying her best to hide a smile. "See you soon." And with that she was gone.

Hopefully that reminds him who he should be spending time with. It definitely reminded me.

January 10th

Emily's cabin was full to bursting with all the elders and the whole pack. Every chair in the house was full. Fay sat on the sofa next to Sam and Emily. Paul sat at the dining table as far away from Fay as he could possibly get which she was grateful for. What Fay wasn't grateful for was the fact Jacob had arrived with Bella and the girl had yet to leave his side. Bella and Jacob sat on the other side of the living room smushed together on a recliner. Fay found it hard to focus on the conversation going around the room as all she wanted to do was get out of the cabin.

"They didn't find anything, but Charlie wants to take another group in another few days." Harry said looking around the room.

"Okay let me know when and we will work patrol around it," Sam nodded and Emily scribbled some notes down in a small book. Sam went on to tell us all the new patrol routine. Fay was on night shift for the foreseeable future but at least he didn't put her on Bella watch. Fay was usually paired with Paul but now it seemed like Jared and Embry were her new patrolling partners. "I think that's everything. Did anyone else have something they wanted to add?" Sam asked looking around the room. Emily gave Fay a sharp nudge to the ribs and Fay signed.

"Yeah, I have something."

"Yes Fay?" Sam asked.

"Yesterday I had a mind link connection while in human form." It was the only way she could explain what happened. Everyone looked at her with wide eyes. Well, everyone except Bella who didn't seem very interested in the conversation now.

"What... when?" Sam and Jacob both asked over one another.

"When Jacob and Paul got in a fight, I saw it even though I was here with the girls. It was only for a few seconds but-"

"It knocked her out completely." Emily added when Fay paused. Fay gave her an annoyed look.

"I think it's from the imprint that's the only thing that seemed to make any sense," Fay shrugged. Shrinking back into the sofa as she tried to avoid the eye contact.

"Why haven't any of the other imprints had this happen before then?" Jared asked, looking between Fay, Sam and the elders.

"Jake and Fay aren't only imprints they are both shifters as well. Their minds are connected already somehow the link has stayed even in human form. It makes sense," Billy nodded looking at the other elders who also nodded their head in agreement. "Keep us updated Fay if-"

A howl ripped through the morning air.

"Well, it looks like Quil is finally joining the party." Embry said as a huge smile spread across his face.

"I'll go find him," Sam said standing up and leaving the cabin. He was gone less than a minute before another howl broke the silence. The rest of the pack rushed from the house, phasing as quickly as they could.

Cold one, heading north. It's that red head back again. Sam said as soon as everyone had shifted.

I thought we scared her off last time. Jared thought back.

Maybe she came back looking for her friend. Embry suggested.

Bella was right. Jacob thought.

Bloody vampire magnet. Paul thought and Fay couldn't help but agree.

January 12th

Poor Quil had been thrown straight into the deep end. After only a few hours of shifting practice he was put onto patrols. He seems to be taking it all in his stride though. He had phased at the worst possible time, and everyone was so focused on trying to catch the red head he was left to fend for himself. She had gotten away from the pack but now everyone was on high alert.

"What happens if the red head isn't caught by Monday?" Quil asked as he ate one of the sandwiches Fay had just finished making. Quil had moved into Fay's house for the time being until he was in control enough to go home. Since there was someone else here now Fay no longer slept at Emily's. Which was for the best as Bella now spent most of her free time there.

"Why what's Monday?" Fay asked putting the butter back in the fridge.

"School," Quil said with an exhausted sigh.

"Oh, yeah. Hope we catch her before Monday I guess," Fay shrugged grabbing her own sandwich.

"Are they always this fast?" Quil asked.

"The last one's haven't been. She has to slip up sooner or later and when she does, we will be there."

Once they were finished eating Quil and Fay headed out for patrol. Quil was on Bella watching duties while Fay was to run the boarder with Jared. With any luck this would be over soon.
