"I just really don't want there to be a return of 'puny Parker'." Thought Peter as he recalled how fun getting bullied was.
He was currently in an airship taking him to Beacon. Why he couldn't just stay in his room until the other students got here, he didn't know, but Ozpin insisted that he get to know his fellow huntsmen in training.
"Not like I was ever the best at making friends though, look how well me and Flash got along" Remembered Peter as he thought back to his former friend turned bully. "I really do not want to have to deal with something like that again. Ozpin did say to have no reservations about defending myself, should I need to, since it's a warrior school and all. Still hope it won't come to that."
He was dressed in his usual long-sleeved white sweater, covered by a blue tee. Along with that, he was wearing a pair of brown cargo pants. The only thing he wore different was a belt holding cartridges of dust and webbing, the latter for in case he needed to change into Spider-Man at a moment's notice. He also had on what one would believe to only be armored forearm guards that protected the tops of his hands all the way to his elbows, with a disk-looking device under each wrist. "Too bad I can't hide my web-shooters in these."
Breaking him out of his thoughts was a news report detailing his recent fight with Torchwick.
"Witnesses report local vigilante Spider-Man at the scene attempting to apprehend nefarious criminal Roman Torchwick. Unfortunately, even he was unable to stop him and escaped. Authorities still state Spider-Man is wanted for questioning." The news feed then cuts to a reporter conducting an interview with a policeman.
"I'm not one to condone vigilantism, but I will say this kid's done a lot to cut down on crime around here. We still have questions for him to answer, so anyone with information on Spider-Man's whereabouts is asked to inform-"
Peter remembered from his encounters with the police that while they were appreciative of the help, they still weren't comfortable letting some unknown masked guy run around chasing criminals, so he was thankful Glynda was able to get him out of sight after the fight with Roman and his Fire-Lady lackey.
Unbeknownst to Peter, Ruby and her sister Yang were standing on the other side of the airship watching the same story. As it's playing, Yang leans down and asks Ruby, "So all in the same night, you make a new friend, meet your hero, and get an invite to Beacon? Still think you want 'normal knees?'" She teases.
Ruby just huffs then says, "He really was amazing though… The videos and pictures honestly don't do him justice! When you're that close to him, you can really see what he can do! I don't know what his semblance is, but whatever it is, it allows him to move like crazy!"
"I think it's probably got something to do with spiders Rubes" her sister replies. "Also you're forgetting the most important part!~"
"What's that?" Ruby asks.
"He thinks you're cute.~"
Ruby instantly turns bright red. "Yang! Not here!" she whispers.
As they're arguing, VNN continues with their news story. "Thank you, Cyril. In other news, this Saturday's Faunus Civil Rights protest turned dark when members of the White Fang disrupted the ceremony. The once peaceful organization has now disrupted…"
Interrupting the story is an incoming hologram message from beacon. "Hello, and welcome to Beacon! My name is Glynda Goodwitch."
"Hello again." Peter thinks.
The hologram continues, "You are among a privileged few who have received the honor of being selected to attend this prestigious academy! Our world is experiencing an incredible time of peace, and as future Huntsmen and Huntresses, it is your duty to uphold it. You have demonstrated the courage needed for such a task, and now it is our turn to provide you with the knowledge and the training to protect our world."
The message then ends as the airship starts descending towards the academy with students clamoring to try and take a look out the windows.
"Never gets old." Peter thinks with a smile, not being able to help but feel excited. Especially at the thought of meeting a certain girl on campus again.
"Be lying if I said I wasn't hoping to see her again. But honestly what are the odds? Not to mention that I think a girl as good looking as her is way out of my league. Still can't blame a guy for hoping. Or at least trying." A memory of trying to ask out Sally Avril immediately flashes through Peter's mind. "Well, maybe."
A vomiting blonde teen then breaks Peter from his thoughts. "First day nerves. Happens to the best of us"
"All I'm saying is that motion sickness is a much more common problem than people let on!"
"Hey I believe you man, I've been there before! It ain't something to take lightly."
Deciding to befriend the boy who threw up, Peter stayed behind with him and introduced himself when he finished hugging the trash can. He learned his name was Jaune.
"You seem fine now." Jaune comments.
"Well, yeah. Been. Past tense. I don't get like that anymore."
"Thanks to the spider bite" Peter thought.
After Peter's reply, the duo then see a small explosion not too far away in front of them.
