Chapter 27
Heaven Is Waiting
January 18th
Howls ripped Fay from her dreams. Her body was moving before her mind was fully awake. She ran from the house as quickly as she could, jumping down the stairs and running out the closest open door. Sam was running from the tree line towards her.
"What's going on?" Fay asked, as she skidded to a halt in front of him.
"There was an issue with the hunting trip. The red head was there. Harry had a heart attack. He didn't make it." Sam's voice was rough, like he was barely holding it together.
"Oh god," Fay felt her blood run cold. She could feel her brothers pain, the packs pain as well. She was sure her own pain over the situation would come with time, once there was time to feel it.
"Leah phased when Sue told her the news." Sam let out with a shaky breath.
"Is Sue, okay?" Fay asked knowing what could happen to a human if a shifter phased too close.
"Yeah, Emily is with her, she's a mess but luckily Leah wasn't in reaching distance of her," Sam said running a hand over his face.
"What can I do?" Fay asked. She was shaking on her feet as other's emotions ran through her.
"We can't get Leah to calm down, my thoughts weren't helping. I was hoping you could try and calm her down, hopefully another female voice helps."
"Yeah, of course. I can do that, I can do that."
"Jacob and Quil are patrolling the coastline. Embry and Paul are covering the other boarder lines. Jared is with Seth, he's about to phase. I'm on my way to check back in with Sue."
"Okay I'll get Leah," Fay nodded moving for the closest trees.
"Fay," Sam said stopping her. Fay looked back at him confused. "I love you sister." His eyes swelled with emotions that he tried to hold back. Harry was like a father to him, a real father. Not a monster like they shared.
"Love you too Sam," Fay nodded her head giving her brother one last look before darting into the tree line. She phased once in the trees and a mess of different conversations hit her at once. It was like running into a crowded room where everyone was trying to talk over someone else.
Finally, where the hell were you, she won't shut up, Paul said, sensitive as ever.
Quite Paul.
Fay tuned out the others as much as she could. Seth had just phased and that wasn't helping the mess of confusion as Jared tried to get his attention and explain what was going on. It took Fay a few minutes to find Leah as different scents ran in every direction.
Fay froze as a skittish Grey wolf came into sight. The grey wolf spotted Fay at the same time letting out a warning growl.
Leah?
Where are you? Leah's eyes flicked all round Fay as though she was expecting someone else to jump out.
Right in front of you. I'm a shifter as well. I'm not here to hurt you, none of us are.
The voices? The voices are coming from the wolf? It's talking? Leah's mind was muddled and Fay tried to make sense of it.
We can hear each other's thoughts. It takes a bit to get use to it. The guys can be pigs, it's hard to block them out sometimes. Takes a lot of practice to tune them out but I'll help you. We will work together.
Your a wolf? I'm talking to a wolf? This isn't real.
Leah I can help you get back to human form, but you need to calm down. You can't phase back while your mind is such a mess. I know it's been a big day but you need to try and empty your mind. Fay sat down closing her eyes. She hoped Leah might follow her lead.
Clear mind. Clear mind. I can do that.
After a minute Fay opened her eyes glad to see Leah had followed her lead and was laying on the ground with her eyes closed. She could hear the guys minds and knew Leah could hear it as well. They would surely be louder in Leah's head as she didn't know how to quieten the voices. Even when Fay put all her focus on quieting the voices in her own head she could still hear them clearly.
Imagine you're self human. Count your fingers. Your toes. Think about them in detail. Think about yourself shrinking back into your skin. Focus on your breathing. You can do it. Fay stood as she saw Leah's body start to shake and shift. Fay phased back to human at the same time Leah did.
"You did it Leah. You're back to being human… you can open your eyes now," Fay said when Leah made no move from the spot she sat curled up on the ground. "Come on Leah, you can do it." Leah lifted her head opening her eyes and the first thing she saw were her hands. A large sigh left her lungs at the sight of her human hands. It was quickly sucked back in with a gasp.
"Fuck! I'm naked!" Leah screeched wrapping her arms around herself as best as she could. Fay pulled the strapped fabric from her ankle and tossed it to the other girl.