"Wanna… check it out?" Asks Jaune.
"It's right in front of us, I think we'd see it even if we didn't want to." Peter replied.
Upon going to investigate, the boys see a girl surrounded by blast marks and another girl, angry and soot covered, dressed in white.
"I know that was a bit dangerous, but ya gotta say, that blast was pretty cool."
Once the smoke clears, Peter is able to see Ruby in the center. "Maybe the Parker luck is finally beginning to turn!" Peter hopefully thinks, meeting Ruby again.
"Oh, and I suppose you believe nearly being blown off the side of a cliff is amusing?!" The girl in white yells.
"Or not."
"Oh come on! Even saying, 'a bit dangerous' is an exaggeration! Unless you're something like an eyebrow hair, I don't think you'd be harmed!" Peter then sees how much the soot had covered her. "Just… a little dirtied up."
"I'm really, really sorry!" Ruby meekly states.
"Ugh, you complete dolt! What are you even doing here? Aren't you a little young to be attending Beacon? This isn't your ordinary combat school. It's not just sparring and practice, you know! We're here to fight monsters, so... watch where you're going!"
"Ay, calm down princess! The girl said she was sorry!" Peter defends.
"It's heiress actually."
All eyes turn to a new girl dressed in black, holding a bottle that rolled away from the explosion.
"Weiss Schnee, heiress to the Schnee Dust Company, one of the largest producers of energy propellant in the world."
"Oh great, another spoiled rich kid who thinks everyone's beneath them." Thought Peter, thinking back to some of the bullies he dealt with back at Midtown High.
"Finally! Some recognition!" Weiss proudly proclaims.
"The same company infamous for its controversial labor forces and questionable business partners." The girl in black informs.
"Oof." Peter says out loud as Ruby giggles at the whole situation.
"Wha- How dare…The nerve of…Ugh!" Weiss says as she angrily takes back the bottle while some butlers pick up her luggage and follow behind her.
"Dang I think she got more stuff in those things than I've ever owned in my whole life!" Peter jokes.
As Peter tries to lighten the mood, Ruby yells after Weiss, "I promise I'll make this up to you!"
She then turns to where the girl in black was. "I guess I'm not the only one having a rough first day, So, what's-" Ruby then sees that the girl has since left. "Welcome to Beacon…" she sadly says. She then perks up at remembering that the person she had a long conversation with the day she met Spider-Man was there.
"Peter?! Why didn't you tell me you were going to Beacon?!"
"It's just that we got to talking about weapons, and the subject of where I was gonna be going to school never came up!"
"But your 'project' was clearly for Beacon!"
"It really didn't cross my mind!" Peter retorted.
Ruby just gives him a deadpanned look.
"Honest!"
"Can you at least let me see it?" She asks.
Peter replies, "Well it's more like, 'them'.
Ruby isn't sure what he means at first until he triggers something on what she thought were his armored forearm guards. The forearm guards expand, revealing them to be a pair of triangular shields with retractable double edged blades coming out of the front. If that wasn't enough, below the blades, where his hands were, in the palms, was some kind of device that Ruby correctly guessed was where dust would be shot out of. The color scheme was mainly black, but with a dark blue trim. Ruby had stars in her eyes as she admired Peter's weapons.
"WOOOAHHH! I've never seen a weapon like that before! What'd you name it?"
"I call it Onyx Avenger." Peter replied.
"How'd you even come up with a design like that?!"
Peter based the designs off of when he saw Captain America's new Wakandan shields, when he wasn't Captain America for a while, but going through his 'nomad' phase. He also combined Iron Man's repulsors into his weapon, except it shot out dust instead.
Peter simply replied, "I put together different aspects of some really cool weapons I saw, and came up with this. I think though that this right here is what I'm most proud of!" Peter points to the dust repulsor.
Ruby looks at it intently as she inspects it and asks, "Was this that dust propellent thing you were telling me about?!"
Peter remembers he mentioned to the girl that he was looking for something to give his weapon better range as he says, "Yeah! Turned out to be a real success. Oh yeah, I never actually did see your weapon, I've only heard you talk about it! Let's see it!" He says excitedly.
More than happy to show off her work, Ruby brings out Crescent Rose in front of the boys.
Peter already saw the scythe as Spider-Man, but still did his best to look surprised. It wasn't that hard, since it was still an impressive weapon.
Jaune, coming out of his shock from seeing such pieces of machinery asks, "Wait, wait, wait… You both made those things?!"
"Yeah" Ruby informs him. "All the students at Signal academy forge their own weapons! That reminds me Peter, you also never said which academy you went to before coming here."
"That's, uh, because… I never actually did go to one. I'm kinda self-taught."
The two stare at the teen with shock that he managed not only to create such an original weapon, but had learned enough combat skill to be accepted to Beacon, all by himself.
"I did have some help here and there though!" This wasn't entirely a lie, as he really did learn how to fight from his time as Spider-Man, receiving a few pointers from other heroes, and from Ozpin and Glynda when he was making Onyx Avenger.
"But enough about me, what about you Jaune?" eager to take the attention off himself.
"Oh, I got this Sword!" Jaune says as he unsheaths his blade. "Yeah, and I've got a shield, too! It shrinks like Peter's, so when I get tired of carrying it, I can just... put it away…"
"But... wouldn't it weigh the same?" Asks Ruby.
"Yeah… It does…"
Ruby giggles a bit at this and says, "Well, I guess me and Peter are kind of dorks when it comes to weapons, sooo... I guess I did go a little overboard when designing it. At least Peter kept his a bit more simple."
"Simple? It took nearly two weeks of research and experimenting just to get the dust repulsors to function like I wanted!" Peter protested. "There was nothing simple about that!"
Ruby just laughs some more, then asks Jaune, "So how'd you make your weapon?"
"It's actually a hand-me-down. My great-great-grandfather used it to fight in the war." Jaune replies.
"Sounds more like a family heirloom to me! Well, I like it! Not many people have an appreciation for the classics these days." Ruby reassures him.
"Yeah, the classics…"
Turning then to Peter she asks, "So why'd you help me out back there? In the courtyard?"
"We're friends aren't we?" Peter states. Not wanting to sound like a creep, and trying to hide his own attraction to her, he quickly says, "I mean, it just, uh, didn't feel right leaving you alone! I… I know what that's like."
Seeing his new friend get put into an uncomfortable situation, Jaune tries to help and adds,
"Yeah, it's like my mom always says, 'Strangers are just friends you haven't met yet.'"
Looking appreciative with a slight tinge of pink on her face, she just goes, "Hmm. Hey where are we going?"
"Oh, I don't know! I was following you guys. Y-You think there might be a directory? Maybe a food court? Some sort of recognizable landmark? Is, uh... Is that a 'no'?"
Ruby laughing again says, "I don't think so."
Peter on the other hand had lived here for two months and got to know the place well, but he couldn't blow his cover and act like he knew exactly where they needed to go. Still not wanting to leave his friends figuring it out on their own he makes up a story on the spot.
"You know I actually memorized a map of the place if you guys are lost."
"Why didn't you say that sooner?!" Ruby and Jaune shout.
"We had some time to kill, I thought you all wanted to sight-see!" Peter defends. "Come on, we're supposed to go this way."
Ruby smiles as she follows the two boys as Peter thinks, "You know I guess the Parker luck really is starting to change. I did get to meet Ruby again after all." Smiling at this thought he immediately regrets it afterwards. "Oh no! I just jinxed it! Can't catch a break, can I?!"
Once the trio finally reach the auditorium, Yang yells over to Ruby that she saved her a spot where she was standing, then tells Jaune and Peter, "Oh! Hey, I-I gotta go! I'll see you after the ceremony!"
"Hey, wait! Ah, great. Where are we supposed to find another nice, quirky girl to talk to?!"
"Well I might not be a girl, but I'm plenty quirky! Though my niceness might be lacking in some areas, not gonna lie." Peter quips.
The two just decide to stand around and wait for the announcement they were there for.
Back with Ruby, Yang asks, "How's your first day going, little sister?"
Ruby gives her a look and says, "You mean since you ditched me and I exploded?"
"Yikes! Meltdown already?"
"No, I literally exploded a hole in front of the school! And there was some fire, and I think some ice...?"
Yang then gives a smile and aks, "Are you being sarcastic?"
Ruby scoffs, unaware that Weiss is behind her, "I wish! I tripped over some crabby girl's luggage, and then she yelled at me, and then I sneezed, and then I exploded, and then she yelled at me again, and I felt really, really bad, and I just wanted her to stop yelling at me!"
"You!"
Ruby then jumps into Yang's arms. "Oh, God, it's happening again!"
"You're lucky we weren't blown off the side of the cliff!"