"Believe it or not, you kind of get use to it. I don't carry spares but you can use mine. I heard Embry was going to get clothes he should be here soon." Fay explained. Trying to keep Leah calm. Leah hurried to put the shirt on. Fay walked around behind one of the trees so Leah didn't have to stare at her naked while they waited. "Just breathe for a minute Leah. If you get too stressed you'll phase again."
"Again? This could happen again," Fay mentally slapped herself as she heard Leah's breathing quicken.
"You are okay Leah. Just slow your breathing. We are going to talk through it all with you." Fay kept her own voice slow and soft. She could hear footsteps approaching after a few minutes of silence passed.
"I'm going to leave these here, okay?" Embry called out from somewhere to Fay's right.
"Thanks Embry," Fay called back. She could tell he was still a good distance away from them. Even with his good eyesight there was no way he could see her through the thick grouping of trees.
"I'm taking clothes to Seth. Then Jared will bring him to your place." Embry explained.
"Seth? Is he okay?" Leah asked looking around still trying to work out where Embry was.
"He's fine. Should be back to human in no time. Kids taking it well." Fay moved in the direction of Embry. She could hear he was already walking away from them.
"It's okay Leah, you will see him soon." Fay snatched a black shirt off the ground were Embry had left it. She slipped it on tugging the hem down as far as it would go. It was shorter then the ones she usually used. Paul's smell radiated off of it. She rolled her eyes slipping on a pair of bike shorts Embry left behind and picking up the other pair of matching bike shorts.
"How did you find that?" Leah asked as she came up behind Fay. Fay passed Leah the other pair of bike shorts.
"I could hear what direction Embry came from, could smell him as well. You will get use to using your wolf senses in human form. They're not as strong but they are there."
"What do you mean they are there?"
"Did you want something to eat? We can discuss things over food? You must be hungry after today," Fay said trying to get Leah back to her house before she explained more things to her. She would likely not take it well when hearing this was definitely not a one time thing.
"Now you mention it, yeah. I'm starving," Leah said holding her stomach. Her hands clung to the shirt tightly. Fay tried not to stare at her. It had been a long time since they had last seen each other. Leah was disheveled after today's events but she still looked as beautiful as ever. Fay had envied the older girls looks and confidence when they were younger. But neither one of those things would help her out of this situation now.
"Come on, my place isn't to far from here." Fay started walking not looking back to see if Leah would follow. After a few steps she herd the other girls steps following after her.
"Your some kind of wolf as well right? You were that black one?" Leah asked trying to peace things together.
"Yes. That was me." Fay agreed. She heard Leah's foot steps stop. Fay turned around to see why Leah had stopped.
"The legends are real. Aren't they?" Leah asked looking up at Fay with wet eyes.
"Yes Leah they are. We are shifters. Today wasn't a one time thing, you're going to shift again wether you want to or not. But there is a whole pack of us, people you know. We are going to help you. I promise it's going to be okay." Fay tried to ensure her.
"How is this possible?" Leah asked.
"Cold Ones… they are real as well. The pack is here to protect the tribe. I know it sounds crazy. I'm not sure how exactly it all happens but I'll tell you everything I know. Come on we're almost there." Fay kept moving and was glad when Leah fell back into step behind her. They were only a hundred meters from her house now and it appeared in no time.
"What is this place?" Leah asked as she exited the tree line.
"My house. A few of the pack live here at the moment as well." Fay said mentally working out what rooms she would put Leah and Seth into.
"Our mother will be looking for us," Leah worried aloud.
"Someone will let her know that you and Seth are okay." Fay ensured.
"So, what happens now?" Leah asked as they walked up the stairs and into the house.
"You will stay here for a while, Seth as well. Until you have your wolf under control. Paul and Quil are also here at the moment but there's plenty of room. We can go by your house and get some of your things. Or I have clothes you can use." Fay offered, going to the kitchen.
"Thank you, Fay. I guess this explains some things though, why Sam went missing and Emily… Was this the reason you went missing as well?" Fay turned back to Leah, a little surprised.
"You remember me?"