Yang stands there surprised that Ruby really was speaking literally. "Oh my God, you really exploded."
"It was an accident. It was an accident!"
Weiss then shoves a booklet reading 'Dust for Dummies' in her face. "What's this?"
Weiss than quickly states at a barely audible rate, "The Schnee Dust Company is not responsible for any injuries or damages sustained while operating a Schnee Dust Company product. Although not mandatory, the Schnee Family highly encourages their customers to read and familiarize themselves with this easy to follow guide to Dust applications and practices in the field."
Ruby then stands there going, "Uuhhh...?", not entirely comprehending what she said.
"You really wanna start making things up to me?"
"Absolutely." Ruby replies.
"Read this, and don't ever speak to me again."
Yang, wanting to defend her sister, reasons, "Look, uh, it sounds like you two just got off on the wrong foot. Why don't you start over and try to be friends, okay?"
Ruby perks up and goes, "Yeah! Great idea, sis!" She then clears her throat and holds out her hand to be friendly. "Hello, Weiss! I'm Ruby! Wanna hang out? We can go shopping for school supplies!"
Weiss then sarcastically responds, "Yeah! And we can paint our nails and try on clothes and talk about cute boys, like tall, blond, and scraggly over there! Or the interjecting unfunny comedian with him!" Pointing to the teens behind her.
"Wow, really?!"
"No." Weiss glares.
Peter overhears, and trying again to lighten the situation says, "Well still I appreciate your criticism! Though interjecting's kinda a big part with my material, so if you don't like that, you probably won't like my humor at all. Oh well, comedy's subjective!"
Weiss, annoyed by him again, is about to say something is interrupted by the headmaster getting everyone's attention to give a speech.
"I'll keep this brief. You have traveled here today in search of knowledge, to hone your craft and acquire new skills, and when you have finished, you plan to dedicate your life to the protection of the people. But I look amongst you, and all I see is wasted energy, in need of purpose, direction. You assume knowledge will free you of this, but your time at this school will prove that knowledge can only carry you so far. It is up to you to take the first step."
Glynda then informs the students, "You will gather in the ballroom tonight; tomorrow, your initiation begins. Be ready. You are dismissed."
Yang comments, "He seemed kind of... off." Ruby adds, "It's almost like he wasn't even there."
"Dang, what's wrong Ozzy?" Peter thinks.
Jaune then leaves Peter's side and dashes over to Weiss. "I'm a natural blond, you know!"
"Lost cause dude!"
A few hours later, at night, everyone is in their sleeping bags and pajamas with Ruby laying in her's, writing a letter. Yang then plops down next to her and exclaims, "It's like a big slumber party!"
Ruby, still writing replies, "I don't think Dad would approve of all the boys, though."
"I know I do!" Yang purrs as she watches some of the other students showing off their muscles. Jaune, dressed in footie pajamas, sees her and waves, causing her to groan. Seeing her sister writing something she asks, "What's that?"
"A letter to the gang back at Signal." Ruby explains. "I promised to tell them all about Beacon and how things are going."
"Aw, that's so cuuuute!" Ruby then throws a pillow at her sister in response.
"Shut up! I didn't get to take my friends with me to school! It's weird barely knowing anyone here!"
"What about Jaune? He's... nice!" Yang continues. "There you go! Plus one friend! That's a hundred percent increase! And that photographer guy you met at the dust shop the other night! Two hundred percent!"
Ruby reminds Yang, "Pretty sure Weiss counts as a negative friend. Back to one."
Yang still tries to cheer up her sister, "There's no such thing as negative friends! You just made two friends and one enemy!" Ruby then throws another pillow at Yang.
"Look, it's only been one day. Trust me; you've got friends all around you! You just haven't met them yet! And gotta say, you don't have such a bad taste in friends!~"
She then points over to Peter, who was sitting next to Jaune, dressed in sweats and a tank top, which showed off his extremely toned arms. They also had a few scars here and there.
"Can see why you're so interested in him.~" She teases, thinking that the scars made him even more attractive.
Ruby on the other hand didn't answer, but was turning bright red as she stared at Peter. Suddenly realizing she was staring, she turns to Yang about to angrily say something, until she notices a candle lit and sees the girl in black from behind her sister. "That girl…"
Yang looks over to where Ruby was talking about and asks, "You know her?"
"Not really. She saw what happened this morning, but left before I could say anything."