"Of course," Leah replied.
"Uh. No, I ran away. It was only after the boys found me end of last year that I phased." Fay shrugged before digging into the fridge.
"Phased?" Leah asked.
"Turned into a wolf."
"Oh." She ponders over the idea. Fay put a dozen mince patty's on a tray in the oven. It would be faster then trying to cook them all in a pan. She pulled out sauces, and butter.. Her ears pricked up and she paused for a moment.
"Someone's here." Fay said a few moments before someone from the pack entered the house. She didn't know the scent.
"Leah?" Seth's voice called from down the hall way.
Leah jumped to her feet at the sound of her brothers voice. Seth tackled his sister into a hug. She hugged him back quickly. They both watery eyes and emotions radiated off of them. They had lost their father today and their lives were turned upside down. Fay looked away, trying to let the siblings have a moment. Her ears pricked up when Leah said her name.
"Of course," Seth said covering the short distance between himself and Fay. He pulled her into a tight hug catching her off guard. "I'm glad you're alive." He blurted out making Leah roll her eyes. She had tears in them but there was a slim smile on her lips as she watched her younger brother.
"Seth let her go," Leah demanded. Seth released Fay taking a step back from Fay.
"Don't worry not the first time I've heard that."
Fay prepared dinner for them all. She was getting low on supplies and would need to ask Emily to get her some more groceries very soon.
Leah ate quietly while Seth talked almost nonstop asking every question he could think of. Fay answered them as best a she could. After dinner she found clean clothes for them and also showed them how to carry spare clothes with them at all times. Not long after Fay had gotten Leah and Seth settled into their new rooms Jared arrived.
"Hey, Jared, do you mind staying here tonight. I want to go see how Jacob is I'm not sure how long I'll be."
"No one told you?" Jared asked
"Told me what? No one has been here." Fay said stopping what she was doing to give Jared her full attention.
"Bella jumped off one of the high cliffs. Jacob was there to get her out in time. He took her back to Forks I don't think he would be back yet." There was a cracking sound as the plate Fay had been holding smashed in her grip.
"That's it. I'm done." She let the plate fragments fall to the kitchen floor as she marched from the house.
"Fay?" Jared called out after her.
"Stay, here," Fay growled as her wolf ripped free from her skin.
January 19th
Fay paced back and fourth across Jacob's garage. She had been there for over an hour by that point. Billy wasn't home but she was glad about that, she didn't need an audience. Jacob's car was still in the garage so he must have taken Bella home in her truck. Fay seethed at the thought of Bella. Every time a new thought came to mind, she somehow felt even angrier. This was it, she was not leaving until the imprint was broken. She didn't even know if it was possible but clearly this was never going to work out. It had only been 18 days since they imprinted and things were not working.
It was raining heavily but Fay still sensed it when he got close. Before she could hear him or smell him, she felt the pull of the imprint. It was weaker than it had first been. Compared to the other imprinted couples their connection was next to nothing. Fay wasn't even sure if Jacob still felt it or not. She starred at the doorway watching his dark figure emerge from the night.
Jacob looked a mess. Soaking wet Fay could still make out the tears in his eyes. Fay was caught off guard. The words of anger she had built up inside her thoughts sunk back down to her stomach. They stared at one another for a long moment
Jacob broke the silence first.
"The Cullen's came back. Bella left with one of them. She's going to save the bloodsucker from killing himself. I saved her and she still chooses them." He shook as tears slipped down his cheeks.
Fays anger faded away and she walked forward wrapping her arms around him. He fell into her; his body shook with every emotion. He clung to her for dear life.
"Thank you for being here Fay." Jacob Whispered into her ear. She wanted to say so many things to him at that moment. But she couldn't say them.
"Always," she whispered. She didn't know if it was true but she hoped it would be.
The feeling of loss, anger and pain flooded through the pack's veins. Today they had all been through a lot. A tribe member died, not one but two new wolves shifted. There was an attempted suicide, the Cullen's returned and took Bella with them. The threat of the red head still loomed even with the Swan girl gone. But the pack would find a way. They were stronger now, regardless of the issues they had amongst them.