Yang then grabs her sister by the arm. "Well, now's your chance!"
"Wait! What are you doing?!" Ruby cries as she fails to escape from her sister's grasp.
They walk over to the girl, with Ruby being dragged behind, who was deep into reading a book until the sisters take her attention away from it.
All the noise the two were making catches the attention of Peter who was starting to try and go to sleep. "That must be Ruby's sister. What's she doing to Ruby now? Couldn't she wait until the morning?"
Figuring he wouldn't be getting any sleep, thanks to his enhanced hearing, Peter just decides to lay down and make the best of unwillingly eavesdropping on their conversation.
"Hel-looooo! I believe you two may know each other?"
The girl only stares at Ruby annoyingly when she asks, "Aren't you... that girl that exploded?"
"Uh, yeah! My name's Ruby! But you can just call me Crater…" She says but then realizing how awkward that sounded she says, "Actually, you can just call me Ruby."
"Okay…" she says, really wanting to get back to her book.
Yang whispers, "What are you doing?"
Ruby whispers back, "I don't know - help me!" Yang tries to continue the conversation and asks, "So... What's your name?"
The girl sighs as realizes the sisters aren't gonna let her continue reading in peace. "Blake."
"Well, Blake, I'm Yang, Ruby's older sister! I like your bow!"
"Thanks!" Blake says, still annoyed.
"It goes great with your... pajamas!" Yang still continues.
"Right…"
"Nice night, don't you think?"
"Yes - it's lovely! Almost as lovely as this book! … That I will continue to read."
"As soon as you leave!"
Giving up, Yang looks over to Ruby. "Yeah, this girl's a lost cause." Curious about the book, Ruby asks, "What's it about?"
Blake, surprised at this goes, "Huh?"
"Your book. Does it have a name?"
Blake answers, "Well... I-it's about a man with two souls, each fighting for control over his body."
"Oh, yeah... That's real lovely!" Yang says sarcastically.
"I love books." Ruby continues. "Yang used to read to me every night before bed. Stories of heroes and monsters... They're one of the reasons I want to be a Huntress!"
"And why is that? Hoping you'll live happily ever after?" Blake says, thinking it's a bit of a naive way of thinking.
"Well, I'm hoping we all will. As a girl, I wanted to be just like those heroes in the books... Someone who fought for what was right, and protected people who couldn't protect themselves!"
"That's... very ambitious for a child." Blake states., then frowns. "Unfortunately, the real world isn't the same as a fairy tale."
"Well, that's why we're here! To make it better." Ruby says.
"Oh, I am so proud of my baby sister!" Yang says endearingly as she hugs Ruby, lifting her into the air.
Ruby, embarrassed, yells, "Cut it out!" as they end up scuffling with each other, creating even more noise.
"Well, at least she made another friend." Peter thought despite the oncoming headache he was dealing with.
Blake, now wanting to go to sleep tells them, "Well, Ruby, Yang, it's a pleasure to ha-"
Wiess storms onto the scene, interrupting Blake and shouts, "What in the world is going on over here?! Don't you realize some of us are trying to sleep?"
When Yang and Wiess see each other, each one shouts, "Oh, not you again!"
Not wanting to create any more of a ruckus, Ruby goes, "Shh! Guys, she's right! People are trying to sleep!"
"Oh, now you're on my side!"
"I was always on your side!" Ruby retorts.
Having enough of Weiss acting crabby Yang yells back, "Yeah, what's your problem with my sister? She's only trying to be nice!"
"She's a hazard to my health!" Weiss claims.
Being fed up with all the commotion, Peter finally yells over, "Eh, princess! Can you please take it down a notch? I've been trying to sleep for the past half hour, and your screeching ain't helping."
Weiss was about to give him a verbal beatdown until they all see a piece of paper, thrown by some bully kid behind Peter. It would've hit a sleeping Jaune until Peter's hand shoots in the air and grabs it before it can hit him.
The girls look over to Peter who was still laying down, so there was no way he could have seen it. He didn't even seem to realize what he just did right away, so Peter just awkwardly says, "Uhhh… Huntsmen reflexes, ya know? Gotta be ready to go up and at 'em before any baddie can get to you, heh, heh…"
Blake then immediately blows out her candle, effectively darkening the room, leaving everyone to their thoughts.
"Way to go Parker! You're supposed to keep a low profile on the spider-powers, now people might get suspicious!"
